Jazz 'Round Midnight
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Issued in a series devoted to jazz at its most romantic, this CD is compiled from several sessions either recorded in Paris in 1955, emphasizing Chet Baker's trumpet with trio accompaniments, or New York in 1965, emphasizing his voice in settings from nonet to duet. He's in good form for all of it, one of jazz's essential ballad artists defining a fine edge between cool detachment and wistful sensitivity. His trumpet is particularly inventive on the relaxed tempo of the extended "Exitus" and simply brilliant on the brief, finely etched "Alone Together." His voice may have been in the best shape of his career in 1965, and the nonet of reeds and rhythm frames it beautifully on "Easy Living" and "Trav'lin' Light." "Sweet Sue," revealing new depths with Baker's surprising ballad treatment, and "You're Mine, You!" are gorgeously spare with just Kenny Burrell's guitar, while a young Bob James adds limpid piano to "The Touch of Your Lips." --Stuart Broomer

In 1955, Miles Davis signed on with jazz powerhouse Columbia Records. With alto and tenor saxophonists Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane, drummer Philly Joe Jones, bassist Paul Chambers, and pianist Red Garland, Davis released 'Round About Midnight, which evinces even more clearly what a phenomenal unit Davis was nurturing. Stylistically, Midnight encompasses standards (or soon-to-be standards) such as "Dear Old Stockholm," "Bye-Bye Blackbird," Tadd Dameron's "Tadd's Delight," and Jackie McLean's forward-thinking composition "Little Melonae." Miles and company reprise "Budo" from the historic Birth of the Cool sessions. The standout track is Davis's Harmon-muted reading of Thelonious Monk's ballad, "'Round Midnight, which is still a Miles standard bearer. Three alternate takes round out the session: "Two Bass Hit" and "Sweet Sue" feature adventuresome solos by Coltrane that preview his masterpiece "Giant Steps." And Garland moves away from his Ahmad Jamal pianisms with his introspective ivory ticklings. If you want to hear the origins of post-bop modern jazz, this is it. --Eugene Holley Jr.

awesome quintet...legendary recording.........2007-06-20
Miles Davis first recording with Columbia Records. Miles, trumpet, John Coltrane, tenor saxophone, Philly Joe Jones, drums, Red Garland, piano, and Paul Chambers, bass. If there was a jazz Hall of Fame(why isn't there one?) they all would be in it. From that first note of 'Round About Midnight(a Thelonius Monk composition) this album just blows you away. Add this to your jazz collection and you'll find yourself listening to it over and over. A masterpiece. If DaVinci played jazz, it would sound something like this. I put this one along with Porgy and Bess and Kind of Blue as the essential Miles.
jazz and why it's hot.......2007-03-10
This 'Round about Midnight, is not as good as some of the jazz I've heard. It sounds like Miles just got out of a treatment center and he simply asked John Coltrane to help him up.I think jazz should be free flowing improvised and jazz man, you know. Example, John Coltrane's: Love Supreme.
It's Miles at his best............2007-01-10
What can I say...It's Miles at his best.A must have for any jazz lover.
A Miles Davis Masterpiece (Review Based On Original Tracks Only).......2006-08-06
There are great Miles Davis records (Milestones, E.S.P, Sketches of Spain), and then there are unforgettable ones. Along with Kind of Blue, 'Round About Midnight falls into the "unforgettable" category. Why? First and foremost, the title track, while very good performed by Monk, is found in its definitive version on this record. Miles' brooding muted trumpet sets the melody. Suddenly, the track explodes in a burst of energy and Trane completely steals the spotlight with ione of those solos that make him the best saxophonist in history. After that, it's back to the unforgettable melody. Ah-Leu-Cha picks the pace up severely, some very interesting chord progressions on that one. A fine reading of one of Bird's best. Things slow down again with the ballad All of You, again Miles plays the melody expressively, and Trane solos furiously during his spots. Standard Bye Bye Blackbird comes next, and I can say without a shred of doubt in my mind it's the best song on the album. If you can't tell it's a classic by the opening piano solo, you're beyond all help I can give you (which, to be fair, isn't much). Tadd's Delight is the closest this album comes to a weak song, and even then it has a nice melody. Dear Old Stockholm closes things out, and though normally I'm not a fan of Stan Getz, I love the group's reading of this tune (particularly that harmony part... it will stay in your head forever!) The CD reissue comes with four bonus tracks (Two Bass Hit, Little Melonae, Budo and Sweet Sue Just You), which range from brilliant (Little Melonae) to average (Sweet Sue).
One last thing I'd like to comment on is the album's remaster. Up until a few days ago, I had only heard this album on a scratchy old vinyl. And while normally I don't really notice sound quality (except if it's painfully obvious), the remastering job for 'Round About Midnight is excellent.
The Beginning and the End.......2006-07-16
Miles' debut album for Columbia Records - and the last LP by his original quintet - is very much in the same vein as the trumpeter's final Prestige sessions, which were in fact recorded almost simultaneously. There's nothing really new here - even the title track had already appeared on a Prestige LP in a nearly identical version - but the Maestro and his sidemen (John Coltrane on tenor sax, Red Garland on piano, Paul Chambers on bass and Philly Joe Jones on drums) play with verve and conviction, stamping their collective personality on the last all-covers program in Davis' catalogue. While subsequent releases such as MILESTONES and KIND OF BLUE are undoubtedly superior on all levels, 'ROUND ABOUT MIDNIGHT still deserves a place on any Miles Davis fan's shelf - even if the only thing distinguishing it from its predecessors is the record label.

