Companion [Live]
Editorial Reviews

In 1998, after releasing several critically lauded but commercially underperforming CDs, Chicago vocalist Patricia Barber struck a resonating chord with Modern Cool. Barber alternated a throaty vocal delivery and a more refined, stately approach to singing as she traipsed through genres with a strong, unconventional band that played to her strengths. More than anything, Modern Cool delivered an eloquent snapshot of what Barber would be like on stage, and now its follow-up, Companion, comes along to show off her chops in a live setting. Barber elected an old-time jazz approach to the live album, picking Chicago's Green Mill, a favorite haunt and home base for her, and let the tapes roll for a few shows in July of 1998. What you get is very much like Modern Cool: touches of pop turned to artsy poetry--in a most convincing way--on Sonny Bono's "The Beat Goes On" and a delightedly curve-ball reading of "Black Magic Woman," the Peter Green tune made famous by Santana. And then there are Barber originals, which she sends off expertly with piano and splashes of rough guitar paint and a whole-group clatter that's indicative of both the leader and her band's intimacy with these tunes. Like Cassandra Wilson and myriad others stretching the jazz singer's palette, Barber has made a deep cut in the tradition, without turning off any lovers of the traditional jazz lyric. --Andrew Bartlett
From Jazziz
Patricia Barber takes some chances opening her latest recording with Sonny Bono's "The Beat Goes On." Yet by the sound of the audience's reaction at Chicago's legendary Green Mill, the unexpected pop cover fits their expectations for Barber's quintet. Her cool, understated versions of Bill Withers' "Use Me" and the Santana hit "Black Magic Woman," along with four tasty originals, make for a nice sampling of her weekly windy city gig. Barber plays Hammond B-3 on several cuts. Her piano musings... read more

At long last, Lindsay Lohan and Meryl Streep sing on the same CD. Okay, so they don't actually duet, but both do perform on the soundtrack to Robert Altman's take on Garrison Keillor's popular radio show. (Keillor fans will know exactly what to expect, as the film is scrupulously faithful to his universe, and Keillor and his Shoe Band wrote a good deal of the songs.) As anybody who's seen Postcards from the Edge knows, Streep can really sing, and she sounds great in the rootsy, old-style country vein that makes up most of this soundtrack. Her rollicking duets with her screen sister Lily Tomlin, "My Minnesota Home" and "Goodbye to My Mama," are priceless. Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly are beyond crusty on "Whoop-I-Ti-Yi-Yo," which sounds like both an outtake from and a parody of O Brother, Where Art Thou?, while "Bad Jokes" is, well, just that. As for Lohan, who plays Streep's daughter, her version of "Frankie & Johnny" is a little shaky but heartfelt and kinda adorable. Purists, you can start hollering now. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Awesome Country Music.......2007-05-22
I love the music to this movie. The band is superb and the instrumentals are great!! The words are upbeat and heartfelt. It brought back wonderful memories of growing up and thinking of all my family and relatives. I only wish I could find more CD's that the band plays together on.
Excellent music!.......2007-05-12
If you like Bluegrass music, the soundtrack of the Prairie Home Companion is a must-have. I recommend watching the movie first and then getting the soundtrack.
Delightful.......2007-03-22
Nice to listen to. The DVD has a few, but not all, of the most entertaining songs from the movie.
A PRAIRE HOME COMPANION REVIEW.......2007-03-12
I bought the soundtrack since I enjoyed the music when I watched the movie. You can listen to the excellent deliveries of country music songs from Garrison Keillor,Woody Harrelson,Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin. In my opinion the best reason to buy the CD is to hear Meryl Streep and Lily Tomlin singing the "My Minnesota Home".They are just fantastic!Pleasant suprise is the well prepared DVD that complements the CD and contains some songs that you don't find in the CD.
The Marvelous Meryl Streep.......2007-03-09
This is a wonderful collection of songs, sung with warmth and heart - a true treasury of music.
The highlight has to be, though, the beautiful voice of Meryl Streep. Not only is she the world's greatest living actress, but she is a profoundly talented and gifted vocalist. Her grace, warmth, depth, and beauty give a gorgeous elegance - and eloquence - to the songs she performs. I challenge anyone to listen to "Goodbye to My Mama" without becoming teary-eyed. Streep is, in every way, quite simply...extraordinary.
A highly recommended collection of entertaining and touching songs.
Great album!

