Twentysomething

English singer-pianist Jamie Cullum comes into view as an already heralded jazz-pop artist, signed to a million-pound contract and riding a CD that's already registered double platinum in the UK. The "jazz" label doesn't hang that comfortably on the 24-year-old Cullum--he's more in the mold of polished lounge swingers like Bobby Darin and Buddy Greco and has more in common with, say, Billy Joel (definitely a "New York State of Mind") than any traditional jazz artist you might mention. An ironist who covers both Cole Porter and Radiohead, he's aware of the contradictions that he embodies. Those contradictions drive the title track as Cullum's lyrics plumb "twentysomething" uncertainties ("Maybe move back home and pay off my loans/Working nine to five answering phones") while moving to a mock-primitive chanted riff that's pure '50s hip. What surprises most is Cullum's emotional and musical range, and the way he combines methods to create depth and complexity. "Blame it on My Youth" is delivered with the heartfelt delicacy of Chet Baker, while his reading of "The Wind Cries Mary" suggests that Jimi Hendrix might have just about invented smooth jazz. "I Could Have Danced All Night" explodes with playful energy and creativity, launched with scat singing over a rhythm pounded out on drums and piano wood. Cullum has energy and talent to burn, plus a postmodern knack for layering idioms that signals a welcome direction for jazz-pop. As "Lover, You Should've Come Over" attests, he can also project an emotional intensity that breaks through the clever arrangements. --Stuart Broomer

...how wonderful this album is. I love it and have been listening to it often since I received it 2 days ago! Fun, original, get-your-feet-tapping jazzy tunes. Jamie Cullum enjoys doing what he does and it comes through the music. His energy is contagious! Definitely a must-see if he were ever to come to this part of the world.

5 out of 5 stars A male version of Diana Krall.......2007-01-14

I guess the review's title says everything. Jamie Cullum is a wonderful artist, he combines jazz, rock and pop in a perfect manner. His performance playing the keyboards is excellent and his distinct voice is the last element of his success.
Great CD.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD.......2007-03-27

First realy heard of this guy when I saw him on the music of black origin awards where he thanked all the black musicians who had came before him. I thought to myself "Now here is both an intelligent and decent musician" I then heard him play his rendition of 'everlasting love' Now I am not one for corny old tunes but the energy he put into the song even had the audience on their feet.

I hear there are different editions of this CD some missing 'high and dry' and a couple of others which is a great pity. This is a realy nice CD to sit back and listen to after a hard day (or even in the car on the way home from a hard day) it will certainly save you from coming home and kicking the cat (they cat will definatly appriciate it)

Sit back in that quiet room of your house, grab yourself a drink and put on this CD. Trust me, you wont regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Twentysomething...wonderful something!!!.......2006-08-30

I had a bad quality copy of Jamie Cullum's Twentysomething that I had fallen in love with, and shared with my family and friends; and they fell in love with it too! After seeing him in concert in my town, and finding out that there was actually a special edition of this cd; I rushed onto Amazon and bought it. I absolutely love it! It's much better quality than the one I had, and showcases Jamie's amazing talent. Many of the songs he arranged himself, which I think is rather impressive since he was so young (bear in mind though, that I am no music expert). And a few of the songs on the album are written by him, too. He does some more classic songs as well, and even manages and cover of Jimi Hendrix and Radiohead. All in all, this is one of the best cd's that I own, and I will continue to wear it out in my player for years to come!

5 out of 5 stars I think I'm in Love.......2005-03-23

Oh my God. This album is just fantastic! I didn't like jazz music, until now.
The lyrics are beautiful, and a kid that cute playing the piano it's so sexy. I can't wait to hear more of this talented artist.

Album Description

On Twentysomething, Jamie celebrates jazz and retrofits standards to accommodate elements of the music he grew up with, from rock to rap to drum & bass. Just as gracefully, he recasts the works of contemporary luminaries like Radiohead and Jeff Buckley with a harmonic vocabulary he learned picking through old Gershwin tunes. But this young upstart has drawn raves as more than just an interpreter with a slate of originals, both by Jamie and his older brother, Ben, that draw upon, and reflect, the experiences of his own generation. It is Jamie's forte as a writer - not just a singer and performer - of songs that has garnered his latest kudos, prompting MOJO magazine to note in its four-star review of twentysomething that "the ace up Cullum's sleeve is the original writing," as showcased on sophisticated pop gems like the wistful first single, "All At Sea" and the driving "twentysomething."

The disc's title tune sprang from having dinner and drinks with some old friends from university, all of whom seemed to be floundering with the same questions of how to weather their quarter-life crises. "When I woke up the next morning, I had this idea to write a song about people my age, twentysomethings, not knowing their place in the world, or where to go, and how education doesn't really prepare them for that." He took a string introduction he'd been working on for another song, sped up the tempo, and the melody for "twentysomething" was conceived.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing fascinating..........2004-07-19

I wasn't really satisfied, to be honest. People seem to be attracted to the smooth jazz background and unique singing voice that Jamie has, but some of the selections...Granted, the tracks are well played, but "Singin' In The Rain"? It seems like a joke. And his originals aren't much out of the "look what i can do" range. Call me ignorant, but it's just not up to par with some of the greater musical talents that are offerec today. There's nothing overly fascinating here that you couldn't get from any of today's other alt-pop chart toppers. Keep working on that...music thing, Jamie.

5 out of 5 stars Jamie Cullum; musician+singer+songwriter+innovator!.......2004-06-25

When it comes to the music industry, every week there are several new artists that we are introduced to that deserve our attention, and Jamie Cullum is at the head of the list. With his newest release "Twentysomething", Jamie has managed to burst onto the scene in a big way. It isn't often that a new artist can follow-up a very successful debut album with an even more popular second album, but Jamie Cullum has managed to do just that.

