Gino Vannelli - These Are The Days.......2007-05-30
The man still has it! This CD is a perfect demonstration of his growth and flexibility. Although his old music is classic, he has also dispensed new material in the opera and jazz genres as well. My favorites on this CD are "Venus Envy", "Right Where I Am", and "It's Only Love". These should receive much more airplay than they do. Its too bad Mr. Vannelli's music is still as underrated as it is!
Gino's latest...... " These Are The Day's ".......2007-03-20
This album was released in fall of 2006 and for me I have been playing it every day. The first half of the CD - 7 tracks - is new material and show Gino's range of writing skills, just like his last album Canto from 2003. The reason that I gave it 4 stars out of 5 is I was disapointed in the second half of the album. They are older songs from past albums which would have been OK had he put a new spin too them. I know from watching a DVD about the last album Canto and his mind set about what all the album was too be about, that he had a slower version of "I Just Wanna Stop". It was live on stage with the full orchastria and showed his openness to rethink a song in his past and make it sound new. So I was hoping this would be on the CD but sadly it was not to be, but still a good listen of your time. I have been a dedicated fan of his work since 1976 when I saw him live and I have every album and half of his concert tour DVD's, so I know a little about his unique sound.
Mellow fun tunes.......2007-01-08
Finally something new from one of my favorite artists. The new stuff is quite good, kind of jazzy and fun, but still not as great as some of my earlier favorites. Generallly upbeat, great vocals. Should be liked by most Gino fans.
He's Back!!!.......2006-07-27
Yes, we all know half the CD is "old stuff." Whatever- I'm paying for the new stuff. "It's Only Love" is probably the hippest thing he's ever done. A guy trying to be cool about getting dumped, "excuse me while I go off and die." You have to listen to it over and over to catch everything. "Venus Envy" would be my second favorite. Its message is great- why do women feel they need all that plastic surgery?
"Great Divide" is so sad, so full of that realization that, "Oh, boy, I have really screwed up my life."
It's also great to hear his voice sounding as good as twenty years ago. So many singers really lose range and force as they age. No, he's not going to hit those "Fly into this Night" high notes. He's 54, okay? But, with this release, I think Gino can really get the spotlight back on himself, gain better backing, and really come out with some terrific stuff in the future.
new good, and old still good.......2006-07-13
the only thing about this cd that is bad is all the songs were not new, but Im glad for the new 6 and they are really good.
they are not the old sound from the 70's but they are good .
he has gone a new way on some of the new songs and they are very
good with a little twist here and there with a sound he has never done before which is good seeing this is 2006, I hope tho that he goes on tour to sapport this cd cos he would sell a lot more if he did.Is this something your need to have ? Yes!

On Sea Music, former Del Fuegos frontman turned kid's music songster Dan Zanes performs a set of old sea shanties in a rough-hewn but charming manner. He takes songs that have been worn smooth from constant use, artfully scuffs them up, and restores them to their former "ragged but right" glory. His performance of "Shenandoah," for example, features some fine Leadbelly-style 12-string guitar picking and an anguished vocal that almost erases the memory of the polite, formal choral arrangements that usually smother the song. And his "Sloop John B" sails along on jaunty banjos and mandolins rather than the slick harmonies of the Beach Boys' version. These shanties were originally created by sailors as work songs, and consequently they have choruses that are perfect for singing along. Zanes is joined on many tracks by an enthusiastic chorus of kids who are obviously having a wonderful time belting out the sometimes salty lyrics. As with all of Zanes's recordings for children, adults are likely to find themselves listening to this wonderful music even when the kids aren't underfoot. --Michael John Simmons
Customer Reviews:
On any list of great "kids" CDs you will love too........2007-03-28
My personal favorite of DZ's "kids" records.
This one *is* great for sing-alongs with the kids, but is a fine old timey record of sea songs that can be enjoyed by anyone. Loose-limbed versions of "Shenendoah", "Sloop John B" and "Cape Cod Girls" are fine and fun.
"Strike The Bell", "Blow Ye Winds", "Leaving of Liverpool" and others are fun sing-alongs as well as good history lessons. My 3.5 year-old and I enjoy this record equally.
