Pal Joey (1995)

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The cynical, frank tale of a second-rate Chicago singer and the women who lust after him, Rodgers and Hart's Pal Joey stood in stark contrast to most other Broadway shows of 1940. Watered down by Hollywood in 1957, the show was restored to its original frank, raunchy splendor by the team of New York's Encores! series. The stellar cast performing that concert version (Patti LuPone, Peter Gallagher, Bebe Neuwirth, and Vicki Lewis) rises up to the challenge and takes obvious delight in the witty, brassy songs. LuPone is especially magnificent: in full control of her material ("Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," "What Is a Man?"), her Vera Simpson is playful and sensual--a sly, sexy dame, as Joey would say. This is classic American musical theater at its best. --Elisabeth Vincentelli --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

5 out of 5 stars with a song in my heart/pal joey sound tracks.......2007-03-31

I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.

5 out of 5 stars With A Song In My Heart CD.......2007-03-19

I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.

4 out of 5 stars A Jane Froman double feature........2006-09-16

This DRG CD pairs two recordings starring Jane Froman.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.

PAL JOEY

Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.

In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.

4 out of 5 stars "Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30

While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."

4 out of 5 stars another great twofer from DRG.......2004-01-21

Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".

The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.

Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.

The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.

The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".

A fine addition to your collection. [DRG 19054]

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

--Elisabeth Vincentelli

4 out of 5 stars Great Update.......2006-03-06

Having already purchased the original cast and film score its interesting to compare the different songs that make up each and the different styles of vocal production. But if you are only going to have one recording this is probably the best as its combines songs & versions from all of the show's performance history. The singing style is much more what an audience in 2006 would expect as well. Traditionalists and purists might not be happy though.

4 out of 5 stars Great "Pal Joey".......2005-08-16

"Pal Joey" is my favorite Rodgers and Hart musical. This Encores! recording is excellent. Peter Gallagher is a wonderful Joey Evens and the supporting cast, including Bebe Newirth is great.
I have not mentioned Patti Lupone yet, however I will now. We all know that you either love or hate Ms. Lupone rarely do people "like" her. I think she has incredible range in her voice, comic timing and acting ability. Then there is her diction. "Evita" was fine, although there were several moments where you couldn't understand her. Tim Rice's simple lyrics were perfect for her. Once she starts singing Cole Porter and Lorenz Hart lyrics, she's gone too far. "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" literally sounds like "Bewitched, baba-ba-ba-wildered am I." Although her voice is wonderful, she must work on her diction.
Otherwise, this recording is wonderful. There are several moments on the 1950 recording I like better ("Take Him") but this is more complete and wonderfully sung.

5 out of 5 stars Joyful Joey.......2004-03-18

I hadn't heard the other recordings of Joey, or even the complete score, but this is great stuff. I wish someone would revive this on Broadway again. Such a great score. A top notch cast of singers, headed by the wonderful Patti Lupone as Vera and Bebe Neuwirth doing Zip! How can you lose? Essential for any Broadway musical lover. I just wish they'd record all the other Rodgers and Hart shows. Many are still waiting to be recorded.

4 out of 5 stars great new recording.......2003-01-04

This recording of PAL JOEY features the amazing cast assembled for the 1995 Encores! concert production. Heading this recording are Patti LuPone as Vera and Peter Gallagher as Joey.

The immortal score by Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart includes "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered", "You Mustn't Kick it Around", "That Terrific Rainbow", "Happy Hunting Horn" and "Take Him".

This recording features Vicki Lewis (most recently seen on Broadway in CHICAGO) as nightclub singer Gladys; and Bebe Neuwirth (CHICAGO) as scene-stealing reporter Melba Snyder who sings the cult-fave song "Zip".

Patti LuPone (LES MISERABLES, SUNSET BOULEVARD) is in fine voice as Vera (the role originally played and monopolized by Vivienne Segal), while Peter Gallagher (GUYS AND DOLLS) gives the right amount of caddish charm to Joey.

