With 20 originals from Louis Jordan's '40s and early '50s heyday at Decca Records, Best Of is the definitive collection of the blues-jazz bandleader-singer's work. Most of the cuts are up-tempo jumpers with lyrics that tell sly tales of the black experience in midcentury: the house-partiers in "Saturday Night Fish Fry" end up in the slam, while the institution of marriage occasions a warning in "Beware." Jordan also dabbled in Latin and Brazilian rhythms on "Run Joe" and "Early in the Morning," and even added a major ballad, "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Cryin'," to the standard repertoire. A major influence on Ray Charles, James Brown, and Chuck Berry, Jordan is a must-hear. --Rickey Wright

5 out of 5 stars As hip today as it was then.......2007-05-13

This collection truly gives insight into the beginnings of Rock 'N Roll. Sassy, big grooves, rockin' and swingin'. Great sax solos. A must-have for a true collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Louis Jordan.......2007-03-28

No wonder he influenced a lot of musicians; Ray Charles, James Brown, Little Richard and many more. Not only is the man a excellent musician, he's also an excellent entertainer. His music is rocking and has a story line.

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Loius Jordan.......2007-01-12

I bought this as a gift for my Dad. He's been looking for the song "Beans and Cornbread" for as far back as I can remember. He loves this CD and keeps it in his shop to listen to whenever he's out there.

5 out of 5 stars Over The Legal Limit For Fun.......2006-04-28

Just do yourself a favor and get it. With 20 stone-cold winners lined up shoulder-to-shoulder, this is not just the best Louis Jordan anthology available, it delivers more jubilation for the buck than just about anything in the Amazon jungle.

"Serious" students of pop music use the word "important" when describing Jordan, a word that always makes me think I am about to encounter something boring that will remind me of medicine. Yes, he was one of the originators of rock & roll. Yes, he was a breakthrough crossover artist who appealed to black and white audiences alike. Yes, he created a distinctive style that used singing/talking in place of an instrument, influencing ersatz practitioners to come. And yes, he used "coded" lyrics that were extremely funny, and salty at times, to cover material that simply never got aired in those days. All well and good. But the net on Louis Jordan is that he is a party waiting to happen; put this CD on and in no time at all you'll find yourself laughing, dancing, and feeling better about life.

Whether on sax, vocals, as a writer, or bandleader, Louis Jordan cooks. Saturday Night Fish Fry is a rockin' classic with a story to tell, as are Beans and Cornbread, Five Guys Named Moe, and Choo Choo Ch'Boogie. Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens is a riot, a splendid piece of political incorrectness that uses code to have a little fun (a lot of fun) at the white man's expense. The source is a very old, racist joke that Jordan simply turns on its head and returns with a smile. Caledonia, another foot stomper, is equally irreverent and delightful.

Jordan also shows off his smooth, lady-killer crooning chops on tracks like Blue Light Boogie and Early In The Mornin' - nice. So jump on in, the water's fine. If you want to be wowed by what a pioneering influence he was, that's great. But don't miss out on the real point of Louis Jordan - this cat is over the legal limit for fun.

5 out of 5 stars not a loser in the bunch.......2006-02-08

from the 1st to the last song; all are tremendous...this is the way to make a CD...and that was the way to be an entertainer...

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The foundation set of R&B.......2007-01-10

Simply put, for its value this is one of the greatest collections of CD's of utter joy and happiness around.

This multivolume set covers the early music and musical peak of the musical and comical link between Bert Williams and Louis Armstrong (LJ's dad was a friend of Bert's and used his records to inspire his son, and Satch was a mentor and occasional collaborator with LJ) and the first generation of R&B rockers (Ray Chalres, the Godfather, B.B. King, and Little Richard have all sang their praises to LJ).

