Jazz A Saint-Germain
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Jazz à Saint Germain is a compilation of compelling jazz standards performed in tribute to the Parisian speakeasies that flourished during the German occupation in World War II. Espousing a free-spirited highlife as well as an existential and intellectual aesthetic, the French underground heartily embraced American jazz. Showcasing traditional styles as well as ambitious adaptations that reveal reggae, African, and even hip-hop influences, this collection is tasteful and eclectic. Angélique Kidjo's version of "Summertime" is gently evocative, as is Dee Dee Bridgewater's moving rendition of "Watermelon Man." The Jazz Passengers and Debbie Harry interpret "There Is No More Tomorrow," and French chanteuse François Hardy is joined by Iggy Pop for a version of "I'll Be Seeing You." With artists old and new, Jazz à Saint Germain is a vibrant, engaging affair. --Mitch Myers

Amazon.com's Best of 2000
Smooth, downtempo grace flows through the veins of St. Germain, a.k.a. noted French composer-producer Ludovic Navarre. His record is a sensual flow of jazzy textures, Latin rhythms, and bass-ridden beats, hovering on the verge of techno, jazz, or experimental headphone music without tipping its hand too far in any direction. The result is irresistible: class with an edge. --Matthew Cooke
Amazon.com
Techno and house music producer Ludovic Navarre is--along with Laurent Garnier, Air and DJ Cam--one of the biggest names in French electronic music of the past decade. His ability to imaginatively blend jazz elements with recent dance-music styles has been demonstrated before, but the seamless quality of this release is stunning. Compared to someone such as Amon Tobin, who obviously (although brilliantly) creates sampled collages, St Germain makes it pleasantly difficult to identify the boundary lines between "live" performance, programmed electronics, and sampled sound. Part of the credit must go to this album's musicians, including Pascal Ohsé, Eduoard Labor, Alexandre Destrez, and Idresse Diop (at least some of whom are francophone Africans making their mark in the post-colonialist European Afro-jazz scene). The CD's opening piece, "Rose Rouge," is centered on an edgy piano rhythm and a looped vocal fragment from jazz singer Marlena Shaw. The dub-inflected "Montego Bay Spleen" features Jamaican jazz guitarist Ernest Ranglin, who offers a clean, warm, neo-Wes Montgomery style filtered through his years as a session musician-architect of ska and reggae. And Edouard Labor's raspy flute tone on "So Flute," its role as much rhythmic as melodic, adds a Latin flavor to the mix. "Sure Thing," another high point of the release, is built around a vocal and guitar sample from blues guitarist John Lee Hooker, borrowed from the soundtrack to Dennis Hopper's film The Hot Spot and noteworthy on its own as probably the only time Hooker, Miles Davis, and Taj Mahal ever played together. Navarre's skill in selecting musicians, finding sample sources, and assembling cool, streamlined grooves adds up to quite an accomplishment. --Bob Bannister

Thanks to Amazon, I was able to buy a CD I had been hunting for several years, and at a great price including postage to Australia !
The tital track Rose Rouge is an edgy Jazz/Rock ensemble without peer, and is definitely a 10 out of 10. The other numbers I rate between 7 and 9 and the CD has not left my car CD player in nearly 2 weeks I love it that much !

international hit.......2007-07-04
every youth hostel all over the world has this CD. it is a great chill out album. enjoyed it for years.
Rose Rouge..........2007-06-27
is my absolute favorite! It's why I bought the cd. I wasn't particularly crazy about a few of the tracks on the cd; however, after listening to in its entirety, I found myself enjoying more. So my advice to those that are considering TOURIST, listen first, and you might actually find yourself with a gem. ~Enjoy!
All time best Driving album.......2007-05-28
This album never gets old -- I have driven thousands of miles and km with it on -- driving at night, in the day, it's deep, grooving, not harsh. Fantastic
Great CD.......2007-05-14

Taking a cue from the Buddha Bar compilations, this collection of nu-jazz swing and martini music represents the sound and feel of a popular coffeehouse, in this case the Café De Flore in Paris' Saint-Germain district. With the likes of Serge Gainsbourg, Diana Krall. and Eartha Kitt represented, the music is both grown up enough to play for the in-laws and filled with enough hipster irony to attract members of the younger cocktail nation. The combination of young and old plays out literally on record as well; songs from icons like Nina Simone rub up against the 21st century dance-bop of Lakasha and Paris Combo. More jazz than dance, and much! better suited for a rainy day than sunny Ibiza-style chill compilations, it's ritzy cabaret-style pop. --Matthew Cooke
Album Description
This compilation conveys the mood of the place, timeless, light & romance of the Parisian cafe. 21 tracks from the likes of Diana Krall, Brigitte Bardot, Serge Gainsbourg, Blossom Dearie, & more. Sunnyside. 2002.

