The Peacocks

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Tenor saxophonist Stan Getz's career as a producer for Sony Music came late in his overall career as a sometimes-troubled jazz veteran. The odd thing is that his personal troubles, of which there were some real doozies, never seemed to disrupt the music. And his second outing as a producer features some of the most unshakably calm stuff in his oeuvre. Getz's intent on Peacocks was to bring the underappreciated Jimmy Rowles to the fore, allowing the pianist to shine with his remarkable, long-lasting sense of balladry and seasoned, rough, romantic voice. Together, Rowles and Getz shine on several duets, including the wondrous, low-key swing of "What Am I Here For?" and the sublime flow of Rowles's "The Peacocks." It's not all butter, though, as Getz calls on drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Buster Williams to create a strong, supple quartet on a pair of Wayne Shorter numbers, "Lester Left Town" and "The Chess Players." The latter tune features Jon, Judy, and Michelle Hendricks along with Beverly Getz. Rowles knocks off a couple solo tracks, both showing off his reach--from swing era and Tin Pan Alley phrasing to hints of more daring execution. Through it all, though, Getz plays his heart out, milking every phrase for its musical core and the breathy shell just around the tone. It's a magnificent display, top to bottom. --Andrew Bartlett

Soundtrack buffs may know that this score to director Bertrand Tavernier's alluring jazz period piece inexplicably won the 1986 Oscar for best soundtrack instead of Morricone and his rich, enduring music for The Mission. That injustice aside, it remains a worthy collage of vintage jazz standards, new material, and contemporary performers, as filtered through the spirit of the story's main character (an amalgam of Bud Powell and Lester Young) and the '50s Paris jazz scene. It's also a tribute to Round Midnight musical director Herbie Hancock, with his crucial understanding that jazz--and especially bebop--can never stand on tradition, lest it lose its very reason for being. Thus he lets then-newcomer Bobby McFerrin loose on Monk's moody title track, gives vet Chet Baker's horn and voice a warm turn in the spotlight on "Fair Weather," and allows Lonette McKee and star Dexter Gordon to infuse Gershwin's "How Long Has This Been Going On" with some languorous, subtly sexual heat. Other highlights include a romp through Monk's "Rhythm-a-Ning," Hancock's tense, modernist "Berangere's Nightmare," and the spare, enchanting duet with Bobby Hutcherson, "Minuit aux Champs-Elysees." Remarkably, most of the film's music was recorded live on the set, giving it a compelling warmth and immediacy that's increasingly rare. This new edition features expanded liner notes as well as a bonus cut of the title track performed by Dexter Gordon's quintet live at the Village Vanguard in 1967. --Jerry McCulley

Amazingly good! Whether you're chating, reading your favorite writer, making love or just spending some time for yourself, this music will overwhelm you.

5 out of 5 stars A great jazz score.......2006-07-01

I'm not so keen on jazz music; however, I must say that this album is excellent, probably the second best of its kind after the all-time classic soundtrack for "Ascenseur Pour L'Echauffaud" ("Elevator to the Gallows"), one of the masterpieces by Louis Malle. The music here is certainly high class material: atmospheric, suggestive and wonderfully interpreted. If you're a jazz buff and haven't heard it yet, be sure that you've missed half of your life, so GET IT RIGHT AWAY!

5 out of 5 stars This album is the best!!!!!.......2006-06-15

I've never seen the movie and really, I don't have to. I love this album. I thought that it was very nicely done and it is so perfect. But really, it was the song "Round Midnight" with Bobby McFerrin that caught my ear. Listening to him singing that muted trumpet is sooo heavenly. So, I had to find this album if only to hear this song. It was a real treat that I got the other songs as well. "Fair Weather" by Chet Baker is another favorite of mine. I would urge any jazz lover to pick this album up. I guarantee you that you will not be disappointed.

