The Thomas Crown Affair is a caper story with a new (well, retread) twist: Pierce Brosnan plays a guy who can afford virtually anything, so he attempts to get something he can't, a Monet. It's a movie fitting of a polished, well-produced soundtrack, which is exactly what this disc delivers. Sting's previously unreleased version of the famous theme song "Windmills of Your Mind" lacks the suave psychedelic flair of Noel Harrison's original version (he won an Oscar for the song on the original Thomas Crown soundtrack), but should please his fans. Nina Simone's classic "Sinnerman" is a welcome contribution, and Wasis Diop's "Caban La Ka Kratchie" is a steamy world fusion tune. Bill Conti's score--varying from pulsating piano compositions to smooth jazz--rounds out the rest of this short soundtrack. For most, the real attraction here is the Sting cut. --Jason Verlinde

4 out of 5 stars The Sinnerman or the whole affair?.......2007-05-20

I wanted to get The Thomas Crown Affair Soundtrack for one reason only: The Sinnerman by Nina Simone, because I was not able to find this particular version anywhere else. And yet this song...it is simply great. When I first heard it, I could feel shivers down my spine, and have felt the same ever since. But to be completely honest, I do like the rest of the CD. Unfortunately, there is not much left. The soundtrack is rather short (31' approximately), and...well...jazzy, which is not exactly my cup of tea, but still, it was worth getting it. It is a nice, relaxing listening. Apart from The Sinnerman, of course. That one makes me feel exhilirated and strong and...well, happy.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD representing most of the movie's music.......2007-03-11

This is a great CD containing most of the melodies and songs from the movie except for the Latin dance during the black and white party. I especially enjoyed Sting's Windmills Of Your Mind which is not released on any other CD (I believe) and Nina Simone's "clapping" song. One of the rare soundtracks that has all great songs and melodies in one!

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Crown Affair Soundtract.......2007-01-20

The CD was brand new, and I love the songs, it came in the mail extremley fast, even though it was a week before Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars Just as Smooth as the Movie.......2006-09-25

This is a fantastic score and I highly recommend it. While Sting does not do the best ever recording of "Windmills of Your Mind," it's still very good, relaxing, and sets up the rest of the CD well.
Simone's "Sinnerman" is either something you do or do not like. Personally the vocals get to be repetitive and irritating after a while, but the piano and hand-clapping are definitely something to be heard, especially since they bring back the enjoyed memory of Brosnan and the other men clad in their "business suits and bowler cap" shuffle game for the film's final climax. I tend to skip the vocals, but still listen to the track.
"Everything is Never Quite Enough" is one of my favorite songs on this CD, even though there are so many different languages in the lyrics. The sounds and beat are incredible, stirring all the right emotions, while the lyrics are sultry and perfectly placed together. As said before, there are different languages sung in the song (the woman sings English, but the male sings French, his native African dialect, and some various others), but they all compliment each other and it is not at all annoying. It is excellent.
"Kaban a la Kratchie" is another track that you like or you don't...it depends on one's mood. Overall it is enjoyable and nostalgic of the Caribbean and the stunning photography of the scenes filmed in the tropics, but you need to be in a light-hearted mood and "enjoying the day" attitude to fully appreciate the song.
The rest of the songs are all Bill Conti's music and his score - no lyrics. The basic theme is reheard in the music, but the pace and background instruments are certainly different so you can listen to the entire CD without getting bored and can feel your pulse quicken with the music. The score certainly brings back the movie and the entire attitude of sophistication, intelligence, and smoothness. A great CD to listen to while driving, working, reading, basic background music, or for just plain listening to.
I highly recommend it and you will most certainly not have any buyer's remorse.

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Crown Affair music from the movie.......2006-09-05

I found the music very uplifting and fun to listen to and it reminds me of the movie. I can listen during exercise and get my heart going for the day. The artists on the CD are great and I have searched for more CD's related.Sinnerman is one of my favorite songs/soundtrack.

4 out of 5 stars A good inroduction to Ms. Simone........2007-03-15

Comprehensive survey of her career marred by some poorly mastered/re-mastered tracks. Would sound much better on vinyl than CD.

5 out of 5 stars Superlative Collection For a Superlative Talent.......2007-03-01

If anyone has made the unfortunate mistake of ignoring Nina Simone's music, or if you're of a certain age and have not been exposed to her immense talent, this is the CD package for you.

