Customer Reviews:
Decent But Not Essential.......2007-07-12
I have been a Peter Green fan for about 40 years now, dating back to his days with John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. After he later mysteriously left Fleetwood Mac on a personal spiritual quest, I and probably thousands of others religiously scanned the bins at record stores on every visit hoping for his eventual return to music. Then one day, there it was: a new Peter Green album.
Since his return, his solo albums have been mostly hit and miss. But then he teamed with Nigel Watson to form Peter Green's Splinter Group which has over the years issued a steady string of mostly very good but also mostly obscure albums. I did not even know Soho: Live at Ronnie Scott's existed until I was alerted to the fact on one of amazon's music forums. When I looked it up, the songlist seemed interesting, so I ordered it from an amazon partner at a good price.
Though I like the CD, I can't help thinking that a music fan returning today to the music of Peter Green would be much better served by getting one of Splinter Group's studio albums like Destiny Road instead of this. As tasty as the song selection may seem, the realities of the live performances mostly just don't measure up to the studio versions. The songs that work best here are The Supernatural and Albatross, which as you may already know are both instrumentals. Help Me, from disc 2, is probably the strongest non-instrumental piece.
So overall, while this is a decent CD and worth what I paid, I cannot deem it essential for any except a diehard completeist. Though I will enjoy listening occasionally, there are many other Peter Green CDs that deserve more eartime. Compare this to his other work, and you'll hear what I mean.
Will likely satisfy fans of the now defunct Splinter Group.......2006-03-24
The legacy of any band should in part be tempered by its live recordings. Though we are fortunate to this two-CD collection "Soho Live at Ronnie Scotts" by the Peter Green Splinter Group, the session does little to enhance the band's legacy nor does it undermine the studio work.
The clear, crisp recording is a decided plus for this session. You can clearly hear a guitar string scrape or bend, the brightness of the cymbals, the chugging organ, or the multipart harmonies on tracks such as Last Fair Deal Gone Down with splendid clarity.
The first disc, the better of the two, is more up tempo and engaging. Even Black Magic Woman sounds fresh and jaunty while Albatross takes its time and can, if one's imagination rambles, conjure up the image of a long sea journey via the giant bird. The band sounds engaged, tight, and efficient.
The second disc proves a bit of a letdown. It's hard to know what to make of some of the Robert Johnson covers-a couple thrown in would be enough, but five in a row tend to kill the pace and energy of the live show. A less than stellar recounting of Green Manalishi is followed by a too long Goin' Down, which is capped off by an irritating minute of nothing but audience applause and response.
The vocals throughout are at times frail, which in some cases melds with the content, but in other spots, the vocal, whether from Peter Green or Nigel Watson, seem to falter. Both Green and Watson have several bright moments on guitar. The bass seems boomy at times, and one wonders if Neil Murray has already lost interest in the band (he left following this CD). Keyboardist Roger Cotton keeps matters interesting throughout, and drummer Larry Tolfree sparkles. Together, they keep things smoldering on Shake Your Hips.
To recap, "Soho Live" will likely satisfy fans of the now defunct Splinter Group but is perhaps not the best entry point in the band's catalog.

Jazz of highest quality.......2007-06-24
This is my favourite Claire Martin album, the UK's leading female Jazz vocalist. This album has a great selection of material, together with fabulous musicians playing at the top of their game. Claire's unusual choice of material makes the album much more interesting than hearing the usual Jazz standards. Buy and Sell by Laura Nyro is a wonderfully haunting song with a great performance by Claire.
The musicians playing with Claire are all 1st class. Gareth Williams is the leading British Jazz pianist of his generation and his performance on this album mixes modern playing with some blues, particularly on the self-penned 'Worth the Wait'. Clark Tracey and Arniew Somogyi together with various guest musicians provide wonderful support for Claires exquisite phrasing.
The fact that this was recorded live at Ronnie Scotts in London makes all the difference. Claire and the musicians just have a bit more edge to their performances, than is the case with a lot of studio based albums. Once heard you will be hooked!
Live album from Britain's finest jazz lady.......2003-08-16
The tracks for this album were recorded over six days at Ronnie Scott's club in August 1995. Claire's three regular musicians were Gareth Williams (piano), Arnie Somogyi (bass) and Clark Tracey (drums), augmented by Martin Taylor (guitar on Some other time), Anthony Kerr (vibes on Monk's new tune and Wishful thinking) and Mark Nightingale (trombone on I'll close my eyes, Comes love and Something real). Claire sang and played guitar.
Apart from her smoky alto voice, Claire's music is particularly appealing because of her ability to record songs from a wide variety of different sources, generally but not always avoiding the obvious songs, yet always managing to adapt them to suit her own style. So it is with this album, featuring songs previously written or recorded by June Christy (Off beat), Carmen McRae (Would you believe), Laura Nyro (Buy and sell), Phoebe Snow (Something real), Paul Simon (I do it for your love) and Stevie Wonder (Make sure you're sure. The Great American Songbook is represented by Some other time (Leonard Bernstein) and Lost in his arms (Irving Berlin). There are also a couple of original songs - Worth the wait and Wishful thinking.
I did not find this album as immediately appealing as some of Claire's other albums, but it grew on me the more I played it and now I love it. Note that this album is also one of three CD's in the Linn Box - the others are The waiting game and Devil may care - buying the set is cheaper than buying all three separately.