4 out of 5 stars JAZZ ROUND MIDNIGHT: A SOUNDTRACK.......2005-05-26

This is an Original Motion Picture Soundtrack CD. The DVD of the movie is available but I would start here first. Maybe because one doesn't need to have the story told to you on wide screen and dolby sound. This CD is "intimate". Like the "Blue Note" it resonates lonesome nights in distant foreign places where the echo of the night is in Dexter Gordon's lingering Sax wail. Then perhaps none of that is important. Perhaps it's the compilation of so many jazz voices all in this one CD. While making this movie, Warner Bro could have bought rights to the Blue Note records as background. But it was important to give a fresh sound to the challenge of making a film about jazz. Warners turned to Herbie Hancock to develop the music background and Dexter Gordon to write compositions for the film. They did so beautifully without loosing the essential flavor or sense of place and time depicted in the film: Paris and the Fifties. If your interest is to develop or explore jazz music from the early 50s, here's your opportunity. Central to the background are musicians of the caliber of Chet Baker, Ron Carter, Billy Higgins, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hucherson, Bobby McFerrin, Lonette McKee, John McLaughlin, Pierre Michelot, Wayne Shorter, Cedar Walton, and Tony Williams. You can rent or buy the DVD. This CD will help you soak up that atmosphere now lost from places like the "Blue Note". In this CD you will hear the echo of the strains of 50s jazz normally heard "back then and round midnight". Listen to "How Long Has This Been Going On?" and "Una Noche Con Francis" and your heart will be lost. ps: I have the original vinyl LP version of "Round Midnight" and somehow, scratches and all, it's almost better heard this way.

5 out of 5 stars A great soundtrack.......2005-03-28

This soundtrack is an attempt by Herbie Hancock and his line-up of excellent jazz performers to evoke the jazz scene of Paris in the 50s. I have no way to judge how successful they were since I wasn't conceived until '63 and have never been to France, but I can and will testify that they have produced an enduring recording that I have never tired of in the many years that I have been listening to it. Bobby McFerrin demonstrates that he is much more than "Don't Worry Be Happy" as he does an amazing job of evoking a horn with his voice on the title track. "Chan's Song" and "How Long Has This Been Going On?" also leap to mind, but there really isn't a single clinker in the bunch.

5 out of 5 stars Mid-70's jazz ballad standard.......2006-06-22

A mid-70's jazz masterpiece!

This title has always been a jazz ballad hallmark, hailed by the '70s and '80s jazz critics, but now largely forgotten.

Rowles' relaxed style allows Getz and company to stretch out and explore the songs. "The Peacocks" is a minor key blues ballad that allows Getz to express his trademark mournful style. Lester Left Town is a classic Shorter hard bop song, and is a sample of the rich variety the bop composition could contain. (The other classic Shorter composition, the Chess Players, adds strange lyrics which have nothing to do with chess).

Hasn't dated one bit!!!

5 out of 5 stars A Must for Getz fans.......2002-08-24

This is a wonderful record, and anyone who is a fan of Stan Getz will enjoy his excellent playing here, with great company -- Jimmy Rowles, an idiosyncratic and charming pianist who was somewhat underappreciated because he spent most of his career on the west coast, and the greats Buster Williams and Elvin Jones. A couple of performances here are real classics -- especially "The Peacocks", a beautiful tune which was also performed by some other fine musicians for the soundtrack of the film "Round Midnight." My only quibble is the Jon Hendricks vocal additions on two tunes -- he transcribed two of Getz's improvised solos and overdubbed sung versions of the solos later, so it sounds like Getz and the singers are improvising together. I find the effect weird. And especially on this GREAT performance of Wayner Shorter's "The Chess Players" (why is this incredibly swinging tune not played more often?) I dearly wish I could hear it without the voices. If anyone from Columbia happens to read this -- there are many of us fans out here waiting for a re-release of this album with a bonus track WITHOUT the voices. What heaven that would be.

4 out of 5 stars A nice survey of American clarinet music.......2000-09-01

This is good overview of American clarinet music. Most of the pieces and movements are fairly short. The brief Gershwin Preludes (Heifetz's violin arrangement is superior but the clarinet sounds more appropriate) are a good opener. The other pieces range from straight classical to more jazzy.

I would give this CD 5 stars, but there are a few things missing. The lack of variety in tone color can make this CD a little monotonous. The conspicuous absence of something by Aaron Copland, one of the greatest composers for the clarinet (American or whatever) is also disappointing. His Clarinet Sonata would have made a good addition.