Anthology spans the length and breadth of Ms. Simone's great career, and charts the music of an artist who refuses to be categorized or pigeonholed. Her music is gospel, jazz, funk, traditonal, folk, pop, and so much more. Every song is a gem, but particular standouts are My Baby Just Cares For Me, The Other Woman, Black is the Color of My True Love's Hair, Why? (The King of Love is Dead), See-Line Woman, and her version of I Put A Spell On You.

Hard to catergorize but even harder to ignore, Nina Simone's talent is on rich display on Anthology.

5 out of 5 stars Evergreen.......2007-01-10

E' un cd che bisogna avere nella propria collezione.

Da riascoltare in qualsiasi periodo. Resterà sempre bello.

3 out of 5 stars a review by a rock fan.......2006-12-16

I bought this out of curiousity. I was no Nina Simone fan. I am too immature and brutish to be able to appreciate classic, "torch song", slow, and ballady piana driven songs.

I am also a big music fan. I love to listen to what shaped and influenced contemporary artists. I enjoy angst-driven female performers ( a la Kate Bush, Tori Amos, Ani Difranco, Janis Joplin). I dig real, I mean true emotional music.

Nina Simone has historical significance. Seh has a strong, cult following of fans who really know their stuff.

I decided to give it a try. The consensus is that this is THE anthology to get. I believe I have found a new artist to like.

I do not get into the slow stuff. I live a wonderful life and I do not have to empathize with a slow, syrupy, piano ballad. I skip those.

I do like the jazzy, peppier stuff. Some of the songs constitute blues. That is good too.

What I enjoy the most is the sparce, truly raw sound of many of these songs. They are under produced (which I like).

"My baby just comes for me" is a famous song, used commercially all of the time. It has a terrific rolling bass line and the piano playing is stunning. "Mississippi Goddam" is a live recording of a blues driven tune. Its pretty cool.

"Glory of love" is a peppy song of elation that is hummable. "To be young, gifted and black" is a wonderful, folk tune that sounds so earnest.

'Rich Girl" is a cover of the Hall & Oates song and it does the tune justice. In fact, disc 2 has a lot of covers and I find those, more recent songs more enjoyable and comtemporary then what is on disc 2. She also does a cool version of teh Bee Gees "To Love Somebody".

My favorite tune is "I wish I knew it would feel to be free". This is the most rock sounding tune. The instrument intros, at the beginning are cool.

I am a fan now and this is definetly interesting listening.

5 out of 5 stars Want a Nina Simone Compilation???...(This is the one to Buy!!!).......2006-06-09

There's some much to be said about Nina Simone, that it's a little difficult to know where to begin. Born in the 1950's....few singers have been able to effortlessly shift musicals styles as seamlessly as she did. Proficient in singing, soul, jazz, pop, blues, gospel, and Broadway, R&B...much like the other great female vocalist of her generation (Aretha Franklin, Ella Fitzgerald, Dusty Springfield), when she sung a song....irrespective of whether it was a cover version or not. She had the uncanny ability to make the song and sound totally hers.

There have been a great many Compilations compiling her prolific output, and a great many more sprung up, after her untimely death in 2003. Most are adequate, but due to licensing issues, most have notable exceptions missing due to her work on various labels and the permission to source songs from a variety of labels, largely proves to be too problematic for most compilers. Well...things are different this time, because for this Anthology (by the RCA Label),they have taken the considerably thankless task of collecting all the essential tracks from the multitude of labels she worked with over her career, as well as including a handful of unreleased tracks.

So while you get the more familiar tracks that are considered essential for any Nina Simone compilation to even get a look in ("I Loves You Porgy, My Baby Just Cares for me, I Put a Spell on You, Sinner Man, To Love Somebody, Don't let me be misunderstood"). Which is fine for the casual fans that want a fairly brief, and not to involved summary of her work. But the real benefit of forking out the extra money for this Anthology, is the previously little heard, obscure or important tracks that don't usually make it onto the majority of the cheap compilations floating around. So this Anthology goes several steps beyond the regular compilations by including tracks from Live performances, stunning individual tracks cherry-picked from her lesser known albums, or absolutely breathtaking tracks such as "Funkier Than a Mosquito's Tweeter", that doesn't always make compilations (such as Universals excellent "Gold" compilation). As phenomenal a vocalist as Nina was...singing smooth Jazz, or Bittersweet ballads, Yearning Soul, and Brooding Torch songs, and plaintive Blues....most will agree that Nina was at her best when she was pissed-off or rallying against something, and a fantastic selections tracks, chosen here, highlight that fact. What you sometimes find with some of the Nina Simone compilations out there, are that they tend to lend a little bit too much towards certain aspects of her genres that she sung (for instance Soul, Jazz or Blues) but this Anthology gives a truly rounded overview, that Nina was possibly one of the most Versatile singers of her generation, this Anthology covers it all: Blues, Torch songs, Ballads, Jazz, Pop, Soul, Gospel, R&B, Broadway & Hip-hop (Just kidding!!!).