Ambience, cafe au lait and croissants!.......2005-09-24
I stumbled upon this amazing CD when I was shopping for the Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe series (all of which are fabulous by the way).
The ambience from the first track, "I Feel Blue" sets the scene for the whole album, however expect surprises, just when you settle back and chill to the tunes of more like this, (especially the beautiful track 8, "Ou Es-Tu Passe Mon Saint Germain Des Pres"? by Nicoletta), suddenly expect to tap your feet to the amazing "Quand On S'Aime" by Nana Mouskouri (I know!!!) and Michel Legrand. This uptempo track is contagious and continues through the CD. Contemporary artists and tunes mix with beautiful sounds from Nina Simone and Blossom Dearie. Put this CD on, make a cafe latte, sit back in the sun with the Sunday papers and just relax..you deserve it.
Chill world music that makes you happy........2004-03-16
I picked up Cafe De Flore to try and learn some French before a vacation, and I haven't been able to quit listening to this wonderful album. The songs are arranged perfectly, and the diverse selection of artists shows a true appreciation for all types of music.
If you like downtempo, chill, soul, or jazz, you will adore this album. Take a chance and learn some French. You won't regret it.

Escape to Paris.......2007-05-10
The music on this CD is excellent. Beautifully paired, you will feel like you are feasting on a cafe au lait and brioche in Paris.
Delightful Music.......2006-12-03
This album is a delight. I got it three weeks ago and have played it every day, along with both Pink Martini albums. I usually listen to jazz, but also enjoy world music. This is very different. Makes me want to dance; makes me happy. It also makes me sentimental, as I do remember some of these songs when I was growing up. It's eclectic but appeals to a wide range of ages. It would be great music to play for a party. I highly recommend it. You won't be disappointed.
Disappointing.......2006-10-14
I got this because I like jazz and Pink Martini. I'm pretty disappointed. I guess I was expecting something different. I'm not that thrilled with the vocalists. The arrangements strike me as odd. Several tracks are a lot more electronic than I was expecting. I was shooting for something more natural and recreative of a scratchy Paris-in-the-50s jazz album.
Voila.......2005-09-28
This is a mixture of old standards with a twist, fresh funky beats, with a touch of early French radio. I hadn't set to purchase this CD, but it was recommended. As it turns out I liked this selection and wished that I had not wasted money on my original selection. Jazz A Saint Germain has a couple of songs that I can do without, but overall I liked it.
Entertaining and offbeat.......2005-03-21
Sometimes you feel this CD is channeling the 40s and 50s, and sometimes it seems to be deconstructing the period and its sound, but it's almost always fun to listen to. I admit I needed time to warm up to it, but track 2 blew me away the first time I really paid attention to the bloodthirsty lyrics set to a funky death march. As a francophone, I enjoy it when I'm in the mood for hearing French, though Patricia Kaas or Paris Combo offer more subtle and sophisticated visions, if you can use that term for song. My only complaint is Debbie Harry's abominable French accent and her Ohio-flat American "r" spoiling a lovely song. I love her, am an old Blondie fan, but girlfriend should stay away from singing French.

Great Sunday brunch selection.......2007-01-16
Love this CD. Great background music for entertaining especially in the day.
Best of the Lot.......2006-08-15
I am a huge St. Germain / Tourist fan and have been trying to find similar music. I have Volume 1, 2 and 3 of this collection. This one comes the closest in style to St. Germain. The first four tracks are more upbeat than the rest of the CD but still overall excellent.
As the series continues, the music moves away from 'Electro Jazz' and more towards 'New age Jazz'. Still some great songs on volume II and III.
New Jazz.......2005-09-20
This is a great CD for lovers of New style techno Jazz such as Saint Germain. i Own Tourist and Boulavard both by Saint Germain, and this CD is Along those lines, and while only one song on the CD is actually by Saint Germain, it is way better then boulavard and at least equal to Tourist. this is one of the finest new jazz compilations ive ever heard, its very upbeat, and the songs are not too long, and although they have to be somewhat repetitive because of the genre, they arent to bad about that.....i recommend it to anyone looking for fun music.
Great ONE.......2003-11-25
The best electro-jazz cd i've heard to the date!!!
Not a review, but a question.......2003-09-20
I heard a bit of ocean games in a commerical in venezuela, and it listed the artist as St.Germain cafe. (I think it did, it was in spanish after all) Anyway my question is to anyone who already has this CD, Could you tell me who made ocean games? I'm trying to see if this the same song I'm thinking, so I'm gonna try searching for the artist. Pleae email me at grey_fox24@yahoo.com if you know.

