Amazon.com essential recording
The greatest expression of Burt Bacharach's composing and arranging talents is the marvelous string of productions he made with Dionne Warwick and lyricist Hal David for a decade or so starting in 1962. Many of their triumphs are included in this three-CD box (also see the single disc The Dionne Warwick Collection), along with dozens of other tracks made between 1957 (Marty Robbins's "Story of My Life") and 1996 (Bacharach's collaboration with Elvis Costello on "God Give Me Strength"). The master's blend of froth, deep emotion, and challenging musicality provides many masterpieces and a few unfortunate moments: he doesn't have much to show for the '80s aside from "That's What Friends Are For" and "Arthur's Theme." Its handful of missteps aside, though, The Look of Love is an essential trove of great pop things. --Rickey Wright

The best..........2007-06-07
Without a doubt, this is the best album that I have ever owned...well maybe next to Steely Dan's Aja, which was the first I ever owned. I love the lyrics, the tempo changes and the genius that is Burt Bacharach and Hal David. This album is even more haunting for me since the untimely death of Burt's daughter Nikki. Nikki was one of my favorite songs, even before I ever knew who it was written for, but even more so now. All the Dionne Warwick hits plus Tom Jones, Trini Lopez, Bobby Goldsboro, Dusty Springfield et al, this is a must have for any true Bacharach afficianado.
Wingtips, Telstar, Rotary, 1964 Worlds Fair..........2007-04-05
Fantastic Voyage, Ursula Andress, AM Radio, Sean Connery, Paisley, Man From Uncle...
In short, Burt Bacharach represents pop culture of the 1960's. At it's apogee. Like a moon shot Bacharach's gorgeous melodies and Hal David's brilliant lyrics spanning the decade from the Blob to Movie of The Week. From Bobby Vinton to the Age of Aquarius. Sock Hop to Woodstock.
Essential: Frankie Valli, Beach Boys, Beatles, Stones, Airplane, Sinatra... Bacharach.
Great music of... and beyond... it's era. Timeless... as long as Anyone Has A Heart and The World Needs Love.
This is MUSIC. Not hip hop. Orchestral, composed, inspired.
Genius.
Burt's Beanery.......2007-03-27
WOW. This series of albums is wonderful PLUS A whole CD of Dionne Warwick doesn't hurt!
I'm amazed at how many of these songs i've forgotten but when I hear a few notes I recall the entire song... sort of like I had amnesia or something! Its amazing that so many of the songs in this list are in the mainstream ... still after as much as 40 years!
This is a definite BUY
DIG THAT BACH-AH-RACH.......2007-01-25
my late uncle hipped me to ole burt. i love what he did with a track.........those percussive horns, man!!!!! i dig this. although i do not like all the joints on here, it's a good thing to have. what stands out for me on here are the lou johnson joints. i especially love REACH OUT FOR ME. more standouts for me are IT'S LOVE THAT REALLY COUNTS (IN THE LONG RUN) by the shirrelles and PLEASE STAY by the drifters. now i like some of the dionne warwick songs on here, but in the liner notes, i think her reasons for doing some of those songs were ridiculous. i thought it was her on WHAT THE WORLD NEEDS NOW IS LOVE. i had no idea that it was a white lady. amazing vocal arrangement. another that just came to mind is DON'T GO BREAKING MY HEART. actually, that is like my fave on here. i wished that they would've put dionne warwick's version of YOU'LL NEVER GET TO HEAVEN IF YOU BREAK MY HEART ON HERE though. the stylistics did their thing, but i prefer the original. all in all, it is wonderful, but then again, it is another reason i am a skeptic whenm it comes to box sets.
Superb historical box set.......2006-09-21
This is not a "greatest hits" set, though many of Bacharach's greatest hits are contained here. Rather, it's a fascinating historical view of the progression of the songwriter(s) through four decades. It is truly instructive to listen to some of the less well-known pieces. The book that is included in the box set is an essential component: The writers really knew what they were talking about, and I've spent hours reading along with the (very detailed) descriptions of each song's history.
Highly recommended.

