On The Moon

Peter Cincotti was noticed when he was still an undergrad at Columbia University because he had a certain facility at the piano and also because, let's face it, he was blessed with youth and good looks. On his second album, Cincotti follows the smooth jazz-pop groove also treaded by Norah Jones, with a smattering of horn-driven swing à la Harry Connick, Jr. The main problem is that Cincotti's milquetoast vocal interpretations don't usually bring much new to the material. His singing on "I Love Paris" isn't half as interesting as the orchestral arrangement for instance, while his take on Andrew Lippa's "Raise the Roof" is too subdued for such a rousing song. The CD makes for fine background music, but there are better versions of these songs to be found, and any Rat Pack album has smore swing and more style. On this record, Cincotti sounds like a musician who's not quite sure how to apply his natural gifts. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07

If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.

5 out of 5 stars Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11

Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11

If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!

4 out of 5 stars BSG.......2007-04-10

Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.

5 out of 5 stars Agree with everyone else.......2007-03-28

There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars At The Movies by Andre Rieu.......2007-05-20

Andre Rieu brings a warmth and pop-like aire to his music. Here he plays popular music with a classical orchestra and adds his special ingredients to it ie:humor (musical jokes for the serious listener),fun,light-heartedness.It's a band of very talented musicians having alot of fun as is evident in the playing and especially if you've seen them in concert.I can "hear" the smiles on their not serious faces by their style of playing...less staccato and with more feeling.Andre and company swing and dance through every track climaxing on Ravel's Bolero from the movie "10".

4 out of 5 stars very beautiful.......2007-01-09

This cd is very beautiful. It captures the songs wonderfully. The orchestra does a fine job.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing Music.......2006-11-03

Andre Rieu presents wonderful songs in a very inspirational way. They are to be enjoyed as "dinner music" or just for times when the TV is off and you need some "quiet time". It is a great grouping of melodies.

5 out of 5 stars from texas--AND FROM A MUSIC LOVER.......2006-08-30

ANDRE RIEU TAKES US ON A WONDERFUL TRIP BACK IN TIME TO THE MOVIES YOU CAN=T FORGET AND THE MUSIC THAT MADE THEM CLASSICS. DO BUY IT. IT IS A TREASURE...

4 out of 5 stars Andre Rieu - Music for the masses.......2006-08-10

Sometimes you just want enjoyable music as a backdrop to the job at hand. I turn to Andre to get me through these events. Probably not a glowing endorsement, but if you know of Mr. Rieu's feelings about music, he would just smile and nod his head. This is music to just enjoy for the sake of music - and that is a good thing.

There's no better example of American pop culture's hall-of-mirrors ethos than producer Alan Carr's relentlessly buoyant 1978 film adaptation of the stage musical Grease. Inspired by that decade's rampant 50's nostalgia, it now paradoxically evokes the campy 70's excesses that spawned it. That sense of recycled decades in collision is underscored repeatedly on this deluxe, double-disc Grease-fest, especially on the set's second disc of bonus materials that spans vintage singles of the title track (its instrumental B-side) and "Greased Lightnin'," some sing-along karaoke tracks, and a handful of alternately slick/techo-savvy remixes (originally produced for the film's 20th anniversary) that are testament to its enduring, era-defying appeal. The original soundtrack itself has been treated to a stellar digital remastering that fills disc one, and remains a joyous monument to camp, sheer ambition, and exuberant nostalgic illusions. Includes a slip-cased, double-fold-out case and new booklet with complete song lyrics. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars You 're The One That I Want.......2007-04-03

The complete Grease experience. This cd is a two disc-set with disc one being the complete soundtrack, while disc two is all bonus material including the popular Grease Megamix. Fans of the movie would want to make this cd an essential part of their music collection.

5 out of 5 stars Prepare to be transported to Summer Nights.......2006-03-26

Well here we are with a great piece of history.

