What did I expect, anyway?.......2004-01-11

Although the concert band in Ann Arbor puts in a yoeman-like performance, the arrangements are just awful. UM's band always seems to fumble the ball when it comes to arranging the fight songs of other teams in the Big T(elev)en, and that tendency shows through on this album. At least the concert band doesn't "jump-march" during their performance, so there isn't that annoying drop in tone, tenor and constancy every two beats, like there is at live performances.
With any luck, maybe Ohio State - the nation's best band - will put out a comparable CD. Once they play even an opposing team's fight song, they own it.

What the?!.......2004-01-10

As a member of a Big Ten marching band, I have had the good fortune to watch most of these groups perform live on the field on Saturday afternoons. These recordings would sound more at place on the soundtrack to the Nutcracker. There is great musicianship as would be expected from a Big Ten band, but these are not the legendary fight songs that I thought I was purchasing. Does anyone know of a compiliation of the Saturday versions of these great songs?

A Real "Rouser".......2002-02-14

Excellent symphonic band arrangements of some great favorites. These college kids are remarkable players. My only criticism is that some of the arrangements seem to make these marches into Broadway showstoppers and take excessive liberties with the original scores. Good audio quality for a recording made at the beginning of the digital era.

The Best Marches.......2000-10-30

I bought this record when it first came out. My father and I used to listen to it on the way to Football games. The songs are performed by U of M's concert band, not their marching band, so the sound is even more incredible. If you ever hear commercials with fight songs in the background, this is their source!! My record is long been scratched so now I'm getting it on CD. Best when listened to on saturday mornings.

Terrible arrangements.......2000-09-29

UM is certainly one of the finest marching bands in the nation; but these arangements are just awful. The rendition for On Brave Old Army Team sounds like something conjured up for the soundtrack of a bad war movie. This would be a great CD if they just played them straight.

I have been listening to this album on vinyl since 1978, the year it was released. I was very happy to find it remastered and available on CD. '78 was a turning point for me (who cares? Yeah,I know) - but I turned 21, discovered Bob James, Tim Weisberg (Night Rider, Hurtwood Edge), Earl Klugh (Magic in Your Eyes), John Klemmer (Touch, Barefoot Ballet)followed over the next few short years by Michael Franks, Lee Ritenour, Al Jarreau, Pat Metheny Group and Dire Straits and Mark Knopfler (Sultans of Swing!).
I guess Bob James' music, like the music of the incredibly talented musician/vocalist/composers (other than Knopfler and Metheny - both incredible masters of their instruments and craft) I have noted, could now fall into the maligned category of "smooth jazz". I don't care! I know what I like and this album of Bob James is superb. I never tire of listening to it and if you are not influenced by labels, but by the purity of simply good music and skilled musicians, then neither will you.
With this album, as Pat Metheny did with "First Circle", Bob James created a masterpiece. Enjoy it! And also check out "Rain" on his "Obsession" album and "Far from Turtle" on his "Grand Piano Canyon" album. They are also masterpieces.

The first BJ album I bought in the 80's.......2006-09-24

This is a must have in your Bob James collection. I still have the original vinyl as well. I keep playing this album over and over again after owning it for I guess about 25 years now.
Great to notice that BJ never left his origins and still knows how to renew the sound. In my opinion one of the best and most consistent smooth jazz musician ever!

Another gem by Bob James........2006-02-28

This is the first Bob James I ever heard and that was in 1980.
I love this album and is 1 of my 2 favourites.This is another beautiful album,one of his best.Also,I recommend "One on One" and the album "Restoration:The best of Bob James".

Bob scores with Touchdown!.......2005-01-28

Ahhh, the late 1970s with it's breezy multi-cultured sound. This album is Bob James' sixth album, understandably called "touchdown" (six points). This album was released at the end of 1978 and was Bob's second album on the tappan zee label (He had been on Creed Taylor's CTI records for his first four albums). I think this is one of Bob's best. It's opening track: "Angela" was originally the theme of the TV series "Taxi". The version on this album is longer and more progressive that the TV version. The title track is somewhat similar to the sounds of Maynard Ferguson or Bill Conti. The strong rhythm sounds like an action adventure. My favourite song on the album is the latin flavored "I Want to thank you very much" (which originally closed side one). Bob's tender fender rhodes playing on "Thank You" have ranked this album one of my all-time favourites in jazz: and i've been a jazz fan since 1979. Along with "Lucky Seven", I think this is Bob James' best work. I think true jazz fans should add this CD to their collection.

Defines the very sound of smooth jazz.......2004-12-31

For those that are into the smooth jazz or fusion, funk, contemporary, jazz-rap genre should own this album. This could be 3rd or 4th album I purchased from Bob James on LP. I originally own The Genie (1st album I listen to), Heads, and Bj4.
'Bout to get into H, Double Vision, One, Two and Three a lil bit.

Songs incl. I loved: Angela (Theme from Taxi), Touchdown, and my favorite easy-listening track of all-time I Want to Thank You (Very Much) (Brings me back good memories).

An excellent must-have.

Beatifully produced, with great solos from an all-star cast. Apart from Eric Gale's classic solo on Angela, there are some really tasteful melodic lines from Bob on Fender Rhodes and Acoustic Piano and Dave Sanborn's playing on Touchdown is excellence bar none. Earl Klugh and Hubert Laws complement each other perfectly on Carribean nights and Steve Gadd powers the band on in a subtle understated manner. All in all Touchdown is a lovely recording. I listened to it today back to back with Bob James' 1975 offering "Two" yet another classic from the Seventies. It's good to treat oneself now and again. I'll say it again, beautiful!!!! I'm not the biggest fan of so-called smooth Jazz but this album is something special. Musicians could learn a lot from "touchdown".

I love this album and i really love eric gale on guitar; what a sweet sound. jazz lost one of its greats when he died in my opinion. enjoy!
