It would be hard to argue that Ultimate Soul Christmas isn't truly the wham-bam collection of soul, R&B, jazz, gospel, blues, and pop it claims to be. Believe it, because its 30 tracks are practically a retrospective of the United States' bedrock African American musical genres framed in a Christmas wreath. While there's lots of old-school crooning from the likes of Luther Vandross, Nancy Wilson, Alexander O'Neal, and others, plus a smattering of Motown and boy bands like Boyz II Men (ironically sounding the most dated), the vocal performances on many tracks are timeless keepers. Among them are Otis Redding's "White Christmas," Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song (Merry Christmas to You)," Lou Rawls's swingin' and ever-so-delightful "What Are You Doing New Year's Eve?", Fats Domino's "Please Come Home for Christmas," and Bebe & CeCe Winans's "Silver Bells." Of special note are Bill Withers's heartfelt and instructive "The Gift of Giving," Candi Staton's scorching "Christmas in My Heart," and Gladys Knight & The Pips' "Do You Hear What I Hear." --Martin Keller

I bought Ultimate Soul intending to escape from the blandness of radio holiday music by the likes of Celine Dion, etc. Sadly, this set does not deliver. With a few exceptions most of it sounds like unemotional pop. If you want to hear the ultimate in soul at Christmastime, buy "Soul Christmas". That collection will move you, in every sense of the word. If you're looking for background music that won't distract from your Christmas party then Ultimate Soul Christmas might be a good choice. If you're looking for pure listening pleasure, keep looking.

this is truly what the title says: the ultimate soul christmas collection. all of our holiday favorites are here. nat cole's "the christmas song," donny hathaway's "this christmas" and the temptation's "silent night" are all front and center. there are also goodies by Lena, Ella, Smokey and Otis. An extra bonus is the warm and smokey Candi Staton track "Christmas in My Heart" and the Tri-City Singers' "Carol of the Bells." This is a must-have a great price!!!!!

This album has all the great basic tunes for christmas...However to complete your collection of christmas tunes,you may want to look at vol 2 thru 6 and beyond....A great album that captures christmas at its best...A must have for your collection and highly recommended 5 star rated ...

A nice mix of doo-wop and soul on this one. The Drifters version of "White Christmas" is worth the price itself if you don't have a copy. From the Supremes to Chuck Berry, this set definitely gives you a playlist from your favorite oldies station that would kick in around the holiday season. I could have done without Jimmy Boyd's "I Saw Mommy kissing Santa Claus" which may be the slowest version of this particularly bad song I have ever heard, but overall this is a good collection for lovers of Christmas tunes.

This is the first of six volumes. All offer some great holiday recordings but none are perfect. Depending on your musical tastes, you can select quite a few tracks from each volume to put together a first-rate mix tape or CD.

This first volume offers the most "classsics" with Brenda Lee's "Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree," Bobby Helms' ""Jingle Bell Rock," Gene Autry's "Rudolph," and the Harry Simeone Chorale's "Little Drummer Boy" among the offerings. Each volume also gives you a few holiday favorites from the cream of '60s Motown (in this volume it's Stevie Wonder's "What Christmas Means to Me" and "Silver Bells" by the Supremes) and '70s soul (here it is Donny Hathaway's "This Christmas" and The O'Jays "Christmas Ain't Christmas Without The One You Love").

What is unique to this series is the new holiday songs by your favorite Doo Wop artists that you won't find anywhere else. On volume one, both "You're My Christmas Present" by the Skyliners and "Christmas Serenade" by Johnny Maestro hold their own with the standards.

If you don't have any of these collections and are on a limited budget, I suggest buying them in numerical order (One first, Six last) until you get them all. Nearly every holiday recording of note - plus many unknown gems - are found on these discs.

I'm one of these people who LOVES christmas music. It really
gets me in the spirit. Over the years I probably have close to
30 Christmas CDs and this particular collection ranks right
at the top, as far as collections go. As you would suspect, Volume one has many of the heavy hitter Christmas songs from the
rock n roll era including rockin around the tree, jingle bell rock, what christmas means to me, the original little drummer boy
as well as two more recent classics: you're my christmas present
and christmas serenade. The "gimmick" to all these albums is that
they have 25 songs for the 25th which gives you about an hour or
so of music. Definitely worth your time, I like them all.