caution: this CD is highly addictive.......2006-09-24
"Nuits de Saint-Germain des-Prés" is one of the many treasures now available through Gitanes' Jazz in Paris series. Without hyperbole, this recording is absolutely phenomenal. Django is in top form. His acoustic and electric solos blaze. Yes -Django plays electric guitar on this! At times, he really rips it up. While much has been written about Reinhardt's improvisational abilities, this recording also showcases his talent as a composer, bandleader and arranger. This brief CD is composed of three Decca sessions from 1951 to 1953 - the final year of his life. This time period is especially interesting. When most listen to Django, it tends to be his earlier work from the 1930's featuring Stéphane Grappelli in the Quintette du Hot Club de France. This is almost twenty years later. What is immediately striking is that the music doesn't sound like old time gypsy jazz. This is straight ahead modern jazz. While the music is astonishing, there are two drawbacks. If the listener is bothered by hiss, the treble may need to be turned down. Second, at less than thirty-seven minutes, the length is too brief. Why not combine this with another of Reinhardt's five releases in the Jazz in Paris series? Regardless of the drawbacks, this is essential for both Django enthusiasts and the uninitiated. "Nuits de Saint-Germain des-Prés" will amaze the listener and redefine how we think about Django Reinhardt's later body of work.

Not St. Germain's best, but worthy ..........2006-10-24
First off, I love the St. Germian compliation series by Wagram Distronic. The problem is keeping the first listeners interested before the product becomes mediocre and redundant. Congratulate Wagram Music for making it up to their 5th series.
Because the 6th series needs some explaining...
I loved Jamie Cullum's 'Devil May Care' because it is true, real, and wholesomely real vocals with a modestly cool beat. Mr. Scruff's 'Get a Move On' is a worldwide commercial success. The Might Bop's 'Feeling Good' leaves you just that. Spurprise to me was Skalpel's '1958', with real deep jazz/soul I had to listen to 3 times to appreciate. Wow, that was cool! Hird's 'Keep You Kimi' is another really cool song.
The problem is where are the bountiful, cutting-edge hits many expect from this series? The remainders are lacking in both beat and persona. Cookie-cutter songs that do nothing to motiviate nor exacerbate the St. Germain audience who have bought the series only to come to this questionable CD.
I recommend this CD solely for the Wagram faithful who know the Wagram music scene. Not a good CD for newbies or wannabies to the Nu-Jazz movement.
Hey, you can't win them all ...
-Steve
Jazzy, but not what I expect from Saint Germain.......2006-10-06
I have come to expect Saint Germain to be a nice blend of Jazz, soul, and techno. This CD is heavy on the jazz, but that's about it. If I want jazz I know how to spell Coltrane.
Getting back to the Jazz!.......2005-08-15
If you enjoyed des Pres Cafe II, you're gonna love this CD. The past couple of volumes seemed to be trying a bit too hard to create something where wasn't anything. However, this CD is fantastic... good mix of jazz, and some beat.
Another Great Album from Wagram Music.......2005-07-06
When I knew about the new compilation album of Saint Germain Des Prés Café, I thank that will be another electronic Jazz compilation without any relevant. But is not, it is Great. Like the slogan that Wagram give to the collection, "The Finest Nu Jazz compilation", I really recommend it.
More Energy & some Killer Cuts Mixed in.......2005-07-05
Won't bore you with too much history. I'll just say this is a pretty good series on the Wagram label (Hotel Costes, Buddha Bar, etc.). In general this has nu-jazz and old jazz, both sides sometimes remixed or as is, and some of them given electronic touches to show just how much jazz has changed and evolved through the years.
I certainly liked this one more than the last one because it had what volume 5 was missing - energy and that 'snap!' I liked in the music... what takes you by surprise, and gets your head nodding and thinking: "I gotta hear that again". You've got it from the get-go in this; particularly with Schema's own Doctor Abstract with "Stuck on Jazz". Then you've got a cut pretty much played out by Lincoln-Mercury, Mr. Scruff with "Get a Move On". But it's still a good song and brings some great memories to me. Other stellar tracks were Povo's "Good & Bad" (And what an album their feature release is!!), Horne Singers "Flat Foot" has some cool funk to it, Eddie Roberts "Roughneck" has a neat sound and some swing, and I've been trying to find Hird's album for more than just the great track featured here called "Keep You Kimi" (also called "Keep you Hird" on other LPs). However the top track to me on this was Two Banks of Four's "One Day". Soul singing, deep bass, powerful song. You gotta hear it!
I defininetly recommend this. I was nervous for the series after volume 5 but this is a welcome return to form as it has that 'thing' I loved about the other volumes; a bit of adventure, some random experiments and a spark. I admit that not all of the cuts got me - I was never a huge fan of Was-A-Bee's "This is What you Are"... it just sounds too cheesy to me but some of my friends love it to death. But in the end I think the set's strong and more than worth a good listen. Especially "One Day"... the cut blew me away. If you like this, check the others in the series and Break & Bossa 6 and 7.

