Being Myself
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Lena Horne's Being Myself is the flip side of Sinatra's September of My Years; rather than gazing backward ruefully, the 81-year-old diva throws herself a well-earned party, wryly celebrating late-life romance on "As Long as I Live" and laughing at despair on "Some of My Best Friends Are the Blues." Even when the disc takes a turn toward the ruminative--"After You," "Willow Weep for Me"--Horne tempers downheartedness with a sly bluesiness. The arrangements, which mostly place her in small-group jazz settings, stay out of the way of the wisdom on display here. --Rickey Wright
Jazz Times
[Lena Horne] seems to sound better in every outing, and these 10 tracks underscore that conviction. Her distinctive style is most evident on the ballads.... Horne's blues bag is enhanced by tenor saxophonist Houston Person and organist Bobby Forrester on "Some of My Best Friends are the Blues" and guitarist George Benson on "It's All Right With Me."

The Trouble With Being Funky.......2007-06-16
Not to say that Macy Grey cannot produce a great ballad but this triple threat singer, songwriter and producer just seems so much more at home throwing down her gritty, quirky singing to incredibly funky songs such as the brightly catchy "When I See You","Come Together" and the speedy, horn fueled jazz funk extravaganza of the closing "Every Now And Then".She also gets a little reflective on the midtempo funky soul groove "She Don't Write Songs About You".Unfortunately this albums loses a lot of steam especially in the case of "It Ain't The Money" which Macy totally spoils in an effort to "reach the youth market of 2003" by adding a clever but contrived rap by Pharoahe Monch;Macy Gray has more then enough ability to stand on her own without the presense of rappers and this is made no more clear then on her lastest (and somewhat superior) album Big.The rest of the album is good but points out Macy's other slight flaw of trying to be too musically diverse and eclectic.Considering her freakish persona, borrowing heavily from her 70's counterpart Betty Davis Macy sounds very good on the ska inflected "My Fondest Childhood Memories" and the too beat heavy string ballad "Jesus For A Day" but are just too bogged down by her ambition rather then having it be a help to her sound.Sadly the rest of the remaining songs on this album (again) focus on hip-hop beats "for the kids" (to quoate Miles Davis referring to his very Macy Gray-sounding classic On the Corner) and soul balladeering trying hard to replicate the sound of her breakthrough hit "I Try" from five years earlier. So four classics out of twelve isn't bad and nothing on this album is truely awful. But fans totally intolerant of contempory-hip hop-disguised-as-retro R&B might want to steer clearly.Otherwise a potent musical experience awaits you.
4.5 stars.......2007-01-02
The Trouble With Being Myself is definitely Macy Gray's best work to date. This is seriously one of my favorite albums. It is excellent. Songs like "Screamin'," "Speechless" and "My Fondest Childhood Memories" are superb, as is the rest of the album. The lyircs on here are such an improvement from her past works, too. Yeah, some of them are still very strange and freaky, but a lot of them are deep and relateable. I highly recommend buying this album. It's really a shame because this was her least successful release, but it it her best.
Soul for your Soul.......2005-08-31
Macy Gray sadly would suffer a slight decline in her popularity, a common problem with some whose debut to critic's can never be bested in their eyes. Macy continued to release new music in her own distinct vein with 2001' "The Id" & this, 2003's "The Trouble With Being Myself". Though the critics finally "got" this record, beyond her fans, Top 40 radio had moved on from the neo-soul movement, & one of the most promising soul singers fell into obscurity sales wise.
I myself was one of the few who purchased this great album back in 2003, & continues to spin it today. This album to me is what we need more of in RnB: original, yet accesible beats & melodies, a voice that no one can forget, & thought-provoking lyrics. This record gives that & more.
"When I See You" opens the album with a fresh slice of funk, finding Macy still knows how to party & make that feel good music. Another highlight is "Jesus For A Day" which I really can't put into words, but can only say 'wow'. I also enjoyed "Things That Made Me Change" & "Speechless" which found Macy dealing with many introspective issues as with on her debut, but with the idiosyncratic nature of her sophmore follow-up.
I like how Macy adrresses the idea of love as something tangible, but that once you have it, you have to be able to hold onto it without losing what you "grabbed" it for in the beginning. She seems to channel the up's & down's of romance well through song.
I recommend this to any Macy Gray fan who never got a chance to listen to this underrated album, which combines what made both of her previous efforts great.
the real trouble.......2005-04-21
"the trouble with being myself is that I'm too embarassed to admit that I swallowed a frog and my record execs are pimpin' me to put out mess despite my suffering vocal skills"-Macy Gray
This!!!.......2004-06-30
Macy is in a class of her own. This cd is almost perfect. I love her unique voice. She is funky and soulful. Nobody matches the soulfulness of her voice. The songs are unique, strange, and wonderful. She is so quirky and real.

