My Heart Belongs To Daddy

Editorial Reviews
Album Description
"My Heart Belongs To Daddy" is a delightful pairing of Judy Robert's singing & piano playing with her father, Bob Loewy's singing & guitar playing. It's a great trip down memory lane, featuring songs that where popular in the era when Bob Loewy was a working musician in the Chicago area.

Featuring: Richie Cole on Alto Sax, Judy Roberts, Piano & Vocals, Bob Loewy, Guitar & Vocals, Jim Cox on Bass, Phil Gratteau on Drums, and Tom Mitter on Flute.

Don't miss out on this charming CD!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

      5 out of 5 stars The BEST Gershwin/Porter album.......2004-02-11

Perhaps I'm romanticizing, but this was THE cd I listened to in high school. The arrangements are absolutely captivating; building new material over the original themes while referencing them so purely. I couldn't imagine a better use of your money than purchasing this album, it will bring you years of joy!

4 out of 5 stars Glowing Coles of Porter..........2004-01-15

I can only comment on the Porter half of this recording, as I own it on original vinyl. It's a mono copy, but you wouldn't know it. As usual, excellent engineering from Mercury, who set standards in the early 60's that still count (IMHO) as best practice.

Frederick Fennell is right at home in the warmth of these beautifully wrought Ray Wright orchestrations. As he should be; Wright's day job was orchestrating for Radio City Music Hall. The sound is lush, the dynamics amazing, the performance spot on. It gets four stars only because I can't justify five, not having heard the Gershwin half.

I suppose that if you can't find a nice copy to play on a good turntable with a warm amplifier, then this CD would do - but then, you miss the excitement of hearing sound you've been taught can only come from a CD, magically floating straight up from ancient vinyl.

Eartha Kitt is at home in cabaret, on the Broadway stage, and in film and television. The versatile performer has done it all in her prolific career, highlighted in this superb collection of studio-recordings from Camden, entitled "My Heart Belongs to Daddy".

This collection is highlighted by her legendary signature-standard "C'est Si Bon", which she made famous in the Broadway show NEW FACES OF 1952. Other highlights in this must-own collection are "I Want to be Evil", "Just an Old-Fashioned Girl", "Careless Love", "Lilac Wine", "Lullaby of Birdland" and "Lazy Afternoon".

Ms Kitt has been seen most recently as the Fairy Godmother in the national tour of RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN'S CINDERELLA, and before that in THE WILD PARTY opposite Toni Collette and Mandy Patinkin.

        A must-own recording for fans.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT SOUNDTRACK INCLUDING A MONROE'S PREVIOULSY UNRELEASED SONG.......2005-12-29

High quality sound. I bought the LP 20 years ago when I was 18. Now I have this great CD which has 13 tracks (instead of the 8 or 9 tracks included in former soundtracks).
          Jazz, latin music, unforgettable duets...
AND...a never released before version of LET's MAKE LOVE (trio with Montand and Vaughan with Monroe singing lyrics unheard in the other well known version of this song). How come they never released this version before? But what an excitement to discover something new!!
Plus another short version which is the opening credits of the movie. I love it..This CD highlights the obvious flair Marilyn had for singing.

5 out of 5 stars MONROE MUSICAL MASTERPIECE~BRAVO MARILYN!!! .......2005-02-26

By the time Marilyn Monroe made "Let's Make Love" she was a truly awesome legendary figure who was at her peak both artistically and musically and sings magnificent in her own seductive and soulful way in a great set of songs that include a stunning Cole Porter classic plus an impressive selection of originals composed especially for this great musical by none other than the legendary team of Sammy Cahn & Jimmy Van Heusen and sadly they don't write them like this anymore! Studio orchestrations are richly varied going from a loose jazz sound with classic latin rhythms to lush romantic backings for Marilyn and her excellent co-stars that include British Pop Singer Frankie Vaughan and French Actor Yves Montand in his first starring role in a major US film. Opening with a fun and playful version of the luscious title song "Let's Make Love", Marilyn then lauches into a classic reading of the Cole Porter masterpiece "My Heart Belongs To Daddy" and brings things out of this standard and goes places that nobody else ever thought of...an amazing soul-stirring performance that easily stands as one of the very finest of Miss Monroe's all too short but totally brilliant career. When this film was released in 1960 it was a huge success with us baby-boomer teens who went to see it and many of us had the original vinyl soundtrack (I still have it!) and fell in love with Marilyn who did this wonderful romantic musical comedy and the classic "Some Like It Hot" back to back!!! With this wonderful score now on compact disc sounding better than ever with additional bonus songs I am sure that many will discover or re-discover that magic of Marilyn who still is incomparable and the brightest star of them all being pure magic on the Silver Screen...and way ahead of her time creating a work that is clearly the forerunner of films such as "Cabaret" and strongly influencing artists such as Madonna...Marilyn is at her best with Frankie and they are superb together in "Specialization" and the jazzy interlude "Strip City" has great keyboards mixed with an awesome kettle drum arrangement that is amazing. Marilyn and Frankie are sublime in a terrific duet version of the title song and "Let's Make Love" features a sultry Marilyn vocal that is tops and wonderfully complimented by a big band studio arrangement that flows and becomes latin for its introduction of Yves Montand whose French charm fits well into the mix...a charming and romantic Frankie Vaughn is captivating with Marilyn in the tour-de-force "Incurably Romantic" which again finds Marilyn superb and in top form...this song is reprised as a duet with Yves and Marilyn who are charming and winning together making this a collection a keeper...instrumental interludes such as "Christmas Eve Waltz" are fascinating and add to the great feel of this superb soundtrack classic which somehow has strangely been overlooked except by us real Marilyn connoisseurs who know that entertainment like this will never happen again as there was only one Marilyn Monroe! Closing is an intoxicating version of "Let's Make Love" by Marilyn and Frankie that show that talent like this is a once in a lifetime thing and I am glad greatness such as this was in mine!!!! Bravo Marilyn Monroe~your voice made love to us unlike any other and your beauty is eternally breathtaking...and you are loved and missed so very much!

