Schoolhouse Rock! (1973 TV Series) [Box set] [Soundtrack]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
It's hard to overestimate the effect Schoolhouse Rock had on anyone who was a child between 1973 and 1985. Forty-one three-minute educational cartoons set to original songs, they were the original music videos, and they taught countless kids the difference between adjectives ("Unpack Your Adjectives") and adverbs ("Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here"), how to multiply ("Three Is a Magic Number"), basic principles of science ("Do the Circulation," "Interplanet Janet"), and American civics ("I'm Just a Bill," "The Preamble"). All of the original songs are here, plus four Money Rock songs--"Dollars and Sense" and "Where the Money Goes" are as classic as any of the original standouts--and four tracks from the short-lived Scooter Computer & Mr. Chips series (which, unlike the rest of the Schoolhouse Rock songs, can be dated by the proto-new-wave-influenced instrumentation). A classic collection of (mostly) timeless songs that shaped the minds of a generation or two: how many box sets can you say that about? --Randy Silver

Great CD! Reminded me of when I was a kid, and, my kids love it! Buy it! It's fun!

5 out of 5 stars Useful Tools For Children of All Ages and Home Schoolers.......2007-03-14

This School House edition is used by my grand-children ages 6 and 4 and is very upbeat. Best of School House Rock captures the childrens imagination and remains as a vivid learning tool. My daughter learned many of the basics as a young person when the Videos of School House were available when she was younger.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Collection, But Could Have Had Room For At Least One More Great Tune.......2007-03-13

This is a good collection of those catchy favorites, as I remember enjoying them as a wee lad, but there's certainly room for Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Get Your Adverbs Here. Small gripe, but collections invariably leave out someone's personal favorite I suppose, and I always dug that one. Glad though that these educational (and musically well-crafted ditties) are on remastered CDs at last.

5 out of 5 stars Best of Schoolhouse Rock.......2007-02-09

My daughter needed to learn the Preamble for school and was having problems learning it because it happens to be quite lengthy. I remembered hearing it when I was a little girl on tv and singing along with it which made it much easier to learn. She got extra credit for being the first to learn it in her class and we let the teacher know that the cd was available if they needed it for other children in the class.

5 out of 5 stars No more moaning and groaning about learning "boring stuff.".......2007-01-19

I used this for my 13yr old step-daughter, 12ry old, & 9yr old while studying the constitution. Not only have they memorized the preamble, they can't stop singing it. I find myself humming all the songs. Even my two year old is singing the songs. All the kids can effectively summerize the birth of this country, the functions of the constitution, a Bill and more. My 9yr old was having a hard time remembering her multiplication facts, but after listening to the songs; "Three is a Magic Number, My Hero Zero, Figure Eight..." just a couple of times it just clicked and she's flying through division now. My 13yr old is stuggling with language arts, but since listening to the songs; Unpack Your Adjectives, (my favorite) Conjunction Junction, & Interjections things clicked for her. Language Arts is no longer an overwhelming subject. All my kids found The Best of Schoolhouse Rocks to be a treat. They ask me to put it on while they're working, promising they'll work quietly and diligently. This is a win-win situation. They love it, I love it, even the 2yr old loves it. I also bought the DVD and even my "too cool" 13yr old watches it. This is not just for little kids. My 13, 12, & 9yr olds loaded it on their Ipod's!

The beauty of Schoolhouse Rock in its original Saturday morning run (1973-85) was that kids watching couldn't tell whether the catchy three-minute cartoon jingles were meant to be commercials, shows, or something else entirely. That enabled overexposed TV youth to learn without realizing it between episodes of Scooby Doo and Fat Albert. Then the Brady Bunch generation became the alternative nation, and the innocence with which they took in these grammar, history, and math lessons was lost. Now comes the obligatory tribute album, Schoolhouse Rock Rocks--pleasant enough, but full of postmodern yuks and missed-the-point nostalgia that aim to celebrate but instead drain the joy from childhood memories.

