Some Kind of Wonderful
Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
With a style that at times evokes Bonnie Raitt, Diane Schuur or Diana Krall, Parisian chanteuse Ilona Knopfler takes on some of the most popular tunes of the 60's and 70's on Some Kind of Wonderful, her debut for Mack Avenue Records. The CD opens with a swinging, sassy version of "Some Kind of Wonderful," which features a standout solo by guitarist Pat Kelley, best known for his work with George Benson. Knopfler's seductive phrasing adds an atmosphere of intimacy to the Zombies' chart topper "Time Of The Season," while on Neil Sedaka's "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," her passionate vocals are balanced by label-mate Eugene Maslov's romantic piano "This song resonated for me musically and emotionally," says Knopfler. "I can remember my mom singing it when she performed, and of course, everyone can relate to the pain of ending a relationship."
Knopfler's interpretation of "One," which was a Top Five hit for Three Dog Night in 1969, accurately echoes its composer Harry Nilsson's emotional paean to loneliness. Knopfler's rendition of "Something," George Harrison's first hit for the Beatles, remains true to the wonderfully melodic original. In interpreting Van Morrison's classic "Moon Dance," on which Kelley's and Maslov's sparkling solos play off her captivating vocals, Knopfler joins the ranks of some of the greatest interpretive vocalists of all time, including Michael Feinstein and Bobby McFerrin.
An equal influence on the elegant pop sounds of those two decades was Burt Bachrach, on whose classic theme for the film of the same name, "Alfie," Maslov's keyboards set a wistful tone that is echoed by Bill Armstrong's trumpet and sustained by Grammy winner Jimmie Haskell's string arrangement. Knopfler and band bring a Latin-tinged sensibility to "Unchain My Heart," first recorded by Ray Charles but which gained greater popularity as a result of Joe Cocker's rendition in the mid-80s. The singer and her pianist offer a strong performance on "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," which was also covered by Cocker as well as by Eric Burdon and the Animals. Knopfler gives a subtle yet powerful delivery to the CD's second Rod Argent tune, "(S)he's Not There," which launched the Zombies' to the top of the Billboard charts in 1964. Nick Drake's bittersweet "River Man" is treated with a quiet sense of respect, and the subtle interchange between Knopfler and her musical cohorts pays tribute to the Association's hook-driven hit, "Never My Love." The CD concludes with a tight rendition of the Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See."
Born in Paris, Ilona Knopfler was raised in a musical environment - her mother was a singer and her father her accompanying pianist. Her parents' gigs took them and their young daughter all over the world, eventually bringing them to Hong Kong, where, a six- year-old Ilona first took the stage. By the time she was fifteen, she was singing professionally as a back up singer for a rock band in Hong Kong. At that same time, she discovered the music of Diane Schuur and Al Jarreau. "I loved their freedom of expression and the fact that they were not afraid to use their voices however they wanted " Knopfler says. "I knew then that I wanted to express myself that same way." Her affinity for jazz led her to perform with small groups and big bands at the famous Jazz Club in Hong Kong, quickly becoming a house favorite. When she turned 18, Knopfler set off for New York City, where she lived for five years, studying at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute. "I think my life experiences, having been fortunate to live such an international lifestyle, has had a definite impact on my ability to embrace a variety of musical styles," says Knopfler.
Today, she lives with her three year old daughter Aiyana at homes in Paris, France and Atlanta, Georgia.
Album Description
On Some Kind of Wonderful, her Mack Avenue recording debut, Ilona Knopfler applies her distinctive vocal styling to season 13 classic hits of the 60s and 70s with a luscious jazz flavor. On songs such as "Breaking Up Is Hard To Do," Van Morrison's "Moon Dance," The Zombies' "(S)he's Not There," and the Marshall Tucker Band's "Can't You See," Ilona's soft and sultry vocals are bolstered by a strong supporting cast of players, including such jazz stalwarts as Dave Carpenter, Pat Kelley, Lenny Castro, and label-mate Eugene Maslov, as well as by string arrangements by Grammy-award winning composer and arranger Jimmie Haskell. Some Kind of Wonderful is just that - a wonderful introduction to a daring new talent.