    5 out of 5 stars Swiss Skabilly!.......2004-08-16

The Peacocks is one of the best bands on the planet. Hailing from Switzerland, this high-octane rockabilly band started out with a ska tinge, and now are punkier, but they always - without fail - offer up tons of driving, catchy tunes with an appealing Scandinavian cuteness. You have to love a rockabilly band that rocks it out fast and loud without having to resort to acting spooky or sing about zombies and werewolves and crap. Another great set from these flawless rockers.

I, too, am a chamber musician. I first purchased this because I wanted to hear others' interpretations of these songs, having read through them once. After I first listened to this CD I sat there simply stunned by the musicianship, the technical brilliance and the heart and soul these musicians gave to this gorgeous music. If I had to give up all CD's but one, this would be the one I kept. As a result I have also been curious to know more about Mr. Loeffler, and purchased Ms. Knight's biography. This CD clearly opened a door and I'm grateful to those involved. *I'm glad one of the sellers has a reasonable price attached.

As a violist with friends who are singers, I am always looking for new repertoire. I was delighted to find these songs by Loeffler! The recording is fantastic- playful and dramatic as the songs call for, with a first-rate ensemble. The interplay between all the members of the group, their musicality, and technique really made me love this music and search for the scores.

This is really Getz at his best. The Peacocks rocks, and the Chess Players--I would beg to differ with my North Hollywood friend who wrote the first review--is the rockingest tune on the whole CD. It is a tip top solo, sung and played in flawless unison. Elvin Jones is altogether not a bad drummer, in my humble opinion...

5 out of 5 stars Stan gets credit, but Jimmie rules!.......1999-06-28

When Jimmie Rowles plays and/or sings, it's the real deal. He doesn't show off, he doesn't have to. He tears your heart out on "My Buddy" then parties on "Rose Marie". Jon Hendricks & Co. ruin "The Chess Game" with their sweet slick harmonizing, a mismatch on this CD. Just skip track 6 and all is good.

5 out of 5 stars Not bad for a Swiss band doing music with English lyrics........1999-09-29

I dig this band and I dig this album. The Pecocks have a good Rockabilly sound, due to the stand up bass. They also can do some good Ska when they attempt it. Now this is not really Ska-core, as the West Coast of America has that genre pretty wore out, rather it is a Euro-Ska sound that only Europe can produce. My only complaint is the voice of the singers is a bit higher than what I would like to hear in this music. I am not faulting him for his voice, rather I commend his ability to command the English language with a subtle Swiss accent. (which is why his voice sounds like he is about 18) I love this album and it goes right next to my Big 6, Guana Batz and Amazing Royal Crowns(still royal to the loyal!) songs. If you like a bit of Rockabilly, a bit of high energy Ska (think No Sports), and some skate sounding punk and you will enjoy this.

      4 out of 5 stars Quite Good,.......2005-09-27

I'm usually not a fan of rock/punk/psychobilly bands. Too often it feels that fashion and aesthetic take precedence while the same boring 3 or 4 chords are bashed out over and over again with some hackneyed silly lyrics about hot rods or aliens etc.

This is not the case with the Peacocks, who are very talented songwriters, crafting some very catchy songs with a fresh approach and a lot of passion. The songs are relatively poppy and a lot of fun to sing along to and they're all easy to relate to. Singing about relationships, friends and the scene without sounding whiny and are actually very uplifting and a little humourous without being saccharine or stupid. It's an album that puts you in a good mood pretty easily.

The musicianship is solid, no blazing chops and they're a little sloppy, but the playing is passionate and enthusiastic, the bassists is very good, in particular and I love the sound of well-played upright bass.

This is a happy album, it puts you in a good mood and you'll definately have a lot of these songs stuck in your head during the day. I would reccommend this album for fans of the rest of AMR's catalog (whom have probably already gotten this album...through them.) And for fans of early Living End, they're a bit mellower than the Living End, but they share their talent for finding really catchy hooks.

The Peacocks are back with another high powered cd. Not as good as "in without knocking" but still good.