Some of his really rare early music is found on the early discs. It took him a while to find his style of humorous stories told to a beat and inspired sax playing, but there are still some diamonds in the rough here. "Swinging in the Coconut Trees" is an amusing and atmospheric instrumental, "Keep a Knockin" was later covered by Little Richard, "Do You Call That a Buddy" is a good comical blues with some nice background singing by the T-5, "June Teenth Jamboree" is probably the first record to deal with this early black holiday (LJ was astudent of Black folklore, and incorporated it into his music), and "What's the Use of Gettin' Sober" is the kind of wild, authentic black humor that would put Amos & Andy's "PseudoNegro" antics to shame.

Later on, we get into the familiar bits of inspired nuttiness and great musicianship. "Caldonia," "Sat Nite Fish Fry," "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie," "Beware" (and its sequel "Look Out Sister" which has some hilarious early rapping), and what is to me the funniest R&B record of all time, the knee-slapping floor-pounding classic BEANS & CORNBREAD.

We also get some of the calypso tunes with Jordan's expertly delivered "Jafakean" accent such as "Run Joe," "Early in the morning," "Stone Cold dead in the Market," and "Push Ka peesh Kee Pie." The West Indians were flattered by these tunes and LJ made succesful tours of the West Indies.

However, the set ends at about 1950, just before our man's career peaked. But his later material is available elsewhere on Amazon. In either case, whenver you come home from a hard day at work, put this set on your CD player. It'll put your psychologist out of work!

5 out of 5 stars Great Listening.......2006-08-14

I wandered into this CD while checking out the many great boxed sets that JSP Records has to offer. I knew very little about Louis Jordan before hearing this, and now I'm hooked! For anybody whole loves to hear the building blocks of modern music, this is for you. If you like to hear things like Bob Wills, Milton Brown, Louis Armstrong, This is for you.

4 out of 5 stars Lloyd Brown St Louis, MO.......2006-04-17

Wolf Shadow, great review. Louis Jordan was my uncle and I have almost all of these great cuts on original 33 1/3s and even 45s and 78s. I will buy this CD to preserve my Louis collection which I hardly ever played in the past 40 years.

I give it four stars instead of five because his grearest blues hit "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out" is not included in over 130 cuts.

There are others I would have liked to have seen included like 'School Days', which we loved as kids years ago. Plus more of his blues solos. Lots of people did not consider my uncle a "serious" musician, which he surely was.

All in all, a great box set well worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars A Whole Lotta Music For Not Much Dough.......2006-03-07

Don't think twice-- buy it! Great collection goes on and on, and never runs out of steam. Louis Jordan was at his peak when these were recorded. I repeat: buy!

4 out of 5 stars Five Guys Named Moe - bad transfer!.......2005-03-21

The sound quality on this set is great with one exception: "Five Guys Named Moe" sounds horrible! It sounds like it was dubbed from an out-of-round record! What's most puzzling is that this is the only track that sounds bad, and that this was one of Louis Jordan's biggest hits, with many superior transfers available. JSP usually does a stellar job with sound - what happened here?! Luckily, I still have my LP version. Otherwise I'd give this set 5 stars.

The two-disc, 46-cut Good Times does a great job of demonstrating how singer and saxophonist Louis Jordan's music evolved from the fairly straight swing of his early Decca sides to the jump blues that made him a father of rock & roll and soul. "Ain't That Just Like a Woman," for instance, features guitarist Carl Hogan giving birth to one of Chuck Berry's signature licks, while the likes of "Beware" and "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie" balance punch and elegance like the work of few bandleaders before or since. It would've been nice to see the mightily syncopated "Early in the Morning" (later covered by both Ray Charles and Harry Nilsson) taking the place of, say, "The Two Little Squirrels," but there really are few complaints to be made about this collection. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Man Who Invented Little Richard.......2006-04-01

If i hear Little Richard Pop Off One More Time About How He Invented Rock & Roll( "i'm the the ayatolla of Rock & Rolla"!),i'll throw the cd and vid of "Caldonia" at him and tell him to SHUT UP!! The Imodest and Full Of Themselves always Steal and appropriate from others.Jelly Roll Morton also claimed he invented Jazz, and great though he was- he,Like Richard, was more concerned with self promotion and personal myth making. The Boastfull are never the first string artists. That takes sincerity and humility. And p.s. Jerry Lee Lewis(entertaining and raw as he is)got much of his deal from the Boogie Woogie piano playing-singing of Harry "The Hipster" Gibson-also from jordan's era.Why do these guys egos prevent them for giving credit to their progenitors.

