Concepts [Box set] [Original recording remastered]

Frank Sinatra's Capitol albums, cut between 1953 and 1961, comprise one of the most important bodies of work in the history of American pop. Collected in the newly repackaged 16-disc Concepts box set, they prove no less moving and revelatory than when they initially appeared. In his late 30s and 40s when the records were made, Sinatra brought a new sense of shading to his music, ensuring that each set held its own niche on the emotional and sonic spectrums. The revered ballad albums, for instance, range from the rueful (In the Wee Small Hours) to the near-suicidal ("'Scuse me while I disappear," from "Angel Eyes," is as definitive a moment on Only the Lonely as the more well-known "One for My Baby"), while the string-quartet backing of Close to You and the revival of the wittily sad-eyed '40s nugget "Why Try to Change Me Now" on No One Cares deepen each LP's meaning. At the same time, Sinatra slyly celebrated romance and its conventions on the likes of Songs for Swingin' Lovers! and A Swingin' Affair! The latter in particular plays as both an invitation to the floor (except when it's explicitly not, as on the raised-eyebrow "I Won't Dance") and the personal statement of a man who makes both the utterly passionate ("Night and Day") and the utterly wiseass ("I Wish I Were in Love Again") fly.
Finally, the inclusion not only of the Sinatra-conducted instrumental set Tone Poems of Color but of a number of otherwise currently unavailable vocal discs in Concepts makes the box something of a must for those who'd fully dig this fully dig-able run of creative genius. --Rickey Wright

Album Description
The Tranquil Harp consists of eight Celtic harp improvisations for relaxation, meditation and integration. The music was improvised, and recorded live in a concert hall without any added reverb or effects. Each track is in a different key, correlating with the frequencies of color and the energetic centers of the body. The pure harmonically rich harp sounds played at a slow regular pulse encourage alpha wave activity in the brain, resulting in greater relaxation, clarity, focus and concentration. Practical exercises are suggested for each improvisation to assist in physical, mental, emotional and spiritual integration. These improvisations were created on a Dusty Strings FH-36B Celtic harp made in Seattle, Washington.

Healing music.......2007-02-22
Whether lying in bed and reading, driving my car in stressful moments, or just relaxing, the Tranquil Harp provides a wall of wonderful sound that can soothe and center me. Paul Baker has a tender touch, and his improvisational style is beyond compare.
Tranquil harp for babies.......2006-03-21
Paul Baker's improvisations are inspired and beautiful. We use his recordings with high-risk premature babies at the local hospital, with outstanding results. The babies are soothed by the stabilizing tone and rhythms, relaxing their heartrates and improving their overall condition. I have started giving this recording to new parents as a baby gift. I use it myself on stressful days. Thank you Paul!
Soothing the Mind.......2006-03-20
I love this CD and the "Ladder of the Soul". Beautiful composition. What a way to escape.
My Heartfelt Review for "The Tranquil Harp".......2004-05-23
I am continually amazed by the healing power of music. Especially harp music. As those who know me know, my healing from a debilitating stroke came about in large part due to the improvisational healing harp of one man: Paul Baker.
Mr. Baker is such a talented person. He could have chosen to record albums using his vast knowledge and technique on the large and impressive concert harp, piano, or organ. However, for posterity, he chose to record improvisations for healing on the smaller and more personal celtic harp.
How does one capture the essence of such music in words? His two albums, "The Tranquil Harp" and "The Ladder of the Soul" are groundbreaking in their simplicity and breadth. And each one has its own unique place in my life.
"The Tranquil Harp" helped me most in my physical healing. Its music is very basic, simple, and gentle. It has brought, and continues to bring, growth and strength to every part of my physical being. To play it is to bathe in regeneration and light.
"The Ladder of the Soul" continues this healing on the emotional and spiritual planes. It connects our essence to the divine in such a way that we emerge purer and more aware of our true being and purpose in this life. This is real health. Divine health. What a gift to be brought to us by one man. This album is so aptly named as it proves that the harp truly is "the ladder between earth and heaven," connecting us to the divine safely and lovingly.
Thank you, Mr. Baker, for sharing yourself in such a way that allows all of us to unfold in ourselves and in the world with true happiness and peace.
Not sure I agree with the across the board 5 stars.......2004-05-12
I have several meditation CDs including some other ones that use harp music. I found this CD to be uninspired. The music is soothing in a boring way. It certainly is not my favorite. I personally like the 4 CD Global Meditation series put out by the Rainforest Alliance the best.