Though it's somewhat interesting to hear Pavement turn "Mo More Kings" into lo-fi krautrock or Moby make "Verb: That's What's Happening" into industrial techno-pop, the performers who most successfully preserve Schoolhouse Rock's edutainment viability are those who are most cartoonish to begin with: Ween ("The Shot Heard 'round the World"), Biz Markie ("The Energy Blues"), and Daniel Johnston ("Unpack Your Adjectives"). The problem remains, nonetheless: Any revamping of these songs implies Schoolhouse Rock somehow needed to be made hipper. That none of these songs is better than its original proves how very unhip '70s kids have grown up to be. --Roni Sarig

4 out of 5 stars Your Mind Grows Flowered.......2007-05-25

This is a very nifty CD that puts a more modern-day twist on the old "Schoolhouse Rock" songs that we all know and love. I bought this "on spec" with the idea that it was quirky and different enough to possibly have some gems - and indeed it does.

I'm not much of a hip-hop fan, but the real standout was "The Tale Of Mr. Morton" by Skee-Lo - worth the price alone.

3 out of 5 stars Gen X reminiscence [3.5 stars].......2007-03-30

Us 30-somethings grew up watching Saturday morning cartoons on ABC. In the late 70's and early 80's, in between feature cartoons and commercials, ABC ran the "School House Rock" animated shorts, videos really. They were educational, catchy and fun. Those songs are part of the quilt that is the pop culture of us Gen X'ers.

In the waning days of the "grunge" and (so-called) "alternative" music movements, some of the notable artists in those styles assembled to pay tribute to School House Rocks. The result was this CD, featuring Moby, Ween, Pavement, Blind Melon, the Lemonheads, Man or Astro-Man, Biz Markie and others, covering songs like "Three is the Magic Number," "No More Kings," "I'm Just a Bill," "Inter-Planet Janet" and about a dozen others. Some covers are truer to the originals than others. Most are at least interesting. A few are disappointing. But all of them bring back nice childhood memories (if you're the sentimental sort.)

Though the songs look back to the 70's and 80's, the covers are bathed in the 90's. The sound on this album says more about the time it was recorded than when the songs were written. Had this album been made 2 or 3 years later than it was, it would have had a decidedly bland pop/hip-hop sound and probably would've featured Britney, Backstreet Boys, N' Sync, 98 Degrees, et al. Instead, it has a bit of an edge, a little bite to it.

School House Rock Rocks! is not unlike Saturday Morning, the 1995 album of covers of TV cartoon theme songs (like Matthew Sweet doing "Scooby-Do Where Are You?" and Ramones on "Spider-Man".) In fact, Saturday Morning preceded this collection. Both are very similar in that they cover TV tunes from the 70's (and a few from the 60's.) If you like School House Rock Rocks, check out Saturday Morning, too.

3 out of 5 stars Don't mess with an original.......2006-12-31

I also thought this would be remakes of the originals but instead it's "rocked" up versions of the originals which I think lack the simplicity and snappiness that made them memorable to me as a child. It's better than nothing, but not by much.

1 out of 5 stars A "Not Necessary" remake - the Originals are better.......2006-11-11

Sorry, I thought this would be a great updated version of the classic SHR music - and I was really disappointed. I don't really understand the point of this album - why "remake" music that was timeless and pretty much perfect in the first place?
I can't imagine my own kids actually learning anything from these remakes (and bottom line, wasn't that the point?)... and listening to "No More Kings" was downright depressing - when SHR has always had the exact-opposite effect!

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia for Gen Xers.......2006-07-28

Sometimes, covers of old songs and attempts to modernize old childhood favorites just fall flat. This isn't one of those times.

From the rocking rendition of "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly Get Your Adverbs Here" by Buffalo Tom to the R&B Soul crooning of "The Tale of Mr. Morton" by Skee-lo, this album will have you singing along and recalling those simpler days of catching Schoolhouse Rock on Saturday Mornings.

A wonderful effort by all involved and a must-have for children of the 70's and 80's.

By now the story is almost a cliché: hardworking Midwestern rocker can't break into the mainstream despite a truckload of critical raves, impassioned live shows, and ties to kindred soul and superstar Bruce Springsteen, who works similar hardscrabble territory. But Grushecky, now a full-time teacher in his home town of Pittsburgh, still considers himself fortunate. "Daddy always told me, money don't mean everything / Consider yourself a lucky man, you got a guitar and you still can sing," he elaborates on the title track. It's one of 13 boldly honest slices of life on this terrific hour-long disc.

