Singer/pianist Diana Krall breaks new ground interpreting modern standards by Tom Waits, Mose Allison, and Joni Mitchell, as well as compositions by herself and new husband, Elvis Costello. Krall's piano-jazz cred comes through loudly and clearly on her Count Basie-styled version of the Bonnie Raitt staple "Love Me Like a Man" (written by folk-bluesman Chris Smither). But it's the collaborations with her spouse that unearth untapped emotional nuances of her velvet voice; many are reminiscent of Bill Evans's moody, impressionistic pieces. The title track, "Narrow Daylight," "Abandoned Masquerade," and "I'm Coming Through" all deal with love and loss. "Departure Bay," a picturesque ode to her hometown of Nanaimo, B.C., proves that this is the start of something big, and that two heads--and hearts--are better than one. --Eugene Holley Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Exceptional album.......2007-05-10

Exceptional performances, material, and production.
Krall/Costello collaborations are my favorites - title cut in particular.
No weak cuts on the album, but alot of talent.

5 out of 5 stars Brava! The woman behind the music - revealed........2007-04-12

I have been following and enjoying Diana Krall's career since her debut at the Monterey Jazz Festival. Her amazing talent has been stunning and her ability to interpret and re-interpret jazz classics in immensely pleasing to her fans. I always wondered if she was really enjoying her gifts as much as her fans. This album reveals a multidimensional original talent, exploring her talent and finding her creative voice. I loved it the moment I heard a couple of tracks. I hope we hear many more original and collaborative pieces in the future. This seems like an intimate glimpse into the artist and is a gift to us all.

5 out of 5 stars great effort.......2007-03-16

I liked this cd very much. The best tracks are Love Me Like a Man and Temptation. Real toe tapping, jumping music.

5 out of 5 stars Love it, love it, love it.......2007-03-12

Put this CD on for an evening of great jazz. This is smooth jazz to unwind with filled with intimate feeling and sets a melancholy mood. Diana Krall has a great voice and these songs suit her voice well. A good one to have in your collection if you like to kick your feet up and relax with quiet jazz music.

5 out of 5 stars Modern Jazz, Modern Songs - The very best of Diana Krall.......2007-02-27

In this album Diana moves past the stilted hero-worship and bland retro-staged recreations of years past, and creates her own sound. If your idea of ideal jazz is that which recreates the same arrangements, with the same songs as 1950, then you won't like it.

As a jazz musician and composer there's nothing more stifling than the idea that the genre stopped 40 years ago. Its funny to hear comments like the songs on this new album are just "pop music", when in the golden years of jazz, it *was* popular music! Jazz artists through the decades have always taken the best current songs and made them their own, even in the bop years.

Sure, there's lots of modern jazz that is "smooth" pap, not worthy of the name, but this is the opposite of that trend. For all of the complaints this album has a traditional acoustic jazz combo orchestration and sound, but with an energy and push that is lacking in her other albums.

5 out of 5 stars A unique pleasure..........2006-03-28

The breezy and haunting sounds of The Girl in the Other Room has moved through the air of my home, gently filling the space with the resonating notes of a steady bass, the soft tapings of a high hat and cymbal and a voice that feels to whisper the lingering lyrics of songs written from the soul. Diana's fingers seem to barely touch the keys of her instrument, her heart expressing the existence of languid spirits, lost loves and memories of abandonment, past affairs and the fading scent of summertime.

The music of Diana Krull redefines the meaning of the word "cool" or more so, brings its meaning back to its original roots, where cool can really only be expressed through the sounds of jazz and blues.

Most of these tunes are a creative collaboration between Diana Krull and the genius of Elvis Costello. It is entirely evident that these two artists' have that mysterious ability to bring their minds and souls together, creating some extraordinary music.

Hearing track twelve for the first time, Departure Bay, Diana's voice, like the magical chanting of an ancient magi, entered my being and opened my spirit to the endless possibilities of music, seemingly transporting the soul to other realities, beautiful worlds and landscapes, places the soul always yearns for in secret, waiting for the chance to finally go there...and stay.