It's particularly nice that Zanes' website has the lyrics AND chords -- really helps extend the listening and playing pleasure. I also appreciate that DZ doesn't dumb down the music for kids at all -- you get a real feel of the folk tradition of handmade music here.
great for kids, great for adults!.......2007-02-27
for a fun cd of classic sea shanties, and a kids' cd that you won't get sick of, this is the one. we've given this to many kids (2 and up) and all parents have been very thankful! we've had it for 2 yrs. and we listen to it all the time.
favorite.......2007-01-10
This cd stays in our car stereo for weeks and weeks. We sing a long and our 3 yr old likes it too.
Disappointing.......2006-06-01
I like anything to do with the sea and I bought this CD on the strength of the glowing reviews. Having lived in a port city in England that hosts an annual Sea Shanty festival, I was fortunate to hear some of the best shanty singers around. I had high expectations for Dan Zales and was sorely let down. The music is basic and unpolished, which should be a good thing. Shanties are supposed to be raw, gutsy. But the quality of the music here is downright amateurish -- merely a sing-a-long with the children in the kitchen. I wanted more for my money.
Great CD for kids and adults.......2006-03-29
I played this CD in the car while taking my great granddaughter (8 mos) to work yesterday. The songs were so irresitable I found myself singing along, even with chanties I'd not heard before. Then, from the back seat, I heard loud cooing and chortling noises in a little voice. Morgan was singing along too. Guess this CD is a hit with everyone.

Always an effusive pianist with a relentlessly melodic approach, Benny Green celebrates Blue Note's 60th Anniversary by culling eight tunes from the label's back catalog and cutting loose with a drummerless trio that includes former cohorts Russell Malone on guitar and bassist Christian McBride. The harmonic rapport of Green and Malone is immediately apparent in their exacting unison lines to open Horace Silver's "Virgo," which also features McBride's resonant bow work. No longer a wunderkind, the 36-year-old Green solos with youthful intensity (check the dynamic force of "Bellarosa") but also showcases his ensemble maturity by shouldering some of the rhythmic duty and giving Malone ample space to explore a more kinetic side of his muse. Malone's chords, Green's left hand, and McBride's yeoman time-keeping provide plenty of percussive context. Saving the best for last, the trio returns to Silver for a bluesy "Come On Home" that inspires Malone into perhaps the most commanding uptempo passages of his career thus far. --Britt Robson
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic!!.......2006-05-03
I would give it 10 stars if I could!!
I love this CD and am SO glad that I found it. Benny Green is fantastic and this disc is a work of art. I love the instrumentation, reminiscent of the Nat Cole Trio, but totally unique! As I see it, Benny has it all. He has soul, feeling and a great sense of swing plus the technique to make it all happen.
I dont understand the other reviewer who says Benny is too "Oscarish" in his playing. Yes, you can hear the Oscar Peterson influence but so what??? Is is just sour grapes? I say if you've got it, use it, and Benny plays the hell out of the piano!!
I loved the fact that the tunes on this disc are not well known. Russell Malone and Christian McBride really shine as well.
Highly recommended..I don't think you will be sorry!
Right move Benny!.......2002-07-30
Here is a good example of a talented and intelligent "young" musician. Benny Green. But first of all this "new" trio is really cooking here; they play each track with the right spirit, with intensity, with the right intention. There is a terrific technique all around but not the will to show off. Music here, come first. Moreover I appreciate the will to rediscover and to explore tracks that are classics but not too known or too abused. As a matter of fact the whole cd display a sense of classicism and of innovation at the same time. Authors range from Horace Silver, to Lee Morgan, to Bobby Hutcherson, Dexter Gordon, Joe Henderson, Elmo Hope, fantastic Jazz authors, not only unbelievable musicians as they are commonly remembered. Playing again music from these authours is a damn right move in my opinion. Jazz history is full of gems which we can rediscover, and explore in their deepness. Jazz is not only standard tunes!! In the end I expecially love this trio format (piano, guitar, double bass): I find that this trio setting can express jazz at it's fullest, with a sound balance you can't find elsewhere. It's like having a small orchestra made only of stringed instruments. Recently I bought a record from three masters of this trio format: André Previn Joe Pass, Ray Brown. If you want to buy a good effort from three "young lions" you can buy this cd from Benny Green with confidence. But please, don't forget to buy a real article (P/P/B) too!
