It Could Happen to You
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Hardly as angst-ridden as Chet Baker's legend would suggest, 1958's It Could Happen to You is Baker still riding high, a star winsomely crooning some favorite standards over subtle accompaniment by small groups whose members include pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Sam Jones, and the unstoppable Philly Joe Jones on drums. Baker's boyish moods are perfect for the likes of "How Long Has This Been Going On?," "You're Driving Me Crazy," and (believe it) "Everything Happens to Me." --Rickey Wright

A Knight's Tale.......2006-12-30
This is such a fun CD. Mixes, jigs, electric guitar, choirs--what more could you ask for? Oh, and fanfares, of course.
Excellent Soundtrack Masterpiece.......2004-03-12
A knight's tale is one of the best movies ever made in history. It has everything from action to comedy to romance, all which I love in a movie. The soundtrack lives up to the movie. This is one of the best soundtracks ever composed. All the songs on here are excellently performed. My favorite song would be Track #7- To run or not to run. Excellent emotional song, good love theme also. I recommend to soundtrack to all soundtrack collectors. Do not pass this one by, for this soundtrack is already hard to come bye, so if you seen the movies and loved the score get the soundtrack, i guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Rousing and beautiful.......2003-02-22
Carter Burwell, who provided the score for A Knight's Tale, had to come up with music that would carry the film through. After all, it is the score, not the rock music that is the heart and soul of a movie. With that in mind, he succeeds. The music is heroic and romantic with lots of great sounds in it. "Nemesis" kicks things off with dramatic, medieval music, which leads to an adventurous section with plenty of horns and driving percussion. "Cooked Patents" contains an electric guitar mixed with traditional instruments from medieval times. "A Lance Without Target" is another thrilling adventure track with the same music that existed in "Nemesis." "St. Vitus' Dance" is utilized in 2 different tracks with different mixes. The Smithy mix is much better than the Grog mix. The best theme in the score is the love theme, which is a mainly string oriented 10 note motif that is the heart and soul of the film. The best tracks that showcase this outstanding theme are "To Run Or Not To Run" and the best track, "Showdown", which reprises all the other themes into one almost 7 minute track. An added bonus to this score is dialogue from the film from Chaucer, played by Paul Bettany found in the last track, after the music dies down. The director of the film, Brian Helgeland, describes the music in this way: "Carter's music has got sixth sense. It goes a level deeper than it's supposed to. It doesn't play the emotion of the character, the emotion of the moment. It plays the psyche, the consciousness of the character. Carter's music psychoanalyzes the moment. But in our hearts as well as our heads." I couldn't have said it any better.
Perfect soundtrack........2002-09-07
If you are checking for a wonderfull soundtract you must get this. I listen this and it was so great that i'm listennung this songs alll day in the car, in my house, in school, even in the bathroom! You must have this cd at your own home. 5 stars!
"always a fresh approach with each score...Burwell!".......2001-09-05
A talent to be reckoned with ~ Carter Burwell...who has in such a short time given filmgoers a trip and a half through his music...reaching down in his big black bag on past achievements ~ "Raising Arizona" (1987), "Miller's Crossing" (1990), "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" (1992), "Rob Roy" (1995), "Fargo" (1996), "Conspiracy theory" (1997), "The Big Lebowski" (1998), "Being John Malkovich" (1999), "The Corruptor" (1999), "The Generals Daughter" (1999), "Book Of Shadows:Blair Witch 2" (2000), "Hamlet" (2000), "O Brother Where Art Thou" (2000)...I only mention a few from his over fifty scores composed since 1984.
There are stand outs ~ "ST. VITUS' DANCE (SMITHY MIX)", "ST. VITUS' DANCE (GROG MIX), "THE SHOWDOWN", bringing all the counterpoints and themes together, blending each with particular care...but the highlight has to be ~ "TO RUN OR NOT TO RUN", beautiful beyond all doubt, strings open with muted brass and the theme comes through like a ray of sunshine entering a group of trees, thundering percussion abounds giving each measure strength to behold, one of the best compositions I've heard from this composer who is rising to his place in the stars.
Entire album is a must have for any "film-score-buff", don't pass this up...you'll be missing an important part in the career of the composer extradinor' ~ CARTER BURWELL!

