Customer Reviews:
Soulfully Pleasing!!.......2007-04-03
In this album, Nina Simone touches the soul. Actually all of her albums do, thanks to her unique voice. She keeps things interesting by switching from slow tempo ballads to up-beat funky jams. I recommend this album to anyone who appreciates a strong, sensual and soulful woman = Nina Simone.
Quintessential PowerVoice.......2007-02-10
Ten or so years ago, when I lived in wild and wikkit El Lay, I was having drinks with a client at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons (which as we all know, is NOT in Beverly Hills proper, but just across the street on Doheny). As we sat there, my client and I heard a woman (man?) talking just out of eyesight. The voice, while not loud, cut through the pre-cocktail hour buzzle like a small frigate---clean, strong, and distinctive. She wasn't being loud, it was just that that voice...that voice. My client persuaded me to go find out who was speaking, as we were mesmerized. I went into the next little salon off the bar area and saw an elegant black woman talking with an earnest young white man in his first grown-up suit, in his first grown-up A&R job (probably fresh from USC business school). She was talking and he had the most incoherent look on his face. In retrospect, I think he had never met someone like her, and of course, he never will again. I hope he appreciated her. I asked, "Excuse me, but your voice is so distinctive---it sounds very familiar. Do I know you?" She stopped her narrative, languidly looking up at me, extended her hand in a regal but not royal way, and simply said, "I am Nina Simone."
I have to admit that I had heard of her, but couldn't have named one song she'd recorded. Even in the hip 80's and 90's, she was radically underappreciated and heard in the States. Needless to say,(and this was way before amazon.com et al)I raced to Tower and bought several of her recordings. This recording is a favorite, and the more I listen to this amazing singer, the more I wonder why she never had a wider American audience. Her singing, like her speaking, was so very distinctive and mesmerizing. You may not want to, but you cannot help yourself from stopping to listen. I have had more prople ask me "Who's playing?" when one of her songs comes up in the mix.
Her take on any song is memorable. Her voice has a resonant quality unlike the thin, reedy, over-produced songbirds on the charts today. Most modern singers in any genre seem hell-bent on showing off what their voices CAN do. It's like nude scened in a movie: gets your attention, but does nothing to move the plot along. Same with all the vocal melisma of current artists---all the shreiking does nothing to sell the song. With La Nina, it is just pure singing, straight out and true.
Try this album. You may not like it at first. Her voice is unique and requires attentive listening. But like dark chocolate, which might taste bitter at first, somehow seduces you and milk chocolate becomes a little ho-hum. So it is with Nina Simone. You may not want to play her for your next rave, but with friends over for drinks or dinner, Nina playing in the next room, soon everyone will be asking, "Who's playing?" And you can turn on a new audience to an incomparable, unique voice.
A great CD for what it was.......2007-02-08
Nina Simone is someone that put out so many albums, it would not be financially practical to try to collect them all. This compilation CD does show her wearing many different hats through different eras of music. For example, she does some good Blues work on "Do I Move You?" and a good live performance on "Mississippi Goddamn."
Some pieces are more vocal, and others are more piano driven/ instrumental, and that versatility is enjoyable.
For me, this has been a good introduction to Nina Simone and likely all of her that I will need to buy. I believe that this compilation has been sufficiently broad to stand on its own in a CD collection.
Great quality CD.......2007-01-11
Since I was not familiar with Nina simone's work, I was very happy to have a good sample of her most popular songs. She has an extremely expressive voice and a truly out of the ordinary range. Her piano playing is also really good. The recording on this disc are clear and well mastered (and I am an audiophile, pretty picky about this kind of things.).
Anyway, when I learned that we lost this disc, and although we did buy some other recordings of her, I reordered it. I wanted to have this particular set of songs from Nina Simone. A great buy!
Mezmerizing.......2006-03-29
I purchased this CD and its like nothing I have ever heard. Soft soulful sophisticated. Its in a stack of amazing artists in my cd rack next to Billie Holiday, Eva Cassidy, Ella Fitzgerald, Melody Gardot, Ray Charles, and Cole Porter.
Just that good!

Like Etta James, Nina Simone has often been larger than her material, and that's the case on much of this CD, selected from her recordings for RCA Victor in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Powerful and deeply personal songs, such as "To Be Young, Gifted, and Black," "Sunday in Savannah," and the spirited, earthy "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl," are mixed in with ephemeral songs by the Bee Gees' Gibb brothers. At other times, however, Simone's gospel-strong voice and emotional reserves are well suited to the superior rock and pop material, such pieces as Bob Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" and Randy Newman's understated "I Think It's Going To Rain Today." While the Simone signature piano frequently gives way to folk guitar and studio orchestrations, the apparent conflict between singer and material may sometimes heighten these performances, emphasizing and isolating Simone's passionate, enduring vocals. In the case of songs like Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles," the singer has simply proven herself more durable than the songs. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Rare collection you'll ever have in (maybe) a million years!.......2004-03-21
I started getting familiar with Nina Simone's songs after I watched Briggit Fonda's 'The Assassin' in early 1990's. After then, I found Nina Simone's compilation album at local record store. Then I was and still crushed with her distinctive soul-jazzy vocal. This collection is highly recommended, especially since it has brother Gibbs (Robin, Barry, and late Maurice) compositions (I Can't See Nobody and To Love Somebody) which are screamed by the greatest Miss Nina Simone!!! Trust me!!! You have to get this collection one way or another...