Diana and Elvis Costello have truly exceeded themselves with these songs.

This CD is magical, strangely enchanting and truly mesmerizing.

5 out of 5 stars It's Fairly Evenly Split 50/50. What Do You Think?.......2004-08-02

Approximately half of us like Diana's new direction and approach, and half of us don't particularly care for her change of coarse. That is quite a difference of opinion for such a highly regarded and respected artist, and it has been quite some time since I can remember such an extremely passionate and varied assortment of reactions surrounding a major label release such as the ones we have seen concerning Diana Krall's most recent release, "The Girl In The Other Room".

I fall into the "like very much" category for many reasons, but the main motivation for me to react positively to this album is that with this effort I believe Diana has accomplished something that artists from the beginning of time have been striving to achieve, and that is to share with their audience a slice, a small piece of their own existence and give the audience a very direct and unfiltered glimpse into the artists feelings, and experiences. Granted this process of creating original material based on ones deepest and most haunting emotions is a completely different approach than she has taken with here previous efforts, and it is obvious that many of her fans and listeners in general would prefer that she go back to singing the standards like before and abandon her new approach of creating original music that expresses where she is now in her life and musical career. I for one believe that would be a mistake. The great standards will always be there for her to interpret for us, but the emotional outpouring that she is so obviously experiencing as expressed in the songs on this album is something that cannot be ignored and must be explored.

You can be sure that Diana will be making many more albums and will record many more of the wonderful songs from the past that we all know and love, but in the mean time we should enjoy every note that this exquisite performer writes, plays, and sings, and consider ourselves very lucky that she is willing to expose us listeners to some of her own feelings and give us a very intimate and genuine look into the soul of Diana Krall.

I recently discovered a new crooner named Monte Procopio that I also enjoy. His CD, "Swingin' With Style" features an excellent selection of songs and a 13-piece band that really swings.

5 out of 5 stars The best so far!!.......2004-07-09

We have enjoyed all Diana Krall's CD's and just purchased the Super Audio for our new CD player and wow....she was in our room playing. The new material is made just for her and it shows off her style.

2 out of 5 stars Diana, a great musician. Making a bad turn?.......2004-07-02

Don't be misguided by my rating of this album. I encourage you to purchase EVERY album that Diana has ever made. I am a big fan of Diana Krall. Case in point- I traveled from the Cayman Islands via Australia, to see her perform in Toronto, Canada. (Check that out on your maps!) BUT... in my NOT so humble opinion, I feel that Diana would do better to make music with Joni Mitchell or the sort. Joni Mitchell good for Diana...Elvis Costello, well, we'll wait and see. I can only hope that this album is not a sign of what is in store for Diana and her music. I submit the following evidence- Listen to "A Case of You" from her album entitled "Live In Paris" Now listen to any of the 7 songs on this album that Elvis has credit to.- No Elvis, I DON"T THINK SO! Mind you, this is not to be mistaken as a bad review on Elvis' music. I'll eat Ice-cream or Caviar.-Just not together.

3 out of 5 stars DVD-Audio won't play in Pioneer universal players.......2006-09-02

I have several DVD-Audio and SACD discs. On this one, the DVD-Audio tracks have no sound. They show to be playing, but I get no audio from multichannel or stereo playback. The Dolby Digital tracks play just fine, as do the music videos. My player is a Pioneer DV-563A and I have never had this problem before. Really a disappointment since I was so glad to see a Dualdisc with DVD-Audio content.

UPDATE: Took the disc up to Best Buy and tried to play it on several DVD-Audio players. The disc played fine on all of the Denon units, but refused to correctly play back on any Pioneer machine.