An Artist For All Time.......2006-08-04
Kenny Burrell never had the same recognition as Wes Montgomery. But this often happens with a great musician who stays true to their music and refuses to go commercial.
With selections like "A Streetcar Named Desire", "Make Someone Happy", "I Think It's Going To Rain Today", "Since I Fell For You", "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life", "Blues In The Night", and Joe Sample joining in on "Round Midnight" nothing could be more sublime!
Even today as Kenny performs, his music is as brilliant as ever. As of this writing, Kenny is still going strong performing his great and soulful songs. A must-have cd for any Kenny Burrell fan.
The Best CD By One Jazz's Greatest Musicians.......2003-08-24
I couldn't agree more with the other reviews written here. This is probably Kenny's best all-around recording. Every note is perfect and the mood and vibe he creates lasts from his very first statement all the way until the last note is played. Over the last twenty-five years I have listened to this recording more than any other I have ever owned. Usually over and over without stop. It really is that good. For some reason I cannot fathom it only gets a moderate review in The All Music Guide and that is a shame because that review probably has caused this recording to become somewhat overlooked. Kenny has other great records and recordings like Midnight Blue, Guitar Forms, Ellington Is Forever and the album he did with John Coltrane are classics but even they can't top this one. This is a must have recording!!! Even for those who are not hardcore jazz fans because the music on this recording is so good it can easily transcend genres.
No Nosense JazzGuitar.......2002-11-29
This is jazzguitarplaying when it is at it s best,,,there is no flashy arrangements just 4 muscicians playing from deep within creating beautiful music. Burrell has the blues feeling and deep rhythm combined with harmonic sophistication and the ability to set a mood with his lyricism... this is very evident in tunes like "Make Someone Happy" and " Since I fell for you"
Fellow jazzguitarist Tal Farlow said on Burrell " I can spot his playing anywhere. His chord conception is wonderful and you are always aware of the harmonic movement in his work. That is particulary evident in his single line string solos..he is just one of the greats"
So much for Farlow...I think that this recording is one of the very best Burrell done..it almost reaches his masterpiece "God Bless teh Child" from the year before.
One little interesting thing is that the Randy Newman song "I Think it is going to rain today" was recorded by Larry Goldings and Peter Bernstein 30 years later and appears on Goldings "MoonBird"
I might be wrong..but I think they heard Burrells version prior to that recording.
This is the meaning of "COOL"!.......2002-02-22
I originally bought it on vinyl back in 1973 when it was first issued. I wore out 2 copies of the vinyl and when i went back for my third copy they told me it had been deleted!!--i nearly cried all the way to my bus stop!!
I remember writing to "Fantasy Records" , begging them to release this one on CD. Well, here it is folks, and i've bought about 3 copies of it just in case they start wearing out again!
Please let me state that if it's lightning speed you like in jazz guitar playing don't consider this c.d.
Although Burrell CAN play at frenetic speeds (check out "BLUE LIGHTS" volumes 1 & II , or "All Day Long/All Night Long" ) this is not his aim.
Burrells goal has always been to acheive feel, soulfulness and emotion and he succeeds EVERY time
whereas hundreds of other guitar players fail miserably.
If you are looking for a beautifully,BLUESY, relaxed setting, with plenty of gorgeous Fender Rhodes electric piano (by Joe Sample ) then this one is yours. The atmosphere Kenny creates here well matches the album title 100%! It's high quality "dinner jazz" but with a cool blues edge.
If you are a rock or blues guitarist reading this review please note this is the guy who was a HUGE influence on Stevie Ray Vaughan (listen to Stevies homage to him on the track "Chitlins Con Carne" on his c.d. "The Sky is Crying"!)
and Kenny Burrell influenced Hendrix as well who was noted as saying " if there's anyone i would love to sound like it would be Kenny Burrell" What drew these two rockers into Kenny's space was Burrells unique feel for the Blues. Even though he plays Blues with the sophistication and finesse of a classical guitarist Kenny still maintains a downhome, lonesome edge. Kenny, Herb Ellis and a few others are the only surviving jazz guitarists from the "old school" and constitute a direct link with Charlie Christian . Listen out for the first track " Streetcar Named Desire"...and an INCREDIBLY BEAUTIFUL lonesome, terrace- top setting for Johnny Mercer's " Blues In The Night". Kenny's adaptation of Randy Newmans classic "I Think It's Gonna Rain Today" is soulful.
"Since I Fell For You" has Kenny preaching the Blues again.
You won't be disappointed if you get this CD.
This is one of the very best Burrel recordings........1999-08-13
This often overlooked CD is probably the very best all around recording of Kenny's. It's got everything! It's bluesy and beautiful and the material is very well rounded. The tune "Since I Fell For You" sounds like it could have been written for Kenny and "'Round Midnight" maybe the definitive version of an often recorded masterpiece. Buy this record. You won't regret it.