If you like JAZZ, you must buy this CD.......2002-05-15
This CD is one of the best Jazz Cd I have ever heard! The speed and rythum is extraodinary. The harmeny is like a Be bop that never seems to slow down. Virgo, Swift Brisk are like, follow me if you can! Bellarosa, These are Soulful Days, and Hocus Pocus just cook man, just cook. Summer Night and Ernie's Tune are a mellow walk in heaven. Punjab, is a Weather Report like Bill Evans mix. Come on Home is a Cat walk! A must Buy!!
These are superficial showoff days too.......2001-08-21
Firmly in the Oscar Peterson tradition, Benny Green is so technically gifted, and so Oscarish, that the work of his flying fingers is superficial and flashy, and lacks the depth of truly great music. He is widely hailed for his blues/Silver/Timmons gospel influence, but typically fails to reach the soulfulness that came so naturally to Timmons, Hawes and to Horace. Green's technique is an obstruction as much as a weapon.
Green Without An Original In Sight.......2000-11-07
This CD is a remarkably refreshing effort by the current Green trio. Russell Malone and especially Christian McBride are simply supurb on this set, which explores rarities from the Blue Note songbook.
The Horace Silver tune 'Come On Home' is a highlight of this disc. It displays the hard bop roots of the group and really fires up the creative powers. Other good performances include 'Virgo' and the ballad 'Summer Night'. This CD is definitely a pleasing set of music that really has no particular faults. The only real let down was that the disc only contains around 45 minutes of tunes, which really could have been expanded upon somewhat.
I must admit though, that I generally find that drummer-less groups tend to lack something in the rythym department, luckily this disc does not show any obvious short comings in that department. Overall this disc comes recommended as a fine example of Green's rapidly maturing style. There is nothing truly astonishing in this music however you do get intimate studio session of the highest calibre, performed by three of the best present-day jazz artists around.

Excellent.......2007-05-09
The best "Sacred Harp" or "Shape Note" type singing that I've heard. The various renditons are clear and harmonious.
None of that tuning up, barking, la-la's or other cacophonous sounds here.
Brilliant.......2003-09-22
I couldn't recommend a CD more highly. As a musician I was amazed at the variety of the music here and the truly exceptional performances. It's seems we can always rely on Albany to put out the most interesting and highest quality recordings.

jack of all trades.......2006-02-18
Fareed is a master gut-string stylist. His electric work has no insight into tone. When the band refers to old-school funk, it undermines itself with it's lack of warmth. On eastern inspired numbers, the discoish rhythms and forced structures bog down the flow. Apparently jam bands are a big deal, and therefore, GM is a good business decison..only.
Groovy ethno-jazz..dig it!.......2005-09-05
Coupla tracks don't exactly work, but at least 2/3 of this is super-delicious soul smacking ethno-jazz fusion. Fareed Haque--half Indian, half Chilean--a master guitarist, teams up with fluid fusion bassist Kai Eckhardt, keyboards player Eric Levy and drummer Alan Hertz to deliver a CD of rare treats that please the psyche no end.
The last track, Milk Carton Blues, is minus Mr. Haque and a nifty little number, but for the full flavor of the band, check out the title track, Junckt, Be Dope, and Beware My Ethnic Heart. These you can't live without if you're a world fusion maven. These guys mix the grooves with the world music thing and do it so well it's a real pleasure.
You can hear the influence of Zawinul/Weather Report on a couple of tracks and that's a good thing; Garaj Mahal has learned from the best, integrated it, and moved it in their own direction.
Cool band. Nice cover art, too. A winner.
Garaj Mahal - The Jazz Rock Jam Band Super Group.......2005-01-23
LADIES AND GENTLEMENT, GARAJ MAHAL!