Make no mistake about this...this is arguably the finest Nina Simone collection that money can buy. And short of having to buy a Boxset, nothing else on the market matches this for depth, selection, mood, Arrangement, and versatility. The irony being that this Anthology appeared months after her death, and until then, nothing had previously satisfied in quite the same way as this release does. Bad points??....weeeeell, there is a lot of material here, and its likely to be a little overwhelming for the causal fan, or people that have only really expressed an interest in her work, from hearing one of her tracks on a commercial. This is something that is largely geared towards the enthusiast or long-time admirer of her work, because the more unheard/obscure work is likely to pass over the more casual fans head. And compared to some of the cheapo compilations of her work floating around, it can be a little more expensive...but to be fair, anyone searching on Amazon.com for this particular Anthology, is probably committed to getting the best summary of her work. And without a shadow of a doubt, this is it!!! (Absolutely essential)

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-07-12

this is an awesome cd. its's a little trancey, a little hip-hoppy, a little drum and bassy, a little disco. every track is wonderfully remixed! i had it on repeat for days after i bought it. best track is "to love somebody" followed by a close second by "the look of love"

2 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment, at least for me........2007-06-10

I love Nina Simone and her music so much and have enjoyed all of the re-issues, collections and even dualdiscs that were released by Legacy following her unfortunate death. This one is an exception.

I found out about this release about a month before its release and counted down the days. The idea seemed so ingenious. (I absolutely love the cover, too.) I guess I got it with the wrong expectations. I was thinking it would be like the wonderful Motown Remixed album, but what I got was very different. All of the mixes sound the same to me. They are very long, drawn-out and repetitive house remixes with Simone's vocals buried or hidden somewhere in the mix after about two minutes of anti-climactic beats. It's quite sad because this seems more of a showcase of the mixers than the voice of Simone. Not right. The only song I enjoyed on here was the remix of "Ain't Got No - I Got Life."

Also, there is no booklet. All the other Legacy releases had great booklets with interviews, biographies, or memories from friends and family. I was quite disappointed that there wasn't one present here. The CD is housed in a nice digipak and great artwork, though.

So, down to the point: if you like house music, then this is probably for you. If you're thinking something different when you hear 'remix' and your main focus is on the artist, then this probably isn't. I'll stick to the good ol' originals, thank you.

I have been listening to Nina Simone for 20 years, before it was cool! I think this album of remixes for the most part, are true to the spirit of her music. If you are a Nina Simone fan, you'll appreciate this album. Of course, not as good as her originals, but they are fun.

1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awful.......2007-04-01

It is difficult to imagine a Nina Simone cd that I wouldn't like, but here is one. You often can barely hear her over the lousy, reimagined, music. Don't wast your money; buy a real Nina Simone cd.

5 out of 5 stars World Class Music from a World Class Talent.......2007-05-29

The great author James Baldwin once stated that "the artist has always been a disturber of the peace in some way." When we hear Nina Simone sing with composed outrage such songs as "Mississippi Goddam," and "Work Song," in protest against the overt racism practiced during the 1960s in the southern U.S., we know that hers was indeed a politically charged consciousness. The singer's recording of "Mississippi Goddam" was so controversial when first released that Simone would come to attribute the decline of her career in the U.S., and her relocation to France, to the fallout that followed. However, the 20 songs gathered here on FEELING GOOD, THE VERY BEST OF NINA SIMONE, demonstrate that the greater range of her musical talents went far beyond social or political protest.