Miles Davis's long relationship with Columbia began with the 1955-56 recordings heard here, as the trumpeter's suddenly rising career curve was consolidated after the move from the independent Prestige label. The band on this CD is the first of Davis's classic quintets, the extraordinary group with John Coltrane, pianist Red Garland, bassist Paul Chambers, and drummer Philly Joe Jones that still stands as the definitive ensemble in modern mainstream jazz. The music ranges from the smoldering emotions of Davis's distinctively muted ballad performances to the searching quality already apparent in Coltrane's keening horn, while the band's unique chemistry is apparent on "Dear Old Stockholm" and the novel counterpoint of Charlie Parker's "Ah-Leu-Cha."
The Legacy Edition contains four bonus tracks from the original sessions, plus a second disc of live material - one track from the Newport Jazz Fest 1955 (with Thelonious Monk), and eight previously unreleased tracks from the 1956 Pasadena concert. --Stuart Broomer

What have I been missing?.......2006-06-25
Firstly, I am not a jazz fan. This is perhaps because I have heard too many cool people running on at the mouth about the subject (especially about their cult of improvisation), and haven't taken the time to just sit down and have a listen. Well, shame on me! I checked the old rev. of this CD from the library on a whim (there he was, in that devilish red and black light), and wow. I did not hear the novelty of improvisation. I did not hear someone trying to sound different than everybody else. No, I heard sublime interpretations of traditional themes, rather than the chaotic pomposity that my prejudices had warned me against. I had to go buy this marvellous, and quite listenable production, because I didn't want to have to wait to get this breath of fresh air from the library. Buy this for your medicine cabinet; I'm sure the doctor will approve.
The Holy Grail has been found!.......2005-07-08
I never knew that Miles' performance of "'Round Midnight" was recorded. That incredible moment in jazz is caught here and so are LIVE RECORDINGS OF THE FIRST GREAT QUINTET!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is ESSENTIAL Miles Davis!!!!
BUY IMMEADIATLEY!!!
Buy it Again, Anyway. It's way, way too good........2005-06-17
No one should need to have the importance of this disc explained to them and from a sonic standpoint, the quality here is from the same remastered and restored tapes that produced the Miles/Trane box. What takes this elsewhere are the extra tracks from the recording sessions, and they are each terrific, and the second bonus disc with a live date of Miles with Monk delivering an absolutely mystical "Round Midnight," plus a concert from Pasadena California with the Trane quintet.
Regarding the Monk selection, the way that each man inspired the other is perhaps nowhere near so claerly evident as on this track. By itself, it would justify the price. Following with the never before released concert from Pasadena makes the second disc worth releasing on its own merits. The goof-ball MC sounds like such a cornball in his intro to Davis and his band, that you will find yourself squirming in humour. Imagine Jack Benny introducing P Diddy. Actually......
well, anyway, the band kicks in and there is an undeniable energy that they bring to the audience. Hopefully, as is the case with Hendrix, there are lodas of concert tapes from this quintet as well asmany of the other formations Miles put together. Miles was a live player. The studio records were phenomenal, but he knew the dialectics of live performance better than any jazz artist before or after him.
replace your other copies of this essential document. What you are familiar with will delight you, and the new stuff will astound you.

