Sophomore slump? Not for Tierney Sutton. After a memorable debut in Unsung Heroes, the willowy singer of elegant purr and urgent phrasing focuses on an even more intensely personal project--singing a well-paced set of 14 songs, all but one written by or associated with legendary pianist Bill Evans. Tierney maneuvers her hand-in-glove trio (no guest horns) through Evans's ineffable book, and comes up with a date that's perfectly relaxed and fitting. She sidles through quiet moments and breezy bits, engineers tempo shifts, applies gentle gestures, and edgily improvises. Instrumentals like "Very Early" and "We Will Meet Again" earn fresh lyrics from Sutton and others, yet Tierney manages to evoke Evans's disquieting genius at each turn of phrase, as pianist Christian Jacob, himself cut of Evans-esque velvet, counters with arching, heartfelt lines, sometimes eerily evocative of the master. Each tune sets a unique internal pulse, a rhythmic point-of-view that invests the arrangement with individuality--fleet dotted-eighths on "Autumn Leaves," a tentative ostinato on Miles Davis's "Blue in Green," a slinking "You and the Night and the Music"--all obliquely recalling Evans own inimitable, unmistakable phrasing. Knowing touches include inviting in Evans's last drummer, Joe LaBarbera, to airbrush "Waltz for Debby/Tiffany," overdubbing harmony and adding a bass on "Sometime Ago," and daring to air back-to-back ballads, as Evans often did. As tributes go, she's mined pure gold. --Fred Bouchard

Soundtracks are a mixed bag at best. Some are little more than an assortment of pieces, but others hang together effectively on their own, like this one. The idea of Chinese music--both popular and operatic--juxtaposed with the sounds of Nat King Cole performing Latin music might seem bizarre, but it works beautifully, sustaining a lush, romantic mood created both by the strings and the '40s Chinese music, itself a tinkling Hollywood pastiche. But as atmospheric as all this is, one track stands out above the others: "Blue," actually a version of the classic "St. James' Infirmary," takes on another dimension in Chinese hands. While familiar but completely alien at the same time, the slithering Asian sonorities mesh perfectly with the African-American form to create something evocative but with a sadness that goes beyond blues. The movie is of a time and place; the soundtrack is of a mood and yearning. Listen at night, with someone you love close by. --Chris Nickson
Customer Reviews:
Awsome Instrumental Music.......2007-03-09
The soundtrack is really good; I didn't like some of the songs (the Chinese ones) but there are only 3 in the whole CD. The instrumental music is awesome making the soundtrack an average good.
The Bing Crosby songs are very good but...........2006-07-17
In my opinion it`s the Bing Crosby-songs that makes this album worth buying, but these songs can be bought on compilations. The rest of the music is for people with special interest for backgroundmusic in films.
AMAZING! Hauntingly beautiful..........2006-05-09
So beautiful and emotional, it makes you want to cry! The score for the film and the collection of music together is absolutely breathtaking....
A great soundtrack for a lover of WKW films.......2006-03-22
I loved the film, so I love the soundtrack, which brings back memories of the film. WKW uses period music to evoke the emotions and feel of the time period of the film.
as gorgeous as the film!.......2006-02-11
Film soundtracks are often disappointing---there are songs from the movie that are not on the CD, songs on the CD that were not in the film, different versions of songs on the CD than in the film, etc.
Happily, this soundtrack is absolutely faithful to the film, and it is masterfully interwoven with dialogue excerpts from the film which complement and build on the music instead of being obtrusive. I don't understand a word of Chinese but still enjoyed listening to the actors' voices, and also liked the bits of traditional Chinese music as well. There are some tracks that I don't remember from the film but they are not throw-away filler in any way, just beautiful extras in the same vein.

Customer Reviews:
not to great.......2007-04-04
We were disappointed with this CD, but for the price I guess we can't expect much. I didn't care for the new style presentation of the songs. I like a more traditional rendering.
Not so bad, 100 tunes for 4$.......2005-06-22
I red the comments of two other people who have bought this 4 CD BOX SET and it is not really so bad. I will even add that there are some excellent tunes. However, I must agree with the fact that few tunes seem to have been recorded 40 or 50 years ago, mainly when you hear the scratches of an old turntable but it is just 2 or 3 tunes. Furthermore, if you do not know American music, it is a good BOX SET to buy if you consider that you received 4 CD for 4$ including 100 tunes. On these 4 CD, I have heard some orchestration that I have never heard before and I consider that they are different but interesting. Any way, after hearing these 100 tunes, you will say to yourself that you like this tune, this other tune, this other tune and so on and you will be able to buy a more expensive CD with the tunes that you like. However, I have bought many CDs in the last few weeks and as you know, there are always some tunes that you like and some tunes that you do not like on every CD that you will buy. So, don't buy it at 25$ but at 4 or 5$ dollars, it is a very good choice for 100 tunes.
You get what you pay for........2004-07-04
You get what you pay for. The singers put their own spin on the singing of each song. If you didn't hear the words you would not recognize some of them. Even some of the music sounds like a bad recording of music played on a turntable. Definitely not worth the price.
Now I know why there were no song samples to listen to ..........2004-07-04
I wish this review had been here when I was thinking of purchasing it. I guess you get what you pay for. If you are thinking of buying this, you are better off recording your own CDs (or at least buying one that you can listen to a sampling of the songs). This album includes songs that were mere recordings of the songs playing on an old record player. It's almost so unbelievable that it is funny.