Trained as a classical pianist at the famed Juilliard School of Music, Simone was an extraordinary interpreter of song lyrics as well as of musical genres. In the title track of this CD, she draws listeners into an inspired celebration of life with a song that dozens of artists are now covering in 2007 (please note review of Randy Crawford's "Feeling Good.") She can croon seductively and vulnerably in songs like "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood," "Ne Me Quitte Pas," and "I Put a Spell on You." And yet she can also go straight to church on the gospel presentations "Take Me to the Water" and "I'm Going Back Home." Talent of such amazing caliber doesn't pop up every decade. This generous sampling of Simone's genius makes one very glad she came along and gave the world as much as she could when she did.

4 out of 5 stars Musical Gumbo from a Class Act.......2007-04-06

I bought this CD right after seeing the Doolittle girl (American Idol 2007 favorite) perform "Feeling Good". That song hooked me! "Feeling Good" (soul), "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" (pop), "I Put a Spell on You" (blues), "Love Me or Leave Me" (jazz) are my favorites and worth the price of this CD. "Mississippi Goddam" (awful) is the low point of this "disjointed" compilation disc. This CD is also interesting for Simone's excellent interpretations of Billie Holliday's classics, "Don't Explain" and "Strange Fruit". Stir in a little French a' la Edith Piaf, "Ne Me Quitte Pas", and gospel, "Take Me to the Water", and the listener has musical gumbo from one classy lady that defied all catagories.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice.......2006-11-10

Trying to get to know Nina's music more and this was an excellent choice.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2005-02-04

My father was given this cd as a gift; not his cup of tea... I'll forgive him that, but this album changed my outlook on soul. More sophisticated than motown, more alive than Loussier. "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood" and "Love Me or Leave Me" utterly gutting!

One of the most inspired cobbled-together-from-a-stack-of-records soundtrack albums since Pulp Fiction, The Big Lebowski matches the goofily ramshackle spirit of the Dude, the hero of its celluloid companion. While offering Bob Dylan's luv-addled "Man in Me" together with the Gipsy Kings' redefinitive "Hotel California" and the psychedelic-era Kenny Rogers nugget "Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In)," Lebowski also gives longer play to some cuts barely sampled in the film, including Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings." Whether taken as a Coen brothers mix tape, a one-album CD carousel, or an apropos souvenir of one wiggy flick, this is a smart, eclectic buy. --Rickey Wright

this is a fantastic album, if you like ecclectic music, that is. easily one of my favorites.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad... but missing something........2007-04-17

This cd definitely has some good points. A great song by Dylan from the opening credits and my favourite, "Dead Flowers" done by Townes Van Zandt. But tremendously written by Jagger and Richards. Funny how my faves are from the start and end of the film. Between these two songs and a rousing "Hotel California" by the Gypsy Kings, I'm happy enough, but oddly, no Creedance. What am I gonna listen to while reaching for that joint I dropped in my lap in the car?

3 out of 5 stars 8-miles high track... better in movie........2007-03-19

The song that goes with the Treehorn dream sequence in the film (Kenny Rodgers et al "Tripped on a Cloud/ 8-miles high") was better in the movie, as the version on the cd is a poor original edit, with ackward reverses (and I like reverses, when not halfway through a measure...- for example, the reverse that opens it up is fine, the one three quarters through or so, you see, is not.), half measures chopping up the rhythm and in general either hastily done or naively... I've toyed with the idea of re-editing it myself in a track editor, but I'll just delete it from my player, because I'm lazy. The other tracks are good, but with a few odd ones like the feminist chant song- play this at your next Halloween party/[...]. I have loads of creedence, so not missing that. the Gypsy Kings' "Hotel California" is the best track, much better after first listen as anyone who has watched Lebowski more than a few times will be surprised by the new verses at first. "The Man in Me", if you don't already have it, isn't exactly representative of Dylan's work in large, but is a nice ditty. The Mancini song is filler. Elvis Costello's "My Mood Swings" rocks, and I'm glad it was included despite being minutely used in the film. Anyway, it's a good cd all in all, but only for "Hotel California", and "My Mood Swings"... otherwise the Kenny Rodgers' song is bad, should have been re-edited... Probably the reason it was obscure to begin with... The Man in Me is widely available. My advice... wait and find Gypsy Kings elsewhere. Same for Costello and Dylan. Not the best playing mix.