Rhythms on Parade, a revised and expanded version of an earlier album, is one of Palmer's most inspired collections. Catchy tunes encourage kids to sing, play, and march along, while Palmer skillfully uses pitch, tempo, and rhythm to reinforce his lyrics. In "Roller Coaster," for instance, tempo and pitch vary to conjure an image of a roller coaster slowly climbing a hill and then rushing down the other side. Palmer sounds comfortable using a wide variety of sounds (including a children's chorus, percussion, keyboards, strings, and woodwinds) in a number of styles (ballads, jitterbugs, and country, among others), which should delight most any child. Rhythms on Parade is an easily accessible study of rhythm that will leave both parent and child humming long after the music stops. --Tami Horiuchi

Good CD for kids.......2007-06-14
This CD is lots of fun and has plenty of movement activities that are explained in the CD insert. My kindergarten students have enjoyed it as has my 3 year old at home. Hap Palmer's voice is soothing for kids and not annoying to adults.
Excellent resource.......2007-03-11
This CD is an excellent musical resource for the preschool classroom. I have used it for years with my Nursery 3-4 children. It gives a variety of musical themes. Everyone loves to "Stuff it in the Closet"
Great for preschool teachers........1999-05-07
I have used this CD for a couple of years with my preschoolers and they all respond positively to it. It is all I need to teach rhythm instruments to my students. I highly recommend it.

Beautiful throughout. Mr. Baker, your music is wonderful. I feel totally peaceful while stretching the morning. It' time for another masterpiece.
beautiful music, beautifully played.......2005-03-30
Lovely music, not only played with great skill by Paul Baker, but also music whose heart and sincerity of compassion shines through. Not overly simplistic like some massage music, but rather with real musical interest and beauty.

Band leader/pianist Stan Kenton is known for his superheated, shouting brass sections and eccentric conceptualizations for big bands, and this 1952 recording shows why. The set opens with "Prologue (This Is an Orchestra!)," in which Kenton delivers a spoken-word explanation of the unit's purpose and introduces the members to the listener. The star-studded lineup includes Lee Konitz and Vinnie Dean on alto saxophones, Richie Kamuca and Bill Holman on tenor saxophones, Bob Gioga on baritone, five trumpets (including Maynard Ferguson), five trombones (including Frank Rosolino), and Sal Salvador on guitar. The CD reissue contains four additional tracks not on the original release. --John Swenson
Customer Reviews:
An Old Friend.......2005-02-04
Just found Kenton's New Concepts in Artistry in Rhythm after a long search. It's like renewing a friendship with an old friend. In my opinion the Prologue is a classic and the entire album is wonderful. I guess I just don't agree with those who said Kenton didn't swing. Maybe I'm one of the "cult" members (never been a cult member before!) or just maybe Stan, even many years after his death, is still so far ahead of his time (as I believe he always was) that there are many who "just don't get it."
Guilt-Free Kenton.......2004-02-09
A controversial, marginal jazz figure to some (Kenton barely rated a mention in Ken Burns' 20-hour jazz series on PBS) and a giant who attracts cult-like devotion from many others, Kenton's career from 1941 to 1979 provides plenty of musical evidence for all hypotheses about his originality and influence, not to mention the perennial question of whether he "swings." Of all his recordings, "New Concepts" is the most non-controversial and perhaps the most musical. The emphasis is on fresh, swinging mainstream jazz influenced by the innovations of Bird, Miles, and the beboppers. I can think of no other recording by Kenton, and perhaps by any other musician, that features so many great arrangers and players--from Bill Russo and Bill Holman to Maynard, Rosolino, and Lee Konitz. In fact, in the company of these cutting-edge arrangements and inventive solos, the inclusion of a "pretentious" Kenton production number--"This Is an Orchestra," narrated with great dramatic flare by Stan himself--is a welcome bonus.
The band of 1956 ("Kenton in Hi-Fi" and "Cuban Fire") proved to be Stan's most popular ensemble, but musicians and serious listeners will want to pick up the 1952 "New Concepts" album first. With this one in the collection, you might be forgiven for indulging yourself in Kenton's 44-piece Innovations Orchestra as well as the garish but bracing Wagnerian textures and brassy brilliance of the Neophonic and Mellophonium ensembles that would come later. I won't tell anyone (especially since at the moment I'm luxuriating in the sheer sonic sensuousness of the trombone choir on Stan's "Here's That Rainy Day").
Vintage Kenton Well Done.......2001-11-20
I have been looking for Prologue this is an Orchestra for quite a few years. I was excited to find such a well produced album. I have enjoyed every song on it. This takes me back to when I saw the Kenton Orchestra in 1955-6? in Detroit. This CD is all that I expected and more. Roger Curavo St. Petersburg Fl
Stan Kenton Must.......2001-10-19
This CD is an intimate portrait of one of the best bands ever. It's a "MUST" for any Stan Kenton fan. I never tire of hearing it.
Kenton haters should listen to this one.......2001-03-29
After emerging from his psuedo-symphonic fling, Kenton assembled a hardbodied, swinging (detractors take note) band of phenomenal soloists who were equal to the sometimes overtaxing arrangements. There are some astounding performances here, and those who like to say Kenton's band didn't swing should take another listen to this session. From a jazz perspective, this is probably Kenton's best and most lasting album