Elvis Costello takes the occasion of his first official live release (recorded with the 52-piece Metropole Orkest at The Hague's North Sea Jazz Festival in 2004) to not only recap the various non-rock/pop genres the restless veteran singer-songwriter has explored in recent years, but recast a few of his songbook favorites in striking new musical arrangements as well. The widow of Charles Mingus commissioned Costello to pen lyrics for the rousing revamp of the jazz legend's "Hora Decubitus" that anchors the album, a task he also performs for the bluesy title track, a reworking of Billy Strayhorn's final composition "Blood Count." Elvis wends through such oblique compositional corners as "Favourit! e Hour" and "Upon A Veil of Midnight Blue," a moody song originally written for blues great Charles Brown, but ultimately thoroughly reworked as "I Wonder How She Knows." "Clubland" is charged with savory Latin rhythms, "Almost Blue" recast as autumnal orchestral lament and "Watching the Detectives" re-imagined as jazzy, Bernard Herrmann-esque `50s TV theme. Other standouts include a swinging big band cover of Dave Bartholomew's "That's How You Got Killed Before" and a gorgeous rendition of his first Burt Bacharach collaboration, "God Give Me Strength." The set's bonus disc explores yet another intriguing corner of Costello's contemporary non-pop career via the 45-minute orchestral Il Sogno Suite, music culled from his '04 score for the Aterbaletto dance troupe's Italian production of A Midsummer's Night Dream. --Jerry McCulley
Album Description
Elvis Costello's My Flame Burns Blue is a live album with the legendary Metropole Orkest, a 52-piece jazz orchestra from the Netherlands, recorded in concert at The Hague. A bonus disc offers a 45-minute suite from Il Sogno, Costello's first full-length orchestral work. The album alternates between imaginatively reinvented Costello favorites like "Almost Blue," "Clubland," and "Watching the Detectives" (arranged "in the style of a 1950s television theme"), Costello compositions seeing release for the first time on a Costello album, and unexpected collaborations. "This recording captures a very joyful evening at the North Sea Jazz Festival and collects together songs and arrangements that have been developed over the last decade," writes Costello in his detailed liner notes.
For the opening track, "Hora Decubitus," Costello was invited by Charles Mingus's widow, Sue, to contribute lyrics to the jazzman's compositions. This song was completed in the immediate aftermath of September 11. "I could offer nothing more than a simple affirmation of life and rejection of vengeance," writes Costello. For the title track, Costello also wrote lyrics for Billy Strayhorn's final composition, "Blood Count."
Other highlights seeing release on a Costello album for the first time include "Speak Darkly, My Angel" and "Upon a Veil of Midnight Blue," which was written for and recorded by West Coast bluesman Charles Brown as "I Wonder How She Knows."
Il Sogno was originally commissioned by the Italian Dance Company, Aterbaletto, for their adaptation of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. Following its premiere in Bologna with the Orchestra del Teatro Communale, the ballet was staged throughout Italy, Germany, France and Russia. Il Sogno was subsequently recorded by the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas. The recording was released in September 2004 by Deutsche Grammophon and stayed at the top of Billboard's Contemporary Classical Charts for fourteen weeks.
Il Sogno received rave reviews upon its release. Mark Swed at The Los Angeles Times declared "Costello's sound is surprisingly fresh. His melodies are memorable. The sudden swings into jazz prove pure delight... [The performance is] bursting with life." The Boston Globe's Richard Dyer proclaimed "You'd have to go back to George Gershwin to find a composer-performer undertaking a project as ambitious as Il Sogno... It is full of character and storytelling, and the orchestration is skillful, unusual, and colorful."

An undiscovered gem........2007-05-24
I have not been able to get this cd off my player. I hum themes from it constantly.
I Want More.
Anyone who wonders about the amount of production that goes into an Elvis Costello rock record will be astounded by the writing here, the thought, the musicality, and the professionalism of a full-time orchestra that swings. I don't mean that stilted Boston Pops crap, but real honest-to-God chops!
The sound clips here don't do this record justice.
This is absolutely one of his very best recordings and I urge everyone to go out and buy it! You won't be disappointed.
Elvis Costello does jazz!.......2007-05-13
My love & admiration for the work of Vince Mendoza, and my search for projects he's been involved with have led me in many different directions. Apart from some obvious places like Mendoza's own albums (some of which have been very hard to come by) and albums by the likes of John Abercrombie and Peter Erskine, they've also led me to people I would never have thought of on my own; people like Jane Monheit, Joni Mitchell, Stefano di Battista and Yuri Honing.