Four years after he took Elvis Costello's advice and bit the music/radio biz hands that have simultaneously fed and frustrated him for decades on the scabrous The Last DJ, Tom Petty returned to the studio with more personally introspective matters on his mind. Reuniting with producer/Wilbury sideman Jeff Lynne sans Heartbreakers for his third solo release proper, the veteran doesn't so much retool his trademark sound here as allow it the freedom to roam. The sonic landscape here is bluesier ("Saving Grace's opening shuffle, the haunting "Turn This Car Around") and more country-fried (the twangy energy of the blue collar lament "Big Weekend"), a return to familiar roots that produces subtly different results this time around. That sensibility now seasons songs as different as the stoned-elegant languor of "Night Driver" and the playful "Jack," where Petty and Lynn give a knowing nod and wink to the contemporary pop milieu. The stately, pop-perfect closer "Golden Rose" may lean on the Beatle-y side of their familiar sound, but it's a cliché the duo use both sparingly and shrewdly throughout, forging one of the veteran's most free-ranging and warmly satisfying efforts in a decade. Jerry McCulley

Highway Companion, Tom Petty's third solo album and first in a dozen years, is a timeless album about the passing of time. A constant companion on the road of rock n' roll, Petty, says Rolling Stone, is "rock aristocracy".

A discovery.......2007-07-12
An amazing record a bit melancolic though but loved every song. Big Weekend is very Wilbury-like. More more of it Tom !
More great work from a master craftsman.......2007-04-12
Ok, so Tom Petty isn't exactly wandering into new unknown musical waters very often these days. But he is still churning out very solid material with memorable, well written songs and tasteful, sonically stimulating production that really pulls the listener in. Just like his fellow Traveling Wilbury Bob Dylan, he is still a master craftsman doing what he does best. "Saving Grace", "Flirting with Time", "Damaged by Love", and "Big Weekend", are my personal faves, all of which fit nicely in his vast catalog of great songs. Tom, please go on tour again!
Good Title.......2007-04-04
Great CD for the car. If you enjoy Tom's other CD's you'll love this.
Good Stuff.......2007-03-31
The first half of the cd is as good as Wildflowers, but beyond that... Even Tom Petty can't save Rock And Roll. We're living in a time when the Billboard is dominated by sappy, wussy pop music, and hip-hop.... especially hip-hop. Sob sob
Awesome.......2007-03-25
This is Tom's best CD, by far. It is somewhat of a folk/country album, a departure for Tom. Buy this CD or you will die sad.