This album has not only captured the spirit of the movie but the essence of a 1970's version of the 1950's. I have seen this play live and yes some things are different. Yet I grew up on the movie. I even find myself singing some of the songs now and then. Of course you will never see me singing "Look At Me, I'm Sandra Dee." However I do keep this in my car as great driving music. This album is not you can pick apart and say things like missing songs, in the wrong order etc. It sounds and feels just right. There will be many versions yet this one is the Grease - Deluxe Edition [ORIGINAL RECORDING REMASTERED] [SOUNDTRACK] gives you more information about each of the tracks allowing you to feel that you have inside information and to feel that you know more of what went into the making of each song.

5 out of 5 stars Great Soundtrack & Fun Extras from an Enduring Musical........2004-07-06

I'm enjoying listening to this great soundtrack that I loved as a child after a long hiatus. I had it on 8-track 25 years ago. So it's fitting that I should get the 25th Anniversary Edition on CD. The 24 songs from the movie are just as everyone remembers them, so I'll talk about the Bonus Disc, which contains 10 alternative versions of the songs plus 2 previously unreleased instrumentals from the film.

Track 1 on the Bonus Disc is an instrumental version of the film's theme, "Grease", written and produced by Barry Gibb. Frankie Valli's voice has been replaced by a saxophone. The chorus is vocal, but the voices are not those in the original song. You could use this as a sing-along version, as it would be easy to sing over the sax. Tracks 2-5 are officially sing-along versions. "Summer Nights" includes the chorus vocals from the film and sounds good. "You're the One That I Want" has new chorus vocals of questionable merit. "Sandy" is a new arrangement. It's not as good as the film version, but you can sing along. Track 6 is the single version of "Greased Lightning" that you may have heard on the radio back in the day. It's differs from the original in that the bad words have been replaced for radio airplay. Tracks 7-8 are previously unreleased instrumentals from the film. "Greased Up and Ready to Go" is lively. Tracks 9-10 are mixes that I occasionally hear on the radio. The "Grease Megamix" and the "Grease Dream Mix" are fun, if awkward. Tracks 11-12 are Martian Remixes of "Summer Nights" and "You're the One That I Want". They retain the original vocals, but set them to a Latin rhythm. They make pretty good dance tracks.

This 2-disc set isn't in a jewel case. The case is paperboard with 4 panels that fold out. This is inside of a clear vinyl slip case on which the tracks are written. This isn't convenient packaging. On the bright side, the case won't crack in the mail. Tucked inside one of the panels is a booklet that contains lyrics and credits.

The "Grease: 25th Anniversary Deluxe Edition" is a terrifically fun soundtrack to one of the all-time great movie musicals. And for all those preteen girls who go wild over the movie with each new generation, the bonus material is perfect for parties and horsing around.

3 out of 5 stars If You Love Grease, You'll Love This - Only 1 Major Flaw.......2004-05-15

Disc 1 is like the original album, which I also own. 1 major flaw is that "Love Is A Many Splendored Thing" cuts off at the very end of it! I was upset by this, hence the 3 stars instead of 4. Disc 2 is a lot of fun w/some remixes and sing-a-longs, all in all, I'm pretty happy with it being that I'm a HUGE Grease fan. If you like Grease, you'll love this, it's fun. Too bad when they "remastered" it, they didn't catch there 1 mistake. Oh well, at least I have it on another album.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars This album is great! Truly distinctive............2007-05-17

I remember my introduction to the music of Swedish band, The Cardigans. I can tell you the time and place. I was a freshman in high school, and my class took a trip to the movie theater to see a screening of WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO AND JULIET. Their hit song, "Lovefool" was blaring while Juliet (Claire Danes) is preparing to see her lover, Romeo (Leonardo Dicaprio) in secret. I thought the song's infectious melody and cute vocals, from their female lead singer was so catchy! Also, the lyrics were border-line masochistic. They alluded to the foolishness that some women knowingly buy into in relationships, just to keep their partners, regardless of what damage they are being subjected to. I had to buy the cassette and see if this song was really "the peak" for these Swedish rockers, or if they were merely one hit wonders.