The cast also includes Daisy Prince, Lori Werner, Mamie Duncan-Gibbs, Nora Brennan, Lynn Sterling, Georgina Spelvin, Georgette Spelvin, Arthur Rubin and Ned Eisenberg. The Coffee-Club Orchestra is conducted by Rob Fisher.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2002-08-25

What a terrific album! More than sixty years after it was composed by Rodgers and Hart, the score of "Pal Joey" shines as brightly as a new penny. The songs are just great: "I Could Write a Book" and "Bewitched" are of course absolute classics. But it's the less well-known numbers that really knocked me over -- it's literally impossible NOT to tap your feet, drum your fingers, shake your booty . . . or whatever during "Happy Hunting Horn" or "Plant You Now, Dig You Later!" This recording is first rate. That Patti Lupone is wonderful is certainly no surprise, but I have to say that Peter Gallagher's singing talent WAS somewhat surprising -- to me at least. Bebe Neuwirth makes a splash with the witty and wonderful "Zip" (a song about Gypsy Rose Lee). The rest of the cast is less well-known but extremely talented. The original orchestrations were used and they definitely stand the test of time. This is one super album -- and especially if you love the music of Rodgers and Hart!

5 out of 5 stars 5 STARS AND THEN SOME !!.......2006-02-10

Oh Julie, the songs you sang on this CD are superb. I wish you could still give us that joy. If you can only sing in the low registers, give us jazz!! You can do it I just know you can!!

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Sad, .......2005-10-27

Hollywood veteran Julie Andrews has had a glorious career, but not without its downsides. Her legend is built on "The Sound of Music" and "Mary Poppins" and other glorious roles. Her abilities as a singer were never impressive or great, her voice often sounded weak, but she always knew how to sing around her very limited vocal range. On this collection she performs some of the greatest Broadway tunes ever written and even though she does a good job, her voice just doesn't hold up against many of these tunes. Her warmth is felt all over the album, in "Here I'll Stay" she wraps her gentle, but narrow, voice around it and in "My Funny Valentine" she sticks to the lower register of her voice. However, in the re-recording of her classic "Sound of Music" and in "On a Clear Day You Can See Forever" her voice fails her, it often sounds thin and airy and it's actually quite sad to listen to. When all is said and done Julie Andrews remains a great talent, and most of that talent is largely due to her amazing capability as a performer and her genuine warmth.

5 out of 5 stars I FELL IN LOVE WITH JULIE ALL OVER AGAIN.......2005-06-25

As a young kid growing up in the Philippines I remember my Dad playing his state-of-the-art Aiwa tape recorder back in the 60s and hearing Julie Andrews' voice - truly the voice of an angel! Now, hearing these songs again with adult ears I fell in love with her voice all over again !

5 out of 5 stars A Great Julie Andrews CD.......2002-01-27

If you are a fan of Dame Julie's and musicals, this is the cd for you. It is a compilation of songs from prevously released albums; The King and I, The Music of Richard Rodgers, Here I'll Stay, and Victor/Victoria, Original Broadway Cast Recording.
I found the material to be very well put together giving the listener selections from My Fair Lady, Camelot, The Sound of Music, Victor/Victoria and others. What more could you want?
As for Ms. Andrews, she is superb. There is simply no one like her. I have heard comments that prior to the infamous throat surgery she was unable to handle the difficult material and hit those high notes. This is just not true. All you have to do is listen to these songs recorded in the early 90's to know that she still had a marvelous voice. Lets hope that one day she will be able to sing and record again. If not, these may be her last recordings so treasure them.

The My Fair Lady suite is wonderful and Ms. Andrews definitely hit the high note at the end of "I Could Have Danced All Night".
Her version of "Edelweiss" and "The Sound of Music" are lovely.
Also worth listening to is "Living in the Shadows" written for the Broadway production of Victor/Victoria so you won't find it on the movie soundtrack. The lyrics are by Leslie Bricusse who also penned "Crazy World", which is another great selection on this cd.

Overall this is a cd worth having in your collection, so buy it today. Otherwise you are missing out.

5 out of 5 stars Climbing Every Mountain with Mary Poppins.......2002-01-22

Julie Andrews and her music have been an inspiration to me
every since I stepped into a theater and watched Mary Poppins
(many years ago). I admire her talent and her voice on this CD. I know it is not as clear a voice as she used to have but I still enjoy listening to her. I listen to this CD when I want a "pick me up" and am proud to have it as part of my collection.