One of the Greats.......2007-06-09
Truly Five stars here, probably the Black Crowes' best album. Each song is a masterpiece, wonderfully written and produced. I'd buy it just on the strength of "Remedy" or "Sometimes Salvation," two of the most wonderfully- crafted rock songs you'll hear. But you also get five or six other classics thrown on top here.
"Sting Me," "Thorn In My Pride," "Bad Luck Blue Eyes," and "Hotel Illness" are all instant classics, and there isn't a dull moment on the whole recording.
A kind of breathtaking record, actually. Any gritty rock and roll fan will eat it up. It's on par with Exile on Main St or Physical Graffiti!
LORD OF MERCY!!!.......2007-04-05
Ok. So now Captain & Tennille don't make it as cutting edge rock and roll anymore. Ditto Olivia Newton John. Time for all you Yankees to get some sense and rinse the muck out of your ears. The South gave America jazz, gospel and rock and roll. This little album here just crawls with gators and kudzu. It tastes New Orleans. Burns like Atlanta. And it breathes clean like the Smoky Mountains.
Think your little piss-ant weinie art rock collection is so golden? Nothing but a Shirley Temple to this tumbler of Jack. Time to rock like a man on heavy testosterone. Time for women to strut a like an estrogen marinated Venus.
Guys, put on your dancin' shoes. Ladies, put that blue dress on. South is gonna rise again. Stand back and prepare to be assimilated. Resistance is futile.
THE BLACK CROWES' ANTICIPATING FOLLOW-UP TO $HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER........2007-02-13
I will be writing a review on the legendary album entitled "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION" by one of Rock's greatest bands. I give you one of America's favorite sons and one of Georgia's pride and joy's, THE BLACK CROWES. This album was originally released in 1992 on Compact Disc on the Def American Recordings records label in association with Angelus Entertainment. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary album or the artist, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.
During this period, THE BLACK CROWES were on a roll. The band was celebrating their newfound fame and fortune as a result of their extremely successful debut album "$HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER" from 1990. Their popularity was forever growing tremendously as a result of their growing fanbase and following resulting in sold out concerts everywhere they performed. The band was definitely enjoying the fruits to its fullest excesses that the good life has to offer. According to the Rock critics, lead vocalist and frontman Chris Robinson was being labeled as one of Rock's newest sex symbol's. Having accomplished all of these tasks, it was now time for THE BLACK CROWES or should I say, lead vocalist and frontman Chris Robinson, his brother lead guitarist Rich Robinson, bassist Johnny Colt, drummer Steve Gorman, lead and rhythm guitarist Marc Ford and keyboardist and piano Ed Hawrysch to head back into the recording studio and record the follow-up to their extremely successful debut album $HAKE YOUR MONEY MAKER." As a result, after a certain period of time passed, THE BLACK CROWES would complete and hand in to their record label Def American Recordings records, "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION." In my opinion, "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION" is a well recorded and balanced album. And yes, this album does kick a*s.
All I will say is if you really want to get down and Rock to the music of this album, listen to the Rockers such as "Sting Me," the breathtaking "Remedy," the soulful "Thorn In My Pride," the blistering "Black Moon Creeping," the killer "No Speak No Have" and the funkish "My Morning Song."
If you like Blues Rock ballads, listen to the songs "Bad Luck Blue Eyes Goodbye," "Sometimes Salvation" and "Time Will Tell."
This album does contain one Country Rock song called "Hotel Illness," this song sounds really good.
Overall, this is one hell of an album worth seeking out and checking into.
I would like to highly recommend purchasing this legendary album to own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This album will definitely stand the test of time and will always be around to be enjoyed, appreciated and cherished for many years to come, NOW AND FOREVER.
In closing, with the success of their follow-up album "THE SOUTHERN HARMONY AND MUSICAL COMPANION," THE BLACK CROWES would continue on the path to further fame and fortune. The band's continued sell out's of all their concerts is an indication that THE BLACK CROWES are here to stay. With this in mind, THE BLACK CROWES legend does not even come close to ending here. There will be new stories that would need to be conquered, told and written in pages and chapters about their glorious career. But that, my fellow readers and reviewers, you will have to stay tuned and read more about at a later time. So here's to you Chris, Rich, Johnny, Steve, Marc and Ed. Keep Persevering. Keep The Faith. Keep On Rockin'. And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY," am I wrong? Thanks for reading my review and I hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I enjoyed writing it for your reading pleasure. I also hope that you will read all of my other reviews in the near future when time permits. THE BLACK CROWES RULES. Long Live Rock n' Roll. Rock out always and take it easy. Forever In Rock, John L.
The Best Crowes Album!.......2007-01-14
There is literally not a single dull moment on this album! I can put this cd on play and just let the entire thing play. This album has it all; excellent vocals, great(alternately tuned) guitar work, fast songs, slow songs, and so much more! Not to be missed is an EXCELLENT cover of Bob Marley's "Time Will Tell" to close out the cd. All the other songs must be heard to believe how great this cd is. I used to think (and I think the majority of people still do) that the Crowes' debut "Shake Your Moneymaker" was better than this one. It took many years of listening to both albums for me to realize that this one had the slight edge over that one. "Sting Me" is one of my favorite Black Crowes tunes ever. Then there is the string of softer songs in numbers 3-5. These are probably my favorite part of the album. I don't like to give an analysis on every song, but I don't feel there is a need to here. They are ALL great songs. 10 songs = 10 GREAT songs on this one! Don't miss this album if you like classy, blusey rock music. Also recommended if you like this album are any of the Black Crowes' first 5 albums, though the first 3 are the truly great ones.
One of the best rock albums of the 90's.......2006-08-16
After the Black Crowes received mainstream success with their debut, "Shake your Moneymaker", the boys come out with a powerful blend of soulful rock. They also brought in highly skilled lead guitarist Marc Ford who sprinkles his guitar soloing magic all over these tracks. The brothers Robinson have also wrote a great bunch of songs from straight ahead rockers (sting me, remedy, my morning song, no speak no slave, and hotel illness) to two of their greatest ballads (thorn in my pride, and bad luck blue eyes goodbye). Throughout the album both Rich Robinson and Marc Ford show tremendous chemistry playing together, feeding off one another's playing they deliver an album jam packed for guitarist. Chris Robinson is not to outdone by singing some of the most heartfelt and soulful lyrics in the Crowes catalog. Steve Gorman pounds the drums like a man possesed reminicent of John Bonham. The Crowes decide to end the album with the only cover the band has ever recorded on a studio release. "Time will tell" was penned by Rita Marley (wife of legend Bob Marley), it's an acoustic jam that gives this album a soulful closer after rocking hard on the previous songs. This truly is one of the best albums to come along in the 90's. The Black Crowes are one of the few things still right in rock and roll, and it's never been more evident than on this album. Very highly recommended.