5 out of 5 stars Soulfully Pleasing!!.......2007-04-03

In this album, Nina Simone touches the soul. Actually all of her albums do, thanks to her unique voice. She keeps things interesting by switching from slow tempo ballads to up-beat funky jams. I recommend this album to anyone who appreciates a strong, sensual and soulful woman = Nina Simone.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential PowerVoice.......2007-02-10

Ten or so years ago, when I lived in wild and wikkit El Lay, I was having drinks with a client at the Beverly Hills Four Seasons (which as we all know, is NOT in Beverly Hills proper, but just across the street on Doheny). As we sat there, my client and I heard a woman (man?) talking just out of eyesight. The voice, while not loud, cut through the pre-cocktail hour buzzle like a small frigate---clean, strong, and distinctive. She wasn't being loud, it was just that that voice...that voice. My client persuaded me to go find out who was speaking, as we were mesmerized. I went into the next little salon off the bar area and saw an elegant black woman talking with an earnest young white man in his first grown-up suit, in his first grown-up A&R job (probably fresh from USC business school). She was talking and he had the most incoherent look on his face. In retrospect, I think he had never met someone like her, and of course, he never will again. I hope he appreciated her. I asked, "Excuse me, but your voice is so distinctive---it sounds very familiar. Do I know you?" She stopped her narrative, languidly looking up at me, extended her hand in a regal but not royal way, and simply said, "I am Nina Simone."

I have to admit that I had heard of her, but couldn't have named one song she'd recorded. Even in the hip 80's and 90's, she was radically underappreciated and heard in the States. Needless to say,(and this was way before amazon.com et al)I raced to Tower and bought several of her recordings. This recording is a favorite, and the more I listen to this amazing singer, the more I wonder why she never had a wider American audience. Her singing, like her speaking, was so very distinctive and mesmerizing. You may not want to, but you cannot help yourself from stopping to listen. I have had more prople ask me "Who's playing?" when one of her songs comes up in the mix.

Her take on any song is memorable. Her voice has a resonant quality unlike the thin, reedy, over-produced songbirds on the charts today. Most modern singers in any genre seem hell-bent on showing off what their voices CAN do. It's like nude scened in a movie: gets your attention, but does nothing to move the plot along. Same with all the vocal melisma of current artists---all the shreiking does nothing to sell the song. With La Nina, it is just pure singing, straight out and true.

Try this album. You may not like it at first. Her voice is unique and requires attentive listening. But like dark chocolate, which might taste bitter at first, somehow seduces you and milk chocolate becomes a little ho-hum. So it is with Nina Simone. You may not want to play her for your next rave, but with friends over for drinks or dinner, Nina playing in the next room, soon everyone will be asking, "Who's playing?" And you can turn on a new audience to an incomparable, unique voice.

5 out of 5 stars A great CD for what it was.......2007-02-08

Nina Simone is someone that put out so many albums, it would not be financially practical to try to collect them all. This compilation CD does show her wearing many different hats through different eras of music. For example, she does some good Blues work on "Do I Move You?" and a good live performance on "Mississippi Goddamn."

Some pieces are more vocal, and others are more piano driven/ instrumental, and that versatility is enjoyable.

For me, this has been a good introduction to Nina Simone and likely all of her that I will need to buy. I believe that this compilation has been sufficiently broad to stand on its own in a CD collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great quality CD.......2007-01-11

Since I was not familiar with Nina simone's work, I was very happy to have a good sample of her most popular songs. She has an extremely expressive voice and a truly out of the ordinary range. Her piano playing is also really good. The recording on this disc are clear and well mastered (and I am an audiophile, pretty picky about this kind of things.).
Anyway, when I learned that we lost this disc, and although we did buy some other recordings of her, I reordered it. I wanted to have this particular set of songs from Nina Simone. A great buy!

5 out of 5 stars Mezmerizing.......2006-03-29

I purchased this CD and its like nothing I have ever heard. Soft soulful sophisticated. Its in a stack of amazing artists in my cd rack next to Billie Holiday, Eva Cassidy, Ella Fitzgerald, Melody Gardot, Ray Charles, and Cole Porter.
Just that good!

