Looking forward to the next cd.......2007-07-15

There are artists that it's a given............when their cd hits the shelves, I'll buy it. Brett Dennen is one of those artists. He's made quite an impression because I've only just heard of him, in fact, just last night he opened for Ben Folds, who opened for John Mayer in Hartford CT.

Met him briefly after his set, while Ben Folds was playing. Didn't miss much there.

I'm sure there's lots more good stuff to come from this guy.

It's easy to see which musicians have influenced Brett Dennen - everyone is in agreement (see below for the timeless names). Nonetheless, I think most people also agree that he has his own style that differentiates him from those who influenced him. His sound is undeniably refreshing. Like many who posted, I believe there is much room for him to grow in light of his young modern talent, and he undoubtedly will. He is still young and it will be interesting to see his style develop over time. 4 stars to "So Much More" in the hopes that Brett will come out with a new album that confirms my belief and merits 5.

Great voice.......2007-06-14

I heard "Ain't No Reason" used in the TV show HOUSE and knew I had to buy the cd. His voice is fantastically soothing - definitely akin to Tracy Chapman. While "Ain't No Reason" is in continuous play on my ipod, the other songs haven't really gripped me yet. I think it's a good cd, but perhaps one that will take me a while to really get into.

This is terrific, low key, beautiful tunes. He sounds so much like Xavier Rudd (and maybe a bit like Paul Simon). In fact, I think that if you made a mix of Dennen and Rudd, people would think it was the same artist. If you like this, check out Rudd.

Ain't No Reason.......2007-06-03

I can't really comment on the whole c.d., as I've only heard one song. I heard it on House, the television show, on an episode entitled "Family". It of course was "Ain't No Reason". I had to look up the lyrics again, just to make sure I heard them right, but I had. It evoked instant emotion in me, bringing tears to my eyes. It tied in beautifully with what the episode was about, and brought to my mind some issues that had been going on in my life. I found it haunting, sad, yet tinged with hope. I came here to see what others thought, and after reading the mixed reviews I still am not certain whether to purchase it or not. But I had to say that I did love that one song, and I have rated it with 4 stars. I love good lyrics, and it had them.

When Wagner set the Ring to music, he intended the orchestra to act in the fashion of a chorus from a classic Greek tragedy--setting the mood and commenting on the action. In order to allow a nonverbal musical line to reflect on the plot, Wagner developed a psychologically and musically complex symbology to communicate his thoughts to the listener. From the beginning the Ring has spawned numerous written commentaries on the relationships of the motif structure, but by using examples from the Decca Ring recording, Deryck Cooke's thoughtful spoken commentary is by far the most accessible guide for either the fledgling Ring enthusiast or the seasoned veteran. --Christian C. This is very worthwhile, at the same time it requires time, patience and attention, but it does provide some keys to better enjoyment of a sensational piece of music.

FASCINATING STUDY FOR NOVICES AND AFFICIONADOS ALIKE.......2006-08-16

This may look an intimidating, daunting and dull prospect - a 2+ hour lecture on the motifs in the Ring. Don't be put off. Whether you're a relative novice to the Ring and want to find out what it's all about, more experienced with a desire to understand the composer's methods better or an afficionado who thinks he knows it all inside out, there is great pleasure as well as elucidation to be had from this set. Originally made to accompany the Decca Solti Ring, it contains a multitude of musical illustrations taken from those recordings as well as some specially recorded by Solti just for this Introduction.

It wasn't the first time this has been tried. The famous HMV sets from the late 20's also included recorded examples of over 100 motifs. (These, by the way, are available as part of the Pearl reissue of those wonderful HMV recordings). What that set lacked was the wonderful insights as well as the approachability of the talk by Deryck Cooke. Cooke was a great and much missed musicologist - a Mahler expert responsible for the performing edition of the Tenth Symphony still most played today, a fascinating explorer into the nature of music's basic building-blocks in his excellent book, The Language of Music, and an inspiring and elucidating critic of Wagner's work as shown by the fascinating book he left unfinished at his death, I Saw the World End.