My Fave Dionne of the 70's.......2007-05-27
I came to this album late in life but boy I am glad I found it. Believe it or not it, I was made aware of it because of a sample of "You're Gonna Need Me" used by hip-hop legend J Dilla. Loving Dionne Warwick's music I had to seek this out. "Just Being Myself" is Dionne meets Holland-Dozier-Holland for a one-off collaboration and what a lasting impression this has made on me. I own practially every Dionne Warwick release from throughout her venerable career and this dusty masterpiece was quite a surprise. Each song offers something special and characteristic of the Dionne style. From the arrangements, it is obvious that H-D-H held Dionne's work from the Bacaharach-David era in great respect. The songs frequently qoute many of Bacharach-David stylistic touches (listen to "I Always Get Caught in the Rain"). Yet H-D-H add a new dimension to the Warwick style by rooting the album in the post 60's Motown sound. In return Dionne sings at her most soulful, adult-themed songs backed by funky, and complex musical arrangements. The magic of H-D-H has always been their ability to communicate an epic sweep in 3-4 minutes and this remains true on all the songs on this album. "Just Being Myself" finds Dionne at the top of her game - a consumate professional. Given how much I love this record, it is odd for me to read reports where Ms. Warwick speaks disparagingly about this album and this period of her career -success with Warner Brothers records eluded her, and "Just Being Myself" produced no chart hits for her. I think time has vindacted this period of her career -- the music remains relevant and classic at once. Each decade from the 60's through to the 90's, Dionne's output was exemplary and this for me is the high point of her 70's era. I say grab this one before it goes out of print once again and you end up paying hundreds of dollars on Ebay for a used copy.
Dionne Meets The Motown Sound.......2006-09-01
Dionne Warwick working with the pioneers of the "Sound of Young America"? This can't be good, but surprisingly it's one of her more consistent albums ever. Ms. Warwick stepped out of her comfort zone and showed the gospel-based soulful side of herself. Despite hating the album because it was recorded differently from the way Bacharach and David recorded her, she showed that she could hold her own with the soul shouters like Aretha and Gladys. This is an album worthy of a listen and ownership for your collection.
Dionne's best Warner set .......2005-11-17
Brief but beautiful ... that describes this masterpiece by the Queen of Champagne Soul. Each of the 8 songs is great to terrific; no filler here. Dionne's delivery and execution is perfect for each song's feel and subject matter. "I Always Get Caught In The Rain" has to be one of the most beautiful 70's ballads ever recorded, while "You're Gonna Need Me" has an urgency rarely heard by Miss Warwick.
All of Dionne's early 70's material, thankfully re-released with liner notes by the ever-informative David Nathan, is outstanding and never gets its just due. That said, JUST BEING MYSELF is in a class of one and my personal favorite of them all. Dionne's trademark sweet and delicate vocal touch mixes so well with this soulful material.
That soulfulness makes this set stand out in Dionne's catalog. It also makes it worth adding to your collection since it represents the absolute cream of early 70's R&B in many ways. You will not be disappointed!
FORGOTTEN 70'S DIONNE GEM!.......2005-11-16
All Dionne fans agree there was some great overlooked music by The Woman in the 70's, and this has to rank as the *most* overlooked, probably because there is so much Holland-Dozier-Holland in it and as a result perhaps Dionne is simply fronting some latter-day Motown. But as we all know--Dionne doesn't front anything! Even though these songs could have been sung by any of the Motown ladies, Dionne takes each track and makes it her own. Particularly soulful and spectacularly performed are the haunting "Don't Burn the Bridge (That Took You Across)" that closes out the album, and the energetic "I Think You Need Love" early on. The music is always interesting and the background vocals are mixed fat right up front, giving the whole album a gospelly feel. Check out some of the clips, you'll want to give it a try--you won't be able to resist "Come Back" and the sweet ballad "Don't Let My Teardrops Bother You." A must for fans and people who like 70's soul.