This is the first of many EXCELLENT holiday collections by WCBS-FM New York-thanks to Program Director Joe McCoy for putting together such wonderful Christmas music. Each volume has something for everyone to enjoy, in every age group. Many are songs I've grown up with, and still more are songs I'd heard for the first time & will continue to enjoy for years to come. If you're starting to put together your own collection of Christmas music, this series is a great way to start & you'll want to play them at your next Christmas party. Highly recommended.

This is a must, if only for the regional classic Dominic the Donkey! In fact I haven't found any other compilation Christmas classic CD with that track! If you haven't heard of Dominic the Donkey , then get it just to hear it! If you're Italian (or not!) it really makes you smile! Enjoy!

CBS-FM Program Director Joe McCoy does it again with Ultimate Christmas Album 2-every song is a treat to be enjoyed not only at holiday time but even now, summertime. I found myself putting these albums on during hazy, hot, humid weather to cool off with the air conditioner on. From the opening cut "Little Saint Nick" by the Beach Boys to the very last "After New Years Eve" by the Heartbeats you'll be thinking of treelights, candycanes & gift wrapping in no time. Very highly recommended for all collectors of classic Christmas music.

    I stumbled across this CD in a store several years ago, and have never regretted my decision to purchase it. While the CD is marketed with labels from various Oldies stations on it (most notably WCBS 101.1FM from New York City), it is actually produced by a little-known company called Collectables Records, and they have done an excellent job compiling this CD. Full of classic songs like "The Christmas Song" and "Christmas Vacation" (the one made famous in the movie of the same name), as well as quirky tunes such as "Jingle Bells" by the Jingle Dogs (obviously created by someone with just a little too much time on their hands...) and fun songs like "Chrissy the Christmas Mouse", there's something for everyone on this CD. The best part is, they crammed the music on this disc - 77 minutes and 24 seconds long with 22 songs. If you like Christmas music, you should definitely buy this. I also recommend checking out the other volumes in this collection. I've got volumes 1 and 4 as well, and will add others at some point.

    With the exception of this past year(1999), from '94-98 New York's Oldies Station's Ultimate Christmas Albums have become an annual holiday event. Each collection contains music we've all grown up with & some songs are rarities you might be hearing for the first time. Vol. 4 opens with Elvis' golden chestnut, Blue Christmas, & also included are Merry Christmas Baby as sung by Otis Redding, plus a hard to find version of Peace On Earth/Little Drummer Boy by David Bowie & Bing Crosby. I could go on & list every tune but won't, you'll just have to take my word for it that this is a great collection that you'll enjoy for many Christmases to come. This month Ultimate Christmas Album 5 will be released, and I anxiously look forward to adding it to my own collection. Get these collections & you're sure to have a really Cool Yule. Highly recommended.

    Last year, my oldies station CBS-FM didn't put out a holiday collection, issuing a Millenium Collection instead. Well, once I bought this, Vol. 5 of the Ultimate Christmas Album series, I realized it was worth the wait! As in the previous Volumes 1-4, this has something for everyone. Starting with one of the best rock/pop Christmas tunes, Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney & Wings, it also includes a few hard to find gems, such as Jingle Bell Rock by Hall & Oates, Blue Holiday by The Shirelles, Little Drummer Boy by The Tokens & Christmas Delight by The Four Tops. Most of the other songs here can be found on other holiday collections, but it's nice to have them here all on one CD. Whether you listen to Christmas music while decorating your home, baking holiday goodies or wrapping presents, this Vol. 5 Ultimate Christmas Album is just right for your enjoyment! Highly recommended for all lovers of Christmas music.

      Every year come Oct. I start pulling out my carton of Christmas music, taking inventory & getting ready to put myself in the mood for holiday shopping. The Ultimate Christmas Albums 1 thru 4 are without fail my very favorites. Each cd has a great variety of Christmas songs, whether traditional, rock, pop, soul, etc. Something for everyone. These collections are highly recommended for both home & office Christmas parties. Satisfaction guaranteed.

      A wonderful mixed collection of Christmas songs that have played Top 40 radio sometime since World War II. The third in the WCBS collection, this one has a strong set of classics, several of my favorites, and some that never made it very big.

      The best (Jose Feliciano: Feliz Navidad), the surprising (The Supremes: Twinkle, Twinkle Me), the traditional (Nat King Cole), the uproarious , and the oddball (Singing Dogs) are here.

      This album avoids the boredom that plagues some collections, and it moves nicely from ballads to rockers.

      Well produced, this CD has clean sound.