Love at First Sight ~ Laura Fygi.......2003-11-21
This is the second live album of Laura since her first one 'Live' at Carre Theatre in Amsterdam back in 1998. This album of her concert at Ronnie Scott's recorded in March last year is the definitive "live" recording of this remarkable Godness in Jazz. It was recorded on the last night of the concert and it captured Laura at her best in live performance without any of the flaws.
Widely regarded as the world's finest Jazz vocalist today, Laura appeared in this recording in which she perfectly makes for excellent listening. It goes without saying the highly standard sound quality, all the new interpretations make this truly inspirational performance very attractive. Easily the most impressive tracks on here are 'That old feeling', 'All of me', 'Don't it make my brown eyes blue', 'I'll wait for you', 'Just of those things' and some previously unreleased tracks like 'Orange coloured sky', 'Diamonds are a girl's best friend' and 'The nearness of you'. No matter what Laura sings be it Portuguese in 'Corcovado', French in 'For me, formidable' and 'Les Feuilles Mortes' or Spanish in 'La mentira' (bonus track in Asian edition and SACD), Laura's sultry voice will definitely makes you stand still and listen. The power, passion and clarity she has is such a rarity and uniqueness that it makes your very soul sing along. There isn't one track on here that is weaker than the next, and the incredible thing is the variation of the songs that Laura glides seamlessly from flawless English to French, Spanish and Portuguese.
Thoughtful interepretations of the American song book has lost absolutely none of its style or genre and Laura reworks some of her most famous tracks in a new slant to provide an utterly brilliant new fantastic jazzy interpretation and weaves tightly with the spiritually of the standards to give those masterpieces a whole new spin.
For the Asian edition and SACD of this album contain three bonus tracks, 'I love you for sentimental reason', 'What are you doing the rest of your life' and 'La mentira'. All in one word, wonderful.
This is a distinctly smoky late night jazz live album of an amazing beautiful lady. No matter how many times you listen to it, this is no doubt a superb recording. You will not only like it but also love it at first sight.
Looking forward to the release of Laura's DVD at 'North Sea Jazz Festival' recorded in July this year. Guarantee another marvelous live recordings of Laura for all we know she is at her best in her live performance. As a loyal fan of Laura, I am very proud and impressed by her great efforts and enthusiasm for her career.
This is my love, very , very, veritable...........2003-10-23
"Five stars" is mild compliment to this fabulous CD. The selection of songs, bands, and arrangements are all first rated. Our spotlight singer Laura Fygi is nothing short of phenomenom. Buying this album is a must for Jazz lovers.
About half of the songs in this album can be found on other excellent studio albums of Laura"s. Good news is that Ms. Fygi is fully aware that she is singing live this time. Some tricks to Jazz-up the audience are necessary. Most songs in this album are significantly faster and more dynamic than their studio counter parts. Rather than letting listeners totally relaxed in living room couches, Ms. Fygi has balanced the spirit of the original song with the expectation of Ronnie Scott audience for steams and spicies. Good example is "Concorvado" (Quite Nights) by A.C. Jobim. It was very "quiet" in the album "Lady Wants to Know", while "quietness" mixed with animation in this live performance. Ms. Fygi clearly knows where she is heading and how far she will go. This makes her a good singer before she even opens her show.
Many other surprised are offered in this complete package. I am delighted to find ¡¥Diamonds are the girl"s best friend¡¦ in the repotoire. Comparing to Marylyn Monroe girlish expectation of receiving diamonds in the future, Ms. Fygi sang as if she already have the jewelry and was telling her stories from the past. Both versions are great yet different.
Ms. Fygi"s long time music partner and fellow Virgo Hans Vroomans is excellent as usual, providing great support in piano and arrangement, with appropriate solo moments. Most other musicians have performed their duties well, except the Saxphonist Jan Menu was occasionally out of league (or out of mind), maybe due to too much alcohol inhalation. The sound quality is satisfactory, though I wish the percussion could be toned down a bit so it would not overshadow others.
Listening to Laura Fygi changing moods and lanuages throughout a night is an awsome experience, even in my humble apartment. I cannot wait to sit in a crowd and cheer for her, if she ever comes to my town. Before that, I will keep buying her CDs.

Three stars 'cause it's Blakey........2007-03-01
The quest to find quality Blakey recordings made in the '80s is often discouraging, especially since this was a period during which "schooled" players and a "reactionary" musical environment supposedly were working in favor of the great percussionist. Perhaps Bu was letting up on the reigns, content to stoke the fires while his line-ups of alternating Berkley graduates continued to contribute modal riffs disguised as compositions (where were the Golson and Walter Davis Jr. tunes when they were most needed?) and show off all of their Coltrane scales and top tones.
The program is dense, monochromatic, and monotonous--hard bop verging on late 60s free sounds. The addition of Toussaint's tenor saxophone is completely superfluous, especially with Blanchard and Harrison on hand. The game plan for each soloist is the same: start quietly sans percussion and build to an all-out frenzy (like a Metheny show without the production values). The recording is irritatingly bass-heavy (after a while the session sounds like a Plaxico walking-bass solo album.)
Despite the sub-standard program and audio, both Blanchard and Harrison have some good moments while Mulgrew Miller is under-utilized. The CD comes to an inglorious finish when the music is aborted in the middle of the final tune, "I Want to Talk about You." Just as well. This is the worst arrangement and performance I've ever heard of the Billy Eckstein ballad much prized by Coltrane.
