Swingsation
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
When contemporary swing goes looking for its ancestors, the first one to turn up is Louis Jordan, the alto saxophonist-singer-songwriter who created jump blues around 1940 by emphasizing a boogie beat, simplifying swing riffs, and adding his own hyper-kinetic vocals. This entertaining survey of Jordan's work touches on his 1939 beginnings with "Flat Face" and its unusual tympani effects, but it's concentrated on the period from 1946 to 1953. Adding electric guitar and organ to his original formula, Jordan enjoyed tremendous R&B success while creating what would become early rock & roll. The world of Jordan's lyrics is a party that has just been crashed, is about to be raided, or both, as in "House Party," "Saturday Night Fish Fry," and "They Raided the House." Sometimes the party's at a farm, whether with the animal impressions of "Barnyard Boogie" or the counsel of "That Chick's Too Young to Fry." Whatever the locale, Jordan supplies heated, blues-based alto solos and a very lively band. Among the sidemen are key R&B players like organists Bill Doggett and Wild Bill Davis and guitarist Bill Jennings. --Stuart Broomer

Red Prycock.......2006-03-13
Great sax honking... none jazz. Will buy other similar CDs for sure.
The Baddest One.......2001-05-31
I first heard Mr. Prysock on the juke box at the Campus Inn soda counter in Utica, New York, circa 1953. At that point, I became an ardent jitterbugger, and life-long fan of Red. This album is a must-buy for me, though I have some of the tracks, already, on their original 45-rpm pressings. He inspired me, also, to take on the tenor sax, which I play to this day. The stomping, driving, energy of Red came though like a locomotive run wild, though completely on track. Prysock, the brother of singer Arthur, was the best of the Jump Tenor school, coming out of the stylings of Illinois Jacquet. I cannot help but notice how hip he was playing nearly 50-years ago, and how fresh and saucy he continues to sound today. Nobody has ever come close, though Sil Austin made a worthy challenge. Those who know R&B and the tenor sax, must bow to the Mighty Red One, for he alone was the cookingest mother out there. Or as I once told Muhammed Ali, "You are the most interesting interview of all time.." So, too, does that apply to Red Prysock, the swingingest tenor of all time.
Go Red Go.......1999-11-23
Wilber `Red' Prysock was born February 2, 1926 and died February 19, 1993. Red is the younger brother of the famous Arthur Prysock. Red learned the tenor saxophone during his military service in World War II. He turned professional upon his demobilization in 1947 and joined Tiny Grimes' Rocking Highlanders. In 1950 he joined Roy Milton's Solid Senders before finding fame with Tiny Bradshaw's band and such recordings as "Soft", "Off and On" and "Free For All" (which became known as "Go, Red, Go"). Prysock formed his own band in 1953 and signed with Mercury. Tunes such as "Hand Clappin", "Jump, Red, Jump" and "Finger Tips" were some of his best sellers. He also played with the Alan Freed Big Band, backing all the top rock `n roll artists of the 50s.
I was disappointed to see that "Fruit Boots" was not on this release. However, anything from Red is good music. Red Prysock is the epitome of 1950s Tenor Sax Rock `n Roll. Long before the electric guitar was known as the lead instrument of Rock, the Tenor Sax, with it's Honking & Squealing provided the excitement that drove Rock `n Roll into the history books. You can't listen to this music in the back ground. This CD needs to be cranked.
Red Prysock is simply fantastic........1999-11-19
I have been searching for the recording of Handclappin for over forty years. I have heard most all of these recordings forty years ago and the album they were on were accidently destroyed forty years ago. I ordered this CD today. I am now 62 years old and in the very early rock and roll Red Prysock was one of the greatest and most popular saxaphone players of his time. His music never grows old. Would appreciate his address if he is still alive just to tell him how fantastic and enjoyable his music has been.