Amazon.com essential recording

With characteristic willfulness, Nina Simone plunged into a range of songbooks and styles between 1966 and 1973, when she recorded nine LPs for RCA. This two-disc overview demonstrates just how unpredictable and headstrong the seething songstress was during a period that was tumultuous for Simone personally and for society in general. Top 40 covers ("Mr. Bojangles," "To Love Somebody") mix with rock (Dylan's "Just Like Tom Thumb's Blues," George Harrison's "Here Comes the Sun") and pop standards ("Since I Fell for You," "My Man's Gone Now"). An increasingly politicized perspective informed Simone's late-'60s work. Her friends included Black Power firebrands H. Rap Brown and Stokely Carmichael, and she made no attempt to disguise her militancy. "The King of Peace is dead. I ain't about to be nonviolent, honey!" she announces on this collection's "Martin Luther King Suite," which was recorded live one day after the civil rights leader's assassination. While a number of selections included here can also be found on RCA's two volumes of Essentials, this lovingly assembled survey (which includes five previously unreleased recordings) captures the High Priestess of Soul in all her unshackled glory. --Steven Stolder

5 out of 5 stars She Touches Your Soul..........2006-06-20

I first heard Nina Simone in the movie "Point of No Return".. In it was Sugar In My Bowl and Here Comes the Sun. I was just blown away by how much emotion was put into each word, each note.. It's like she puts HERSELF into her singing- it's AMAZING. I am only 25, so I don't know all of the older music.. but Nina Simone really caught my attention. I can't think of any group or singer today that really captures the raw emotions in the songs like she does. I know this CD is a little costly, more than I would usually pay for a cd, but I LOVE it and I think it was well worth the price and more.

5 out of 5 stars Favorite CDs of my collection.......2003-09-19

This is the set of CDs you want in the car for long rides or on the radio while puttering around the house. Her voice is like warm brandy, something to soothe you after a long day.

5 out of 5 stars A great Artist.......2003-05-11

Nina Simone's 'I want some sugar in my bowl'is one of the greatest examples of how a song can transcend the musical element and become a political messanger, where the message becomes more thn the sum of its parts. There were better pianists that Nina Simone, and certainly prettier voices, but the selection in this CD show that there is no one with such an artistry. She basically invented what could be called the expressive bleat (with any other singer a major flaw). her cry is so direct, her sound so manly yet tender, this cd is a must.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!!.......2003-01-03

She's like an "April breeze". I first heard of her in a movie, "Point of No Return" which was a remake of some Brit film. Anywho, as soon as the movie was over, I ran to the computer to find out if "Nina Simone" was a real singer and not just a "prop" in a movie. Low and behold,,,found her!! Ordered her! Now, I listen to her very often and sit back and enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Wow!.......2007-06-22

This is my introduction to Nina Simone. I heard "Do I Move You" in the 4th season sound track of The L word. I have heard of Nina Simone, but never really bothered to check her out, but I really liked "Do I Move You, " such a cool song, so I decided to buy this CD. It is awesome. I think is it a perfect intro to a great singer. Her voice is so distinct that it can never be copied, and her styling and phrasing is deep. "In the Dark" & "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl," are absolute gems, but the CD overall is excellent. My only complaint is the measly 38 minutes, I think there could have been more songs added, but other than that it's a good CD for starters.

2 out of 5 stars Not even close to being a complete overview.......2007-05-14

While I agree with the reviewer who criticized the album for its short length, I dislike this album primarily because of the selections. In her liftetime, Nina Simone recorded many blues songs, only a mediocre handful of which are represented here. However, there are a few gems, such as "I Want a Little Sugar in My Bowl" and 'House of the Rising Sun" and "Do I Move You?." Only buy if you can get it for under 5 dollars.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album!.......2007-05-13

Short on time. Just trying to offset a lone reviewer who gave this one star! Yes, this is a short album, but there's no filler. My favorite of Nina's albums.

2 out of 5 stars ONLY 38 MINUTES OF MUSIC!.......2007-05-10

This CD is a rip off. Only 38 minutes of music. Furthermore, only half of the songs are worth listening to. Save your money and buy "Nina Simone's Finest Hour" or the two disc "Anthology" CD set.

5 out of 5 stars My Ode to Nina Simone.......2007-06-06

The first time I heard of Nina Simone was from a movie called "Point of No Return," which is a remake of the french film called "La Femme Nikita." Anyway, in it the girl chooses the code name Nina, for Nina Simone, and I thought at the time, whoever Nina Simone is, she must be a pretty cool chick. A year later I meet a guy who's nuts 'bout Nina Simone and somewhere along the way, I became nuts about the guy and this cool chick named Nina Simone.