Love This One.......2005-07-02
This has become possibly my favorite CD, at least for now, maybe edging out Joe Pass-- and you have to be damned good to do that for me. Oscar Peterson's control of the piano is one of the most exquisite I've ever heard. In his runs, even though they're at least as rapid as any I've heard from classical pianists-- Mr. Peterson did have classical training for a while until his teacher wisely suggested that he move to playing jazz-- you can hear every single note clean and clear, which I don't always hear elsewhere. Someone mentioned his performance on "Just a Gigolo." This song is full of contrast, and a simple song becomes an exhibition of the universe of human emotion. There are waves of exuberant playing suddenly followed by soft, reflective playing, and it all seems logical. "Laura" is also an example of fine, imaginative piano playing. In the tracks where Mr. Peterson is playing with his trio, the transitions between the solos are some of the smoothest I've ever heard. His trios have a wonderful sense of balance and follow each other perfectly dynamically, knowing how to highlight the soloist to best effect. Unlike so many I've heard who use beautiful music to make jazz, Oscar Peterson is one of the few who use jazz to make beautiful music. I emphatically recommend this CD to those who are studying to play jazz and want to hear some exquisite stuff to learn from; and to those who want to have pleasure from an album of beautiful music to "unwind" to.

Sophisticated and supple hard bop from the summit.......2006-07-23
Kenny Dorham was a musician's musician, the thinking person's trumpet player (though the emotions are personal and deep, even if not instantaneous or obvious). His tone is light but round and always centered, capable of sounding vulnerable and breathy one instant and dynamically brilliant and virtuosic the next. Since Kenny is the least "showy" of trumpet players, my hunch is that this Dorham-led date will not impress the uniniated overly much and that it should probably be purchased after one of his later studio sessions or his dates with Art Blakey ("Live at the Cafe Bohemia") or Horace Silver ("The Jazz Messengers"). Once you've acquired a taste for the Dorham sound--which, incidentally, can be addictive--the pleasures of the present session will be all the more apparent.
Each of the tunes not only features first-rate (if understated) solo work but attention to compositional details that were frequently missing in "hard bop" performances of the era. Listen to the title song--with all of Monk's transitions and intertextual motifs intact--or to "Night in Tunisia," which may be less dramatic and forceful than the version with Clifford Brown and Art Blakey at Birdland but is ten times more musical.
The underrecorded, melodically lithe J. R. Monterose complements K. D. in the frontline as effectively as Hank Mobley, and the overrecorded Kenny Burrell has never sounded more inspired and assured, almost overmatching the more subdued approach of the other players. Bobby Timmons restricts his solo time along with the block chord cliches, turning in some of his most tasteful work on record.
While this may not be "the" Kenny Dorham recording, it belongs in the top 5--which, speaking of the pantheon of all-time trumpet greats, is probably the short list on which Kenny himself deserves mention.
The uncrowned king.......2002-03-20
Kenny Dorham was such a great trumpet player, but even considering the fact, that his recording period spanned about 20 years, starting with important contributions in the forties, when he played with Charlie Parker, Bud Powell and others, it quite seems, that he largely was taken for granted by the wider audience, which paid most of the attention to more glamorous players, namely Dizzy and Miles. But listening to Kenny Dorham's Blue Note recordings you will notice, that he had it all: A beautiful, slightly bittersweet sound, really nice, long lines and a great knowledge about chord-progressions. Of course, he also was a great composer. This latest reissue from the RVG-Series offers for the first time the possibility to really listen to all recorded material from that live-date. You will love it, especially if you already own the two Art Blakey CDs "Life at Café Bohemia", which also feature Dorham at his best. About the personnel of this date, I'd like to notice the presence of Kenny Burrell on some of the tunes. He had finished his first own album ("Introducing Kenny Burrell") just the day before and he sure was in a playing mood. the choice of J.R. Montrose is also a very interesting one. this relatively obscure tenorist really has nice ideas and a pleasant, light sound, somehow similar to Stan Getz or Zoot Sims and he really takes care of business. Bobby Timmons on piano already had his block-chord style, which later would become famous when he was part of Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Sam Jones on bass and the to me completely unknown Athur Edgehill on drums contribute everything necessary for a good groove, so let's say, that I really enjoy this music: The tremendous swinging versions of "K.D.'s Blues", "Night in Tunisia", "Who Cares", a very relaxed "My Heart Stood Still" and gorgous ballad interpretations of "Autumn in N.Y." and "Round Midnight". Considering the originals, I think, that "Monaco" is the most interesting one. It's based on an idea, which first appeared on another Dorham original ("Minor's Holiday") from the above mentioned Art Blakey date and Dorham's first Blue-Note Album, the fantastic "Afro Cuban", which I also reviewed. Enjoy it!
FANTASTIC!!! Classic Jazz.......2002-02-26
I just picked this album up today and I was blown away. First of all, despite being a mono recording, the sound is awesome; clarity and depth are excellent. I have shied away from previous mono recordings, as they tend to get muddied, but this music suffers no such fate. Kenny Dorham sounds as good as I've ever heard him, and Bobby Timmons was just beginning to shine. If you are a fan of classic jazz, this is a must-have for your collection.