Disregard the rather deceptive cover photo of the relaxed singer, gazing out on a tranquil lake with an acoustic guitar by his side. One listen to the blistering opening "Code of Silence"--a co-write with Springsteen, who trades verses with Grushecky and tears into a typically slashing guitar lead--and you'll realize this is no introspective, acoustic folkie strummer. That shouldn't imply he's not reflective, though. Rugged ballads such as "Father and Son" and "The Other Shoe" view life from an honest middle-age perspective that is unflinching and never sappy. Springsteen adds his guitar or vocals to three other tracks, but this is all Grushecky's show, as his flinty voice and rocking songs mix poetry with passion in a volatile explosion of emotional intensity that can't be summoned up by less journeyman artists. He's abandoned the brass-ring grind of the music business and is content to release mature, edgy, quality work--that is what makes A Good Life such an unqualified success. --Hal Horowitz

Classic rock is still big -- even my young nephews are listening to Bob Seger and Queen and Led Zepplin. But the problem with being a classic rock fan is that you're going to be listening to the same music for the next 20 years. Let's face it, there aren't many new artists breaking into classic rock radio playlists. That's a shame because there is great music out there, you just have to find it.

So check out A Good Life. I think there's a big audience for this album, they just doesn't know it exists. It's one of the best rock and roll records I've heard in a long time. Bruce Springsteen plays on a couple of tracks, and you can hear his influence all over the album -- although it has been a long time since Springsteen has played blues-based, blue-collar rock like this.

5 out of 5 stars From the heart and soul.......2007-01-29

This is music that makes you glad to be alive. Pure clear crystal clean.
Sometimes slashing, sometimes soothing, gives hope, gives solace, makes you dance, makes you cry.
Beautiful!

5 out of 5 stars Joe Grushecky Continues To Amaze Us.......2006-12-02

Joe Grushecky's newest CD, A GOOD LIFE, is as good as anything he recorded in the late 70s-late 80s, as well as its predecessor, TRUE COMPANION. Bruce Springsteen and his crew were heavily involved in helping to make this one, but Grushecky's own authenticity still comes shining through, even, especially, on the Springsteen co-write "Code Of Silence", which here, sounds even more desperate for answers than when Springsteen recorded it. In fact, this version is so bitingly realistic that it can exhaust you to the point where you might just oppose shield laws for journalists on the grounds that the truth hurts. The other songs are also great chronicles of life in general, and even though Grushecky was raised working class and works as a schoolteacher, this CD could be just as relevant to the bank executive living in posh Cape Elizabeth, ME, or Lake Oswego, OR, as to the ironworker in Pittsburgh. In other words, these songs are so universal in their relevance that even people who have it made can relate to them, because money can't buy everything. This CD isn't for the teenagers; it's for the adults who've been through the wringer and lived to tell about it.

5 out of 5 stars An awesome CD from an awesome performer .......2006-10-19

This is one of Joe's very best. The lyrics are insightful and Joe's voice just gets better with time. And for those that have not seen Joe perform live, he is an awesome guitarist and it really comes out on this CD. Check out "Safe at Home". It also doesn't hurt that the Springsteen crew produced and mixed this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Grushecky's "A Good Life" is a great listen!!!.......2006-10-18

Veteran rocker Joe Grushecky is back with a new CD, entitled A Good Life. In an age where there's possible instant fame with TV shows and slick videos, Grushecky did it the old fashioned way: grinding it out in clubs and theatres over the years. Starting 25 years ago with his band, The Iron City Houserockers, Grushecky's always been part working class hero & part philosopher. It's a combination that has held up over time and this new CD is full of tunes that will make you think as well as crank up the stereo. Gary Borress, NYC

4 out of 5 stars Springsteen's Songs translate well.......2007-02-20

It's the people crying "blasphemy" who don't quite get it. Springsteen's lyrics (stories) are strong enough that they translate well into other genre's.

