"Guitar-wielding bombshell"

Georgia Sand, Curve, April 2002
"A stunner and a strummer..."

Album Description
Schutt's live debut cover album, "brokenwingtrick," includes such favorites as "Aretha Franklin's "Freeway of Love," David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel," and Cole Porter's "Summertime." The landscape of the album seems familiar enough - 80s pop favorites and other, less well-known gems - but Schutt's tour through this pop cultural countryside is simultaneously fascinating and unsettling: Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" builds to a beautiful, yet terrifying rage and the spare, quiet mood of Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It" set the lyrics spinning.

"Kate Schutt might play a lot of cover tunes," says The Brandeis Justice, "but she is no mere cover artist...She has been endowed with the remarkable ability to take any song she happens across and make it distinctly her own." Schutt's re-workings on this album are distinctive and thought provoking in their scope, their subtlety, and their sincerity. She has reached that precarious place of balance where the interpretations sound fresh yet inevitable.