A Prairie Home Companion Original Motion Picture Soundtrack .......2007-03-22
Loved the movie and the CD is just as enjoyable. Makes me dance, sing along, at times sit in a rocking chair on the front porch and just dream . . . music reminds me of my younger, more relaxing days. My husband and I laugh at Bad Jokes every time we hear it. In fact, I'm going to put the music on right now to start my day just right.
Next best thing to the movie.......2007-01-21
Since VHS of the movie is not available, I had to settle for the CD.
Not hard to settle for!
Wonderful music.......2007-01-11
Thoroughly enjoyed the DVD but enjoyed the CD even more. Have played most tracks over and over again. Anyone who has watched and enjoyed PHC should enjoy this CD
Endearing Artifact.......2006-10-09
I loved the movie, and part of its charm is that it doesn't try to epitomize the institution it portrays by presenting perfect, canned performances. In the dialog and the music, both, you get the spontaneity and rough edges of live broadcast. For a soundtrack recording, that both works for and against it.
It was certainly nice to have the music in full ... During the movie itself much of it is only heard in the background, in snippets, or in passage.
Not every performance is treasurable -- "Red River Valley" is pretty pedestrian, and Jearlyn Steele's solo ("The Day is Short") didn't grab me either. Keillor's solo, "Slow Days of Summer," is a little homespun for even my tolerant tastes.
"Goodbye to My Mama" is one of the highlights of the disc and the movie -- a paean to motherhood touchingly sung by Meryl Streep, with Lily Tomlin offering scratchy harmonies. It starts as a lullaby, ends as a hymn. But their other duet, "My Minnesota Home," while performed with style (Tomlin's voice works better here), is an odd conceit -- Keillor has reworked the lyrics of Foster's "Old Folks at Home" a/k/a "Way Down Upon the Suwannee River," hijacking them north. Given his occasional sly jab at the South, this struck me as a little graceless.
It's wonderful fun to have the novelty numbers: 3 nifty commercials, and the zesty cowboy duos featuring the talents of Woody Harrelson and John C. Reilly. Lohan's number is a novelty, too, but it only makes sense in the context of the entire film; here it's a throwaway.
Apart from Streep's songs, the other standout vocal performance is the rousing "Old Plank Road" from Robin and Linda Williams! The eight instrumentals, all heard in the film, bridge the hodgepodge of vocal numbers with consistent excellence. These are études in jazz, blues, dixie, bluegrass, and ragtime. The band, through its crack musicianship and spirit of fun, comes across as a vivid character in the film. They are spot-on in capturing, or adjusting, the mood of the moment.
All in all, this is a CD worth enjoying apart from the film. I actually bought it first, and it was good enough to whet my appetite for seeing the movie itself.
Music and Humor - A Winning Combo!.......2006-08-26
What a treat to hear the memorable music, zany commercials, and smile-producing jokes! If you enjoyed the movie, your pleasure is going to double as you hear those familiar voices whenever you choose to listen!