But although I'd heard of him, I never in a million years thought this search would lead me to Elvis Costello. I consider my musical tastes to be very eclectic but still, I would never have thought that I'd enjoy listening to an Elvis Costello CD, much less that I would actually own one.
But here we are. This CD of 14 very interesting songs sang in the jazz tradition, was recorded live at the North Sea Jazz Festival in 2004. Costello is backed by the Metropole Orkest (also known as the Metropole Orchestra), conducted by Vince Mendoza. Mendoza also arranges "That's How You Got Killed Before", "Episode of Blonde" and the title track, which is only 3 of the 14 songs but it's good enough for me. Interestingly, certainly for me, Bill Frisell & Willem Friede also arrange a song here - "Upon A Veil of Midnight Blue".
Costello is no Tony Bennett but he handles the songs with great charm and feeling. This is a singer who believes what he sings and as the listener, I in turn believe him. As I fully expected, the orchestration is sublime and there are some great trumpet, sax, guitar and cello solos. I enjoy the performance just as much as the applauding audience seems to and the more I listen to this CD, the more I find that surprising. Elvis Costello. Who would've thought? Definitely not me. So does this mean I might go on to buy more Elvis Costello CDs? It's difficult to say but it's certainly more likely now than it was before.
The very generous Bonus CD has another 18 songs, excerpts from Costello's Ballet after Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream". I'm not a Shakespeare fan, a fan of the ballet or a classical music fan per se, but I do enjoy listening to this. Maybe it's because it features people whose work I've become very familiar with over the years. People like Peter Erskine on the drums, John Harle on saxophone, Chris Laurence on double bass, all backed by the London Symphony Orchestra.
All said and done, this is a wonderful CD full of rich and very rewarding music. I'm so glad I bought it.
Long live Elvis Costello! Long live Vince Mendoza!
Is It Elvis(Presley) or Duke Ellington Or both?.......2007-03-28
Never an artist that can be labelled,EC's life as an expression of the music he makes is royally showcased here in the myriad of styles presented on this very interesting CD presenting so many shades of great music eras GONE BY BUT NOT FORGOTTEN that makes Elvis not only a very interesting musician but a historical personality that leaves the imprint of a man living life to its max.
I have been fortunate to listen to the man from "My Aim Is True" saw the original Attractions more than once, and like him can identify with his changes of tastes recognizing great music for what it is despite the chronology.
For starters, reworking his songs to fit at times Latin tinged, jazzy, classical,Sinatra Bacharach, countryish arrangements and balladry remains bold considering his penchant for his songwriters style as showcased on the rocking sophistry of "Trust" albums like 'Almost Blue"(country),homage to great songwriters (Painted From Memory) even his own development as a mature songwriter (Imperial Bedroom)avant garde classical(Juliet Letters)with his later work & experiments fusing that manic angry young rock and roller of the past nodding to his old Motown love(Get Happy),with the likes of Allen Toussaint in the homage to New Orleans(The River In Reverse)what came before New Orleans was this fine sounding CD paying it's due to great music in all it's manifold stripes with passion and excitement Ala Charles Mingus to the regal elegance of Duke Ellington/Billy Strayhorn.
Even the CD cover harkens back to Duke's Anatomy Of Murder(Ellington's foray into movie soundtrack), and the presented music with this jazz classical orchestra is something only a Charles Mingus was capable off so highly reminiscent of Mingus is Costello at times that it is refreshing.
An additional nod to Duke in his Shakespearean jaunts through his "Such Sweet Thunder" and major works such as "Black,Brown @ Beige" is apparent in EC as is his general appreciation of these great American jazz and big band artists in his unmistakable UK sublteties.
Such is the case of the bonus CD "Il Sogno" Suite, resembling again Duke's "Such Sweet Thunder" in theme but is pretty classical.
If any comparison can be made ,what comes to my mind stylistically and thematically are Joe Jackson albums notably(The album duplicating that early Sonny Rollins album cover) 'Body&Soul' pretty sophisticated stuff for the time, and Jackson's reworking of swing and big band for a young unsophisticated punk rock audience of the day with "Jumpin Jive".
