Customer Reviews:
One of the top 5 albums worthy of the Reprise era.......2007-03-18
Not just his recordings, but all the recordings on Reprise, including Joni, Van, Neil Young, etc.
There's also the Led Zeppelin connection to the Chairman here... Jake Holmes wrote "Dazed and Confused" and never got co-writing credit. Not to mention the "Jersey Boys" 4 Seasons with Bob Gaudio.
Sinatra was one of the first to do concept albums before there were long playing albums.
It sounds like no other Sinatra release before or since. It's his "Nebraska" even if he didn't write the words, he had an excellent songwriter though. Harry Nilsson sang Randy Newman, this is no different! I hope they release it in the US even if it's available in the Complete Reprise box set.
Story Telling at Its Best.......2007-02-07
Watertown is an album that has to be listened to carefully. It's not your usual album, but is a mini-operatic production. It is outstanding, and will find you listening to it over and over, because the words, the music and the heartfelt singing are great. This recording was made over 20 years ago, and I believe, was ahead of its time.
A little story from Watertown.......2007-02-02
I am not the perfect expert in Mr. Sinatra music yet, however, I am discovering all his music slowly and "Watertown" is 1 album I fell in love with.
This CD is different from all FS music I head so far. It is a more Rock Oriented Pop album and it evolves not only as simple songs but as a story of a Middle-aged man in a small town whose wife had left him with the kids; so naturally the effect of the songs is an atmosphere of loneliness of a broken man; and although this is not the usual style of Mr. Sinatra, with his great voice, he turns the music into a beautiful warm performance full of emotion giving the album lots of depth.
So far, I have heard only few of Mr. Sinatra's 70 + albums but I think "Waterfront" is and will remain one my favorite album for this great artist.
Sinatra's Greatest Record. (Yeah, I said it....).......2007-01-09
I'm not really a big fan of Sinatra. I mean, sure I dig the hits and all, I respect his body of work, but his thing is not really my bag, at least not yet. So I was quite surprised when a cohort of mine turned me on to this record, "Watertown". I don't understand how anyone could label this album "difficult" or "a failure". It's different that his other work, I suppose, but maybe that's what I'm looking for.
As soon as I heard the first four notes I knew I was home again. This record spoke to my instincts directly, hitting all the right emotional notes, something a lot of Mr. Sinatra's work does not do for me. Maybe his singing is not as rock solid on this album as his earlier work, but for me that's a plus. The man always seemed too impervious for me to identify with the feelings he was expressing. Here, you can hear some weakness in him, and you can really feel the anguish in his words. Music isn't about perfection. It's the imperfections in recordings that often open the door to true emotional impact. That's why today's music is so unmoving to me; it's all been enhanced and polished and perfected to the point that the human element has been completely removed.
Yeah, I'm square; maybe I'll get hip someday and learn to find joy in the rest of Mr. Sinatra's catalog. But I ask you, what kind of world is this where something so beautiful is kept hidden from the public? Out of print in the United States when it should be receiving the grand treatment, being re-released with high quality sound, extensive liner notes and fancy packaging. But no, it is sent away into out of print record bin exile to be forgotten forever. I didn't even know it existed until 3 weeks ago! How many more gems like this are lying dormant underground waiting to be rediscovered?
Every song here is a work of art, beautifully arranged, like a higher power was at work making the notes fall into place ever so perfectly. It's a miracle of sound recording. It speaks to the heart....my heart, anyway. If you're looking for swingin' good times, go elsewhere. If you are looking for an album of dignified beauty from an American master, give it a try. If you only hear on Sinatra album in your lifetime this should be it.
Take a trip to Watertown.......2007-01-04
I bought this cd expecting nothing. I found it at a Tower Records going out of business sale. I had never heard of this album, and hadn't heard any of the songs previously. I have always been a fan of Sinatra's reprise era records, although the quality certainly varied, they were a time of creative expressions and different musical styles.
Watertown certainly rates as one of his best recordings from this era. The song cycle was excellent. His voice expressive and the instrumentation interesting. I play this cd often. When you hear this recording you hear the voice of a man who has been around the block. A man who has had his share of heartbreak. This is accomplished without coming across as maudlin. Try it.

Product Description
Sometimes we think about the album like this: landing softly in a new town, things that make you sad but are so beautiful you bring them out again anyway, the part where you kick the trashcan just because you remembered something that pissed you off, the moonlit night where you were far from the city and the stars and the orange and the snow swirled together, the relentless highway drive that you dont remember because you were listening to the radio really loud.

