Heartdrops: Vince Benedetti Meets Diana Krall

American born, but living in Switzerland since 1964, Vince Benedetti has worked with such luminaries as Dexter Gordon, Johnny Griffin, Dizzy Gillespie, and Stan Getz, besides leading his own ensembles. He discovered Diana Krall singing in a hotel bar in his adopted homeland in 1988. She joined his band for a European tour and this album was recorded in 1990. It never found release at the time, but Krall's subsequent success has now brought it to light. Seven Benedetti originals make it clear why the composer and pianist (not to mention trombonist as well) felt he'd found an ideal voice for his songs. With guitarist Martien Oster, bassist Christoph Sprenger, and drummer Alberto Canonico, Krall sails through them with a swooping vigor and confidence one associates with timeless standards. Two numbers are offered in alternate takes, purposely played shorter to encourage radio airplay. From saucy swagger to lilting balladry, this is a perfectly matched set of players and material. It's also an early look at a singer whose debut wasn't to appear until three years after these recordings were made. --David Greenberger

Jazziz, July 2003- Ross Boissoneau
"Krall eschews the sultry diva persona on this recording, instead bringing to vivid life a set of heartfelt originals."

Album Description
RECORDED IN 1990 AVAILABLE NOW FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER!

The first recording with Diana Krall from 1990, singing and playing on all tracks. A historic document in the career of an award winning international super-star! This is a must have recording for all Diana Krall fans!

Vince Benedetti met Diana Krall in 1988, while he was driving a taxi in Switzerland. After a brief conversation about their respective Jazz backgrounds, Benedetti learned that Krall was working as a singer-pianist in one of Zurich's most established hotels. He went to see her play—and was astounded! He had discovered a great new voice. As Benedetti describes, "Here was a singer of depth and intensity who was able to convey it all with a breezy, laid-back phrasing—something normally assumed to be contradictory. Moreover, and this was critical to her delivery, Krall had developed a mature voice and swinging comping style, using good chord voicings and placing accents & fills in all the right places."

Heartdrops is a collection of light and airy, yet very melodic compositions, played by a line-up best suited for both the material and the overall sound. Krall's sensuous voice, her impeccable phrasing and, last but not least, her very competent piano and organ treatments add that particular flavor of suaveness to a program of well selected titles, most of them by Benedetti.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre album by a great performer.......2005-12-13

You should buy this album only if you are a die-hard Diana Krall fan like me. If you are new to Diana or still exploring, stay away from this CD.

This is the worst Diana Krall album, and I have heard them all. I am struggling to find a single song to rate above 3 stars. I am afraid no part of this album will get much rotation on my iPod.

As other reviews have pointed out, the actual songs (lyrics) are so ridiculous that I actually enjoyed the instrumental passages more than the vocals! The whole album is kind of lifeless and dull and I blame the poor arrangements for that. Diana sings without emotion (you try singing those lyrics!) and the band is likewise run of the mill (a college band can swing better!) so the overall experience is nothing to write home about. Detroit Blues struck me as particularly ludicrous because the lyrics contrasted so much with the actual tone of voice and lifeless band, but they included two versions of this "masterpiece"...

If you are new to Diana Krall's work, start with her outstanding Live in Paris album. Then look up the individual albums where the songs on that live "best-of" album came from. You'll be much happier than with this piece of plastic.

3 out of 5 stars I can see why it took so long to release........2004-05-17

I own most of Diana Krall's albums. This is my least favorite. Maybe it's the style, but it seems to much of the same -cut after cut. I find myself skiping to the cut or two that does appeal. Vince needs Diana more than she needs him.

5 out of 5 stars Krall in youthful & rare form-A MUST HAVE CD!!.......2004-04-04

I was sceptical when I first heard about this "Lost Recording". Since I own all of Diana Krall's CDs, I felt I should give this historic recording a chance. "Heartdrops" is now my favorite in my Krall collection, this recording is heartfelt and swings in all the right places. Give this one a chance and you won't be disappointed! It is a great recording for the car and for those special times at home, frankly it is great anytime.

2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2004-03-03

If you've ever had the experience of someone trying to interest you in Christianity by asking you to listen to some music without first telling you it's "Christian Rock," you'll understand my disappointment with this well made, well played CD. If ever there was "Christian Jazz," this is it. If you are of the religious persuasion, enjoy! Now, where's my copy of "Steppin' Out..." :)

2 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Diana, 1 Star for the Tunes.......2004-02-20

I love Diana Krall's singing. I have all her CD's and I can listen to "Live in Paris" repeatedly. She's in good voice on this recording, too. The problem is that the material she sings is poor. The tunes sound so much alike, it's monotonous. It appears Benedetti had delusions of grandeur as to the quality of his songwriting talent since two of the songs are presented with alternate takes recorded for radio airplay. I wonder if any radio stations ever actually played them.