I am happy to tell you that these Swedes definitely lived up to my hopes, and I found their music interchangably upbeat and unsettling. The Cardigans is best described as conflicted rock music. They deliver punchy lyrics, set to a combination of percussive, bouncy accompaniment and dark, more slow and (even) demented background music. In fact, some of their songs almost sound like outtakes from younger versions of the S&M inspired band, The Velvet Underground. "Your New Cuckoo," "Been It," and "Losers" are three examples of their unabashedly honest songs, along with "Lovefool." Though, I had limited exposure and knowledge of sado-masochistic relationships, I had enough knowledge to understand what they were alluding to. Dark as the subject matter was, I appreciated it and still do today.

4 out of 5 stars Submission.......2007-01-03

The theme of this album could be described in one word: submission. The submissiveness shown in relationships both positive and negative, and both are explored thoroughly here.

Highlights:

Your New Cuckoo is about discovery of your partner's infidelity. And not just the infidelity of the loins, but of the heart, which is the most destructive form of infidelity.

Been It has grown up lyrics like "I was your mother, I was your father, I was your sister, your mistress, maybe I was your who/re. Who could ask for more." But it gets too repetitive.

Heartbreaker is a song about a hook/er. "I'll please you for free." "Tell me I'm good, but I know I am bad." "Don't do that, don't use that bat"? There's a looming fear on this track that creeps into the next one.

Happy Meal II.
I assume there's a Happy Meal I somewhere, right? One of my favorites from the record, but is this really a happy song about an anticipated rendezvous? It seems to me her near obsessed preoccupation with wanting everything to be perfect shows an undercurrent of abuse? Fear? Doom? Maybe a man with serious anger problems who likes to beat his girl if her books aren't arranged in order, or her made up stories aren't amusing. "Shape up my face, eager for the meeting." Maybe she needs to shape up her face to hide that black eye he gave her the night before. Happy Meal just doesn't come off as romantic. Per/verse is more like it.

Never Recover
I really like this song. It's breezy and infectious.

Lovefool is a poppy song that sticks out on this record. Another song about submission: willing a guy to be with you despite his lack of love and concern. While the song has serious lyrics of desperation, no one could deny with a straight face that any pop act that all the "sophisticated music lovers on their high horses" hate could have made this record. I can see Britney Spears singing it right now. Especially considering Brit and Nina have similar-sounding voices.

Losers
My third favorite after Lovefool and Happy Meal.

Iron Man
I really like this light interpretation of the Heavy Metal classic.

Bottom Line: I'm still not totally convinced The Cardigans are a band I could really love the way I do the other female-led band No Doubt. There is a mystery and darkness that shrouds The Cardigans, and if not for Lovefool, I still wouldn't know who they were. I'm in no hurry to buy anything else from them, but this record is very solid and creative.

5 out of 5 stars happy 10th anniversary.......2006-11-29

10 years later the cardigans and Nina are still beautiful. This band is up there with Pixies/breeders flaming lips and Nirvana. These bands have been really the only what I call innovators borderline genius. I will feel more creativity/emotion in a cardigans cd then Madonna or Mariah Carey all though Mariah I think stayed as long as she did because of her voice I don't really like her music that much. But this album and Alanis one good record was the changing point out of grunge. Although in 1995 music was already changing to where we are today. There is no more genres. Except now everyone wants to make a cd and record companies are totally out of touch. They sign unartists Lohan/Hilton/underwood/clarkson/daughter of ozzy/lisa marie presley/sean lennon/trump next. what do these people have in common. Im not going to say anything. It's not art it's manufactured so they feel they are a artist...WRONG. I believe 80 percent what gets released every week by a lot of these big labels is pure trash. They are really not making money they are supplying more marketing and advertising for what is currently popular in trends. So there is the one genre that really isn't.

5 out of 5 stars Flawless CD........2006-06-10

This is really good music. The Bass player is a master. What strikes me about this group and especially this album is the extremely heavy base (like the Peppers) contrasted with the soft beautiful voice of the lead singer. If you want to hear good music this is it. I do much of my writing listening to this CD.

