Perpetual Emotion

Though her voice cracks occasionally and sounds ever slightly lower in pitch than when she reigned in the 1970s, Flora Purim is still one of the finest jazz vocalists around. Why she has not recorded since 1994 is a bit of a mystery, but Perpetual Emotion shows that the Queen of Brazilian Soul is still on top of her game. Expressive, engrossing, swinging, and rich in tonality and nuance, Purim's instrument remains sensuous and soaring as she interprets the work of Chick Corea, Antonio Carlos Jobim, and McCoy Tyner with consummate instincts and style. More of a straight-ahead album than the Brazilian jazz fusion of her classics, Butterfly Dreams and Stories to Tell, Perpetual Emotion also features the songs and percussion of Purim's husband, Airto Moreira. His drumming and evocative percussion were the springboard for some of her best work, and the magic is still there (even if his drumming lacks its '70s fire). Their "San Francisco River" opens the album in a breezy mood, followed by a sweet reading of Kurt Weill's overexposed "My Ship." Perpetual Emotion really starts to groove with Flora's return to bossa nova on "Saudade." The subtle, sinewy rhythm is perfect, as is Flora's fragile, wonder-laden delivery. She gives so much of herself in each bar that it's sublime.

At 3:02, "Saudade" is too short, but it's followed by another Brazilian classic, Corea's "Crystal Silence." Again, Flora's treatment is beautiful, drawing you in note by note, as the song moves from rubato intro to yearning verses with bubbly instrumental flourishes. Jobim's "Fotographia" is another high point. With guitar and arrangement by Oscar Castro Neves, the song swings lightly around a glowing vocal choir and Flora and Neves's sparse vocal. Almost five minutes into the tune, Airto's samba groove lifts off and the magic comes down--Flora's interaction with the choir and Airto's drumming make for an exquisite moment. "Airto's Jazz Dance" briefly revisits "Spain," featuring some high-flying improv with Flora scatting, growling, and vocalizing like in her work of yesteryear. Perpetual Emotion closes with the intimate "Carinhoso," a lovely duet between Flora and guitarist Castro Neves that shows the singer in all her gleaming, slightly shy glory. Welcome back, Flora! --Ken Micallef

5 out of 5 stars In perfect harmony!.......2001-11-08

Not much to add to the previous review except to remark on the fantastic sensitivity all the musicians on the wonderful record exhibit towards each other. The more I listen to this, the more I am struck by the fact that whether Flora is singing or someone else is playing a solo, the other musicians are all doing EXACTLY the right thing behind them. Apart from its artistic/inspirational qualities, it is a long time since I heard anything quite this well crafted.

...in fact, it may be her best work ever. I love it!

3 out of 5 stars Very Good Renditions.......2001-03-10

I've never really listen to Ms. Purim prior to checking this out, but I must say that it makes me want to pick up a few of her earlier efforts. The arrangements are accessible and calming, lending themselves especially to novices to jazz. I will certainly put this one on when I want a positive and sociable vibe!

5 out of 5 stars Familiar songs in an unfamiliar venue.......2001-02-23

On the heels of the last few releases from Flora and Airto, you might be surprised to discover Perpetual Emotion is a vocal album very much in the jazz standard tradition.

Flora has recorded at least five of these songs before (it's at least the third time for San Francisco River and Escape), but make no mistake -- you've never heard them like this. Flora relies less on vocal effects (as she has in the past)or on the virtuouso pyrotechnics of her band mates, and more on passionate, flawless renderings of great songs.

Airto is subdued in a way that is appropriate for this venture, but gets to break loose with a burning drum solo on Airto's Jazz Dance. Flora is also backed by Fourth World bandmate Gary Meek on sax and talented newcomers to the Flora/Airto camp, pianist Christian Jacob and bassist Trey Henry. There's enough Brazil in this CD (particularly on Fotografia and Saudade),to satisfy long-time Flora and Airto fans, but with compostions by Ira Gershwin and Kurt Weill among others, this will also make fans of traditional female jazz vocalists sit up and take notice.

If this is not essential Flora, it is certainly fair to say you haven't heard the full breadth of talent she has until you've heard this CD.

5 out of 5 stars ProgJam At It's Best!.......2007-04-11

This is a great album from start to finish. They were really into a "Groove" on this well recorded release. It's just too bad that their newest release of 2007 didn't follow up this excellence, as they went instead with an overly written, shorter cuts, which really all sound the same. Guys go back to your roots. Your first 2 albums were excellent... and do remember that "All Is Everything".

4 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing..........2006-06-28

This band is one of the most amazing that I've ever seen live. I went to a concert having no idea who they were or anything, but after the first couple of songs i automatically fell in love with them. Having heard them live, this cd was amazing and the only reason anyone should have for not liking the cd is not having heard them live. if you get the chance you should go.

the bartender at the concert was saying that although he normally hated all the "hippie jam-bands" that came through, that this was the only one he liked and he liked them a whole lot at that.

5 out of 5 stars Great Pick-Up.......2005-09-14

This album is fantastic. Not to mention this band rocks serious face!!! This as well as their first album have become staples in my everyday musical listening. The musicianship and on-stage chemistry is unparalleled by any current quartet. You can tell these are four classically trained musicians that apply their skills to song-writing and jamming that enhance and blend their sound in a unique way. If you like dancing at a live show or even by yourself in your living room, get this album!!!

5 out of 5 stars Groove Perpetually, Perpetual Groove.......2005-08-29

Yes, I agree, you do have to see them live to REALLY appreciate them. However, I know people that have fallen in love with their sound alone. I saw them in Charlotte, NC in early 2003 at a tiny venue & they were one of the best bands I've seen live (& I've seen a lot)! These guys know real music & they can totally jam together! See them live & you will undoubtedly appreciate them. If you can't see them live, they may be an acquired taste.

1 out of 5 stars Perpetual Yawn.......2005-07-01

I should have paid closer attention to bat hunters review since he gave it away when he said; "It took me listening to this disc about 5 times before I could really start enjoying it all the way through." Heck, I was lucky to make it all the way through the first time! This release is extremely repetitive and simplistic with lame lyrics and just plain bad singing. Now, if you enjoy bad singing with real musicianship, then I highly recommend The String Cheese Incident.

While I mean no offense to anyone, this band comes no where close to the direction of King Crimson or Pink Floyd.

As a former radio DJ who specialized in jazz/rock fusion and jam bands and appreciates great music and musicianship, I find this release has absolutely no sustenance to sink your teeth in to and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

With a name like Perpetual Groove, I expected a lot more. A jam band they are not.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Awesome!.......2003-09-08

I've waited a lot of years for this GREAT singer to give us something new and I guess in a way 50% of his new CD is new and 50% of it are older songs of his that are re-done. I recommend this CD to all who want to hear an unusually "different" voice when nowadays it seems like most of the new acts in country all sound the same. I was fortunate enough to see him in concert about 10 years ago. If he ever comes this way again I'll be first in line to buy my ticket! Give us MORE Earl!!!

4 out of 5 stars Doesn't Anybody Have this LP?.......2001-11-13

How come Earl Thomas Conley doesn't get any reviews? Just doesn't seem right. I've had this for quite some time, though it was tough to find. I only became aware of the CD because a friend has several co-writes on it. I'm not sorry I bought it; really has some nice cuts and it's a real nice change of pace. Good job.