Happily, this band has true synergy. In the classic sense of the word that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts," Garaj Mahal has no weakness. The band is capable of supreme moments of clarity where time and space expand and you are one with the music. In addition the soloing capabilities of each member is at the level of talent where you are simply mesmerized by how good these guys really are.
The band is an interesting combination of elements with a touch of humor that makes them hard not to like. Kai Eckhardt, probably most noted for his work with the John McLaughlin Trio, and Fareed Haque having a stint with The Zawinul Syndicate under his belt lead this quartet through some Jazz Rock jamming that rivals any "well known" Jazz Rock musician(s), and is by far and away the very best of the now profusely proliferating "Jam Bands" scene. There are other great Jazz Rock Jam Bands to be sure, such as Aquarium Rescue Unit, The Derek Trucks Band, Bela Fleck, Charlie Hunter (Garage A Trois), and of course Phish. But none of these bands can rival the speed, dexterity, and tastefulness of Garaj Mahal. Garaj Mahal are great musicians that can jam at an incredible level, listening closely and reacting quickly, they make it all seem so easy and it always sounds so tasty.
I chose to cite "Mondo Garaj" [Their official studio release] to post this review as an example for a description of the band itself and all four of their official releases. They have a unique sound that is at once recognizable and yet smacks of many great bands and styles. From Grant Green's "Jan Jan", to the Zappaesque "Poodle Vamp", and Alfred James Ellis's "The Chicken", this band knows no limits. Their original compositions such as Hertz's "Make A Hippy Happy," Haque's "Gulam Sabri", and Eckhardt's "Never Give Up," and "Semos" (the father of all "apes" in Tim Burton's remake of "The Planet of the Apes") are perfect vehicles for the unified talent of this band and have an earthy quality that can be summed up in two words "good music".
For Jazz Rock fans, Garaj Mahal is the best thing to happen musically since the 80's. Think about that for a moment. And if I'm exaggerating, may the lord strike me de-, no, no, blind... (Thank you Mel...)
Fortunately, I have a cable connection to my Internet and have downloaded about 30 of their legally taped concerts. I still can't get enough of these guys. What's nice about their official releases "Mondo Garaj", and the three live releases "Vol. I," "Vol. II," and "Vol. III" is the significance of having different songs on each Cd and the recording quality is first class. Even though the band has over 100 concerts for download, you should consider the official releases for the reasons already cited in addition you'll be supporting the band and that's the best way to say "thank you" to a very special band.
In conclusion, no matter where you came from musically, if you're into Jazz Rock, Prog Rock, Jam Bands, Funk Bands, or playing flutes barefoot in a tree (thank you Firesign...), you'll like these guys a lot. Bet you can't buy just one!

My new favorite.......2005-01-22
I'll keep it short. Wow! This collection of tracks is a melting pot. You'll hear almost every facet of music. I love to hear the Hammond B3 blend in so many different forms. Thank goodness for Public Radio introducing me to this group. I could go on and on, but you can't go wrong putting this in your music collection.
Bionic Jazz Fusion.......2003-12-10
With the success of Garaj Mahal's Live Vol. 1-3 releases, the world is now ready to hear the first eruptions of this band's volcanic evolution.
When keyboardist Eric Levy joined the band, the event took place at In The Pocket Studios in San Francisco, CA. Guitarist and fellow Chicagoan Fareed Haque had tapped Levy to join Garaj Mahal, who were already performing regularly. Veteran bassist Kai Eckhardt and highly sought drummer Alan Hertz, residents of San Francisco, formed a rhythm section of unmatched skill. With Haque's gymnastic six-string workouts and Levy's finely honed keyboard work, the possibilities for the new Garaj were infinite. The quartet immediately captured their sound in the studio, and wound up with more than an hour of stunning material. Friends DJ Fly Agaric, DJ Roto, and The String Cheese Incident's Michael Kang contributed to the proceedings.
That was the winter of 2000, and not until now are the urgent, multi-dimensional sonic journeys that comprise Mondo Garaj available for all to enjoy. With moods ranging from explosive to surreal and everything in between, the album is transcendental and technically amazing all at once. The music defies conventional description, but the mix of studied jazz, eclectic world rhythms, focused funk, and spontaneous creation is immune from comparisons.