New Orleans Dr.John the night tripper, whose involvment with great cover albums and homages to Ellington and Toussaint comes to mind as well.
EC made the grade with this one and is in good company.
I would love to hear EC do a Count Basie album with some Satchmo and King Oliver thrown in for good measure.
This man does it all.......2007-01-29
Elvis as a crooner? Oh yes. He pulls it off. I saw the tour for this release at the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta. It only supported my faith in this album. I am up for anything different and when I heard of this I couldn't resist. It holds up.
"HORA DECUBITIS" & "GOD GIVE ME STRENGTH" are the openers and closers for this disc. They are the 2 standouts on the disc and let me tell you, all else in between makes the perfect sandwich. You chew, disolve and are left with a pleasant taste in your mouth.
When I saw Costello perform in Atlanta, I was blown away by his voice. He came out for an encore and didn't even use a mic. He gave an incredible performance, and he did the same for this CD performance at NORTH SEA JAZZ FESTIVAL.
All in all, if you are a fan, or a newcomer, this man does not dissapoint on this. Costello is all over the place in the musical circles, but he remains stedfast on this release. He delivers!
Our little overachiever.......2007-01-01
Proving he just can't sit still, Elvis takes on Jazz in this live release. While there are a couple new selections to choose from, the majority of this CD is Elvis rethinking back catalog. Frankly, I am beginning to wish he'd leave well enough alone. Some of the revisions just come off as quirky for their own sakes, and the noirish version of "Watching The Detectives" just doesn't work for me.
Although what does work best are the latter day material. Songs like "Favorite Hour" (from "Brutal Youth") were made for this sort of embellishment, and "Episode Of Blonde" benefits. But "Clubland" and "Almost Ideal Eyes" just don't. It is primarily the non-Costello compositions that hold up best, like "That's How You Got Killed Before" and "Hora DeCubitus" (to which Costello added lyrics to a Charles Mingus song).
But overall, this is just Elvis Costello doing his regular exorcism of his muse. For a casual listener, this will fall into the same category as "The Juliet Letters," "North" or "Il Songo." The collaboration with Allen Toussaint is a better work, and more worth your time than this. Passable.

A Film Maker Could Always Rely on Mancini to Deliver a Composition that Hit the Mark for a Film and Conveyed Exactly What was Required and More. He also Filled the Role of an American Mantovani, Recording 'muzak' Versions of Popular Hits. He was Handsome, Personable, but Most of All, Well Respected for his Craft.
Customer Reviews:
not enough Galway.......2003-10-02
There are only four songs with James Galway. The way this recording is presented is misleading and buyers should be aware that this is NOT a joint effort between these two great artists.. I was totally disappointed. I think Henry Mancini is wonderful but was expecting to hear a collaboration. So if you're looking for flute music this isn't it. However it's a great collecton of Henry Mancini's work.
Too Good to Last.......2000-03-03
I heard this on PBS. Galway and Mancini may be two of the most talented musicians of our century. Galway for his complete mastery of the flute and Mancini for his ability to arrange , produce and in this instance direct the orchestra while Galway performs. They do several duets of a comical nature as well. This is important because it is one of Mancini's last efforts prior to his unfortunate passing.

Customer Reviews:
"Walk On By".......2006-01-16
The multi-faceted and prolific composer, Grammy Awardee and a hitmaker, Burt Bacharach, was one of the special guests at Chris Botti's concert I've watched last year at the Wilshire Theatre. He showed-off his piano artistry on Chris Botti and Paula Cole's performance of one of his very famous compositions and my all-time favorite, "The Look of Love." I loved all the hit songs he collaborated with lyricist Hal David - "Walk On By," "Alfie," "You'll Never Get To Heaven," "I Say A Little Prayer," "A House Is Not A Home," "Anyone Who Had A Heart," "They Long To Be Close To You," "The April Fools," "That's What Friends Are For," "This Girl's In Love With You" and "There's Always Something There To Remind Me."