While most '80s soundtracks offer collections of radio-friendly hits from haircut bands, the Some Kind of Wonderful soundtrack features quirky non-hits from bands like the Jesus & Mary Chain, Flesh for Lulu, and the Apartments. This delightfully non-mainstream soundtrack features Stephen Duffy's "Lonesome," the March Violets' unforgettable cover of the Rolling Stones' "Miss Amanda Jones," and Pete Shelley's "Do Anything." The highlight of the CD is unquestionably Lick the Tins' gravel-voiced, tin-whistle-driven cover of "Can't Help Falling in Love." Just listening to this CD can throw you into a John Hughes nostalgia tailspin that you may not want to come out of. --L.A. Smith

Some Kind of Wonderful to Your Ear.......2007-07-13
The CD is amazing. Every song is fresh sounding even today, a great mix between downright rockers and pretty ballads. The best part of all is that none of these artists are what you would call big names, most in fact are probably unknown to most of the music world. This just proves, when you dig a little, you truly can find buried treasure. This is a must have to your music collection!
Soulrevivor.......2006-02-15
This is one of the best 80's films and one of the best soundtracks, if you grow up in that decade you have to own this CD and buy the DVD.
Here is a classic example of Non-famous band music at his best, the only negative thing I have to say about is that they didn't include the Charlie Sexton - Beats So Lonely that play in the confrontation between Keith and Amanda Boyfriend at his House when Elias Koteas enters to fight and when Amanda and Keith enter the museum that plays Catch my Fall from The Hell raiser himself Billy Idol.
get it for furniture's "brilliant mind".......2005-03-22
there's a scene in the movie where a song is playing on a boombox and one of the characters walks over and presses "stop." No! I stopped the DVD and played those few seconds again and again to hear the song. it turned out to be furniture's "brilliant mind," a hard to find single from 1986 that made the british charts. it's an understated, moody, and sophisticated song in the mold of the lotus eaters, talk talk, late roxy music & bryan ferry, or seona dancing. it begins with a world weary lament: "I'm at the stage where everything I thought meant something seems so unappealing, I'm ready for the real thing but nobody's selling" the song portrays the stuggle to find life's offerings worthwhile, and to the advice everyone around him offers, the singer replies "you must be out of your brilliant mind." it's a masterpiece of romantic new wave crooning.
the rest of the CD also offers some hard to find songs that give a better sense of the depth of 80s music than your average 80s comp. especially great and rare is the song by australian group the apartments. the flesh for lulu, stephen "tin tin" duffy, and jesus and mary chain songs are also great. I'm not as enchanted by the march violets and lick the tins as others seem to be, but in just 10 songs this CD offers a nice corrective to stereotypical 80s comps (including other john hughes soundtracks).
"Totally awesome!".......2005-03-05
This movie was so good, but what really made this movie was the soundtrack. March Violets "Turn To The Sky" was amazing in the club scene! I definetely recomend this soundtrack, and while your at it, pick up the movie too!
Little known songs by little known artists - but still great.......2004-03-30
I love this CD and I especially like I Can't Help Falling in Love with You (why do I always like cover versions better than Elvis' orignials?). None of these bands were big in the 80s and that's odd for a John Hughes film. I always thought that maybe he was hoping one of these bands would make it huge based on their inclusion in the movie soundtrack. Alas, it was not to be. All of the songs are upbeat and different. One of my favorite soundtracks; second only to She's Having a Baby.

think again.......2004-01-21
If you thought that a CD with tunes like Breaking Up Is Hard To Do, Something, and Alfie is covered ground so to speak, think again. Ilona turns some of these unappealing oldies into sparkling, beautiful, beckoning works of art. If you need a comparison to nudge you to click the 'buy' button, how about a less flamboyant version of Jane Monheit on Breaking Up or Susan Tedeschi on Some Kind of Wonderful. She cherishes every note she sings, particularly at the end of a phrase where the last trace of her voice lands as gently as a mother laying a child to rest. With a jazz feel to the whole effort, this is very sweet stuff.
Very Cool.......2003-10-16
A very cool, crisp performance. On the pop side of jazz but a little swinging too. Ilona addresses the songs with respect and just the right emotional touch not frills. She has her own voice and doesn't copy anyone else's style. I look forward to much more from her.
Smokin' good time.......2003-09-04
This CD is great for putting on and laying back with a friend and cool beverage on a hot steamy summer night. The 70's have been brought back to life in seductive and smooth way.
It's a Classic.......2003-08-14
In this day of "over the top" renditions of classic tunes (ala "American Idol"), Ilona's spare performances allow the music to evoke new emotions. "Breaking up is Hard to Do" absolutely bowls me over. I couldn't imagine this song as a jazz standard. I stand corrected.
"Some Kind of Wonderful" will take it's place in the Jazz Pantheon.
I truly look forward to more work by this talented artist.
wow- this is a voice you'll remember.......2003-08-13
I am thrilled with Ilona Knopfler's Some Kind of Wonderful. You may be turned off by the fact that these songs are remakes but lay your skepticism aside and listen. I dare you to for I know you will soon forget any reservations you may have had to begin with and be charmed by this amazing talent. Ilona Knopfler manages to master what few artists can- she makes these remakes her own. She breathes new life into legendary songs. When Ilona sings them, they cease to be someone else's song and become her own. Many of these songs have always been favorites of mine but listening to Ilona Knopfler sing them made me discover them all over again. It is like having loved someone for years and then waking up one morning and realizing how truly wonderful he is all over again. Another reason, I think that makes Some Kind of Wonderful work is that Ilona has a gift of speaking with her singing voice. Many people have great voices and hit all the right notes but there is something missing. What they are missing is that you have to sing a song from your heart. Singing is like talking. You need the emotion behind it to get the point across. Ilona Knopfler is one of those blessed few that understand this and poors her soul into a song and makes whatever song she is singing her own. There is an honesty and sincerity to her voice and style that will work no matter what she sings. The jazz arrangements on this CD are genius. The average listener will appreciate this at face value but the serious jazz lover will truly find themselves impressed. Keep an ear out for this name! I think we'll be hearing a lot more from Ilona Knopfler in the future. I know I for one can't wait for her next CD!