Of course they have a different attitude than they did as a rock tune, but folk, country & alternative are supposed to have a different attitude than rock. When listening to the folk & country versions of Springsteen songs, I hear words I never heard before, and the ones I had heard before take on a new level of meaning. It just goes to highlight exactly how strong a songwriter Springsteen is.

Actually, the least interesting tracks on this CD are by the folks who are, infact most like Springsteen in the style, people like Cafferty & Gruschecky; there you are forced into making comparisons.

1 out of 5 stars Blasphemy.......2006-01-19

I'm a fan of Bruce, but I've never cared for his voice, and I always thought he made some odd production choices. Someday, someone will produce an album of Springsteen songs that improve on the original. It would only take a little thought.

This mess demonstrates no thought whatsoever. Is there any reason anyone would be yearning to hear E Street Shuffle without the E Street Band and New York City Serenade without a the piano intro? Is there anyone who listened to Pink Cadillac and thought it would be great to have an acoustic version? A folkie version of Two Hearts? Did we really need to hear Elvis Costello put on a country twang?

What did they leave out? The Promised Land for the polka? A hip hop version of Mansion on the Hill?

1 out of 5 stars blasphemy.......2005-02-07

I'm a huge Bruce fan and have owned almost all of his material. A few months ago I heard the Clarks (another terrific band) cover of the River on the local radio station. I loved it I looked around for weeks trying to find it in stores finally a friend told me that it was released on a Springsteen tribute I found it and bought it. I regretted it. Aside from the Clarks cover there is not a single other song worth buying on this tribute. I mean come on Elvis Costello singing Springsteen get real. I guess Springsteen is about the only one who can sing his material cause almost none of these artists can I advise you to buy the originals and stay far from this blasphemy.

3 out of 5 stars Good music, Good cause, Good man!.......2004-12-24

October 28, 2003
Artist: Various
Title: Light of Day

I love Bruce Springsteen's music. As my brother-in-law once pointed out, "he writes about stuff that's happening in my life." The stature of a "great" songwriter is if the song can stand on it's own (sound good) when being performed by others. As noted drummer Gary Foster once said, "You can't swing a dead cat around here without hitting a tribute album."

This latest double CD tribute album to Bruce Springsteen, Light of Day, is a marvelous example of how a tribute album can be interesting and entertaining. Producer Bob Benjamin doesn't clutter the album up with half-hearted (boring) renditions by superstar names like most tributes albums. Instead he mixes up known artists with lesser known but talented artists which give the performances space to breathe and allows the listener to hear the songs 'new again.' Elvis Costello's version of, Brilliant Disguises, is excellent: Pete Yorn captures the essence of, New York City Serenade, and maybe, just maybe, baby boomers will re-introduce themselves to Britain's finest pub rocker Graham Parker with his acoustic version of, Pink Cadillac. Dan Bern, (formerly of Georgia Satellites?), smacks a bona fide homerun with his version of my favorite Springsteen tune, Thunder Road.'

While I would rarely recommend a tribute record to anyone other than a hardcore fan and collector, in this case Benjamin has put together an album which even the most casual Springsteen fan will be able to enjoy.

As if making a good album isn't sufficient, Benjamin uses this project to raise monies for victims of Parkinson Disease; as well as, for a friend and former employee of Springsteen that was struck down by cancer. As with most things associated with Springsteen, this album smacks of integrity. Now if we could just keep him away from Michael Moore life would be worth living! LOL

2 out of 5 stars They don't get it.......2004-06-12

Did any of the artists on this actually unserstand springsteens appeal? Most of the covers on this CD lack the passion, desperation, anger, bitterness and yet hope that Bruce delivers.
A few tracks, like Garland Jeffries cover of Philadelphia work, but must are disapointing

5 out of 5 stars Brings back memories!.......2007-02-17

I always enjoyed the Schoolhouse Rock spots on television as a kid. Now my kids are loving them, too. My daughter actually learned her multiplication tables by remembering the songs on these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars I love it, my son loves it.......2007-01-18

Talk about old-school, this is the very definition!! I never get tired of hearing the old songs. The DVDs are great, too.