This is her most accessible album and quite frankly, her best, hence the "Best Of" but truly, hearing the 12 tracks will give you a glimpse of the voice and thoughts of an amazing artist and a courageous woman. I say a glimpse cos like myself after hearing this album will make you want to buy other Nina albums, if you're not already a fan, in hopes of catching more glimpses of this extraordinary woman and her music. Each song is a story, and a story within each song. Her voice is like no other, no one even close. Through her voice you will experience massive emotions, you will fall in love, feel heartbreak, live tragedy. She sings about life, and truth, blunt as it may. Nina Simone is the perfect storyteller and the jazz music that perfectly accompanies her magnificent voice makes for this incredible compilation.

"I Love Yous Porgy" I hear was a big hit for Ms. Simone back in the day and this slow wonder is the perfect preface for the rest of the album.

"The name of this tune is Mississippi Goddam! ...and I mean every word of it." This was (I imagine) the more political side of her and this song blew me away the first time I heard it. Despite the civil rights topic of the song, we also get to see a funnier side of Nina like when she says, "This is a show tune but the show hasn't been written for it, yet." haha! ...All jokes aside though, one can't help but relate to her lyrics, a cry for equality in a world of segregation. "Alabama's got me so upset, Tennessee made me lose my rest, and everybody knows about Mississippi Goddam...Lord have mercy on this land of mine, we're all gonna get it in due time...All I want is equality, for my sister, my brother, my people and me!..."

Every woman can relate to "The Other Woman." This song speaks to every woman, even if she's never been "the other woman." Imagine a song that begs us to ponder the lonliness of the mistress, "...the other woman will always cry herself to sleep, the other woman will never have his love to keep.." and the grief of the woman that's married, "..the other woman is perfect where her rival fails..." There is no voice quite like Nina's and on this song it is full of longing; dreamy and sad, it is not unlike the other woman.

Then we get to the epic 10-minute opus, "Sinnerman." This is her most popular song I think, and it's actually an early spiritual song but I swear hearing this powerful song makes me want to jump out of my seat and shout, "Lord have mercy!" It also brings me to my knees and makes me want to confess all my darkest sins, "Sinnerman where you gonna run to, where you gonna run to, all on that day... I ran to the river, it was bleedin, I ran to the sea, it was bleedin, all on that day..." This is the ultimate redemption song. Oh Nina, you dun outdone yo'self on this one, girl! What a great song.

"Ne Me Quitte Pas" roughly translates to "Don't leave me," and the original was by a French musician named Jacques Brel. This emotional song has been covered by many artists, including many versions in English called "If You Go Away." I don't speak french but a friend who does says Nina's version of this song is not very impressive, mostly due to her french being "amateur, at best." Since I don't speak the language, I don't care whether she pronounces her silent s's or not (haha) but I can tell it's a heartbreakingly sad song, judging by the emotions in her voice as she begs her lover to stay with her.

"See Line Woman" is a song one can't help but tap your foot to. It's reminisce of early dance music, almost disco-y, if you will, and very good.

"I Put a Spell on You" is another song that many other artists have covered but this version is my favorite. The combination of her desperate voice as she sings "I don't care if you don't want me, I'm yours right now.." and the mesmerizing saxophone that accompanies the song throughout is just incredible.

"Break Down and Let It All Out" is of course, every jilted lovers anthem. What to do when the other flees the coop? Yep, break down and let it all out. You'll feel better, and it's good for you.

One of my favorite Nina songs is "Four Women." It tells the stories of "Aunt Sarah," a slave whose back is strong enough to take the pain inflicted on her again and again, "Saffronia," a biracial with a rich white father who forced himself on her slave mother one night, "Sweet Thing," a prostitute with a mouth like wine, and "Peaches," the awfully bitter child whose parents were slaves. I can picture each woman in my mind as Nina's singing bout their sad lives. Her voice just brings these women to life, and one can't help but feel for them.

"Wild Is the Wind" is a very sad, sad love song. This song evokes all kinds of emotions in me, from the softness of the piano to Nina's almost tear-stricken voice, it is deeply melancholy. I love the lines, "Give me more than one caress, satisfy this hungriness...You touch me, I hear the sound of mandolins..."