Album Description
Highway Companion, Tom Petty's third solo album and first in a dozen years, is a timeless album about the passing of time. A constant companion on the road of rock n' roll, Petty, says Rolling Stone, is "rock aristocracy". The Special Edition features a leatherette board package including two postcards, and the audio features four bonus tracks.
Customer Reviews:
Bonus Tracks = 4 Stars.......2007-06-12
Ideally, the bonus tracks and demo tracks would have emerged as b-sides to singles or as an EP in their own right. One track, the demo of "This Old Town," surpasses the final version included on the original release. The bonus tracks "Home" and "Around the Roses" are quality additions, and better than most other bands' singles. The "Big Weekend" demo is less necessary.
If you don't own the album yet (five stars in its own right!), this is definitely the edition to get--the additional tracks are worth the extra dinero (although the "leather" packaging is slightly more of a questionable enhancement). But what if you already bought the original version? Find the added tracks on iTunes (if they're available...) or else wait for the used price of this one to drop significantly to, say, $8.98 or less.
Another great solo album from Tom Petty.......2007-06-11
I love Tom Petty's new Highway Companion Album, and I highly recomend buying this re-release because the two tracks that are added onto this version are excellent. If you like Tom Petty's last solo album Wildflowers you will love this album. It can be played all the way through without skipping tracks and it never gets old. In fact I find a new favorite every time I listin to it. Definitley a more mellow Petty but he is at the top of his game with the lyrics. A must buy!
Blame the record company..........2007-06-09
Just to throw this out there... This isn't Tom's fault. I doubt he would have done this to his fans. Afterall, we know how vigorously he defended the price of CDs with 'Damn the Torpedoes.' (Threatening to title it $8.98 if they increased the price to $9.98).
Here's what I'd do. Buy the Special Edition for yourself and give your original Highway Companion CD to a friend or family member... get them into TP. Then everyone wins (although unfortunately that includes the record company too).
Musically Great, but I expected more from Tom.......2007-06-07
What happened to The Last DJ Tom? The Tom Petty who made a point in Houston in 1992 that all the signs at the Woodlands had nothing to do with him. Times are a-changin' when the artist starts double dippin'
Record Companies = Organized Crime.......2007-06-06
Record companies mirror the Sopranos more than legitimized business. Doing such a thing with a group such as the Beatles makes a little sense because the band is deceased. "Buyer beware" is the phrase that fits regardless of what "deluxe" edition you purchase.
To me, the original Napster is really Robin Hood......steal from the rich to give to the poor.........

Just what the title promises........2007-03-29
Just received this CD today, and it's definitely wonderful background for reading; however, don't limit it to that. If you just need some time to close your eyes and unwind, this is also the perfect companion. Love it!
Real Relaxation.......2007-02-19
If you're a fan of Philips's Set Your Life to Music series, you'll want to get this CD. It will be especially good for string and piano music lovers. I have several of the series, and it has quickly become my favorite. It's perfect for reading, studying, or just "kicking back." If you know of someone who needs to relax and would like this type of CD, get it for him/her. You'll get major points for it.
The gentle side of Beethoven.......2005-08-10
If you know anything about the composer Beethoven, what often comes to mind is music that is highly dramatic and often loud, whether it be his hard-driving piano music banging on the keyboard or a full-blown orchestra (like Beethoven's Fifth Symphony with its famous, ominous opening, "dunt-dunt-dunt-da.") The point is that typically most of Beethoven's music demands to be heard, contemplated and emotionally processed.
But this is not the case for the Beethoven music on this CD. There was another side of this fiery composer - one that revealed a tender-hearted composer capable of very calm, lovely and song-like instrumental music. And it is this side of Beethoven that is captured in the nine very serene and lyrical selections on this CD. What is great about this compliation of Beethoven music is that many of Beethoven's most sentimental and beautiful slower movements have been "cherry picked" and grouped into one CD that is MUCH more condusive for leisurely listening (no loud banging on the piano or surges from the huge symphony). The music is pure Beethoven talent, but these selections do not demand to be heard and serve well to create a wonderful backdrop for relaxing, reading or late-night entertaining. Sometimes the music is so calm in one or two movements it seems to lack forward movement but - given its purpose for background music - this should not be objectionable.
The music on this CD features mostly piano and violin duets (termed violin sonatas) along with two inspiring string quartet selections and one famous piano/violin/cello song. By the way, this kind of music with a small number of instruments is called "chamber music." The violin/piano selections are very well chosen from the legendary recordings of violinist David Oistrakh and partner Orbinin - musicians known for their more relaxed playing of Beethoven and beautiful tone - all of which is perfect for such a "book reading" CD. (Other performers of the same music tend to put more "edge" and drama into these songs which can be more distracting for leisurely pursuits). All the music is touching and beautiful - with only a few of those typical loud Beethoven "surprizes" amist the quiet bliss - although there are some brief shifts to minor-key anguished tones at times that might disrupt some readers concentration.
Perhaps the highlight of the CD is one of the very last string quartets Beethoven wrote before his death - years into his total deafness and ill health (track 4). In this slow and sublime movement can be heard the most personal and spiritual aspects of this great composer. It is played by one of the greatest string quartets in history (Quartetto Italiano) with a deeply touching sentimentality. Listening to it, you can sense a man who has suffered much but who has come into a final rest and new depth of spiritual awareness at the end of his life. It was his final "swan song" and is surely one of the greatest and most poinant compositions he wrote. All-in-all, this CD is a very high-quality set of inspiring recordings that make not only for calm background music, but also for moments of introspection and growing musical appreciation. The non-techical music notes included give a helpful and interesting background on the music and composer. The sound quality is fine and not distracting in any way. A beautiful introduction to Beethoven's chamber music (for 2-5 instruments) and one you can listen to often and most any time.
Relaxing and soothing.......2001-11-29
When you can't recognize a Bach from Beethoven composition like me, this works perfectly. Once again Phillips as assembled a wonderful group of sonatas, trios and quartets to soothe the spirit. These songs are all slow and tranquil, perfect for those quiet moments when music is not to be intrusive but inclusive. Phillips has a whole line of classical music composers brought together with various themes such as this one. I've found them to be extremely convenient. Highly recommended for those that like their music softly at times, gently caressing the grey matter between ones ears. This music can tame even the most combustible moments. It recently was playing while discussing an issue that my teenage son and I were miles apart on. It seemed to help keep cool heads. I think I'll suggest a title like Tchaikovsky for Teen and Parents Issues since Phillips is open for themes for future discs!
a great way to appreciate beethoven's music.......2001-08-13
Some of Beethoven's most relaxing and tranquil music is included in this wonderful cd. Whether you're reading your favorite novel, doing homework or simply relaxing, this cd provides soothing background music, helping to enhance your concentration. There are no loud trumpets and such blasting, since it is basically peaceful music.