I Didn't Like the Movie but I Liked the Soundtrack!.......2002-04-27
I didn't like the movie it's not one of my favorite romantic movies, but the movie did have some wonderful music so I definitely like this soundtrack better than the movie. My favorite song is Young At Heart, I like the one sung by Tonny Bennett and Shawn Colvin but it's the Frank Sinatra recording that I prefer, he is one of my favorite older singers, other songs I like are They Can't Take That Away From Me sung by Billie Holiday, Now It Can Be Told, sung by Tony Bennett and I Feel Lucky sung by Mary-Chapin Carpenter.
Better than the movie!.......2001-11-16
Great sound track for a so-so movie but that so-so movie did have some mighty fine music, I like basically every song but I'm not wild about the instrumental stuff.
One-track treasure?.......2000-05-06
One track - Tony Bennet's slick version of the Irving Berlin classic, NOW IT CAN BE TOLD - made this CD worth the price ...for me, at least. And hey, you get Sinatra too? Haven't you ever bought a CD for the sake of one single track before? I have...hundreds of times.
One track makes it worthwhile.......2000-05-06
Tone Bennett's wonderful rendition of the old Irving Berlin classic, NOW IT CAN BE TOLD, made this CD worth the price. And hey, you have Sinatra too! (Don't you sometimes buy a CD for the sake of one track?

Customer Reviews:
Intimate and tuneful.......2005-01-14
I'm an admirer of Previn as both classical and jazz musician, and in both categories he excels. This album has the same intimate, highly musical quality that you'll find in Keith Jarrett's The Melody at Night with You. What I appreciate about both is the fact that the pianist's invention always serves the music; it's never obtrusively artful or showy. Highly recommended. Do yourself a favor and get Jarrett's disc to go along with this.
Underrated Previn.......2002-01-14
Andre Previn has always been an underrated jazz pianist. Because of his astonishing variety of successes as a classical conductor, pianist and composer; a film composer; a songwriter; and a performer of romantic cocktail music, he has been eyed suspiciously by the jazz community. In fact, his Tatum-like virtuosity, and his wildly unique and often playfully humorous piano style has made him one of the most interesting, innovative, and entertaining jazz pianists around. His many trio albums on Contemporary Records in the '50s (with Red Mitchell and Shelly Manne) still hold up as some of the best of their kind. But like Rodney Dangerfield, he never gets any respect. Thus, even his most kind critics are likely to throw darts at "Ballads" as too sweet and not swinging. Nonsense! It's not Monk, but it is nevertheless a beautiful set and a loving tribute to some of the greatest songwriters in Tin Pan Alley. Previn squeezes out every harmonic nuance of each song, yet he sounds like he's playing off the cuff in his living room late at night just to amuse himself. Previn may not swing like Teddy Wilson or Oscar Peterson on this offering, but I can't imagine any serious listener being left unmoved by his version of Burton Lane's "How Are Things In Glocca Morra?" It's simply gorgeous. Previn's amazing talents and his proficiency in many musical styles all come together in this unjustly overlooked CD. Give it a chance!
What happened?.......2001-10-03
THe magic is gone. After reading the liner notes, I learned that someone at the studio asked Previn to make an album of just ballads. BIG MISTAKE. I think he was not in the mood.

Avoid this at all costs.......2004-11-10
Excruciating. Ray Brown is one of my all-time heroes but even he can't redeem this appalling travesty. Kiri Te Kanawa should be prevented from ever attempting this repertiore again by any means necessary.
If you want a good example of how great jazz with a singer can be, buy "John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" or Charlie Haden "The Art of Song" instead.
"A lesson in laid back CLASS".......2004-10-14
Here is the most beautiful rendition of "Never Was You" ever with the restrained vocal purity of Kiri and the awesome chords of Andre's piano...a real gem. Ray Brown and Mundell also contribute their world-class talents to this unique UNPRESSURED album. A treasure that will please music lovers for many years. GRAB IT WHILE YOU CAN!
Kiri does it again!.......2004-04-26
Wonderful! As is everything the inimitable Kiri does. No, she does not sound like other jazz singers but adds the Kiri touch that has made her one of the most listened to of all performers, whether of opera or jazz. This CD made my ears very happy. I'd advised the disgruntled writer to hold on to her CD--there is only one available on the entire internet and the seller is asking for $75.00. An unmistakable message--it appears that Kiri lovers don't want to part with Kiri CDs. Also advise other viewers to get the VHS from which this CD was made. Inexpensive now but it'll not be for long. It's called Kiri & Andre: The making of Sidetracks. It has the best closeups of Kiri that I've ever seen and shows what a happy-go-lucky gal she is. Also recommend her Kiri! on VHS (her 50th Birthday Concert) It is one of the best musical recitals ever made--period. Sorry, the price is out of sight.