"Pirate Jenny" is awesome! This song is told like a bed-time story, with suspense, excitement and intrigue. In fact, I often tell the story to my little cousins come bedtime and they get a great kick out of it. The wonder and anticipation on their faces as I'm relaying my rendition of the story to them is priceless.

The last song to round off the album is "Don't Let Me Be Misunderstood." This is a nice song, a happy song that's been covered by many bands since Nina's release of it back in the 60's and a great way to end this most awesome compilation of an album by the most awesome Nina Simone. And with that, I leave you with a quote by Mos Def:

"You may dig on the Rolling Stones, but they could never ever rock like Nina Simone."

Amen.

5 out of 5 stars Excelent!.......2006-08-28

Powerful, classy, jazz does not get any better than this, there are other excelent ones like Charly Parker, Bobby Darin, T. bennet, Diana Krall, even St Germain, etc... i agree, but not any better.

5 out of 5 stars Better than music.......2006-02-04

In this album you can touch and fill the essence of Nina Simone, one of the better early jazz american females you can listen to...

5 out of 5 stars Right up there with Tina Turner...........2005-12-03

This woman has an amazing voice! It is very brash, deep, and soulful! I have just discovered her, and already I think she is right up there with Tina Turner as one of the best soulstresses ever. "Sinner Man", "Mississippi Goddam", and "Four Women" are absolutely fabulous! The best lyric on the whole album: "MY NAME IS PEEAACCCHHEESS!" from FOUR WOMEN.

This is a must own for any serious music collection!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of Nina Simone.......2005-08-02

Nina Simone has been one of my favorite singers and performers for most of my life. To begin a collection of her material again has been a goal for along time. I'm certainly not disappointed with this CD. She's just superb!

I like the blues and I am also a Nina Simone fan. I was not sure if This lady would sing up to my expectations of the blues. She proved me very much wrong.
This is one of the best cd's I have ever purchased of Nina Simone. I really enjoyed, DO I MOVE YOU and THE PUSHER. This lady is a real artist. It sounds to me that she is definately into what she is singing on this cd, and enjoying every minute of it.

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Nina Simone.......2006-08-02

This is such a wonderful CD. I was actually searching another artist when I discovered Nina Simone. After listening to a few music samples, I was intrigued enough to purchase it.
I love it! The fact that this music was recorded decades ago, is a perfect illustration of how timeless her music is. If you like this type of deep bluesy, but not whiny, style, you will not be sorry.

I have always loved Nina Simone's voice and have always thought she made great choices when choosing what songs to cover, and this CD is no exception. As a fan of the blues, I couldn't wait to hear this and I wasn't disappointed. She rocks "The Pusher", and turns Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" into a spiritual. The live version of "Gin House Blues" is incredibly infectious and I keep hitting repeat once its over. This CD is full of gems. Anyone who is a fan of the blues or Nina Simone should own this; no one can sing the blues the way she did.

5 out of 5 stars Luscious, sexy and sincere.......2005-01-27

Wow! Will this woman's voice move you! I love and appreciate her deep voice, raw emotions and understated sexy lyrics. This is not an "in your face" sexy either. It is so much more. I dedicated a few of her songs to my husband stationed in Afghanistan and he was flabergasted and intrigued. He can't wait to learn more about her music.

A couple of her songs do contain social commentary, there is no doubt where she stands on issues but I don't think it overshadows the music.

I could listen to this cd everyday and never tire of it.

5 out of 5 stars Ferocious and moving.......2003-04-22

Today we lost one of the greatest musical artists that ever existed. This has been one of my favorite albums since I got it 3 years ago. I wanted to write this review to encourage those researching Nina (now that she's gone) to get this album! It will knock you out flat on the floor. "Do I Move You" is down-and-dirty blues (a real eye-opener to those who peg Nina as a jazz singer), as is "Blues For Mama" (probably the first song that turned me on to Nina). "My Man's Gone Now" is downright hair-raising, topped off with a chilling vibrato that only Nina could deliver. Nina's take on Dylan's "I Shall Be Released" reveals a sharp pain to the song that Rick Danko and The Band came very close to in their brilliant version.

The whole album is great, including the rousing live version of "Gin House Blues" at the end. Nina has a great body of work, and these songs are as good as anything else she has done. Put it at or very near the top of your "must-have" list for Nina recordings. Thanks for the great music, Nina.