      4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

      1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

      5 out of 5 stars Truncated.......2007-02-19

I have only one objection to this album. She sings only 2 choruses of "To Keep My Love Alive" while the orchestra keeps playing the music over and over. A lyric like that, and they play just the music! There was plenty of time to put the whole lyric in. "If I Were You" (an imitated idea, most notably to my mind by Adams & Strouse in "All American") is a knock-out, and on this one she sings both verses (there is only one chorus). Highly recommended (if you can find it) anyway. "To Keep..." can be heard in it's entirety on other recordings, like on the revival cast recording of "Connecticut Yankee" by Vivienne Segal (on 2 releases!). Now if someone would just record the complete lyrics of "Mt. Greenery" and "Manhattan" - for a change!

      5 out of 5 stars a hidden classic.......2006-10-07

Von Stade is in very fine voice on this CD, and her rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is one of the best ever, with a rich, expressive delivery. Her voice has sometimes been considered too operatic for pop material but on this she's just right. Other standouts are "Moon Of My Delight" and the playful "To Keep My Love Alive" but the whole album is solid.

      5 out of 5 stars Wonderful record.......2002-11-11

A wonderful record !! Mrs. Von Stade's voice is perfect. I also raccomend this recond because all the arrengments are recreations from the original shows.

      5 out of 5 stars exquisite album.......2000-11-10

Contained in this CD are some of the most beautiful versions of the great timeless songs of Rogers and Hart. Coductor John McGlinn's orchestrations are flawless, as are Frederica's vocals. My favorites are 'I Didn't Know What Time It Was', 'My Funny Valentine', 'Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered', 'Atlantic Blues' and 'A Ship Without a Sail'. Every song is well done and everyone I have turned on to this album loves it.

      5 out of 5 stars Classic R&H.......2007-06-26

And by "H" I mean HART! Every music theatre person should be familiar with this show, and this recording is well worth having.

4 out of 5 stars Very good version of a very good show.......2006-07-31

Maybe I shouldn't be writing this review just yet, as although I've heard other versions of Pal Joey, I've not heard any except this one in a long time, so I can't compare and contrast versions to recommend one over another very well. I did see the film again not too long ago, and believe that I preferred those versions of these songs, but I'd have to hear it again, and as far as I know, the film soundtrack isn't available on CD, anyway. At any rate, no matter how good other versions are, this one is good, too, so it's worth picking up if you're a fan of this music, or older Broadway music in general.

      Track 1, "Overture" 4/5
This is your standard Broadway overture. There's nothing particularly unusual about it, but it's certainly competent with a couple interesting rearrangements of the songs that will follow.

Track 2, "You Mustn't Kick It Around" 4/5
Harold Lang, who sings the part of Joey on this "studio cast" recording, has a very pleasant, "clean" tenor voice. This is not one of Rodgers and Hart's best melodies in the show, especially as a couple of them are masterpieces, but it's nice enough, and the arrangement/orchestration of the verses is very unusual and effective with the "start/stop" chords. The instrumental bridge features impressive horn ensemble work.

      Track 3, "I Could Write a Book" 5/5
One of the masterpieces from the show. It's a gorgeous, serpentine melody. This is a song that has deservedly become a jazz standard. The arrangement here is very mellow, heavy on strings and woodwinds, with a bridge sung by Beverly Fite that's almost classical. The second time through the principal melody, also sung by Fite, the arrangement retains some of those traditional classical nuances. Very nice, and very different from the typical jazz standard way of approaching the song.

Track 4, "That Terrific Rainbow" 3/5
This is a bawdy, burlesque number. The intro is played with a lot of appropriate near-overblowing by the horn section, and there's a nice clarinet solo weaving its way through the changes. Barbara Ashley takes the vocal with a very campy delivery. It fits the song. The main flaw here is that this type of material was already fairly clichéd in the early 50s. Although it's competently done here, I would have preferred some artistic stretching from Rodgers and Hart.

      Track 5, "What is a Man?" 4/5
There are a number of very unusual, subtle-but-hip harmonic changes in this song, which also has a nice melody. The harmonic changes often suggest key or modality changes without actually being key or modality changes. The bridge takes a brief stylistic left turn that works for the show dramatically.