Bar Walkin' Groove Grease with a Vengence ! ! !.......2005-05-29
As rare as it is to get to hear take-no-prisoner barwalking tenors and hear that great 50's organ/tenor sound, what makes this session even more delightful is the presence of two under-recorded Jazz/R&B studio legends... Mickey Baker, considered by many the missing link between Jazz and Rock and Roll guitar, and Doc Bagby, the heavy shouting Hammond Organ player (see his BATTLE OF THE ORGANS CDs.)
Though the cuts on this particular SWINGSTATION volumes are a lot more rockin' than swinging (say as compared to the Red Prysock volume), the energy and dynamics are wild... and Bagby's unique organ sound is a thrill to listen to. He's somewhere between the hard swinging soul of Bill Doggett and Wild Bill Davis and the pop sounds of Baby Face Cortez ! ! !
All in all, each track sizzles over with pure bluesy shuffle stroll and rock 'n rollin juke box exhuberence and no track misses ! So while we're on the topic, my only question is this - - since VERVE has gotten these winners from the vault, when's LITTLE RICHIE VAROLA comin' out ??
Sil Austin's Swingsation.......2000-10-16
During the 1950's Mercury Records followed the success of tenor saxophonist Sil Austin's hit single Slow Walk with two albums by him titled Everything's Shakin' and Slow Walk Rock. Both featured his hard blowing, honking, shrieking, reed-biting, bar-walking style of tenor playing. A rhythm section composed of organ, guitar, bass, drums and occasionally piano completed the band which was usually based in boogie-woogie and jump blues. This Swingsation CD collects six tracks from Everything's Shakin' and five from Slow Walk Rock, plus three singles. You can hear Austin at his all-stops-out best on Train Whistle and Bailin' Wire. Everything's Shakin', Dogwood Junction, Wildwood, Fallout and several others are also uptempo flag-wavers. As the names imply Slow Walk and Continental Stroll, along with Tell Your Story, are slower, more blues oriented pieces. Continental Stroll, originally issued in two parts on a 45rpm record, has been left intact, and transferred to CD as one 4.59 minute song. This CD is somewhat of a mixed blessing. Since it is difficult to find much of Austin's early rock and roll, its great to have these back in circulation. It would be even better to have all of the songs contained on both albums. Since the CD clocks in at 37.30 minutes, there should have been plenty of room to include everything. Hopefully one of these days Mercury/Verve will decide to re-issue the complete albums on one CD. Following his success as a rocker, Austin changed to a lush, mellow style and recorded several albums of standards such as Danny Boy, Summertime, and Stardust. In the late 80s he returned to his earlier jump blues style as part of a group called The Tri Saxual Soul Champs on Black Top Records. If you like Austin's rock and roll, you may also wish to check out Swingsation's CDs by Red Prysock and Sam "The Man" Taylor.

Excellent Assortment of their Swing Hits!!.......2002-01-02
Some great swing hits from the Dorsey/Shaw library. And yes there is INDEED an abundance of swing on this disc! Infact, this CD has so much "cool" its almost a crime to say otherwise. You may find some pieces slower than others, and some may have more bounce than rock, but all in all you cant go wrong. This is an excellent Disc to add to your library if you dont own much material by either artist. The Dorsey tunes are all in the classic 1940's feel, wartime background music. Very brassy, very brash, but at the same time very smooth and cool. Somewhere in that gray area between Glenn Miller and Gene Krupa. The Shaw tunes are a bit less brassy, have a softer overall tone and would be the less "swinging" material on the disc. This doesnt detract from the material's merits. This stuff is "COOL". Overall, this CD contains alot of great music that you can really turn up loud and FEEL.
SLOWER PACE.......2000-08-09
WHEN YOU THINK OF ARTY SHAW, OR TOMMY DORSEY, YOU USEALLY THINK OF FAST PACED DANCE MUSIC. THIS IS VERY MOOD MUSIC, TO PLAY IN THE BACKGROUND AT A PARTY, OR ROMANTIC INTERLUDE, BUT SADLY NOT A BOUNCE IN IT.

If you're from the younger generation and want to hear what the fuss was all about in the "good old days" this CD is for you. Even if you're a lifelong fan, this is an excellent addition to add to your masters of swing and jazz collection. There are not many samplers out there that are as good as this one. This is one you have to listen to to get the full effect of this review. A solid and great piece of work!

4 1/2 Stars.......2001-06-25
Barnet and Dorsey were both very talented saxophone players of the big band era and both led popular bands. The songs they recorded were good, fun, and danceable, even though the two men were not great innovators in jazz and borrowed their songs and their styles from other bandleaders who were, such as Ellington, Basie, and Goodman. If you are interested in studying jazz as an art, listen to the latter. If you just want some fun swing to listen to, this is a great CD to have.