5 out of 5 stars The #1 R&B Artist Of The 1940's.......2004-06-29

This genius was the #1 selling African American artist of the 1940's. No one else sold more records or had more hits. He out sold The Mills Bros.,Nat Cole,Duke,Ella,Buddy and Ella Johnson,Satchmo, and Count Basie. He was the #1 R&B artist of the 40's with more top 10 hits and more #1's on the r&b charts than any other Black act of that period. Louis also had a total of 9 top 10 pop hits between 1944 and 1950 and he is the only r&b based artist to have 2 #1 hits on the country music charts(an astonishing feat back then). Those two songs are Jordan classics-1943's and early 44's classic "Ration Blues" and 1944's "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't Ma Baby".Both songs are included on this wonderful cd.The great Nat "King"Cole hit #1 on the Country charts in the mid 40's with his "Straighten up and fly right" but Nat was more of a pop singer than r&b singer. 'G.I.Jive" was a massive hit for him in 1944.It was #1 on both the r&b and pop charts that year. Some may think of Louis Jordan as a clown and that's a monumental tragedy-this cat was a musical genius and an incredible composer, bandleader, and saxophonist. The clown moniker could be easily applied to Charlie Chaplin,Jerry Lewis,Laurel and Hardy, and Harold Lloyd, but they were genuises as well. This cd is a must for any music lovers collection.

4 out of 5 stars Great Compact Jive Package!.......2003-09-02

Starting as a member of the Count Basie band in the 1930s, Louis Jordan soon became known as sax player, vocalist, and jive man extraordinaire on his many solo recordings from the late 1930s until his death in the mid-1970s. This package focuses only on the years 1938 thru 1953, which is admittedly most of his best work, but it would be nice to hear some of his later recordings as well. In particular, two recordings of the classic "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens", cut in the 50s and 70s, improve by being taken at a faster tempo. Louis practically invented jump blues, and no less a giant than BB King has paid tribute with an album of all Jordan material. (Let the Good Times Roll). Building on Cab Calloway's earlier reputation as the king of jive language and music, Jordan creates an evocative, often hilarious picture of the trials and tribulations of the black performer of his day. His takes on trains ("Texas and Pacific", "Choo Choo, Ch'Boogie," and "Salt Pork, West Virginia"), drinking ("What's the Use of Being Sober?"), waitresses ("Boogie Woogie Blue Plate"), and life itself (the wonderful "Life is So Peculiar" duet with Louis Armstrong) still delight after all these years due to his irrepresible humor and jive language. So, if your budget only allows for a two-CD set, spring for this edition by one of the most upbeat, positive, and all around funny cats ever, and run, don't walk, to the nearest Saturday night fish fry.

4 out of 5 stars great stuff - what a great discovery.......2002-05-14

I first heard this in a bar in New York as my wife and I were celebrating our wedding anniversary. The barman had a whole load of old music that he was playing - he was a real expert
Anyway every time we heard a tune that we really liked it turned out to be a Louis Jordan number so we went home and ordered this CD

We play it all the time: its very varied, there's some really neat period pieces which initially sound a little silly but they really grow on you - I find myself singing "barnacle bill" all the time. Great fun and a lovely change from the normal fare- try it

5 out of 5 stars The True King of R&b -Essential!.......2001-06-30

DAMN Chuck Berry! LATER for Little Richard (he could just SHUT UP!) LOUIE JORDAN was the TRUE King of Rock and Roll and R&B! Listen to the wild preaching in "Beans and Cornbread" and try not to roll on the floor laughing. Dig "Open the Door Richard" and I DARE you not to sing along. Try keeping your feet still through "Salt Pork West Virginia" or "Don't Worry Bout That Mule." Trying to find a bad Louis Jordan record is like finding green snow and chicken's teeth! The music is great. This CD recording of the Broadway cast has all the zeal and energy the music had in the play.