Customer Reviews:
Where angels fear to tread.......2006-01-23
Like Karrin Allyson's tribute album to John Coltrane, Tierney Sutton's tribute to Bill Evans places extra demands on the listener. Both albums offer ample testimony that the state of jazz singing in the post-Ella-Sarah-Carmen age is indeed well. But both recordings also force the listener to try to forego comparisons with their respective muses.
With the exception of several of Bill's original compositions, I hear nothing on this album that would in itself remind me of his music ("Just Squeeze Me"?!). Coltrane's was a vatic and Bill's an aesthetic muse, but both artists had in common a search for rapture that produced music of unrelenting urgency and passion, of tensions and energies that act as a vortex pulling the listener into a world of profound and frightening beauty. Compare the '61 Vanguard Sessions with the '80 Vanguard Sessions (or anything from Evans' remarkable final year), and you become aware of impressionistic colors ultimately giving place to a dark and tragic dimension in Bill's utterly unique, unprecedented, even "threatening" hold on the listener's psyche.
I'm not sure why Tierney would want to summon up this world because her own offers sufficient rewards of its own. I suspect her pianist doesn't appreciate the comparison, because nowhere does he capture Bill's complex musical energy and ineffable touch. Disassociate this music from the precursor's (it took me a while to be able to do so), and it no longer pales in comparison. The languour and glibness are lifted, and the music takes on a serene life of its own. Moreover, there isn't a bad tune let alone a rough moment on the session (Bill, on the other hand, had a few). Like some of the previous reviewers, I notice the recurrent hints of nasality in Tierney's voice but find it personal, a bit sexy and, more importantly, musical (it enables her to close off vowels more quickly and speed up articulations).
All told, this is of the same high order as Tierney's other recordings, so let repertory be your guide. (I'm still partial to "Dancing in the Dark.")
Nice but Nasal.......2005-05-14
I also dislike the nasal quality of Ms. Sutton's voice on this CD and find it distracting. It's the reason I play it less than I'd like. On the other hand, I think she has amazing talent. I love the different renditions of standards, the clarity and perfect notes, the varied selections and style. A beautiful voice with great potential. In spite of the negative, I'm still glad I have this CD.
Disappointing.......2005-04-28
This CD, a tribute to pianist Bill Evans, leaves me cold. The arrangements are excellent and the backup trio really move through the music. The problem is Sutton, who just doesn't swing. When she wants to be edgy, she adopts an annoying nasal voice. The rest of her vocal tics sound equally mannered. Too bad, as the positive reviews had left me hoping for better.
Tierney Sutton IS Music.......2004-08-04
My admiration for this lady grows album by album (or disc by disc if you will). As she states in the notes, it is NOT simply a singler plus a band but an integration of musicians, each excelling at what he or she does best. In fact, playing as individuals lends a better, deeper, more satisfying sound.
And that sound is pure professionalism - no slurred words, chaotic drums, random bass chords or meandering searching over the keys. The arrangements themselves are matched only by the voice which can only be described as magnificent. I really liked the choice of songs.
Ms. Sutton's artistic niche is reinterpreting the works of others - whether it is once wordless melodies ("Unsung Heroes"), Frank Sinatra ("Dancing in the Dark") or Bill Evans (this work). Each and every venture is a work of genius and by that I mean true genius. OK, what stands out on this one? "Turn Out the Lights" is pure emotion, dripping with sensuality. The version of "Autumn Leaves" with its sonata-like movements was just sensational. "Just You Just Me" is a duet with drummer Ray Brinker - a tour de force. He is a major player in "Old Devil Moon." "You the Night and Music" is a mysterious, captivating work that totally succeeds. I could go on about each and every selection but suffice it is to say that this is one recording I almost order you to purchase...Now...As Soon as Possible.
Smart and Sweet .......2004-07-31
There are so many treats in this album, it's hard to know where to start. Vocalist Tierney Sutton has navigated some challenging material here, all of it associated with or composed by Bill Evans, and though it's a bona fide vocal success, it is as much a small-group arranging triumph as anything else. The ensemble on "Blue in Green" is the emphasis, and the interaction between Tierney and her trio works beautifully. Ms. Sutton doesn't just lay down the melody and then disappear for solos; she often weaves in and out, often taking a half-chorus here and there, inventing melodies herself, while always seeming cognizant of the group sound. She possesses a rich, sensual alto sweetness, yet is never coy or cute. Her genuine musicianship is evident throughout. As she explains to writer Bob Blumenthal in the liner notes: "Bill Evans was huge in my development. The thing that Bill gave me was the idea that jazz didn't have to be loud; it could be swinging, sensual an beautiful without overblown drama. He let me know that there a place for me in jazz, that I could use my voice in this manner. He had introduced something new and fresh -- that bittersweet, harmonic sense of his, never too sweet, with that undercurrent of tragedy."
I especially loved hearing "Very Early" introduced very slow with just piano -- we hear clearly the structure, and that beautiful lilting Evans melody. Christian Jacob then takes the solo in four, instead of the original 3/4 time, and we're treated to a rich tapestry of colors and a stellar understanding of the complex chord movement of one of Bill's compositions.
His tune "Turn Out The Stars" is a challenging task indeed to sing, due to its extreme changes of key centers, and its wide leaps in melody -- and it gets a similar reading. Doing it just once through was a brilliant choice -- as a composition it is so full of its own inherent inventiveness and its stands alone. And Ms. Sutton makes it all sounds so easy, which it's not. She gets deep enough inside it, but doesn't resort to any overwrought interpretation.
"We Will Meet Again" is reverently and poignantly done -- and what a profound added lyric! Piano and bass weave a nice counterpoint through the opening of the melancholy melody (which Bill wrote for his brother Harry, after the latter's passing). Teirney may have made the definitive vocal version of this lovely piece. Surely any future performance will have to be compared to this one. It's sincere and heartfelt and bears repeated listenings. The uplifting ending adds a genuine moment of hopefulness, and a fitting one to this otherwise sad and wistful tune.
Trey Brinker on bass and Ray Brinker on drums deserve mention as well. They are tight together and provide great support, and their presence is always felt. They worked with Mr. Jacobs a while, (in Jack Sheldon's big band out in California) and it shows. They light up the proceedings in unexpected ways and the interplay is simply refreshing and never obtrusive. Their musical comraderie is a treat all by itself.
Tierney Sutton has made an outstanding CD of material that, due to its musical intricacies and its any choices of presentation could have easily fallen flat. That it shines in such graceful and clever ways and with such moving lyricism, and this trio's innate musicality behind her sweet voice is a true tribute to all that Bill Evans' music exemplified. VERY highly recommended!