3 out of 5 stars Do you believe in the after-LIFE?.......2006-02-10

The Cardigans had me at Carnival...and continued to hold my interest with "First band on the moon". This album is somewhat of the same formula that made LIFE such a great album. Nina's voice is still syrupy-sweet..and the music is very imaginative and catchy...but you could hear the beginnings of the changes of the Cardigans music, the "growing-up" phase that most bands go through, which leads to darker lyrics and music...and if you are a fan of their first album, it can be a little dissapointing. But all in all, this album is very listenable and is a good addition to the Cardigans catalog..."New Cuckoo" stands out as the best track on the album, with all the rest of the music as good as they should be.

4 out of 5 stars Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

3 out of 5 stars Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

2 out of 5 stars Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

Jimmy Buffett's music has always had an easy-in-the-islands feel to it, and if his songs seem like postcards sent from exotic locations or notes hastily scribbled on a bar napkin, that's more or less what they are. On Buffett's 31st album, the singer/songwriter, bestselling author, pilot, and son of a son of a sailor offers alternately wry and sentimental observations on everything from our impending doom ("Waiting for the Next Explosion") and the appeal of Cajun food ("I Will Play for Gumbo") to the ultimate vacation getaway ("Beach House on the Moon") and life's sweet mysteries ("Oysters & Pearls"). Buffett also tries on a couple of intriguing covers, including Bruce Cockburn's pensive "Pacing the Cage," Mose Allison's sly "You Call It Jogging," and Fred Neil's laid-back "Lucky Stars." Thanks to the return of a few long-lost members of his Coral Reefer Band, Beach House on the Moon often recalls Buffett's early albums--cause enough for Parrotheads everywhere to fire up the blender, string up the hammock, and give this one a spin. --Daniel Durchholz

3 out of 5 stars honestly..mathsux...3 * max..........2006-12-08

Math sux made me almost waver...to remind myself why I like him, I immediately resort to his old catalog...math sux, seriously...probably worst song he's ever let be known

3 out of 5 stars Another step down in quality.......2005-09-07

Just as Jimmy's albums took a general downturn from the 70's to 80's, and from the 80's to the 90's, this album again shows another step down in quality; further distancing himself farther from the classic music he once wrote in the 70's.

I mean, I'm a big Parrothead, and I REALLY want to like this album, but he makes it so very difficult with the weak material included. In fact, with repeated listens, it's actually getting harder to enjoy it.

Jimmy just seems to be coasting most of the time on this disc (coasting in a bad way), going through the motions, on autopilot. He really needed/needs a reality check of his music, away from his current trend, and back to something of substance. I doubt that this album will hold up to the test of time as his 70's-80's albums have.

Sorry

4 out of 5 stars JIMMY 'S BEACH HOUSE .......2005-05-28

Jimmy Buffett makes a very good attempt to capture the population which may not know his tried and true "Margaritaville" Music. Some of the "Coral Reefers" background musicians showed up on this session which adds a lot to this CD. The songs are funky and playful and sometimes even moody. The lyrics and tunes are good enough to make you want to lean back in your summer chair and sing along, with a tall drink in hand and nowhere to go. Jimmy Buffett never takes himself or his music too seriously. I like the second cut very much, "Permanent Reminder of a Temporary Feeling". It is the perfect anthem for this or any other Buffett CD. Buffett has a breezy way of takiing us all on journeys of the imagination where everyone lives the beach bum life and is better for it. It's the "what me worry?" attitude where money, clothes, jobs, and success don't matter much. Of course to say that Buffett hasn't earned a fine living through "merchandizing" through his many restaurants and web-pages is beside the point. There are enough parrotheads who would like to believe the next "beach house is on the moon" and it is accessible to each of us. So lay back and enjoy this CD.

5 out of 5 stars I wanna live on the Moon!.......2002-10-12

I recently began to re-visit Jimmy Buffett's body of work.

Yes, I am a Parrothead...long before they named us that.

But, more than that, I love the music. And even more than that, I love a good story put to music.

Buffett has done himself proud on this CD. The stories he tells about tattoos (PERMANENT REMINDER OF A TEMPORARY FEELING), failed love affairs (YOU CALL IT JOGGING), being a caveman in the era of the world wide web (FLESH AND BONE), being a true son of the south (I WILL PLAY FOR GUMBO), and the advice he gives to misery husbands (SPENDING MONEY) are top notch. Not only are they musically pleasing, they're very well written.