Only trust your heart.......2004-03-24
The first three songs on this collection are very pleasant, each one better than the last, then I came to "Only trust your heart". I'm still on that, and after about ten listens I don't know who to admire more: Benny Carter who composed this lovely bossa (found that out from google; he wasn't credited here), Sammy Cahn for the lyrics "just wait for a night/when the stars are all bare/then see if you care", or Gilberto, whose sad, spare voice floats over the piece like a cool breeze in late summer. Not to mention Gary Burton's tasteful work on vibes or Stan Getz on tenor (who, truth be told, sounds like he may have spent a bit too much time in the sun). Just a perfect match between singer and song.
Astrud Gilberto's voice makes you forget where you are!.......2001-12-20
I'll be honest, I heard The Girl From Ipanema on a TV commercial and had to know who that was. I mostly enjoy jazz or classical along with other music styles, but when I put this in the CD player, and heard The Girl From Ipanema I fell in love with this woman. I was scared from that point on that the rest of the album would be a waste of my dollars, but after listening to the album several times through, I can say this was the best cd I've picked up in a long time. I got home from a stressful day at work, put this on, and just sat there listening to the music for hours. It was the most peacful time I have had in months. I must have more! This album is GREAT!

This is my first real taste of this type of jazz and it only left me wanting more. Astrud's voice is amazing and timeless. All of my gen-X friends are scrambling to get their grubby paws on Astrud's work after I played her at a party I threw recently. This is one amazing CD. "Girl from Impanema" is a masterpiece! With collaborations with greats like Stan Getz, this album is a must have for any jazz lover...new or old.
You don't know what you are missing.......2001-04-07
My all time fav. Bossa Nova songs would be "Girl From Ipanema", "Fly Me To The Moon" and "Quiet Nights Of Quiet Stars". This Album contains all of them and other good Astrud Gilberto's works. I you like Bossa Nova and have not got this CD, you don't know what you are missing.

Gourmet Torme.......2005-10-27
I like this jazzy style lots better than his ballads. Ranks with Bennett and Sinatra.
Jazz 'Round Midnight: Mel Torme'.......2005-08-04
Torme' is at his best vocally. There are some "elevator" type arrangements, but even they are a cut above the norm. Most of the arrangements and Torme's style fit like a glove. Nice, easy listening from the "mellow-man".
Classic Slow Jazz With Mel Tormé.......2005-07-21
This was the album where Tormé made "Blue Moon" a real and pure classic to listen and enjoy, the new opening is fantastic.
"Hello Young Lovers" has some of the best subtle jazz brass one will ever here, same goes with "Born to Be Blue". The vocals are solid on every track. The best track though besides Blue Moon must be "Blue and Sentimental" which mixes the hard with soft and the loud with quiet. A great jazz album sung by most likely the greatest singer to ever sing.
smooth flow.......2002-05-06
thank goodness for Night Court&Barry Manilow for mentioning Mel Torme's Great presentation to song&overall depth&talent.this set highlights so much. His voice goes so well with the arrangements here.this set really showcases a Artist that has long been to Underrated to me.enjoy the mellow vibe of Mel Torme.
An Essential Jazz Vocal Disc For Rainy Days and Nights.......2001-02-26
Long the subject of caricature ("Night Court" on TV, "Mountain Dew" ads) and underappreciated as a song writer ("The Christmas Song"), Mel Torme shows the breadth and depth of his lush style on "Jazz Round Midnight." I bought this CD after listening to a performance by Mel on NPR one Sunday morning in the mid nineties. I browsed through the bins at my local record store, and spied this CD in a very thin Torme section. When I got it home and played the disc while cooking dinner, I was stunned. Long a Sinatra/Nat King Cole fan, I had assumed Mel was a novelty act until the NPR piece introduced me to his music and then "Jazz Round Midnight" proved his range and silky-smooth talent. This is perfect "rainy day" jazz, compatible with the most romantic candlelit meal. Listen to Mel plaintively ask "How Did She Look?", a mellow masterpiece; or go driving down country roads on "Moonlight in Vermont"; and I challenge anyone to find a more assured version of "Body and Soul." Face it, Mel was The Man, and deserves to be on the same shelf as Frank, Nat, Ella, and Tony. "Jazz Round Midnight" is perfect anytime of day or night.