Just buy this album.......2005-05-26
if you're having doubts about this album, just buy it. Get a bottle of smooth scotch or wine. Wait until the sun goes down on a spring or summer night. Open your windows to let the breeze through. Turn the lights off, light a few candles. Put this cd on and drink your drink slowly. It will all open up for you.
If you'll buy this one you won't need Greatest Hits,.........2004-06-29
or Best Of or something like that! This album is the result of Baker's first sessions for the independent Riverside label and it's just fabulous. The Chet Baker Quartet is featured includes Kenny Drew (piano), Sam Jones (bass), and Philly Joe Jones (drums)- ex. Miles Davis. Song selection is great and Chet's singing and playing is gorgeous! My favourite Chet album.
Great Album.......2004-05-08
This album is amazing. Chet Baker is equally good as a singer as he is trumpet player. The highlights for me are How Long Has This Been Going On? I'm Old Fashioned (what a beautiful song) It could Happen to You. Highly Recommended!
Essential Chet Baker.......2002-11-16
This CD showcases Chet Baker's vocal abilities at their peak. His trumpet solos are also exquisite. Kenny Drew's piano work is a textbook example of how to support a vocalist, adding instrumental spice without obstructing the singer, on par with Teddy Wilson's work with Billie Holiday. Sam Jones and Philly Joe Jones function similarly, swinging solidly in support without disturbing the mood of each tune. They are replaced by George Morrow and Dannie Richmond on a few tracks without incident. The marriage of great performance with a selection of great jazz standards guarantees a tasty listening experience, seasoned with a touch of Chet's bittersweet wistfulness.
Worth investigating.......2001-01-30
But not the very best example of Chet's unique singing voice. A patchy album with some weak, dispirited and rather half-hearted performances from Chet. Nevertheless, he excels on I'm Old Fashioned and While My Lady Sleeps; about half the selections are good. Not certain that Kenny Drew was the perfect pianistic foil for Chet, either: a bit too strident for this context, maybe. Try 'The Best of Chet Baker Sings' and 'Embracable You' first if you want to hear Chet's lovely vocal work at its very best. Still, this album is probably worth getting for its four or five good performances anyway, especially if you are a true Baker fan. It may be worth buying just for the classic cover art!!

Customer Reviews:
Great Album, but No Vocal Fireworks.......2005-09-20
This is a beautfully rendered album and Joni's voice is pitch perfect. She sings every note as written. But she takes no interpretive chances and there's no vocal fireworks. The real accomplishment here are the splendid arrangements by Jeffrey Osborne and Geoff Love - two men who never met a huge orchestra they didn't like. The lush, layered arrangements are spectacular. The musicians are also first rate and for such a large gathering there's a fantastic cohesiveness. Though her singing is pleasant enough, Joni's voice is basically the 101st instrument in the entire ensemble.
Great Standards!!.......2003-02-15
This is a great album of classic standards with lush orchestrations. Joni's voice is incredibly smooth and expressive and the selections are some of the best of the Jerome Kern era of classic songwriters. My favorite is Imagination. Best version I have ever heard...as a matter of fact many of the tunes are my benchmark arrangements. If you are a fan of the 30's-50's classic love songs and ballads, this is for you!! Great for Valentines Day. Romantic stuff. This was one of my favorite albums on vinyl as a kid. Now I can get the CD. Yeah!
Joni James at Abbey Road!.......2002-07-23
Miss Joni James swept away on a veritable ocean of violins!
This classic LP remastered in pristine sound with tender torch tunes rendered "close to the microphone" by one of the 1950s most popular singing icons. Recorded in London at the famous Abbey Road studios with those lush, sweeping Acquaviva arrangements. Joni's most divine moment! (Tacked on to the original album are 6 tracks, also with the 100 Strings orchestra, of songs from her Jimmy McHugh tribute LP.)