On these CDs he does much more than list the leitmotifs and identify them as calling-cards. He shows the amazingly integrated and organic growth of the musical material that Wagner uses throughout his vast work. He demonstrates how motifs can change their sense and meaning as they evolve through the drama. And he shows how the complex combinations of motifs can radically advance both the musical and the dramatic narrative of the piece. There are even places where he corrects the misinterpretation of some of the motifs that had become ingrained from early commentators' false labels.

This set should engage and enlighten anyone with an interest in Wagner's huge and inexhaustible tetralogy. Do give it a try - no matter how far down the road to Wagnerianism you are.

Welcome back to a classic analysis.......2006-05-28

Deryck Cooke's lecture series upon THE RING is almost as much a classic by now as the Solti RING cycle, with which it was originally issued on LP, and from which it derives its musical examples. The difference is that whereas the Solti RING has been continuously in print ever since it was completed, and was among the first opera sets to benefit from the CD revolution, the Cooke analysis was for long almost totally unobtainable. Now we have it back. It should be welcomed: it is a classic. Cooke's mellow, deep voice with the hint of a Celtic burr - which made him ideal on BBC radio - patiently explains Wagner's melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic metamorphoses to such good effect that if you own this recording, you really require no other RING analysis. (A pity about the abrupt beginnings and endings of too many vocal and orchestral illustrations, though.) Musicology lost a fine, sensitive thinker with Cooke's premature death in 1976.

If all you want is dilettantish baby food, there are plenty of dumbed-down Wagner commentaries on the market, stretching from Anna Russell's famous monologue (which doesn't pretend to be anything other than a parody aimed at morons) to the latest standard-issue "Wagner-was-a-Nazi-boo-hiss" feuilleton (which, unfortunately, does). Without reasonable score-reading skill you will find Cooke useless, however diligently you have ploughed through Marx, Jung, Freud, or other gurus purportedly relevant to THE RING. Cooke expects you to use your brains and your musical sense. Quelle horreur. At today's BBC his "elitism" would render him unemployable.

Essential for Understanding Wagner's Ring Cycle.......2006-05-15

I originally bought this set on vinyl in the early 70s when I discovered the Ring in college. I studied the records and booklet assiduously, and after about three run-throughs I finally started getting it. Wow! Thirty-five years later, I still remember Mr. Cooke's analyses of various motive families, and I don't know how I could have mastered and loved the Ring without him. I now own this set on CD and listen again on the rare occasion of attending a Ring performance. My wife calls me a "Ring nut," but of course I'm nuts about many other things as well.

Bottom line, buy this set and study it if the Ring has captivated you as it has countless others. The presentation is dry, but sticking with it brings measureless and longlasting rewards.

Very Functional.......2006-03-19

This CD set is excellent for what it sets out to do: present the leitmotives of the Ring according to their relationship to one another and their role in developing both characters and plotlines. Deryck Cooke's lectures on each motive are very insightful, very helpful at cueing the listener into the semantic aspect of Wagner's orchestral writing. The one drawback is that the musical examples are a bit jarring. Without fade-ins or -outs, the engineering is quite barbaric. And though the orchestra was, I believe, conducted by Solti, and is beautifully done, the vocal performances can be quite unpleasant. Point being: this is not background music, but in accomplishing what it sets out to do, it is very successful, and I don't know of anything else like it.

the neville brothers don't belong here. they have fake voices that were made by marketing people. pavarotti has a voice trained over the years with tremendous preparation and hours and hours of classical training and lessons. it's like putting gary matthews jr. on a hitting show with ted williams. a big joke. but everyone else is great.

Pop stars with Opera singers, who would of thought. But it worls well. This CD is fun and has some wonderful proformances. Sting and Pav are very good together on Pania Angelicus. Sting is also good with Zucchero on Muoio Per TE. This CD sounds wonderful and is a must have for the fans of Pav, Sting, Kaas, May, Succhero, at all.