Mrs Henderson Presents.......2007-05-16
A very enjoyable and at times funny movie. Judi Dench gives one of her best perfomances with excellent support from the other cast members. This is a movie one could watch several times and never tire of it. AAA+++
Absolutely infectious!!!.......2007-03-28
From start to finish, MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS is the finest collection of solid standards and George Fenton's own recreated time-period evocations, fully fleshed and skillfully performed and recorded. The talents of singer Will Young will not go unnoticed, especially in his heartbreaking rendition of ALL THE THINGS YOU ARE.Your toes will be tapping, your lips will be smiling and you will be glad that this soundtrack and wonderful film are yours! You will be transported to WW2 England and you will be humming these tunes day and night.
A Creation and Recreation of Nostalgia.......2006-04-23
George Fenton has put together a musical score for the completely delightful MRS. HENDERSON PRESENTS that is a combination of original music deeply influenced by the time of the film (London during WW II) and some of the best 'old favorite songs' from that time. In the film the music is always present, whether in the performances on the Windmill Theater stage or in the lyricism of the acting by Judi Dench, Bob Hoskins and crew.
Fenton includes such terrific oldies as Johnny Mercer's 'Goody Goody', Charles Harris' 'After the Ball', Noel Gay's 'Letting in the Sunshine', Frank Loesser's 'Blue Nightfall', and Jerome Kern's 'All the things you are'. He segues these pieces with his own fine orchestrations and the result is a score that not only enhances the mood of the film, but one that stands alone as a recording. The various performers include Camille O'Sullivan, Charlene Ford, Ciaran Connolly, Elise Audeyev, Frances Garvey, Frank Lawson, Joseph McMurray, Kate Power, Matthew Hart, Melody Squire, Rachel Lawrence, Sir Thomas Allen!, Sophie Brown, The O'Brien Sisters, Vanessa Barmby, Vicki Davids, and Victoria Hay.
This is a recording to conjure up memories not only of a successful film but also of a time when music conveyed a lot of emotion during times of stress. Highly recommended. Grady Harp, April 06
Mrs. Henderson Presents.......2006-03-24
Met ALL my expectations, having seen/loved the film - especially the orchestration, arrangements, and vocals. Sound quality superb.
I've played this CD for others - of all age groups - all agree it's a defininte winner.
Upbeat and Fun!.......2006-03-22
Love this CD for the nostalgia! My favorite track is "All the Things You Are" by J.Kern and O.Hammerstein. This year's Oscar telecast produced a montage of film clips to this track including the last scene from "Mrs. Henderson Presents" and it was so emotion granting as is the song. Many of the other songs are from a time period right before WWII, but they are just fun and upbeat -- it was the depression, people needed to be uplifted with such such songs as "Letting in the Sunshine" and "Goody Goody." Judi Dench was asked by someone in the bleachers at the Oscars how it felt to be nominated this year for Mrs. Henderson, and she answered back, "just listen to the soundtrack darling!" How great is that???!!!!