I'd like to ask Buffett what comes phirst -- the music or the words.

However, this year on the first anniversary of 9/11, I was really struck by the words to PACING THE CAGE. It was if I was hearing it for the first time. Made me weep.

Get this CD and enjoy songwriting and the joy of performing at its best.

Go, Jimmy!

3 out of 5 stars What Happened?.......2002-02-13

Alright ive been a parrothead since i was 7. I always look for Jimmy to start my summer and end my summer. I start with Barometer Soup and end it with Mexico. I was about 13 when this cd came out, but i never really got a chance to listen to since i still loved Buffetts old stuff. Well when i got a chance listen to it and i was extremely disapointed, I mean what happened to him? Is trying to hit Pop and get on the radio? Barely any songs on this cd have any caribbean-boat-music feel to em there just simple folk songs. Math suks...first second i heard this song i didnt loose through the whole thing, this song is by far the worse buffett song ever written, terrible just terrible. Now Beach House aint that bad its got its high points such as Beach House On The Moon, I Don't Know I Don't Care, I Will Play For Gumbo, and of course the tear-jerker Pacing the Cage.(Which if you ever stumble upon live version of Pacing The Cage from when Buffett kicked off the summer on the Today Show summer of 99 I think, listen to it, it is spectacular) Well it really doesnt matter how this cd comes out buffett rarely plays his new stuff on his tour. Basically this cd is worth burnin if somebody u know has it, but dont buy it this cd gets thrown in buffetts dispointing cd along with Somewhere Over China.

I LOVE this cd. A friend loaned me her cd to listen to and I just went ahead and bought it. It's awesome! I listen to it everyday. Harry Connick Jr. "Oh My Nola" is a good one too so buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-01-09

We purchased this CD over the summer and have been listening to it practically non-stop ever since. Bought it for all the adults on our holiday list this year and got positive feedback from everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2006-01-28

I think I might be the minority here, I actually like this one better than his first album. Cincotti simply sings much better now. Although his voice still doesn't quit grab me, maybe he should foucus more on his piano solo, he surelly can play piano quite well. And add some spark. For his young age, I would expect more energy.

The sophmore effort is great! Cincotti has CHOPS and raw talent still being developed. I for one appreciate sharing in his growth..at 22 this guy can arrange a song like it's nobodies business, not to mention, compose, play and sing... on top of being a hottie! Please to the bitter fruit that spoke before me, have a glass of wine and listen to On the Moon again.

3 out of 5 stars A little more pizazz, please.......2005-09-20

Cincotti's first album was a whirling frolick on piano and vocals through some old favorites and some new additions among jazz and swing repertoire. "On the Moon" still delivered great music but was a little less than I expected as this artists second album.
His compositions and instrumental arrangements are exquisite (with the exception of the harmonica in Bali H'ai). His own composition "He's Watching" seems the best song on the album to me as it's his own creation and he pours the passion into the vocals and instrumentals. I think the bluesy energy for this song may have carried over into the rest of the album making songs like "Raise the Roof" and "I Love Paris" a little to wistful for the swinging style one would ahve predicted he deliver them with.
It's still a good album though, and I look forward to his next album in hopes of another great compilation of original and classic swing.

A brief glance at the packaging for this recording might make you think New Age, and indeed this label normally offers recordings in that vein. The disc's cover tells nothing about the music inside--all we see are the ruins of an ancient abbey, the moon in the sky on the front, the sun on the back. But wait. If you get far enough to listen to the recording, you'll find one of the most beautiful and beautifully programmed choral recordings in the catalog. The compositions, organized into the categories "Music of the Morning Rite" and "Music of the Evening Rite," are mostly from 16th- century composers--Byrd, Taverner, Sheppard, White--with a few Gregorian chants and a gorgeous rendition of the 20th-century motet by Duruflé, "Ubi caritas." Conductor/choral music legend John Rutter has assembled a program that's both uplifting and restful; the performance is faultless. One could only complain about the short (39 and a half minutes) playing time. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars Choral work at it's finest........2007-06-03

I really enjoyed this work. I was first introduced to this title through American Gramophone's website and was also my first introduction in the works of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. You do not have be religious to enjoy this work. I find the music uplifting and very sublime. I have listened to it many times, and I find that my favorite period to play it is in the morning hours. .