I am a Huge Mark Farner fan. I was looking very forward to listening to my CD's and looking on the website here is appears that you get 2 CD's in one. I ordered Just Another Injustice/Some Kind of Wonderful only to recieve just Some Kind of Wonderful, This is not good business. I am not happy with Amazon
Thanks Mark.......2005-12-11
Of all the songs of mine that have been recorded, Mark's version of "Isn'T It Amazing" is my all time favorite. It was Mark who convinced me that, althought I had written the song about my daughter Jennifer's birth, the real inspiration of the song was God himself. His comment made me go back and look at the lyrics I had written. He was right.
I have recieved scores of moving letters with regard to this song, thanks to Mark's rendition. As a matter of fact, Im singing it live in church in Colorado Springs this Sunday.
The power of a song..the strength of a talent like Mark's..
This is what music is truly all about. Thank's for the ride, Mark. It truly is "amazing."

Mark's message measure's up !!.......2003-03-22
I have seen Mark Farner perform with Grand Funk Railroad on two ocassions. He is a bundle of energy and enthusiam. And with his solo album's Just Another Injustice and Some Kind Of Wonderful you will receive even more of Mark Farner. The Mark Farner with the power of God on his side. His vocals are full of strength, conviction and spirit. Just Another Injustice features a fine group of musicians plus the added benefit of Phil Keggy on lead guitar.Song favorites include "Airborne Ranger" a solid straight ahead rock n roller." Judgement Day Blues " True blues at its best." Isn't It Amazing " a beautiful song about the amazing power of prayer.Nice piano/keyboard arrangements!" Give Me The Works " a sentimental ballad which is written and centered around the acoustic guitar." Workin For The Winner " and " Just Another Injustice " both 80's style rockers. The ending song " Only You " shows Mark's song writing skills,a wonderful pop classic that in my opinion would do well on christain radio. My one complaint with this album is the electronic programmed drum mix.Real drums by a real live drummer would have added so much more texture/creativity. Some Kind Of Wonderful is the second offering on this compilation CD. This is the better of the two. What makes this better first and foremost is the use of a real drummer.Listen and you shall hear the difference. It also features superb bass guitar,Various back up vocals, excellent lead guitars and as usual Mark's powerful vocals.Favorite songs include " Love From Above " a funk rock explosion, with slap funk style bass playing, funky rythym guitar, funky funk rock drumming, sax solo's and hammond B3 organ sounds. " Some Kind Of Wonderful " A Great rendition reissue of the Grand Funk Classic.True to the original with some word changes giving us the message of a greater love. " Without You " A Powerful inspiring ballad.Mark really sings from his soul!! with heartfelt emotion and sense of purpose. " With Me Anywhere " his love is contagious in this one.His belief's shine through.Mark has written a wonderfully scripted christain rock ballad. My final thoughts: The music can be appreciated by all who listen but the christain message contained within can only be appreciated by those who choose to beleive.Whether or not, there is some Great music to be heard if you just keep an open mind. Two albums for the price of one.A Great musical bargain with some Great music. You can't go wrong." Enjoy "

FARNER'S BEST SOLO EFFORT.......2000-10-10
This is by far and away Mark Farner's best work to date. Grand Funk fans sould enjoy this CD. You do not have to be a fan of CCM to enjoy this CD. Mark Farner's voice is as strong as ever, his message is just a little changed.Buy it!! Enjoy it!! Good Stuff!!