5 out of 5 stars Fun, Fun, Fun.......2005-10-10

I really enjoyed this CD. If you enjoy jazz style music, you're sure to like this disc. I want to see the show now.

5 out of 5 stars Five Guys Named Moe.......2005-09-18

Amazing vocals and some really fun songs by an American master who, unfortunately, has slipped into obscurity. Good stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2005-03-27

I love this soundtrack and I've never even seen the show! Can't wait until it's revived in my area!

5 out of 5 stars A 27 song rollick! .......2004-11-14

Hope that I get to see the play sometime. The music is excellent. Got turned onto Louis Jordan quite by accident this Veteran's Day when our local NPR affiliate played "GI Jive" on the radio. I looked the song up at the first opportunity and now I'm hooked on Louie Jordan. This collection is one of the most positive, fun-loving CD's I've heard since Keb' Mo'. It's a sure fire mood lifter!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Jordan for beginners.......2006-01-04

This is an excellent way to familiarize yourself with Louis Jordan, the clown prince of jaz and r&b in the 40s and 50s. This is filled with some of Jordan's best (and funnniest) story songs mixed with LJ's wailing sax and the jumping jive of the Tympany Five.

This includes fall-down on the floor funny classics such as "Beans and Cornbread", Jordan's wildly hilarious sermon on friendship. If you can listen to this without falling down the floor in uncontrollable laughter, something is seriously WRONG with you! We also have the dancing laugh-riot "Saturday Night Fuish Fry," a jiving farce about a police raid at a ghetto party. "Jack You're Dead" is a clever double-entendre about impotence and one could see the roots of Little Richard's scream in "Caldonia." Jordan and his former bandmate Ella Fitzgerald have their "Jafakean" accents intact for "Stone Cold Dead in the Market." Apparently, the West Indians were not offended as Jordan was VERY popular in the West Indies and many calypso singers would copy "Run Joe" in later years.

Louis Jordan was heavily influenced by Bert Williams, the foundation of modern American comedy and the father of the funny story-song. Listen to this and pick up other Jordan box sets and anthologies and keep them around for when you come home after a bad day. Good for what ails you.

5 out of 5 stars What IS the use in getting sober?.......2005-12-14

A dose of Louis Jordan's music is like a little sunshine in your day. Great, jumpin' stuff...don't be sucked in my lame cover versions..this collection covers all the must have items in LJ's repertoire, from Saturday Night Fish Fry to Jack, You're Dead.

Get it in time for your next party!

For those who know about Louis Jordan, well, they already know. For everyone else, Louis Jordan is an absolute master. You will be amazed. So much of the music of the sixties and seventies is a pale reflection of the genius of Louis Jordan. Take the plunge, you'll be very happy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best economy priced LJ out there!.......2007-01-14

This set is a requirement for Jordanites. The overall majority of the good stuff and then some for a very economical price. Of course one is tempted to compare this with the 5 disc-set "Louis Jordan and the Tympani 5"- so here goes: That set tends to concentrate more on the early stuff up to about 1950. This set has some of the early stuff (from the late 30s and early 40s) concentrating on LJ's peak years (mid to late 40s) and his big band and later work of the early 50s. In either case, anyone who is fond of good jumping, jazzy blues and floor-pounding funny stories (like his comedy ancestor and father's friend Bert Williams, Jordan was a master of the comic story-song), will do well to get this set.