This album is a tasty mix of excellent new material combined with classic tunes from the past to create a very interesting and enjoyable listening experience. Jamie handles all this different material with an original style that captures the listener's attention without wearing them out. Through brilliant innovation and a truly unique approach to his music, Jamie exposes the listener to a whole new landscape of musical textures, colors, and emotions that challenge and satisfy at the same time. Since his "Pointless Nostalgic" album, it is obvious that Jamie has matured into a vital musical force that will be a major player in the world of jazz and pop for many years to come. I can't wait for his next release.

If you enjoy listening to crooners and Big Band Swing, I would also suggest Monte Procopio "Swingin' With Style" CD. His 13-piece band really swings and deserves a listen.

4 out of 5 stars No Frontin'.......2006-04-11

I have known about Jamie Cullum for some time now but just never paid attention to his music. Then someone recommended that I listen to Twentysomething. Boy sometimes i am so slow....

Soemtimes when you hear the first song on a CD, it helps you decide whether you will like the entire album or not. Well "These Are The Days" made me fall in love with the CD and even if every other song on the album was bad, I would still love it. The album just hit the right cord with me.

This album is brilliant. I have now been enrolled in the School of Jamie Cullum. Never to graduate.

The Radiohead and Pharrel covers are brilliant but i just can't get over how great a track "These are the days" is....It wins hands down.

BUY BUY BUY. Do it without hesitation

5 out of 5 stars Newest Jazz Star.......2005-04-21

I just recently discovered Jamie when I saw him on PBS performing at the Newport Jazz Fest. I was so impressed after sampling a few of his tracks I downloaded(legally) the whole album. It was well worth it. This guy is great. You can really tell jazz is really what he was weened on musically. But you can also tell he is a Y-gen. The other commentor said he was like a male british Diana Krull. I describe him as a cross between Harry Connick, Jr. and Brian Setzer. (Harry did his first album, Sountrack to When Harry Met Sally, at 19 and followed up with Twenty when he was 20).

Anyway- Buy this album now- do not hesitate! Support this artist. I want to have more of his albums. Put it in your shopping cart so you don't forget.

Sean-Michael

5 out of 5 stars Very much worth a listen.......2005-01-29

Jamie Cullum could be called a British, male Diana Krall. His style is similar to Diana's, but he takes jazz and adds a pop perspective to it. And for someone so young, this is a venture few would undertake. I think the only exception was Harry Connick, Jr., who was, I think, only 23 when he released his first album. Listening to the opening cut. "These Are the Days", the mood is set for the album. I couldn't turn it off. "Twentysomething" sounds a bit autobiographical. And I played his rendition of "I Get a Kick Out of You" several times; one of the best I've heard. The Dual Disc format was perfect for this album. I listened to the DVD side in full DVD-Audio. The surround mix isexcellent. I'm one of these people who prefers a good surround mix to flat, two-dimensional stereo, and I was not disappointed. In addition to the highresolution audio track, a Dolby Digital surround track is included, as is high resolution stereo. There are also two music videos and a preview of his concert DVD at Blenheim Castle. The CD side of the disc is also very good, but if you have the option to listen to the DVD side in 5.1 surround, do it. You'll be drawn in both by the great sound and Jamie's boyish charm.

When it comes to the music industry, there are artists popping up daily it seems, but none of the new artists excite me as much as Jamie Cullum. With his newest release "Twentysomething", Jamie has managed to burst onto the scene in a big way. It isn't often that a new artist can follow-up a very successful debut album with an even more popular second album, but Jamie Cullum has managed to do just that.

If you enjoy listening to crooners and Big Band Swing, I would also recommend, Monte Procopio "Swingin' With Style" CD. He is a contemporary crooner that can really swing and deserves a listen. Buy both these CDs, you can't go wrong!

I was recently on holiday in London and saw a commercial advertising the Twentysomething CD. The next day while touring around I bought it...what an awesome find! This CD is great! You should definitely add it to your collection.

I echo the high marks for this CD. Its evocative of AJ Croce's piano popjazz. But don't pay Amazon's list price of $41 or its "discount" at $26. I picked it up at a local music store for $7.98

      5 out of 5 stars Amazing...........2004-05-04

Let me tell you, I bought this CD few months ago in England (I am from Italy) just listening to it in a music store and soon felt in love with it. It is somehting new to me, a mix of jazz and new wave sound. Some covers and some stuffs of his own! incredible for being only 23.
Then, 2 weeks ago he came to play live in Rome. I went to see him and I was so pleasantly surpirsed for the way he plays live. Much better live than in studio! He plays the piano with aggressive talent! and plays evry song in such a good way. This musician comes directly to my heart when playng! At the end of the concert the 70 people stood up for a standing ovation! well done Jamie.
      Waiting for your next work!!!

5 out of 5 stars Jamie Cullum is a musical force to be reckoned with........2004-06-19

This album is a tasty mix of excellent new material combined with classic tunes from the past to create a very interesting and enjoyable listening experience. Jamie handles all this different material with an original style that captures the listener's attention without wearing them out. Since his "Pointless Nostalgic" album, it is obvious that Jamie has matured into a vital musical force that will be a major player in the world of jazz and pop for many years to come. I am looking forward to his next effort.

If you enjoy listening to crooners and Big Band Swing, I would also recommend, Monte Procopio "Swingin' With Style" CD. He is a contemporary crooner that can really swing and deserves a listen. Buy both these CDs, you can't go wrong!