Light, Fluid & Sweet .......2004-09-02
I must agree with a Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe fan who posted that this particular installment had "too much" vocals. I agree but partially. Though the album, on a whole, had lots of lyrics/vocals, the way each song segue-d into each other was smooth and light. I really appreciated that because that makes for some good lounging/dinner party entertainment. The problem that I have with other electro-jazz compilations is that the transition from song to song tends to be harsh and disruptive, but with this CD the opposite is true; that makes me happy. Lots of lyrics/vocals yes -- but plenty of smooth tunes that will have you bopping your head and snapping your fingers at one instance and closing your eyes and chillaxing at the next.
This one disappointed me.......2004-04-17
It may not disappoint you however. I liked the strong fusion of jazz, house, techno and latin found in the first three compilations. This one has more vocals, definitely underline the lounge here. I am an instrumentalist myself so I tend to favor the instrumentals with the cool beats that the first three releases featured.
Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe vol. 4.......2004-03-14
This is the best Saint Germain set as of yet.. It gets you from the beginning but especially track 3 "Flying Saucer" w/ DeeDee Bridgewater. I play this CD and my friends always ask me what I'm lisiting to, that's usually a good sign....
Back for a Fourth Cup........2004-01-24
Brought to you by the same people who are responsible for the "Paris Lounge" and "Hotel Costes" compilations, along comes the fourth entry in the "Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe." Now, it's been said before, but it obviously bears repeating: this has nothing to do with the Saint Germain that released the "Tourist" album. This is a mix of French-inspired jazz with various touches of downtempo electronica and bossa nova. I was actually pretty surprised that they released a fourth album and I didn't even know it was out until I stumbled upon it at a local record shop I frequent. Those who already own the prior three collections will have no reason to be disappointed with this one. The 19 tracks here offer a rich sampling of cafe lounge that's as tasty and as lively as a double espresso. I really liked Koop's breezy "Fuoco Fauto" as well as Metropolitain Jazz Affair's "Yunowhathislifeez" and the percussion-heavy "Equal" by Lunar Chipmunk featuring Oscar. Other cuts of note are "Nattergalen" by Bobby Hughes Combination and "Swoundosophy" by Infracom, both of which are excellent. The only dud is "Suddenly" by Matthew Herbert, which doesn't fit into the CD's jazzy theme and sticks out like a sore thumb. This is otherwise a must-buy for those who already have the prior three volumes and want to add a new twist to their downtempo collection. Grade: B+.
Zoom Across the Sky..........2004-01-22
Des Pres Cafe. This is one of my favorite lounge/nu-jazz series. It's released on the Wagram label, the same label that gives you other French comps like "Hotel Costes" and "Paris Lounge". Please note from the get-go - this is NOT a Ludovic Navarre aka "Saint Germain" cd (the dj/producer that did "Tourist" or "Boulevard"). This is a compilation of nu-jazz/lounge/electronic dj tunes. I've reviewed a few of the others and I'm always impressed with each new one that comes out. Safe to say, volume does NOT disappoint..
What I like most about this CD is the flow. It starts out nice and easy, then picks up with a pretty bangin' UFO cut followed by a Koop remix. On down the line you have Nicola Conte re-doing the favor with "Tonight" in the way he does - jittery bossa. You also have a bit of latin in there with a twist, thanks to Zuco 103, and Infracom's cut "Swoundosophy" has a certain sweet old-school jazz influence - guess which one? Bobby Hughes COmbination, Metropolitan Jazz Affair, Paul Hunter, Beady Belle, Kruder & DOrfmeister, Loopless, Nicolette are a few of the other names that contribute. My favorite cuts were definitely "Suddenly", "Flying Saucer", "Squire for Hire" among others... although admittedly, "Suddenly" seems a tad out of place. Also - check the Nicolette cut "No Government"; I dig the DJ Cam mixing background sample in it.
Highly recommended! This one in particular is a bit more consistent that the previous ones and the sound is more mature. I'd almost say they took a page out of Break & Bossa vol 6 (first five cuts of cd2 in that series) on how to put together a good nu-jazz/bossa release. Only down cuts to me were the Kruder Dorfmeister track. If you dig this, by all means check out the previous Saint Germain Des Pres Cafe, Break & Bossa 6, DJ Cam's "Mad Blunted Jazz" and maybe "Get Into the Martini Mood vol. 1" The Koop and Conte remixes are available on great albums: Jet Sounds Revisted and "Waltz for Koop: Alternative Takes"

Fantastic