4 out of 5 stars What's your function?.......2005-11-09

This collection includes all the songs that were written for Schoolhouse Rock. There is a lot of nostalgia here for those of us who grew up in the '70s. I enjoy almost all of the songs, but the ones that were added after i grew up have less appeal to me. The Multiplication Rock songs sound the best, since they were taken from the master tapes. Most of the other songs were recorded directly from the cartoons, so they aren't in stereo and they include the sound effects from the cartoons. This generally isn't too bad, but I find the abundance of sound effects on "No More Kings" to be somewhat annoying. One other minor complaint: the "Scooter Computer and Mr. Chips" songs are too dated. Computer technology advanced so fast that they were almost immediately obsolete. But fans of Schoolhouse Rock should still get this collection. To quote Lisa Simpson, "this is one of those campy '70s throwbacks that appeals to Generation Xers."

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2003-09-08

Anyone born before 1980 remembers the time when cartoons were only played during the day on Saturday mornings (before Nickelodeon, Cartoon Network and Toon Disney came along). Your Mom couldn't blast you out of bed before 7 a.m. on a weekday, but your internal 'toon clock got you up at 6:30 a.m. to watch Saturday morning cartoons. And inbetween shows, there was a brilliant little series of short musical toons called "Schoolhouse Rocks". Back in the days before Hooked On Phonics or Baby Einstein, these shorts taught multiplying, english grammar, history, and science, all set to fun music and cool blues tunes. In this clever boxed set, you get all four series on CD, averaging about 12 to 14 songs per CD. It's a reasonable price for a boxed set (around 45-50 bucks)and totally worth it! Even kids today know "Conjunction Junction" and "I'm Just a Bill", but haven't heard "Naughty Number Nine", "No More Kings", "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly Get You Adverbs", or "Tax Man Max". It's fun to listen to these songs and remember the words. I bought these for my kids to listen to in the car, and now a new generation is adopting them as their own. We love them, and so will you.

5 out of 5 stars School House Rocks and Scripture Rock sets.......2003-05-06

My 3 year old grandson enjoys this and all the SCHOOL HOUSE ROCKS CD's. I didn't have such wonderful educational tools for my children so I feel so excited to be able to give it to my grandkids. I have found another CD set that we are thrilled about called SRIPTURE ROCK and ROCK THE WORD. Both of these sets capture and keep a child's attention and imagination and when used together, give any child a well rounded foundation.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Grushecky Makes Another Great One.......2005-12-03

Joe Grushecky's CD TRUE COMPANION is GREAT! Most of his original band is back, and his voice is as good as it was in 1980, only deepened in resonance with time. The songs speak of survival, friendship, love, and commitment through times both good and bad, and seems to justify why people believe in life itself even when things go rough. In addition, Grushecky's belief that the young Australian tourist jailed in Indonesia on drug-smuggling charges was unjustly convicted makes this CD an essential purchase for your conscience as well as your ears.

5 out of 5 stars Hopefully a long way to go.......2004-05-11

Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers do it again. The eleven tracks on this disc rock harder than anything else released this year. The word on the band has always been "you have to see them live."

Well with this cd documents the sound better than anything they've ever put out. The songs give the band a chance to show off their chops and showcase their world class musicianship.

The disc kicks off with Long Way to Go. This song gives a brief overview of Grushecky's career culminating in, "Hell I'm only in my 50's, I've got a long, long way to go - hey hey hey."

The songs' sound evokes the Stones, Dylan, South Side Johnny, Van Morison, Little Steven's solo work, and other classic rock bands while sounded fresh and contemporary.

The cd returns to talk about those who have kept Grushecky company time and again - his friends, band and family. He even collaborates with band member Bill Toms on two songs and his son Johnny on two as well to keep the theme going.

Joe even includes his beloved Pittsburgh as a companion by updating Dirty Water (Pittsburgh you're my home).

After a seven year absence from the recording studio, the Houserockers release the pent up energy in songs that veer from genre to genre sometimes in the same song. Elements of punk, country, blues, hard rock, roots rock, pop, and even gospel run through this release. The return of original Iron City Houserocker Marc Reisman on harmonica has really moved the band toward a gritty rust belt sound.