Sleeper of the Year.......2007-01-18
I gave this album to one of my friends and it almost convinced him to forsake all other hip hop genre's and start listening to Christian Hip Hop. Solus Christus was the best album of the year and is still hot!
you must get this album.......2006-02-02
Solus Christus is unlike any holy hip hop album there is. I have heard no one who can match Shai's rhyming ability (ok, maybe Redcloud)but no one can rhyme AND represent Christ like shai does. Every song/beat/musical style on the album is simply top notch, even the intro and outtro's are must listen to tracks. I've listened to this CD hundreds of times, and it's still fresh every time. I reccommend this cd not just to Christians, but to music lovers in general. God bless!
Shai is truley blessed!!.......2005-12-11
Hey ya'll.. I just wanna say that this CD really represent Christ, the way hip hop should be. Lyrical Theology at it's best. Great beats by DJ Essence, and good collabs by Steve and Phanatik(Cross Movement), and Evangel(Christcentric). I got this CD along with Tim Brindle's Killing Sin, and these dudes are blessed by the Holy Spirit. If you like philly music, jazzy/hip hop stuff.. get this CD. it is a must have!! Grace and Blessings
Another Winner for Holy Hip-Hop!!!!!.......2005-10-11
Here is another CD that I love!!!! Totally awesome!!!! Scriptural based lyrics are on point!!! If you are a lover of Hip-Hop you must have this CD, and especially if you are a lover of Holy Hip-Hop, consider it a blessing to support this guy's ministry and you'll be blessed from the CD as well. I will proudly recommend to all, and have no problem loading it on my 4 kids MP3 player!!! Get this one and Timothy Brindle together, and you will be jamming for a while!!!!

You MUST get this!.......2005-09-16
This one hit the bullseye! I scooped this CD at Rapfest in New York and popped it in the CD player on the ride home. Needless to say, I listened to it all the way down to DC!!! Shai Linne has accomplished a goal that Holy Hip Hop has been somewhat (not all the way) lacking...that is...masterful and Godly lyrical skills over excellent production and tight beats. No cosmetics, no fluff, shai linne's style of praise to the Lord is what true christians who are true hip-hoppers have been looking for. I even played a few cuts for some secular rap artists and (no lie), they whipped out some money and offered to buy it from me right there on the spot. All...this is a must have for your collection, it'll make any non-Christian hip-hopper want to get saved! This album is one of the top 3 in my collection, including Christian and secular music. 5 STARS!!!