This is a compilation of twelve of his most remarkable compositions including the title track of a Broadway production, "Promises, Promises." Some are with vocals by Nancy Wilson ("Alfie" and "Wives and Lovers") and Lou Rawls ("Any Day Now") and the rest are purely instrumentals. This CD promises a great listening enjoyment from the opening track, "Promises, Promises" by the Jazz Cruzaders to the last track, Ernie Watts' "Knowing When To Leave." Grant Green does a great take on "I'll Never Fall In Love Again." Each track is a charming delight.
My highlights are "What The World Needs Now" and "Walk On By," performed by a great saxophonist, Stanley Turrentine. "The Look of Love" by The Three Sounds is also a great listen. Another beguiling track is "Do You Know The Way To San Jose?" featuring Richard Holmes on organ. Earl Klugh, a fine guitarist, shines in his solo guitar with the gorgeous interpretation of "The April Fools." Nancy Wilson's take on "Alfie" is so beautiful and the orchestra was conducted and arranged by one of the best Sinatra arrangers, Billy May.
This is a wonderful tribute to the timeless music of Burt Bacharach.
Men Will Always Be Men.......2005-04-17
The homage to Burt Bacharach in the "Blue Note Plays" series is an excellent collection that spans recordings made from 1964-1990. Bacharach is one of the most distinctive of our modern pop composers. One can easily identify his distinctive melodies. The opener by Jazz Crusaders is a sterling peppy rendition of "Promises Promises" with Wayne Henderson's trombone & Wilton Felder's tenor sax sharing stage. Stanley Turrentine's "Walk On By" has his sexy sax swagger on this classic melody. The newest recording is Lou Rawls' take on "Any Day Now" with Chris Parker's pumping rhythm section & Richard Tee's piano as Rawls croons, "My wild beautiful bird, you'll have flown & I'll be all alone." The most vintage track is 1964's Nancy Wilson reading of "Wives & Lovers," "Day after day there are girls at the office & men will always be men, don't send him off with your hair still in curlers, you may not see him again." The Three Sounds' take on "The Look of Love" is a bouncy instrumental with Gene Harris' wild piano punctuated by a fleet of trumpets, trombones & saxes. Ernie Watts' tenor sax is front & center on the closer "Knowing When to Leave." This is an excellent collection by Blue Note that maintains the label's usual high technical standards with some great jazz. Enjoy!

Not bad..........2006-06-10
I picked this up at the record store because I thought it was too weird not to. I've always loved the White Stripes, and I was curious to see what a string quartet could do with their music. Contrary to my expectations, I found the songs to be really cool. I suppose it speaks more for Jack White's brilliant songwriting ability than the actual musicians, but if you are a White Stripes fan you might be surprized with this one.
Disappointed.......2006-02-18
Of the five String Quartet Tribute albums that I have bought, this is by far the weakest, despite the involvement of Tom Tally, whose Coldplay string tribute tracks are far superior to the ones found on this album. The melodies seem particularly discordant in places, and I can't help but wish that I'd bought a different string quartet album, or even perhaps the bluegrass tribute.
I like it, I like it........2005-12-18
In spite of my age, 78 years, I find my CD of the White Stripes music played by a string quartet growing on me each time I play it. I think the quality of the strings is not good, a pity.
White Stripes Rock!.......2005-11-23
I really like the White Stripes. Their music is alive and kicking, unlike so much over-rehearsed, technologically drowned-out, re-mixed, so-called music these days. This tribute album has the White Stripes musical quality, regardless if it sounds like it is played by a high-school-level string quartet. Heck, the White Stripes sound like a garage-band to me. In either case, the artists make the music sound reachable, as though I could pick up a guitar and play along. This is a quality I look for in music.
the sound of muzak.......2004-02-19
Why is it an honour to be covered by A String Quartet? Anyone can call themselves a string quartet provided they've got four people in one spot holding stringed-instruments. This is White Stripes elevator muzak. If you think simply giving something a 'classical' string treatment affords low-brow rock with some kind of high-brow prestige you don't really love or understand music at all, and you're buying into a bogus notion of orthodoxy. On the other hand, if you're a large business who plans to keep callers on hold for hours on end, buy this now. It'll make a nice change from Vivaldi.