Now I Remember Why I Love Albums.......2005-09-29
Once and a while you stumble across a record that reminds you of why you love music in the frist place.
My music-love-life ebbs and flows. At times, it all seems so silly, you know, like if you listen to the wrong radio station for more than a half-hour, you start to wonder why you bother at all. During those times, I try to look back on my past. I try to remember what it was that could make me just sit and listen to the same record over and over.
Sometimes, it seems like those records are destined to be just a thing of the past. Is there any heart in modern popular music at all? Or is it all fashion?
But then I heard Watertown by this little band from San Francisco and all hope returned to me.
What a great collection of earnest beautiful songs! This is an album. Sure, it's full of great individual songs, but the CD flows like a record, like it's all one thing.
It's starts off smoothly with the enchanting "Synaptic Gap". It's hypnotising and it's setting you up for the trip that's in store for you. From the popfest "Instaglo" through the wrenching "Birthday" passed the nolstalgic high-point "Watertown" and on and on. These songs are perfect for a car-ride or for just lying back and listening through a big set of orange headphones. The music wraps around you like a blanket.
This album feels like home to me.
Lovers of well-written honest catchy indie-poppy-rocky quality music should check this out. Recommended for fans of Trembling Blue Stars, The Breeders, Fountains of Wayne, Liz Phair, School for the Dead, The Lucksmiths, Aimee Mann, Belle and Sebastian, The Feelies, and even The Cars.

not a country fan per se, but..........2006-04-13
Sometimes one has just got to give things a chance.i had met him and wouldn't have thought him a songwriter really. Very self-effacing fellow really, but lots of fun. Then, during SXSW in austin, I heard him sing. The pure emotive quality of his voice caught me first. Then i heard the songs for what they were. Yes, he is quite a story teller- heck of a way with words actually.
After another trip to see him, I walked away hooked. i can't quite pull up what it is, but something about the words and he music just sticks with me. Maybe it's the poet in me that hears the one in him. I just know I can't seem to get certain phrases from this CD out of my head, so I play it over and over.
it will have to suffice too, 'cos I think the fellow can go somewhere with this. Take a listen, and be prepared to be swept up in it. It can haunt your dreams.
love his whiney voice and lyrics.......2005-09-27
this cd has been a pleasure to listen to. my husband called mando a "dylan wannabe" but i've really enjoyed it.
Hard to Pigeonhole.......2005-05-29
I was drawn tho this artist by the genre I perceived -- "alt country." I enjoy Lucinda Williams, Whiskeytown, the Gourds. Mando has all the deep emotions of a Lucinda Williams, but generally a much subtler way of expression. As such, the songs don't instantly bowl you over like Williams' "Metal Firecracker" but instead their understated warmth seeps in. I found myself humming these tunes the rest of the day after a few listens. There is a touch (just a touch!) of Lyle Lovett in his vocal style; he has a world-weary voice for such a young fellow. If I had to come up with some analogy to describe him for you, I'd say he is the male equivalent of Laura Cantrell - uncluttered musicality. It's not country, it's not folk, exactly; it's American Music.
Mando Saenz has a unique flair of poetic storytelling.......2005-05-25
Playing Time - 38:34 -- The key to a successful album of all-original singer/songwriter music is simply to have something worthwhile to say and to present it with fervent emotion and quality musicianship. Mando Saenz is building quite a following for his unique flair of poetic storytelling. Born in Mexico, this Army doctor's son moved a great deal as a child. The title cut, "Watertown," is a nostalgic story of going back to a place that the family lived with its seagulls and humid air. His dad's plan was to get to Texas when he figured out how, and they eventually did make it to Corpus Christi, TX. Despite earning an MBA at Texas Tech in Lubbock, Mando Saenz decided to follow his muse and to sing about such things as the "insolence of man" (Egg Song) and a heavy heart that "bleeds the soul" and "frees the mind" (Noble Kings). Fortunately, the CD's jacket includes lyrics so we can further ponder Mando's evocative messages and music that largely avoids typical antics and stereotypes.
Despite his eccentricity, Saenz's songs are very engaging and tastefully rendered. Guitars, bass, drums, fiddle, accordion, mandolin, steel, dobro and harmonica complement his emotional vocal delivery. Some songs are arranged with minimal instrumentation while others have a fuller sound provided by Tommy Detamore, Bobby Flores, Dan Dreeben, David Carroll, and Joel Guzman.
For the most part, Mando Saenz's songs are leisurely, soulful and spiritually-tinged. Upon first listen, my favorites were the more up-tempo tunes with more of a bluegrass beat like "Egg Song" and "Engine Roll." With subsequent listens, I found myself focusing even closer on the lyrics of Mando's slower songs like "Julia" and "Rusty Steeple." "Watertown" has a distinctive folksy feeling, and this helps it to build a good rapport with its audience. It's delightfully new Texas music that is exhilarating and authentic. I commend Mando Saenz for trading his MBA for a guitar, harmonica and music career. I wish him luck in a tough business, and I hope to see him on Austin City Limits soon. (Joe Ross, Roseburg OR.)