Goofy! But the kids love it!.......2007-01-06
I wanted to start using more music to reinforce concepts and practice fluency in my second grade classroom. These songs are a little goofy and folksy, but darn it if they're not catchy! Some of the rap and hip-hop learning tunes available seem hokey to the kids, but they get into these ones. My students beg to hear "Homophones" and other tunes from his CD's. I have all of them and I catch the kids humming the songs or practicing their fluency by reading the words (I made charts and booklets). I even heard one kid singing "Even or Odd" to determine the answer on the test.
I don't know if it's actually helping or not, but my class is a lot more fun for all of us!

Correction.......2007-05-30
Nothing needs to be said about the quality of these recordings. However, the CONCEPTS box set has been re-released in the spring of 2007 with new packaging and is no longer available in the wooden box pictured and described here. The new slim, cloth-bound set holds the individual CDs in two small book-like boxes, without jewels cases and seperate booklets (just like The Complete Reprise Studio Recordings). The accompanying book seems to be the same in terms of contents, if not cover design. I hope Amazon manages to update their editorial review soon to prevent people from expecting something completely different after spending this much money.
Great Investment.......2007-02-24
I bought this collection of Sinatra for my 90 year old blind father. It has brought back so many memories for him: I have heard stories about the courtship of him and mom, stories of his military service, and many more stories about his life . . . all sparked by hearing "Blue Eyes" sing a certain song. A family friend came over and upon hearing some of the music, told a story of going into NYC on the subway when she was 11 years old to see Sinatra perform live. In reliving some of these memories, I have been able to glean some very key information in my geneology research. I'm so glad I got this set for dad.
An awesome collection from the Chairman of the Board.......2005-06-17
For me, it began years ago when I bought the abridged, "best of" compilations from each of his label periods. After awhile, what I had wasn't enough, and I have since forked out the cash for his Columbia (wood) box, and now this beauty, "Concepts". For those like me years ago, you simply have no idea what an embarrassment of riches is to be found inside this masterfully crafted box. Disc after disc of amazing work from one of the all-time legends, you will not believe your ears it is all so amazing. Now, I cannot speak to the issue of whether the sound quality is as good as it should be according to some of the other reviews for this, but it seems like a few titles seem to be missing some sonic "ooomph". Overall, I cannot complain too harshly. It's worth every penny. Buy one before they sell out, you won't regret it.
Some of the Best Recordings Ever Made!.......2004-06-24
If you are a fan of Sinatra's music, this collection is well worth the price. You will not be disappointed; this collection is a musical masterpiece. With arrangements from Nelson Riddle and Billy May, Sinatra's voice has never been better.
These albums represent what have been referred to as the first "concept albums". Rather than a miscellaneous collection of songs, the albums have been carefully constructed to set a certain "mood". The collection consists of upbeat "swing" albums as well as records featuring the ballad or, in the words of the Chairman, the "saloon" songs. A Christmas album as well as an instrumental album is also featured in this set.
If you seriously love "the Voice", you'll love this collection.
the best of the best.......2004-03-04
I do not actually own this particular box set, however, I own every individual cd it includes, with the exception of the instumental one. In 1991, when I was 21 and found out how great Sinatra was in his prime, I began purchasing all of the 1987 cds of his classic Capital LPs. If you can afford it, go ahead and get this set. If you can not, do as I did, and buy them all gradually, starting with A Jolly Christmas(If you like Christmas Music and it is around the Holidays). After that a good order to go in would be - Wee Small Hours of the Morning, Only the Lonley, Songs for Swingin' Lovers, A Swingin Affair,Come Dance With Me, Songs For Young Lovers/Swing Easy, Nice and Easy, Come Fly With Me, Where Are You, No One Cares, Close to You, Swingin Sessions, Come Swing With Me and Point of No Return . Throw in two Reprise cds for concept purposes, September Of My Years and Ol blue Eyes is Back, and try to get the Reprise box set, and even the Capital Years from 1990, 3 disc set which contains many songs not placed on LPs