5 out of 5 stars My most prized possesion.......2005-10-05

This box set is hands down the best set out there. It has all the classics; sax a woogie, Caldonia etc and tons of great songs you have never heard. The sound quality is just as good as any of Jordan's other albums. On top of all that it is dirt cheap. i feel bad for you if you don't buy this box set.

Albums consisting entirely of one artist paying tribute to another are commonplace, especially in the blues world where a particular artist's musical heritage is easy to trace. It's rare, though, for an artist of B.B. King's caliber to do such a tribute, and we're all lucky that the artist he chose to honor is Louis Jordan--the King of the Blues saluting the King of Swing. King's clean, expressive guitar style and rough-hewn voice are so distinctive that there's no mistaking them for anyone else's, and hearing them applied to Jordan's classic songs--including "Ain't Nobody Here but Us Chickens," "Somebody Done Changed the Lock on My Door," "Saturday Night Fish Fry," and "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out"--demonstrates both King's considerable skill and the great versatility of Jordan's songwriting. That makes this record more than a mere curiosity, as does the stellar piano work from another living legend, Dr. John. --Genevieve Williams

5 out of 5 stars ****3/4 - very entertaining, very enjoyable. Very good!.......2006-05-21

One of B.B. King's best latter-day albums, "Let the Good Times Roll" is a terrific collection of 18 songs usually associated with jump blues master Louis Jordan.
His take on classics like "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens" and "Let the Good Times Roll" are less boisterous and more laid-back than Jordan's, but he sings each and every song so well, with impeccable timing and phrasing, and the stellar combo never ever sets a finger wrong.

B.B. King's take on the sexist (and funny) "Ain't That Just Like A Woman" is pure delight, a joyously swaggering, swinging rendition which I listened to three or four times in a row the first time I played the CD (in my car on my way to work). Nero didn't _really_ fiddle while Rome burned, but it's still funny!

King also does a stylish, personal interpretation of Jimmy Cox's "Nobody Knows You When You're Down and Out", and lays down a great "Choo Choo Ch'Boogie" with a wonderful old-timey big band feel, a jazzy "Somebody Done Changed the Lock on My Door", and a super-cool finger-snapping "Is You Is or Is You Ain't My Baby?". You just can't sit still to that one.

Lesser-known songs like the hilarious "Saturday Night Fish Fry" are often quite as good as the recognized classics, and the band, which features Dr John on piano and the near-legendary R&B drummer Earl Jones, creates a subtle, seductive background for King to paint on.
Jones was 74 at the time of recording, by the way. King was only 73, a regular spring chicken.
Get this CD. It is one of the best, most mature albums of King's 55-year career.

5 out of 5 stars Blues Sunnyside Up!.......2003-02-25

Quite simply, this is my favorite B.B. King album. Rollicking songs, great recorded sound, an outstanding rhythm section backing up B.B.'s fine vocals (now with a touch of gravel in them). I was toe-tapping from beginning to end. Who says you can't have your blues sunnyside up?

2 out of 5 stars Get the real thing.......2002-11-29

BB is a great blues performer, but his jump blues doesn't jump. Buy some actual Louis Jordan recordings, and really go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Just great!.......2002-06-17

I first heard this recording in London, at a small restaurant that was playing a series of great CDs. I asked the manager to give me the name, and when I returned home I picked up the recording. Since then I've probably listened to it 20 or 30 times. It is simply a great recording--funny, lively, high-spirited. My entire family loves it and we play it in the car all the time. Our favorite is "There ain't nobody here but us chickens," which never fails to get us all in a good mood. If you love B.B. King or Louis Jordan, get this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tribute.......2002-01-06

I would highly recommend this cd to anyone who is a fan of Louis Jordan or B.B. King. B.B. does the original songs justice, and it's a great tribute to the late great Louis Jordan. From listening to this cd I have become a big fan of Louis Jordan, and appreciate him tremendously. When ya pick up this cd be sure to pick up a Louis Jordan cd also.