For old fans, this is the cd we've been waiting for. For new fans this is a great place to jump on the band wagon.

Schoolhouse Rock owns the bragging rights to being the hippest musical vehicle to elementary education. Grammar Rock is a particularly compelling volume, bringing jazz vocal legend Bob Dorough to the lyrical table, untangling the secrets of the English language in a way that's both entertaining and instructive. The music is never less than humorously beguiling, comfortable in its simplicity and yet unafraid to dance outside the lines. Yes, the music sounds a tad manufactured, but this is the soundtrack for Generation X's early education. And, yes, this is a short CD--clocking in at 27 minutes--but it's not about length, it's about ideas. --Andrew Bartlett

5 out of 5 stars most excellent.......2004-06-16

this stuff still kicks my ass 30 years later. i grew up on these songs and was amazed a few years back when i heard them again - they are great!

a couple of notes: 'busy prepositions' and 'mr. morton' are recent LAME additions to this collection. it might be the original artists, but the new stuff don't work. why tarnish the perfect collection from way back when?

buy the cd anyway. the original songs are incredible.

also: whoever is posting "reviews" for all of these cds that are actually plugs for "scripture rock", you suck.

5 out of 5 stars Hey, Kids! Learns the rules of grammar while having fun!.......2004-01-26

When it comes to the rules of grammar I know the difference between an independent and a dependent clause and that is about it. If you want to talk about the building blocks of sentences I really do not even know the basics (you only had to go up and diagram sentences on the board if you were not putting them together directly and I was reading books all the time and sort of picked up correct sentence structure by osmosis, so I know how to fix sentences even if I am totally incapable of explaining the rules). Anyhow, the point of this meandering down memory lane is simply to state the obvious: Here are the basics. Learn that "A Noun is a Person, Place, or Thing," "Unpack Your Adjectives," and take a ride down to "Conjunction Junction." Also included are "Verb: That's What's Happening," "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly, Adverbs Here," "Interjections," and the immortal "Rufus Xavier Sarsaparilla" (no excuses if you do not know that last one is about pronouns).

"Schoolhouse Rock" was created in the 1970s, when an advertising executive noticed his son was having trouble memorizing his multiplication tables but knew all the words to rock songs on the radio. The marriage of pop music with information spawned a series of three-minute cartoons on government, history, grammar, science, and math that aired on ABC television from 1973 to 1985. This CD presents all of the "Grammar Rock" lessons, which are still pretty good even without the cartoons (but having the video of the cartoons is better). As long as the rules of grammar do not change (and they look like they are pretty much engraved in, uh, rock) then these ten mini-lessons are going to be useful to teachers and students alike.

5 out of 5 stars A "35" year old child!!.......2003-02-17

School House Rock is etched in my brain. These are tools I wish to share in the future with my kids. Saturday mornings in the 70's & 80's were fun as well as educational. I found myself looking forward to the breaks in-between cartoons to sing along with School House Rock. This series was especially helpful during tests. I would replay the jingles in my mind to help me to answer problems correctly!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Grammar learning tool! It worked for me!.......2002-07-19

Not much can compare with Schoolhouse rock for education and this is an excellent grammar collection.
Also check out the recent S c r i p t u r e R o c k for an updated take on Schoolhouse Rock, if you're into the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to internalize these concepts.......2002-01-18

Grammar Rock has some really good songs to remember the parts of speech and how to use them correctly. I think some adults would do well to be reminded, too, and these songs are clever enough for all ages.

The horn-backed swing of "Fireworks" will charm the ear of countless Gen-X listeners and their parents, as will most of this historically themed collection of songs from the ingeniously educational Schoolhouse Rock animations. Lyricists Lynn Ahrens and jazz vocal great Bob Dorough make fine yarns out of a (homogenized) overall narrative of the United States, which all seems pretty peachy in this context. This isn't a set to teach the nuances or vagaries of U.S. history, but "I'm Just a Bill" can leave kids in the single digits tracking the progress of legislation and asking what suffering and suffrage have to do with each other ("Sufferin' Till Suffrage") and inquiring about the Bill of Rights. The music is gentle but never silly or unlikable. Like that of the other volumes in the Schoolhouse Rock series, this CD's length is brief, but these themed packages seem to bear their pithy contents well. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Schoolhouse Rock! sings about U.S. history and government.......2004-01-30

All right, boys and girls, here is a little ditty that has got to jog your memory if only you are old enough:

I'm just a bill,
Yes, I'm only a bill,
And I'm sitting here on Capitol Hill.
Well, it's a long, long journey
To the capital city,
It's a long, long wait
While I'm sitting in committee,
But I know I'll be a law someday...
At least I hope and pray that I will,
But today I'm still just a bill.