Customer Reviews:
Intelligent, nuanced songwriting for fans of Beatlesque genre-hopping.......2006-01-30
This band is doing something that I don't hear any other band out there doing. Taking risks. Big ones, that pay off the more you listen to this album. At first, it's an odd listen, full of throw-back styles ranging between obtuse indie pop and straight up jazz. The long melodies and dense arrangements leave you a little disoriented. But it's so well-done you know there's something up. By the 3rd or 4th listen, I was getting it. Layers of lush strings, pianos, chiming guitars and stacked vocals reveal harmonic depth, melodic innovation and stylistic blendings that you won't hear anywhere else. It's not edgy in the sense of the production or vocals, but edgy in the sense of it taking so many risks and doing it's own thing. I think of American Music Club, Rufus Wainwright, Tears For Fears. Iconoclastic artists who you can't really compare other people to. There are a couple of poppy tunes that casual music fans will dig, but in general, this is for serious music listeners who have an ear for intelligent, nuanced songwriting and a lush, ambient sound.
THE BEST ALBUM YOU'VE NEVER HEARD!!.......2005-11-14
I laughed when I read the other review of this album. Whoever wrote that review must be a mainstream, top-40 listener with very little taste or musical intellect to have had such little appreciation for what I think is one of the best new bands I've heard in years! This album BLEW ME AWAY!!! The originality and intricacy of the melodies are prodigal and the quality of production is refreshingly fine-tuned. The songs are euphorically thought-provoking, taking you on 9 very distinct journeys throughout the album. Think "steely-dan-like" melodies and vocals with the perfectionistic production of Jamiroquai. Tribeca has managed to perfect the art of true songwriting. If you appreciate TRULY OUTSTANDING music, you MUST buy this album....otherwise go listen to The Killers.
Truly sophisticated music for (apparently) only truly sophisticated listeners.
Yawn. Yanni. Yo-Yo Ma. New Age Garbage........2005-10-19
Almost fell asleep during the first -- and every subsequent -- track on this unendingly boring album. No tempo changes, every song mid-tempo, undecipherable lyrics, cliched melodies -- it's all here, folks, and it's all just a big old honkin' sonic BLATT. B-o-r-i-n-g. Fans of "Gaucho"-era Steely Dan and fans of England Dan and John Ford Coley *might* -- MIGHT -- find this collection of indistinguishible vagely entertaining.
I, however didn't.
I resent the fact that I will never get those 50 minutes of my life back -- what a waste.

Customer Reviews:
The Burt you need.......2006-01-11
Five stars are for Burt as a composer and director and for his melodies which are something extremely beautiful. Extremely beautiful. This collection comprehend all the music Burt is rightly famous for plus some more. Burt is really one of the greatest composers from the most recent decades. Raindrops, Wifes and Lovers, What the world needs now, I'll never fall in love again and all the greatest songs he wrote are rightly super famous. I think these songs as immortal popular songs. I love Bacharach and David's music. I think they wrote like the greatest standards authors, Porter, Rodgers and Hart, Johnny Mandel, Mancini etc. Infact their songs became in the sixties even progressions which jazz players played occasionally with very nice results by the way! I suggest if you love Bacharach' music to check Stan Gets Bacharach songbook for example, extremely pleasing. Even in the lyrics field David (and I think Burt contributed too for sure) wrote tender but clever songs. I love these songs, for real. But this collection contains still some not essential tunes. It's strange in my opinion to consider how diverse were those songs, the essential ones and the unessential ones. The quality grade is so different. I think radically different. I think that Burt should be aware of that, but you know how inspiration is... something it's there and sometimes simply, not. If you own this collection I think you possess all the music from Burt you may ever desire. His genius its all here.
Best of the Bacharach "Look of Love" Collections.......2003-04-26
The "Look of Love" compilations come in various configurations. There is a 3-disc set for US release that is a bit too exhaustive - it contains a lot of songs that aren't essential. It also contains some versions of the hits by artists who didn't record the most well-known versions. On the other hand, the 1-disc compilation for US release doesn't include some essential songs that you probably DO want in any Bacharach collection.
This compilation - which is a Canadian import - is just the right size. It's 2-discs, includes all of the essential Bacharach hits (with the one exception being Promises, Promises) and contains the most-well known versions of each hit. It's better also than the 2-disc version for UK release which also has a different line-up more geared to a UK audience.