Diverse offering full of laughter, love and the blues!!.......1998-12-24
This musical soundtrack is my favorite! It has a diverse offering of artists who range in vocals from a very robust and alluring tenor to enchanting soprano. The types of songs go from fun & upbeat to "somebody-please-get-me-a-tissue" blues. These selections will make you envision whatever scene/theme that is being performed and will force you to crawl into the number and savor/enjoy the fun or the blues of it.
I love it!! I believe you will, too.

Customer Reviews:
Best collection of marches!.......2006-08-07
In spite of the mixed reviews below, after listening to the samples, I had to send for this CD. I am so glad I did - this is the best collection of marches I have ever owned. It's worth noting that the Band of the Grenadier Guards is a British military band whose history goes back 300 years!
The Best Sousa Album.......2005-09-06
This is the best album of marches I've heard. I agree with the reviewer who said they like these versions better. The orchestral versions are good, but I used to play in the band in high school (no, I don't have any "this one time, at band camp..." stories), so I like this type better.
Sousa Marches.......2005-08-15
I like this CD better than any of the others I previewed, and when it came I wasn't disappointed. I purchased the CD to use with my dog, Nina. She loves it and it has helped her relax and gait more smoothly in preparation for exhibiting in dog shows. This CD was the only one that wasn't performed by a string orchestra. It's more like you would actually hear a marching band at a half-time football game.
There are 2 sections in this CD.......2005-06-30
There are two different sections in this CD. Section 1 includes marches 1 to 12 and it is not the best recording that I have ever hear for Sousa Marches. However, Section 2 includes marches 13 to 23 and I consider that this is one of the best recording I have ever heard for the marches of the USA Services. So, even if the two sections are very different, you may buy this CD if you have never listened the Sousa marches; it will give you the opportunity to hear them. After that, if you wish to buy a high quality CD of Sousa Marches, continue to shop on Amazon.
A Bit TOO "Budget Buy" For Sousa.......2004-05-16
I have become quite the Sousa fan in the past year. While my ear for classical music is that of a casual fanboy and not a seasoned classical music critic, I have become particular in my Sousa preferences, and this particular release left me cold. The pace of the marches on this CD are sluggish, and sounds tinny even to a listener with a tin ear.
John Philip Sousa marches are just too good and lively to settle for a budget release like this. A good release like those by "The President's Own" U.S. Marine Band series is a better place to start your Sousa collection!

Great compilation.......2002-05-10
I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.
A disappointment.......2001-12-15
There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

A Joyous Romp for the Trio.......2002-08-10
This is the most extroverted Bill Evans CD I've found and it's nice to hear him really going after the piano for almost the entire album. While Bill Evans conistantly amazes I would say that Eddie Gomez produced the best bass playing that I have heard so far. His pizzicato solos are both melodic and virtuosic but his arco solos call to mind a saxophonist due to their lyrical lines and expressive tone. His solo on "Very Early" is the most lyrical bass solo I have heard; the first time I heard it I thought someone was playing an alto. This is great music.
Great Bass Work.......2000-12-27
Evans is great on this recording. But for me, the most significant element is the bass playing of Eddie Gomez. This is a real treat for bass players to hear, and shows the greatness of Gomez in the lineage of jazz bass playing. Not to be missed.
Bill evans revisits his kind of blue days.......2000-10-05
Bill Evans Blue in Green; The canada concert is one of my favorite Bill Evans albums. Quite a bit of the album consists of ballads, the two Lonely people, what are you doing for the rest of your life and of course the title track blue in green, but there are also a few jams as well. 34 skido, so what and TTT. What makes this Cd especially good is the exquisite playing of the trio. Of course Bill Evans is the groups leader, but one shouldn't forget Marty Morrell on the drums and the inventive Eddie Gomez on the bass. Together they make a perfect trio, one in which all three are equal parts of the same group. Also this being a live concert you really get to HEAR the trio perform live making this a very organic feeling album. This album is a real treat for Bill evans fans. very worth it.