Great music will always be great music.......2001-09-29
Stating the obvious, Nina's voice is up there with the best of them... The Essential Nina Simone is an excellent "all 'round" album in that it gives a small taste of everything Nina sang and sang so well: blues, soul, gospel, rock, folk, R+B, etc.
It is an excellent tool for singers and instrumentalists alike: Nina also plays "league" piano and her arrangements are reflective of her ability and desire to get to the core message of the song and impart it as efficiently as possible - Nina makes the point, says what she feels about it and moves on. That is an Art! This is a great introductory CD for anyone just getting into jazz such as kids because usually their ears have to adjust from the pop/rock they are used to - I lend it to my own students in music. It is however, still resonably early jazz vocal music so be careful if you're looking for something more "beboppy" or avantgarde like Miles Davis or Kurt Elling. Having said this though, I love it all and I believe anyone serious about music should open their heart and mind to the whole deal otherwise you might just miss out.
This is music mainly for lovers of voice, and for those who get off on passionate discussion of human morale and values through song. It also makes for great background music if you want guests to relax.
This is a brilliant album that shouldn't ever collect dust. I own over about 250 cds not including tapes, LPs etc and this was one of the first I ever owned that has retained it's "GREAT" status.
You can trust me on this one!!!!
Nina Simone is incredible.......2000-02-24
Definitely buy this album. Losing yourself in Nina Simone's rich voice is a heavenly occurence.
I need her.......2000-01-29
I could not live my life if it weren't for Nina Simone. Every ounce of what is felt is experienced when I listen to her. A blessed event.
Stupendous.......2000-01-16
The great lady had done it again. Sitting in the audience at A & T State University in the 70's, I felt her to be one of the most arrogant and rude entertainers I had ever seen on stage. I did not know or understand her message. Yet, in spite of my perception, she was singing something to me that I felt but did not comprehend. One cannot live outside of his/her experience. Now, 30 years later, I finally get it! This is an album which I play over and over. Each time brings new discoveries. Only a piece like "Sunday in Savannah" captures the essence of small town America like no other. Where are you Nina? Come home to North Carolina. I want to see another live performance!

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!.......2004-03-22
I bought this volume II from Nina Simone along with her volume I from her essential. We have so many divas but there's only one I can recommend you to devote with. And she must be Miss Nina Simone through this collection with (specially( her two massive songs, (late)George Harrison's composition'Here Comes The Sun' and Paul Anka's composition 'My Way'. She also incredibly sang Terry Kirkman's 'Cherish' for us. Don't miss her 'Oo-h Child'. What more can I say? SHE IS GODDESS WITH HER ENCHANTED FLAME!!!!!!
Worth the Price of Purchase.......2001-04-23
No Nina Simone CD is ever a disappointment. Even so, I took a chance with this one since the Volume 2 songs aren't as commercial as her earlier version on RCA. I was curious too because this CD has more covers of songs made famous by their originators, especially seeing what Simone does with "My Way", a song long identified with Frank Sinatra, who isn't exactly a stylistic match for Nina. Well, she doesn't disappoint. It's always interesting what Simone does with a cover song made famous by someone else. The arrangement and moods Nina brings to these songs are refreshing and as good, maybe even better, than the original versions.
Hands down, the standout track here is her cover of Bob Dylan's "Just Like a Woman"----Wow!! The intensity, tenderness and sorrow spilled forth by Nina on this track are breathtaking and a 5-hanky tearjerker. Characteristically, Simone achieves this without any sentimentality. These songs were recorded by Nina during a turbulent time in U.S. history, the time of Vietnam and protests of every kind. I feel the central theme in this collection is compassion and human understanding, and some of the songs selected for this collection reflects that. Whether it's "Oooh Child" "Peace of Mind" or "Human Touch", Simone's voice reflects hope, love and understanding of the human condition. Definitely worth the price of admission. This is a 5-star rating. "Just Like A Woman" alone is worth it!
High Priestess for a reason..........2000-07-21
Yes. This is an excellent album. Everything Dr. Simone does is wonderful, but this is the most emotional album I've ever heard. "Here Comes the Sun" is, thanks to POINT OF NO RETURN, quite popular (and quite good, too). Nina singing Dylan is always remarkable, and "Just Like a Woman" is even better than "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues" and "I Shall Be Released" from Volume One. In "The Human Touch" we get to hear a calm, melodic Simone... Her voice is perfectly-- PERFECTLY-- suited for singing Jacques Brel's songs. "Ne Me Quitte Pas" is powerful, but "The Desperate Ones" is even more emotionally (and artistically) extreme. AMAZING! Of course, "My Way" is terriffic. Imagine Nina Simone doing anything her way. Much better than the Sinatra version. MARVELOUS ALBUM. BUY IT!