"Schoolhouse Rock! America Rock" collects the soundtracks from the mini-cartoons ABC aired on the television in the mid-1970s and taught a generation of children about government and history (as well as grammar, science, and math in other rock counterparts). The ten America rocks are done in pretty much chronological order, with "No More Kings," "Fireworks" and "The Shot Heard 'Round the World" covering the founding of America, the Declaration of Independence, and the start of the American Revolution. I would be willing to bet that most of the kids in this country who can recite the Preamble to the Constitution learned it from "The Preamble" (or the "Star Trek" episode "The Omega Glory"). "Elbow Room" covers America going West while "The Great American Melting Pot" celebrates American diversity. Great American inventors get their due in "Mother Necessity" and "Sufferin' till Suffrage" covers women getting the right to vote. But the most popular one here has got to be "I'm Just a Bill," which explains how a bill comes a law in terms so simple that even a first term Congressman could understand it. "Three-Ring Government" explains the separation of powers between the three branches.

Granted, American History might not lend itself to 3-minute lessons as well as basic principles of grammar or mathematics, but these are still so much fun, especially if you have the videos to show students instead of just playing them these tracks on the CD. Too bad there were not more of these (how would Schoolhouse Rock! have explained the Civil War or the Great Depression?), because they are just a lot of fun and then do a great job of driving a few essential points home in each lesson. "America Rock" is just the hook. It is up to history teachers and parents to provide the line. Even for more advanced students teachers can get some mileage out of these by showing them to students and either getting them to critique these (what inventors should be added?) or to be creative and write the script for their own (e.g., "I am here to provide an explanation of the Emancipation proclamation!").

5 out of 5 stars Deserving of 5 stars.......2005-03-22

I saw Joe Grushecky and the Iron City Houserockers open for Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes 25 years ago. Last summer, I watched Joe open for the Jukes again at the Arts Festival in Pittsburgh. The irony was unmistakable - here were two artists who've grown, matured and improved. Grushecky (and Johnny Lyons, for that matter) never hit the heights many people predicted, but they both continue to make great music. This CD is filled with great songs - rockers, ballads, songs that make you want to turn up the volume in the car and sing along. Who other than Joe could work Kennywood Park into a song and make it fit perfectly? There's a reason every reviewer to date has given this a 5 star rating. It's rock and roll for people who aren't afraid of growing up.

5 out of 5 stars Joe Grushecky Should be up for a Grammy.......2003-02-20

This is one of the best albums i have heard in a longtime, with all of the garbage music out there these days , its refreshing to here a great straight up rock and roll album, I have just recently been turned on to Joe Grushecky, and man he is at the top of my list, the songwriting is just incredible. This guy deserves a hell of a lot more attention. I also had the pleasure of meeting the Man recently and he was indeed a Very warm sincere individual, who had no problem at all interacting and talking with his fans, One Very Nice Guy and a Hell of a Rock and Roller.