3 out of 5 stars June Havoc sings third-rate Cole Porter score.......2005-04-13

MEXICAN HAYRIDE isn't Cole Porter's finest hour (KISS ME KATE is most definitely his masterpiece) nontheless this score offers some charms. June Havoc, in one of her rare recorded musical theatre roles, is dynamite with "There Must Be Someone for Me". "Abracadabra" is quite good too. Corrina Mura and her lush operatic voice suits the intriguing "Sing to Me, Guitar". MEXICAN HAYRIDE opened on Broadway in 1944 and ran for a solid 481 performances (Havoc left the show early to take the lead in the musical version of SADIE THOMPSON).

Decca Broadway has filled out the CD with `Cole Porter Songs Sung by Mary Martin', an early album of Miss Mary which features her incantory renditions of "I Get a Kick Out of You", "Let's Do It" and a recreation of her star-making number "My Heart Belongs to Daddy".

3 out of 5 stars Cole Porter songs from a forgotten hit........2004-09-29

Cole Porter's 1944 Broadway hit MEXICAN HAYRIDE was pretty much forgotten as soon as it closed. Decca's mini-album covered eight of the hit songs by stars June Havoc, Wilbur Evans and Corrina Mura. For some reason teh show's comic lead Bobby Clark was not invited to the recording sessions. His big number "Count Your Blessings" is sung here as a solo by June Havoc, and "Girls" is sung here by Wilbur Evans. (Such changes were common in the early days of original cast recordings.) To fill out this short selection Decca has included a rare album of Mary Martin sining Cole Porter. All in all a worthwhile package though hardly essential listening.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent singer actress from a bygone age.......2003-06-04

Although Mary took a long time to make her breakthrough, she eventually had a long and successful career as singer and actress. This particular compilation focuses on the early part of her career.

The set opens with My heart belongs to Daddy, her breakthrough song - it made the top ten in the American pop charts. Her biggest hit, I'll walk alone, is also included. Bing Crosby and Jack Teagarden join Mary to sing about The Waiter, the porter and the upstairs maid. Bing also duets with Mary on Wait till the sun shines Nellie.

There are many other excellent recordings here, some taken from the shows in which Mary performed. The booklet provides a great overview of Mary's career but says little about the actual recordings on this CD. Nevertheless, it's the music that counts and this collection proves that Mary was one of the finest singer actresses of her time, along with Judy Garland and Ethel Merman.

4 out of 5 stars Our Heart Belongs to Mary...forever.......2002-03-13

Being a lifelong Mary Martin fan, perhaps I am a bit too forgiving, but this album is truly a gem.Although some of the recordings suffer somewhat from low-tech "bugs", Mary's spirit and talent shine through each number. For those old enough to have remembered her as a force on Broadway and early TV, this is a bonanza. Her duets with legendary Bing Crosby are a delight and will evoke wonerful memories of these late unique talents.Being a Texan myself, I always felt that Mary was 'one of ours" but with this retrospective of her vocal talent, I believe she was truly "one of all of us" I don't know if they make them like this anymore and we are poorer for it. Treat yourself to this album nd enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning of a Legend.......2000-11-13

Mary Martin was one of the greatest, most versitile performers of the Broadway and London stages. This recording takes you back to where it all stated. Mary was young, fresh and anxious to find her place in the entertainment business. She sings classics of Berlin, Porter, and many of the early Broadway composers. This is a collector's item for those of us who fell in love with Mary through the years and treasure the great gift of entertainment she gave us.
