For the collector or the late-night melancholy Sinatra fan.......2007-01-23
The pluses and the minuses:
PLUSES
- Frank's voice: a little aged, a little raspy here and there, but still powerful, mighty, experienced, time-worn and evoking a "been there, done that, seen it all, had it all happen to me..." feeling
- Unusual collection of somewhat obscure songs not found on any other Sinatra recordings, except for one or two, allowing for examination on how Frank interprets the new and unknown - standouts: "Gal That Got Away/It Never Entered My Mind" (best track), "Long Night", "I Loved Her", "South - To A Warmer Place" (itself quite unusual in its musical structure, with unexpected melodic and chord jumps, as well as rhythmic pauses, etc. which Frank handles with smooth mastery)
- Superior arrangements, perfect for the mood of the album
- The yellow shaker-knit sweater and the "Members' Only"-style jacket on the cover: 1981 era style, retro! And smoking?? So last century!
- Late-night lights-off, candles alight, red wine in hand (or JD if you want to do the real Sinatra thing), saloon Sinatra at his best
- Frank's last studio album: a must-have for that reason alone
MINUSES:
- Hard to find! Recommendation: buy the 1995-issued "Complete Reprise Studio Recordings" from eBay or Amazon. You get the equivalent of 20+ albums plus many unreleased singles in excellent remastered quality.
- Period recording techniques somewhat distracting: the reverb employed makes Frank sound like he's singing in the shower in some places
- Unusual repertoire offered may make Sinatra fans feel wanting for more, also very short LP if you could even find it
- Those used to the "Come Fly With Me" Sinatra will wonder what happened to his voice and bravado; this is Sinatra at his moodiest, for the experienced Sinatra fan or collector
Probably the best Saloon Song Album ever..........2006-12-19
This album, is, without doubt, one of Sinatra's greatest albums. The mood is excellent, perfect for that late night listening with the lights turned down low and a Jack Daniels in hand. I love the cover of this album, Sinatra is at a bar in a saloon, holding his cigarette and having a drink. It really sets the mood for this album; I love the sight of the smoke too, great shot. I just wish Sinatra had recorded more albums like this in his later years, there were so many songs that he hadn't recorded that he could bring more life to...
I was lucky enough to pick this up at an old record store last year for a few dollars, the original vinyl, in excellent condition. They want over a hundred dollars for it on eBay and amazon.com.
The only complaint I have about this album is that the 10th song wasn't included. That song was "Everything Happens To Me," which, I think is one of the best songs Sinatra ever recorded. It makes me cry every time I hear it. Don't let the title confuse you with Sinatra's 50's version, this is a complete different song. I can't help but think that it was written for him, it had to be. The emotion he exerts on this song is enough to put tears in your eyes. If you haven't heard this song, you MUST seek it out. It is required listening for any Sinatra fan. I believe it is on the Complete Reprise Studio Recordings collection. I have no idea why they didn't include it on the record, I'm sure there was room for it; it would have summed the album up nicely.
"The Gal That Got Away," is much better than his 50's recording...but I still prefer the version Frank sung on TV in the mid-60's with Count Basie at the Hollywood Palace (I think). Would have been nice if he recorded it with Basie on the Sands album as well.
This is a very moody, and dark album, and you just may need a box of tissue at hand to listen it. The orchestrations are excellent and the arrangements are top notch.
a delight for Sinatra fans.......2006-06-14
if you're looking to buy your very FIRST Sinatra recording, this is NOT the one! why?? b/c it's out in left field really. the songs mostly obscure, but all the more enjoyable b/c of it. plus, it's late career FS. some of the vocal power that so impresses in the 50s and 60s is diminished by 1981. but the flip side is the depth of feeling, the beautiful pathos, genuine mourning in the vocals on this torch songs collection.
i swear to you that i have to keep pulling the needle back every time to listen to 'thanks for the memories' and 'the gal that got away' again and again. 'hey look no crying' too. well, even others, but let's just say it's well worth tackling once you have already consumed the majority of the frank catalog and you're looking for yet another variation on the man. i've sort of worked my way through from the 50s to 60s, then 70s. now this. the last hurdle will be the war years records, which haven't yet caught my ear. but one never knows.
is this really a 5 star FS? not entirely sure, but in terms of effort, commitment to a theme, consistency of emotion, i'd say yes. it is really really worth hearing. i had no idea there was no CD version. i've had this on vinyl for a while from the thrift store. don't let the tasteless yellow sweater on the cover fool you, this is legit FS.
THE LAST ONE.......2006-02-12
FRANK SINATRA BOWS OUT WITH HIS FINAL NEW STUDIO RECORDING ON THIS ABSOLUTE CLASSIC,"SHE SHOT ME DOWN". THE COVER AND THE TITLE OF THIS RECORD IS ENOUGH TO SEND ANY SINATRA FAN ON HIS WAY TO FIND THIS GEM. THEY SHOULD START TO RENAKE THIS CD AS USED COPIES GO FOR OVER $ 149.00 ON EBAY AND AMAZON.COM. I PURCHASED 3 COPIES YEARS AGO AT A MUSIC STORE AND THE GUY ASKED ME WHY I WAS BUYING 3, I TOLD HIM," I HAVE A FEELING THE RECORD COMPANY IS GOONA PULL THIS ONE BECUASE IT DIDNT REALLY SELL WELL AT THAT TIME" HE LAUGHED AND SAID,"YOU THINK YOU STROKE GOLD OR SOMETHING THE WAY YOUR SO HAPPY PAYING $ 15.99 EACH,. I TOLD HIM," IM THRILLED TO BE PAYING $ 15.99 EACH" 15 YEARS LATER WHO HAS THE LAST LAUGH......
A brief but emotionally strong album for grown ups.......2005-09-15
This album is for those that like the slower , more reflective side of Frank .
When he sings ' regrets , I've had a few ' in My Way , these songs seem to be about those particular regrets .
It is an album about loss and frustration , but also about acceptance of loss ..the dark side of love .
Like other reviewers , I also hope it is released again .
It is a shame to be denying so many of Frank's fans the chance to hear it .
Try to find the vinyl album first if you can .
I hope you manage to hear this affecting record .

Like anyone will ever see this plea. If you see this CD anywhere, buy it-if for no other reason than you'll be able to hoc it on Ebay for 100.00! The Old Man still had it. A stripped down saloon song album, simply outstanding! Why wont Frank's family &/or handlers re-release this?!?! We dont need anymore "best of"'s sold at Starcraps, er I mean Starbucks! The true fans deserve better. We deserve pure musical product, remixed / remastered / good liner notes. Babs, Frank Jr, Tina, Nancy, Reprise(Ree-prize, as Frank used to say), get this one out there at 15.00!