Track 6, "Happy Hunting Horn" 5/5
Lots of interesting stylistic and rhythmic changes throughout this song. It has a catchy, bouncing groove overall, and also a very catchy melody that quotes from/modifies a couple different folk/traditional melodies, including traditional hunting horn and bugling melodies, appropriately enough.

Track 7, "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" 5/5
The other masterpiece from this show, and my personal favorite. In fact, it's one of my favorite songs of all time, and also a jazz standard that I love playing. The principal melody employs one of my favorite devices--a kind of ostinato with changing harmonies beneath it. Like "I Could Write A Book", this has a lush string arrangement, with some nicely contrasting muted brass parts, that fits well with the show overall. Vivienne Segal approaches the vocal almost operatically.

Track 8, "Pal Joey (What Do I Care for a Dame?)" 5/5
An intriguing melody in that the verses consist of a single note repeated for four bars before rising chromatically with another repeated note for the next four bars, then suggesting it's going to do it a third time before resolving into a more standard melody. The second verse repeats the theme, but with higher pitches, reflecting the structure more broadly. This is a very catchy song, well arranged. The instrumental bridge is especially impressive, with some very modern sounding orchestration and harmonies--almost Stravinskian at times. The coda features a beautifully and bombastically orchestrated reprise of "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered".

      Track 9, "Zip" 4/5
Speaking of Stravinsky, there's a reference to him in the lyrics to this song, with a very funny orchestral blast right after his name. This is the primary novelty number of the show. It's fairly traditional as that, but there are a couple wonderful outside pitches--again inserted pretty subtly--in the melody. Nicely orchestrated. The singing, this time by Jo Hurt, is campy again, as it should be.

Track 10, "Plant You Now, Dig You Later" 3/5
The second low point. It's not a bad song, but it's fairly generic.

Track 11, "(In Our Little) Den of Iniquity" 4/5
If anything could be called "Broadway Opera", this song would fit that description perfectly. There's nothing particularly unusual happening musically, but it's an attractive song, nicely arranged and performed.

Track 12, "Do It the Hard Way" 4/5
The beginning of the phrases on the chorus are very unusual rhythmically, especially given the arrangement, and pleasant melodically. A nice song, overall.

      Track 13, "Take Him" 3.5/5
Very traditional, but competent. Maybe a trifle overlong.

      Track 14, "Finale" 5/5
The two best songs, "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" and "I Could Write a Book" are reprised again and combined in maybe the best arrangements of them in this version of Pal Joey. A beautiful ending to a very good show.

3 out of 5 stars Bad blurb for the album`.......2005-11-06

You state: "However, cast recordings were not a regular practice in the 1950's. Columbia Producer Goddard Lieberson rectified this 10 years later...NO! You must have meant in the 1940's. I saw PAL JOEY about a dozen times in 1952. I had two friends in the cast Lionel Stander and Beverly Bozeman (who took over the part of Gladys Bumps). I have the cd of this and many of the songs are not in order or left out. Check the CD again! Did Jane Frohman really sing the part of Vera on disc?

      4 out of 5 stars Jane Froman.......2005-08-12

I love Jane Froman in the lead. She had such a glorious voice and knew how to use it. This cast is available with the With A Song in My Heart album for anyone who is interested.

3 out of 5 stars Leave it to Jane!.......2004-06-10

Sorry gang but I can not possibly disagree more with the majority view. I greatly prefer the Jane Froman/Dick Beavers "Pal Joey" (ASIN B00000DR94, sadly, mostly out of print CD) to the Vivienne Segal. Jane had a most beautiful voice. She sings 'What Is a Man?' and 'Bewitched...' with just the right combination of yearning and cynicism. Vivienne was the original 'Vera' but who cares? Her deep basso has, trust me, turned off many theatre
addicts to "Pal Joey" entirely. The neutered '57 film is NOT to be hated; it has helped to keep the "real" play alive. Thanx, H

5 out of 5 stars great singers, great songs.......2006-05-03

Some of broadway's best singers are on this album, including Brian Stokes Mitchell, Debbie Gravitte, Marin Mazzie, and Rebecca Luker. (The cd is worth buying for Rebecca Luker's song alone!) The songs are beautifully orchestrated and sung. Most are light hearted and fun, leaving me with a good feeling when listening.
If you're a fan of broadway showtunes, I believe you'll enjoy this album.