5 out of 5 stars Grushecky: A Survivor of Rock and Roll.......2002-05-22

Joe Grushecky's latest release "Fingerprints," is another fine effort from one of America's best singer/songwriters. This release will not be a disappointment to followers of the long time Pittsburgh legend nor will it be less than a treat to people unfamiliar with Grushecky's work.
This was Grushecky's first solo release as he took some long time friends and headed off to the studio. His band, The Houserockers, do not appear on the album but the group is still intact and are as solid as ever.
For people who are not acquainted with Grushecky, he was the long time frontman for the Iron City Houserockers, the critically acclaimed gritty street tough band from the late 70's and early 80's. His style is often compared to Springsteen, Mellencamp, Seger, Hiatt etc... in the sense of roots rock and roll combined with powerful lyrics and blistering guitar work.
On "Fingerprints," Grushecky shows some versatility but still remains true to his musical roots. The opening track,"You and Tonight" is a guitar oriented romp that will leave you on the dance floor or bouncing your head in your car--it's party rock with no apologies. Amazing guitar and vocals and the tune is getting quite a lot of regional airplay to boot.
Another personal favorite is "It's A Crazy World." Another guns a blazing rocker with some thoughtful provoking messages. In this song, Grushecky pleads, "the schools in our cities are deserted and dark---but we got enough money to build another ballpark." Heady stuff and not likely what you'll hear on the newest Limp Bizkit offering.
Other pleasures are "I Remember It" and "I Will Not Let My Spirit Fall." The former is a visit from the past of Grushecky's first musical memories and tributes while the latter is his ode to being a rock survivor and the courage that it takes to move on with integrity while not giving in.
Other highlights are "Talk Is Cheap" who Grushecky penned with his 13 year old son Johnny (a budding musician in his own
right) and "On The Wall." This track represents a true story about the Vietnam War and the struggles that we as Americans feel about it to this day. It is the most heartfelt song about Vietnam that I have heard since Springsteen's cult b-side "Shut Out The Lights."
All in all, Grushecky never disappoints and always delivers. I hope you will take the time to explore his music and to enjoy this new powerful statement. If you know this American original already, then you know this is another in a long line of great efforts from one of rock and roll's most underrated stars.

5 out of 5 stars Grushecky continues to produce intelligent rock n' roll!.......2002-05-11

The magic remains in this incredible offering from the leader of the world's greatest bar band. Joe Grushecky has been recording unbelievably good music for nearly a quarter century now. Like many of his more recognized peers, such as fan/friend Bruce Springsteen, he is making the best music of his career. Grushecky displays his full range of musical creativity in his debut solo effort, "Fingerprints." The diversity that is apparent on this fourteen track CD assures the listener of a new experience with each listening. Whether you listen to it on your home stereo or in your car, it will be one of your most frequently played CDs. New classic rockers such as "You & Tonight" & "Crazy World" will energize you. While, poignant ballads such as "That's All I Want From You" and "Rainy Day in Pittsburgh" will move and inspire you. The track "Lucky Man" is R&B at its best. "Easy Money" & "Talk Is Cheap" provide funky and driving beats that really mix up the tempo of the CD. This is a very balanced CD that the listener will not tire of listening to. There is not a weak track in the lot. This CD is an essential addition to any serious rock music collection. Grushecky's music has proven to stand the test of time, remaining relevant and contemporary. You won't be throwing this one away in the future - like those Hootie & the Blowfish CDs. Enjoy another Grushecky classic!

5 out of 5 stars A True Gem.......2002-05-09

Fingerprints is a wonderful album. The music, as well as the lyrics are great. There is not one clunker of the 14 tracks. The first 3 songs set the pace for the entire album. "You and Tonight" opens as a great rock n roll song, "I Remember It" is equally great ... and the title track "Fingerprints" is amoungst the best songs I've ever heard. This song reflects on all the people (lovers, friends and family) that have touched Grushecky through out his life. It is a song that very easily becomes relevant to the listener. The lyrics are tremendous. If you've enjoyed Joe Grushecky in the past .... this is a "must" album. If you haven't, not only will this album NOT disappoint, it will likely set you on a path to adding many of his other CD's to your collection. It really is great listening.

If you're a fan of blues based rock and roll, do yourself a favor and pick up this CD set. It's basically two CDs in one. One disc is all good ole fashion, in your face Rock-n-Roll and the other disc is acoustic demos of unreleased tunes from Joe's attic. In my opinion some of the tunes on this record are better than the ones that were previously released. One of my favorites is "Cigarettes and Gin". Great tune! It's also really cool to hear how these songs came to be. Some are similar to the offical releases but some are drastically different. Don't let the fact that you may have never heard of Joe Grushecky stop you from picking this up. It's well worth the money!