Fantastic album...the 1st in a wonderful series.......2000-12-14

This is the first cd in the Pavarotti and Friends series which benefits charities. The wonderful thing about them, is the mix of genres. And this one is no exception. Listen to Sting sing with Pavarotti on the beautiful 'Panis Angelicus', and 'La Donna e Mobile'. Who would have thought of pairing those two together. But it works with breathtaking magic. Just look at the list of artists on this disc and the songs performed. There really is something for every taste. From operatic songs to rock. I love this series, and highly recommend them to all music lovers.

The rap on Finley Quaye is a familiar one: Soulful, original voice wed to an r&b/pop sense that's curiously been damned as familiar and listener-friendly. There is an undeniably inviting quality to this third Quaye album (especially after the unsettling failure of its predecessor), a crowd-pleasing sensibility that may well be genetic (he's brother to guitar player/onetime Elton John sideman Caleb Quaye and reportedly uncle to Tricky). But if, as his critics insist, the singer/songwriter is aiming for the mainstream, this collection may be an argument as to how wide, if smoothly paved, the middle of the road can actually be. Veering from the hook-filled Memphis pop grooves of "Beautiful Nature" through his dreamy, Beth Orton-haunted collaboration with William Orbit, "Dice," to the authentic dub grooves of "Now and Forever" and "Pearls of Wisdom" and the chugging alterna-pop of "Overcome," Quaye's voice carries it all with graceful skill. However compelling, there's still a nagging sense that the sum is less than the total of the parts, an equation that suggests Quaye is a skilled musical chameleon who hasn't yet found his true artistic stripes. -- Jerry McCulley

While this is not Finley's best record, it is still very good. Buy it and rip tracks 3,4,6,9,10,and 13 to your itunes, and delete the rest.

The final demonstration.......2004-10-05

this album is the final demonstration that Finley Quaye is not a musician. His producers and all the working team around him made "Maverick a Strike" a great album and "Vanguard" a nice comeback, but he still isn't able to write a good song (maybe The Emperor, on "Vanguard", is the only decent one he ever wrote); useless calling William Orbit and Beth Orton to give a little hand... this album is a lame pop record without soul...

I disagree with the previous reviewer although we each have our own voice. I enjoy this CD very much and found it through the recommendations page. Dice and Beautiful Nature are two of my favorite songs on this album. If you like slow, jazzy, sort of funky sounds that FQ provides, you'll love this CD! It's a mellow sound with a very warm and heartfelt message in the majority of the songs.

I have much less than love for this album.......2004-07-30

I first saw Finley Quaye open for Ben Harper in 1997 and I quickly thereafter went out and bought Maverick a Strike. What an album his first one is- without a doubt his best to date. Vanguard grew on me after several months of listening to it, and I think it is also a strong work. I can't, however, seem to take this latest CD of his seriously. Look how many people are selling thiers used through Amazon- over 60! What does that tell you? Well, it tells you that if you buy this CD new then I have a bridge to sell you. If you are a big FQ fan like myself, buy a used copy and see for yourself. But don't have high expectations; simply put, Quaye's talent does not come through in this album. It's a piece of fluff.

Arguably "The Best" English "Merry Widow ".......2006-09-12

This is the "Merry Widow" with English translation by Christopher Hassel sung by June Bronhill. I loved this rendition ever since I first heard it in about 1960. What's to love? First the translation is the best I've heard. The language doesn't sound "stilted" as some others. And, you can understand almost every word sung. Plus, the famous song, "Vilja" has some wording that moves me every time I hear it: The soprano sings, "Love me and I'll DIE for you!" with the word "die" somewhat emphasized. I don't know, there's just something "powerful" about someone saying they'd "die" for love! AND, at the end of "Vilja" the chorus and soprano raise to a crescendo hitting a high note together. In many renditions the chorus is heard but not the soprano on the final high note. In THIS version, the soprano, June Bronhill, can be heard rising to the final high note with an incressing crescendo and fortissimo louder than the chorus and holding the final high note---which gives a very thrilling effect as she holds that final note, I assure you!