I have since purchased many other Rutter titles including "Images of Christ", and more recently "Lighten our Darkness"

5 out of 5 stars Light and shadows.......2003-07-29

Recorded in the Great Hall of University College School, London, the Cambridge Singers under the direction of John Rutter produced a true masterpiece in 'Brother Sun, Sister Moon' in 1988. The title derives from a famous prayer by St. Francis of Assisi, and is inspired by liturgical music from (or derivative of) the Middle Ages and Renaissance polyphony and Gregorian chant. The music is meditative, uplifting, and elegant in simplicity and stunning vocal quality.

    --Brother Sun--
The first half of the disc is largely composed of pieces from the liturgical Morning Prayer cycle, concentrating on texts from Easter, the most important of Christian days. From the Alleluia to the Acclamations and Surrexit Christus Hodie (Christ is risen today), the flow from Gregorian Chant to compositions by Byrd, Taverner and Palestrina (giants of this type of music) in increasing energy and glory, as befits both a Morning service (time to wake up!) as well as a celebration of the resurrection of Christ. Perhaps of particular note here is the cantoring of bass Gerald Finley in the Easter Acclamations.

    --Sister Moon--
The second half of the disc concentrates on music of the evening; in particular, the Compline service, a service of unwinding and sombre meditation with which monastic communities conclude their days of work and worship. Many churches have reincorporated Compline into a regular cycle of services; some have even done so as a result of exposure to this recording. The music here is softer and less energetic than that of Morning prayer. This includes music from Whyte and Sheppard (also masters of the Medieval-to-Renaissance liturgical polyphony) as well as a brilliant motet by twentieth century composer Duruflé for the Ubi Caritas.

    --Liner Notes--
The notes for this recording include the titles and words, in both Latin and English, for each of the pieces recorded here. It has an excerpt from a prayer by St. Francis, and a basic introduction to the music relating it historically and liturgically. One thing conspicuously missing is any biographical information about John Rutter, or any descriptive information about the Cambridge Singers apart from the basic listing of singers.

    --John Rutter--
Rutter was born in London and educated at Clare College, Cambridge. This was where his career as a composer, arranger and conductor began. His early work was with groups at King's College Chapel at Cambridge as well as the Bath Choir and Philharmonic Orchestra. He has worked for the BBC providing music for educational series such as 'The Archaeology of the Bible Lands', until in 1979 he began forming the Cambridge Singers, and has continued a remarkable career of performance and recording as their director ever since.

    --The Cambridge Singers--
The Cambridge Singers are a mixed choir of voices, many of whom were members of choir of Rutter's college, Clare College, Cambridge. While they specialise in English and Latin liturgical pieces, they have a wide range of recordings that span from modern compositions (including a remarkable requiem by Rutter) to English folk songs of the Middle Ages. For this particular recording, the choir consisted of eleven sopranos, six altos, six tenors, and six basses.

    4 out of 5 stars Cambridge Singers = Quality.......2002-05-23

I do love this cd, but tend to play certain tracks as my first love is chant. I play the Victimae Paschali Laudes in the car and sing along - it is so very beautiful that this rendition of this Easter Chant is worth purchasing this cd alone. I love that one track so much, my only criticism of the cd is that I wish they'd centered the entire cd on chant - and I hope they will do one like that in the future because the quality of the voices is stunning.

5 out of 5 stars American Gramaphone, please reissue this title........2000-03-30

I originally obtained this CD through Minnesota Public Radio. The first time I listened to the Ubi Caritus, I was moved to tears. The CD became my favorite to play at Christmas and other times. I gave the CD to a friend who has moved to Oregon, deeply regret that it is no longer in production.

John Rutter trains his singers to sing without vibrato, and blends their voices with such balance that they come together as a single instrument. The selection on this CD is perfect to demonstrate the clarity and richness of this ensemble. If American Gramaphone does reissue this title, I will be first in line to purchase it.
