Inspired by director Rob Marshall's Oscar-triumphing screen adaptation of the venerable Fosse/Ebb stage musical, this anthology of emblematic 20's and 30's pop and jazz fare not only evokes the true musical roots of its big-screen inspiration but bring the era to nervous, saucy life. Get beyond their dated sonic limitations and you'll find some rare, rewarding performances on the 21 tracks collected here, from the Hot Air Men's tone-setting "Red Hot Chicago" to loopy novelty songs ("She Knows Her Onions," "Cigarettes, Cigars," "Take Your Black Bottom Outside"), the bounding hot-jazz instrumentals of Joe Turner ("Freeze and Melt"), and the Henderson Roseland Orchestra ("Raisin' the Roof"), Sophie Tucker's and Ether Waters' bluesy laments and the infectious boogie-woogie of Frank Melrose's "Piano Breakdown." Swing and jazz afficionados will also note tthe music here represents some crucial roots and inspiration; indeed, such later legends as Duke Ellington, Coleman Hawkins and Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey toil as sidemen on some of the performances here. Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

Four of the songs on this CD (Oklahoma, Music of the Night, Cabaret, and All That Jazz) were on the earlier Ultimate Broadway. Of all the shows that have been on Broadway over the past 70+ years, including the ones that are currently running, there is no excuse for repeats!

I believe that the show selection for this CD was excellent. However the song selection and song order were not. Why pick "Your Daddy's Son" from Ragtime when you can have the amazing and fantastic "Prologue" from the same show. Also I believe that a mistake was made by slecting "I Don Quixote" from Man of La Mancha instead of the much more listenable "Impossible Dream." Also the overture from Gypsy is not the proper song to start out a CD. Perhaps the "Overture" from The Phantom of the Opera.

This is however an excellent example of showtunes for inexperienced members of the theatrical world.

The best of Broadway? Sure, if you consider the best of Broadway only those songs taken only from RCA Victor cast recordings. Expect the expected: Tracks from "Ragtime," "Chicago," "42nd Street" and "Man of La Mancha," sung by the likes of Audra

    Most compilations of composers works usually only feature, at best, maybe one or two works in recordings that are of outstanding quality, especially if different artists are featured. Such is absolutely not the case with this collection, one of the finest of its sort ever issued.

    This box makes a perfect one stop shopping choice for the major, most-well-known works the British composer Sir Edward Elgar. The title is misleading though. The box, on 8 CDs at an incredible price, contains both Orchestral AND Choral works.

      This is a very good collection of music from the 1920s and '30s. The CD includes fun and upbeat songs like "That's My Weakness Now" and "She Knows Her Onions," as well as depressed (but no less fantastic) numbers like "'Cause I Feel Lowdown" and "Cigarettes, Cigars." The singers and bands represented here range from Ruth Etting and Annette Hanshaw to Clarence Williams' Jug Band and the California Ramblers. The liner notes provide a brief story of Roaring Twenties Chicago in the context of the songs compiled on the CD, and it is interesting to see how each song fits into the collection. I would recommend this CD to anyone interested in the music of the 1920s and '30s.

It was a tremendous show for old and new fans, alike.