The "problem" is that this June Bronhill, Reid, and Hassel version is hard to find on CD. For example, this CD is made in Holland and "there is one left" so it says on Amazon. But, if you can find it, I think it would be very much worth a listen. Then, after hearing it, if you think there's a "better" Merry Widow, please let ME know! Thanks. Email:boland7214@aol.

i have yet to hear the album, however i saw them open for alice cooper.. and they were kickass.. i was skeptical because you can never tell how good an opening band is gonna be but by the time i went out to buy the cd from the stand in the foyer, it was sold out.. amazing sound.. sooo good

This Band Kicks Ass.......2005-03-25

You have to have this CD if you love AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Foghat, Pat Travers and any hard driving band. I have seen about 3000 bands in my lifetime (estimated) and was a music photographer for years. I had on the Austin Music Network (cable TV) for noise and when walking through the room this band's video came on and caused me to sit down and watch them. Immediately, I got on the computer and found their website then ordered the CD the next day. It has not left my CD player in my truck or at work since I bought this CD. This band kicks Ass!!!

These boys are great. Saw them in concert in Ottawa this summer. They were incredible. This CD is as hard rocking as it gets. Brings you back to the days of Lynard Skynard, Ted Nugent, Black Oak Arkansas etc... If you love Rock & Roll.... buy this CD.

In between making her name with husband Frank Wildhorn's Jekyll & Hyde and becoming a Rosie O'Donnell favorite, Linda Eder released her second solo album, And So Much More, in 1994. Her strong, rich voice lends itself well to Wildhorn's power pop, including the bluesy opener "I Don't Remember," the lovely title track, the swinging "Til You Come Back to Me" and "Is This Any Way to Fall in Love," and "I'll Forget You" from The Scarlet Pimpernel. Relying less heavily on Wildhorn numbers than she has on some of her later albums, Eder covers "All the Way," Leslie Bricusse's "When I Look in Your Eyes," Charlie Chaplin's "Smile," and the powerful closer "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Eder also begins her tradition of including a Harold Arlen number, here "The Man That Got Away"--a nod to Judy Garland yet also distinctive in an arrangement that makes time stand still. Michael Feinstein joins her for a duet on "Someone," which they performed on their joint national tour in summer 2000. --David Horiuchi

First heard Linda on Jekly and Hide and was totally impressed. Since this time have purchased two other albums and by far, this is the best overall. Every song is a winner!!!

Well, I must say that this cd is aptly titled! "And So Much More" certainly describes my feeling when puchasing this disc and giving it a first listen. I had no idea what to expect but was so thrilled upon hearing Ms. Eder's voice that I became an instant fan. There's so much MORE than what I had expected!

There is so much that is right about this cd that the only liability,being soon-to-be husband Frank Wildhorn's heavy handed production and at times "intrusive" orchestration, seem like minor flaws. Linda Eder's voice is a wonderful vehicle for the song selection,which is wisely chosen and never over-bearing (are you listening Barbra?) . Highlight's include "I Don't Remember", "Is This Anyway To Fall In Love?", "I'll Forget You" and a great duet with Michael Feinstein "Someone". Carefully crafted and impeccably sung and you have the makings of a strong yet subtle piece of music. How often are we fortunate to find that combination these days? Perhaps the greatest pleasure is simply that Linda is a vocalist in the traditional sense of the word....meaning singing 'standards' and show tunes in a straight-forward fashion, with honesty and emotion. What a find!

This truly is music for "adults"...and by that I simply mean music where melody, lyrics and perfect "pop" sensibilities come to together to mesh wonderfully.And to give credit where credit is truly due...the decision to use Jack Murphy as a lyricist was a stroke of genius! Sophisticated, clever yet words that tug at your heart-strings will never go out of fashion (sorry Mr. Porter!). Obviously I think this is almost a perfect package and while I've yet to hear Ms. Eder do anything quite as strong recently, although she's comes close,she receives kudo's for putting out an remarkable disc.