These leftovers are as good as the main course!.......2006-01-30
The previous reviewer's peanut butter & jelly analogy hits the spot. This CD is as good as the main soundtrack. Some cuts are from the movie, some are out-takes. I love spontaneous music and the impromptu jam session "Call Sheet Blues" is my favorite track.
Now a plug for the Movie and main Soundtrack:
I had never heard of Dexter Gordon until I watched the movie 'Round Midnight - and I was hooked. If you haven't seen it, you must. Almost all of the actors in the movie are jazz musicians, and they do a GREAT job as well as playing stellar music. Musician's include guitarist John McLaughlin, pianist Herbie Hancock, as well as Wayne Shorter, Ron Carter, Freddie Hubbard and more. Also in the movie (and on the main 'Round Midnight soundtrack) Lonette McKee sings an outstanding version of "How Long Has This Been Going On?". I have never heard of her before, but she is impressive to me!
In closing, I prefer 'Round Midnight over Clint Eastwood's jazz movie "Bird" anyday.
music lover.......2002-10-31
if you own the 'round midnight' soundtrack, this is a must have.
otherwise, it's like peanut butter, no jelly. or a BLT with no B.
or turkey, no dressing. or ham, no eggs. ribs, no potato salad.
oreo with no middle.
Better than it ought to be!.......2000-12-17
This album was recorded as the soundtrack for the film "Round Midnight",which featured Dexter Gordon. However Bernard Tavernier, the director of the film had the foresight to bring in Herbie Hancock as MD, and allowed Gordon a great deal of input into the whole production process, as well as hiring some excellent sidesmen familiar with Dexter's work for the project. The recordings were done mainly at Studios Davout in Paris, with some other work undertaken at Studio Clair, and everybody concerned seemed to have enjoyed the mellow and relaxed atmosphere which is certainly reflected in the quality of the recording. Standouts for me are "Society Red" with Freddie Hubbard on trumpet and "As time goes by" with John McLaughlin on guitar. However there are a couple of tunes which Dexter didn't play on which are also good; a great version of "It's only a paper moon" and "Call sheet blues" which appears to have been recorded spontaneously outside the film sountrack, and which features Wayne Shorter on Tenor Saxophone. Not absolutely essential Dexter, but a must have for anyone who has seen and enjoyed the film from whence it came.

Wow, excellent voice, wish there was more!.......2005-06-10
I heard just a few snippets, and when I fall in love took my breath away. The resonance of his voice was just - wow. I know that is not an educated opinion, but listen to the samples and see if you don't agree! If you like jazz this may be well worth the investment!

Customer Reviews:
Staton 2-Fer.......2005-10-20
Two LPs recorded in 1960 are here together on one CD. Benny Carter arranged and conducted on both, and they are quite different endeavors. SOFTLY consists of all slow, lush ballads, not really the best material or arrangement for Dakota's strength as a singer, which tends more toward blues-inflected tunes and varied tempos. I CAN'T GET STARTED and CLOSE YOUR EYES are typical.
ROUND MIDNIGHT, the second LP included, is better. Ballad tempos still predominate, but we get variety, too. One tune, ALONG ABOUT MIDNIGHT, is dripping with a blues feeling and is one of the best tracks Staton has ever recorded. WILL YOU STILL BE MINE is another highlight.
Thus we have a so-so album paired with a very good one. The excellent things on the ROUND MIDNIGHT album outweigh the disappointments on the SOFTLY one, so this CD is still a plus in my book.