Editorial Review.......2006-11-06
"The success of the New Age compilation Pure Moods in early 1997 led to the release of Celtic Moods later in the year. Like its predecessor, Celtic Moods is essentially a New Age collection -- here, Celtic is code for mystic. A few songs, such as the Waterboys' 'Strange Boat,' adhere to the earthy spirit of Irish folk, but much of the music -- including cuts by Clannad, Loreena McKennitt, Ashley MacIsaac, Sharon Shannon, Mary Black, Altan, Christy Moore and the Edge & Sinead O'Connor -- is atmospheric and ambient, evoking the mystical elements of Celtic music. In other words, if you're looking for true Irish folk, go elsewhere -- the [sic--this?] is New Age music with vaguely Celtic overtones, and if you are a fan of that style, there's no better compilation available than Celtic Moods. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide"
Celtic Moods is a good CD........2006-03-20
Celtic Moods is a really good CD. I like it alot. But then again I like anything IRISH. I've lost this CD a few times over the years and this is probably the 3rd time I had to buy the CD and I have no regrets. My favorite song on the CD is probably Ashley MacIsaacs Sleepy Maggie. Awesome song.
WOW!.......2005-11-13
Copared to the other pure moods celtic moods brings you music from Ireland,Scotland & wales
Good CD to add to your Celtic Music Collection .......2005-09-28
I have this CD, and enjoy it everytime I get the change to hear it. I am a huge fan of Celtic music, and this is a perfect CD to add your Celtic music library. This is an album that all Celtic music fans should have. Other Celtic albums you should try out are : Scottish Moods, the Christian "Eden's Bridge" collection, and the Celtic music from Lifescapes at Target.
Another Perspective.......2005-02-15
I have to hand it to the people who compile these CD's for keeping this one real. It is an unfortunate thing that "Celtic" culture has become associated with the New Age movement. Unfortunate because so often what is referred to as Celtic sometimes is so in name only, not to mention the fact that I can't tell people about my passion for it without getting some who roll their eyes. I am pleased to say though that aside from the packaging this is a collection that passes muster as it contains artists who are no less than the genuine article. Granted, Loreena McKennit is Canadian, but she has proven a strong dedication to the genre and when coupled with the likes of Paul Brady, well, let's just say his is a tide which lifts all boats. I recommend this along with any of the Celtic Twilight series as good introductions to this style of music.

If the people at Nimbus are smart, they'll do a whole collection of discs on this theme. The literary-musical connection is, when done tastefully, as it is here, irresistible. As the intelligent and interesting notes maintain, "London at the time of Jane Austen was one of the most exciting centers in all of Europe for music," and this was an era of great fertility of composers in general. Lucky Jane! Imagine publishing your second novel the same year that Beethoven's Seventh Symphony receives its premiere. Or offering your fourth novel to the public near the time of the first performance of Schubert's Fifth Symphony. The program highlights popular music from Austen's time by Mendelssohn, Haydn, Fasch, J.C. Bach, Boyce, Schubert and others. I find the exclusion of chamber music a little odd here, though, since chamber music was the rage among the sort of gentlemen and women of the country about whom Austen wrote so well. --Gwendolyn Freed