Hap Palmer is a master of entertaining and teaching children with music. Can a Jumbo Jet Sing the Alphabet? overflows with fun songs that will have your child dancing along while he or she encounters themes such as vocabulary, shape recognition, problem solving, spatial awareness, numbers, and cultural diversity. Included in the liner notes is an extensive teaching guide, which lists skills and concepts, vocabulary, lyrics, suggested activities, variations, and follow-up questions for each song. These notes are a great resource for daycare or school instructors as well as parents, and, when implemented in moderation, can add another dimension to the listening experience. Palmer's original songs are diverse in style and are accompanied by strings, percussion, woodwinds, keyboard, vocalists, and even a children's chorus. --Tami Horiuchi

Looking for "different." Look no further!.......2006-01-14
I have this CD and Can a Cherry Pie wave goodbye for my 3 1/2 and 15 month old and we LOVE it. The instructions are clear and gives the children enough time to move to the action. They have learned so much and are having so much fun while learning. Sometimes, I will pause the cd to give them time to answer. We do not listen to the cd from front to back, but I select 2-4 songs to listen to a program them into the cd player so that the kids don't get bored of it. The music is great (no rock or rap that preschoolers and toddlers cannot understand), but not your average Toddler CD.
We Love the title song as it teaches early phonics and recognizing that words start with a letter. I don't turn to the CD to teach my kids everything, but use it as a supplement to my teaching.
disappointed.......2005-08-28
I was looking for music that will help my students learn the sounds of the alphabet but to my disappointment there was none included in the album. Anyway, I said it was ok cause because it teaches about other things too like shapes, letters etc. But I was just not inspired by the music. It was not as lively as I expected and it sounded like country music to me. I know the type of songs that will really get my kids excited and this is just not it.
These aren't your run-of-the-mill songs!.......2005-04-12
I am always looking for innovative Childrens Music CD's and I was excited to fall upon this real gem. As you can tell from the title, Hap Palmer has a great sense of humor and imagination. I like music CDs that don't have the same ol' kid songs that we all know and have heard again and again. Instead, I like exposing my children to a lot of fun new songs. Not only are they more interesting to listen to, but I love to see how fast their great little memories can learn these new songs. You get everything in this CD! Part of the songs are pure fun and the other part mix fun with learning.
Some of the great fun songs include the title song "Can a Jumbo Jet Sing the Alphabet," "What Could a Bean Bag Be," and "The Compost Bin." His learning songs teach shapes, sound blends, and rhyming. I love "Letters in the Blender" and "Fun with The Rhyme Time Band" as well as "Jig Along Shapes" and "Action Fraction."
As you can see from reading the titles, these aren't your run-of-the-mill songs. Hap Palmer has a great talent at creating songs that are interesting to listen to and fun to dance with. This hour long CD is definitely worth it and will quickly become your family's favorite tunes! --Denise Steele-Darnell
Highly Awarded Early Childhood Music Pioneer.......2004-01-11
Hap Palmer has been honored with many awards for his music for young children. He is a pioneer of pairing movement and music, and integrating basic educational ideas into music. His music interests me as a parent.
So my family and I have made a point of listening to his music, mostly by loan through our local library. Unfortunately, we do not like his musical style or voice very much. Most of his albums are not singable or melodic. I praise Palmer for making music that is good for childen and not like most commercial "junk food" children's music products that are on the market, but we just don't like most of his songs.
"Can a Jumbo Jet Sing the Alphabet" is one of the exceptions. The songs are interesting and fun to listen to. We like this CD. Plus, the messages are good for children, like most Hap Palmer albums. Thumbs up!
RECOMMENDATION: I suggest that parents start with CD's by Raffi. Then consider this CD. Hap Palmer's music is especially valuable if you use it to interact with your child, such as moving and thinking. Palmer's music is quality.
Can A Jumbo Jet Sing the Alphabet?.......2001-01-25
I am a volunteer storyteller for two year olds at the local library. After story time we danced to "Everybody Dance" and "The Bean Bag". The children and the parents were so excited when we finished that they broke out in cheers! I'm ordering my own copy of this CD today and so are a half dozen other parents and caregivers!