A National Treasure.......2005-10-01
We are all so lucky to have Lena Horne in our lives. She paved the way for so many other brilliant artists like herself. This is a woman who can teach us how to live with her phrasing and subtlety. She makes you laugh and cry at the same time. This is a simply beautiful CD displaying her mature richness and grace. May she live on and produce similar music when she gets to be over 100!!
Her BEST cd ever!!.......2003-12-08
Whoever wrote that Lena's singing is "painful", is an idiot. Lena posesses the most beautiful voice today. She sounds elegant and beautiful thru this whole cd, I am 16 years old but I truly enjoy this blues cd, with Mike Renzi's jazz groups. The best version ever of A Sleepin Bee is on this PERFECT cd. Lena doesn't show her age, she shows her wisdon, and if you aren't pleased by this you are msot likely a miserable person. I am luscky that I have grandparents who took me to see all of these singers when I was a preteen, they took me to New York and we saw Lena, I was 11, and Lena was great, and so is this cd.
PAINFUL.......2003-08-30
PLEASE do not buy this CD, it is absolutely PAINFUL to listen to. A very poor introduction to Lena and it will not satisfy anyone who loved her from the 1930s through the the mid-1980s. Lady & Her Music was a great show, she was 65 then and "still had it", but not here. The woman is over 80 here and sounds every day of it, why she had to make this CD is beyond me. If she needed cash she should have done more of those Gap commercials. The singing on this CD, most of the songs are great standards, is pathetic. WHY is it these older stars do not know when to quit? I'd give this negative stars if I could. STAY AWAY!
FOREVER A CLASS ACT!.......2002-01-25
Even if Lena Horne's voice has lost a bit of the range and resonance of her younger years, her timing, interpretation of lyric and consummate professionalism in still perfection. The wisdom, power and freedom of her delivery are reflective of a woman that, despite her icon status, truly knows who she is and flaunts it without reserve. The smoldering fire and sense of irony that she brings to the more bluesy cuts are that of a "woman of color" who, as a pioneer in both music and motion picture industries was offered limited opportunities, fought, suffered and has prevailed. Her jazzy renditions of well-worn standards are fresh revelations that rise above nostalgia. This CD is an intimate musical conversation with a "living legend" that too often has not always received the exposure and recognition that she so richly deserves.
Lena is as great as ever!!!.......2001-06-27
Lena Horne is one of the finest singers around today. One of the few original entertainers who sing classic pop and jazz. Only Rosemary Clooney, Tony Bennett, and Anita O'Day who were all in her league are still performing. This her most recent effort is spectacular. Lena is still going strong her voice pure and beautiful, her style still as sassy and stylish as ever, and she's more loose and improvisational now, than ever. This cd is recommeded to fans of Lena as well as people who have enough class to get it.

Great beats but..........2007-04-16
... the lyrics are immature and amateurish. This is a decent cd though, and one of Juvie's best (is that saying much though?). You can see the 2pac influences in the lyrics, as well as Too $hort and the Dogg Pound. So... yeah. It's not very memorable, I don't like the lyrics, and Juvenile is not my favorite rapper, but the excellent remixed beats make this worth picking up (especially for it's bargain-basement price).
This is a remixed version of an album already released. I have not heard that, but the samples made it sound outdated and forgettable.

Yo,when i heard this CD I thought that it will be a bad S##t commercial. But Warlock Records do a wonderful work with the remixes of Being Mysef. All the songs are great and the beats are very different of the cash money records music style.
Honestly all fan of Juvenile and Cash money have to check this CD.
Morever the lyrics of juvenile are very good on the album and i want to say that Being Myself(Remixed) is the second best album of Juvenile(after 400 Degreez) and that this CD is a classic!! Check the album and Being yourself!
Juvenile is weak..........2001-09-16
...because he can't flow! Some poeple think he aight but that's no true. How can you like that guy? And how can Pee do a collab with BG? I don't understand. Ca$h Money should be banned from BET and real hip hop stations. Stay strictly on the South! Effhead!

Customer Reviews:
An Interesting Beginning.......2001-03-25
"Being Myself" was the very first album Juvenile ever did. What's surprising to me is that it very little resembles the Juvenile we all know today, who has put out such hits as: "Ha" and "Back that azz up." This difference may be large in part to the fact that this was released in 1994, a few years before he hooked up with Manny Fresh and Cash Money Records. Nevertheless, this is an all-around good album. The beats are primative compared to today's standards, but they don't feel to keep you moving. Juvenile flowed really well on this album and his true lyrical talents proved themselves on such tracks as: "U Can't C Me", "Shake Dat Azz", and "Conversation With Tha Man Above". Some of the lyrics he said were even heartfelt at times. This album is a must-have, especially if you're a Juvenile fan. It also is worth checking out as simply a fan of rap. For those of you out there who don't care much for Cash Money, check this out anyway. You'll find whatever conceptions you have about Juvenile put to dust. He is undoubtedly one of (if not, THE) best rappers for Cash Money and he's been around in the game a long time. The style here actually resembles Old School hip-hop, like possibly something out of West Coast.
South or West?.......1999-10-03
I gotta say, this album is tight, but is it west coast music or is it that dirty south N.O. flavor we all know?
Woe, woe, wardey.......1999-07-20
My man Juvenille know he can keep a brother movin' and groovin'. And that's what I look for in my choice of music. He's got my Grammy vote. And he sho' nuff got da' skillz to go platinum.