3 out of 5 stars Back on track.......2005-11-08

After so many disappointing CDs, with the slowest tempos and quietest songs ever, all in a row like a funeral dirge, Krall actually acts like a jazz singer at times here, some songs, gasp, actually have noise, and Krall does something besides whisper in ultra quiet mode. This is a very enjoyable album, although not a fabulous one. But the music is fun, and the performances remind you of the early Diana Krall. You know the one who had pretensions of being a jazz artist, not the female version of Mantovani. The flip side of this is a dvd that contains a few music videos, and it forcefully reminds you of Krall's other flaws. Her performance is utterly without personality. Why bother to video such a thing? It reminds me of a surly concert performance she once gave in my city. Enthusiastic fans were appreciative. She barely acknowledged that she was in a room playing for other people. Fans called out some favorites that they wanted her to do. She looked up and sarcastically stated--and it sounded mean, no joking here---"What, do you think I have a tip jar here?" Then she realized what she had done and made a half hearted apology. Not a trace of a connection to the audience. Krall is a leaden performer, and it shows on the music videos, which might as well not exist. She's hard pressed to crack a smile. If she has a personality, it is hard to find. Just be satisfied that the music is decent again. About time.

5 out of 5 stars bravo!!!, a dualdisc thats worth it.......2005-06-28

this dualdisc truly takes advantage of the formats capabilities (HEY YOU WHINERS AT SONY, ARE YOU LISTENING????) IT HAS A TRUE DVD AUDIO LAYER, IN 5.1 AND STEREO!!!!, THIS IS GREAT MUSIC BY DIANA KRALL, I HAVE SOME OF HER PREVIOUS WORKS ON DVD AUDIO, AND THIS ONE SOUNDS JUST AS GOOD.

BY THIS DUALDISC, YOU WONT BE DISSAPOINTED

5 out of 5 stars Great performer, great format.......2005-05-17

Diana does it again! Her smoky-voiced vocals and superb piano playing make these songs jump out of the speakers, regardless of whether you play the CD or DVD-A side. "Temptation" is a great track to show this disc's capability to your friends and to get them hooked on Diana as well. In defense of the Dual Disc format, remember that it's still a work in progress. I had no problems playing this, or any other Dual Disc I've purchased, on any player. The warning given about the CD side stems from the fact that the CD data layer is closer to the lens than is a standard CD, and some players may not be able to focus in on it. Newer players should have no trouble. The DVD layer on this disc provides the album in both DVD-Audioadvanced resolution sound, as well as Dolby Digital 5.1 and LPCM stereo, and some music videos. The inclusion of Dolby Digital is welcome for the ability to allow those who do not have DVD-Audio players to still enjoy the full surround version. And it doesn't sound bad at all. I agree that ALL Dual Disc releases should include 5.1 surround sound (after all, this is the 21st century), and that MLP DVD-Audio should be required on all discs, as well as the Dolby Digital, or even DTS track. (Are you listening, Sony BMG?) This format is still coming together. Let's embrace it and give it the chance to grow.

4 out of 5 stars Have you actually tried to play this?.......2005-05-04

I've had no problem with this or any other DualDisc. The warnings are included because the DDs are slightly thicker than the standard for CDs and thus do not qualify under the redbook guidelines to carry the official CD logo - the labels are playing CYA. While I've read of isolated problems here and there, they seem to be limited to a small handful of players and, in a few cases, authoring problems on the part of the label. Most users posting to various audiophile websites report being able to play these without trouble.

Also, you don't exactly get a "DVD" as in a full length video on this one. The appeal of this particular release is the high-resolution DVD-A layer. If you don't have a DVD-A player, the extra value of the DD here is marginal (standard-res 5.1 mix); if you do have a dedicated hi-res DVD-A player, it's doubtful you'd be playing the CD layer anyway.

Regarding the program itself, it's a good pop-oriented set from Krall, though nothing special. Special kudos go to her new guitarist, Anthony Wilson. He's been doing great stuff on his own for a few years, and is a solid addition to her band. The hi-res surround mix isn't flashy, but works well to bring you into the middle of the band.