A Dramatic Change From Her Debut Album.......2000-08-06

Linda Eder went abruptly from that leather swathed "rocker" on her debut album to a soft, ballad performing muse with a remarkably Streisand-like bob, and let her audience see her other side. This album is mostly soft, 50's-like ballads, and I will certainly not say that on this album she didn't try to mimic somewhat the styles of other great performers. But she is her own person with her own voice. Her coy "I Don't Remember" is followed by the lovely title number. Then she really gets going. The campy, fast-paced "Till You Come Back to Me" is pure Eder, no copying or mimicing there, but then we come to "The Man That Got Away," a well known Judy Garland classic. But Eder has the talent to make this song her own. She phrases things differently ("The-e-ere is nothing. . . sadder than") and her characteristic "cry" between notes help to personalize this song to Eder. "When I Look in Your Eyes" is beautiful song with a haunting melody, followed by the standard "Smile" by Charlie Chaplin. "In the Cool, Dark Night," a relaxing ballad, is next, and then comes "Someone," a duet with Michael Feinstein. One of the gems on this album is "Is This Anyway to Fall in Love" peformed in a way that only Linda Eder could. But one of my very favorites on the album is "I'll Forget You." Here is a song in which Eder truly makes you feel what she feels; it will truly move you. "Next Time I Love is another wonderful, but sad song. "All the Way," another standard is performed flawlessly, and the albums concludes on a spine-tingling note with "Bridge Over Troubled Water." If Simon and Garfunkel really knew how to sing their own song they would have done it like Linda Eder did. But then, no can sing a song like Linda Eder.

Linda is Remarkable in this Collection!.......2000-07-08

When Brent and I combined our CD collection, I was fortunate to benefit by this fabulous collection of songs by Linda Eder (our friends often ask, "Is that Barbra Streisand?"). Linda could easily be the next Barbra! This collection of songs offers some up-tempo beats and some romantic pieces too! Her voice is crisp on the title track "And So Much More". Our personal favorites include: "The Man That Got Away" "Someone" (with Michael Feinstein) and "Is This Anyway To Fall In Love". Her rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is remarkable and makes this collection complete! You will not be disappointed.

Great material, better performance.......2000-06-23

And so much more is a classic, and yet it is new. A softer album than the 2 newer ones, with the (obligitory) duet with Michael Fienstien. Want a romantic and fun evening share this recording with someone special. The only female singer who I enjoy nearly as much is Nancy LaMott. Suzannah McKorkle, Laurie Beechman, Amanda McBroom, Rosemare Clooney, KT Sullivan, Mary Clere Haran & Ann Hampton (or Liz) Callaway are all wonderful, but at least one\two steps behind.

This Is a Teacher's Pick.......2001-09-30

Asha's Baba has recorded a beautiful selection of West African story telling and music that will educate, entertain and inspire. He plays the kora, an African harp, which has such a beautiful sound, it could lull a baby to sleep. And his storytelling, with all of the authentic background noises, really makes you feel as if you were sitting there listening to this djeli. The drumming in the music make for a complete African experience that you will want to share. The CD is a great gift idea for any age, but make sure you have a copy for yourself as well.

This performance, the only one available in English, is problematic. Best is Yves Abel's leadership of the orchestra, which sounds wonderful, imbuing Puccini's lush score with just the right exoticism and emphasis. But aside from Gregory Yurisch's fine Sharpless, the singers don't please. Paul Charles Clarke as Pinkerton is lacking stylistically and vocally, and as Butterfly, Cheryl Barker sounds under strain and never pretty. While she has the power and feeling for the big second-act climax (the sighting of the ship), she never for a moment sounds fragile or girlish, not even in the all-important early scenes. English or not, this set isn't in the running. Stick with Callas or Scotto in Italian, and follow the libretto. --Robert Levine

A touching English Butterfly.......2002-03-27

Anyone familiar with Cheryl Barker's Butterfly will be interested in hearing this recording. I have heard her in the role twice - in Auckland and London - and her voice has filled out as the years have gone on. She hasn't a large italianate soprano; the sound is too slender somehow. Yet there is the paradox - it has great carrying power and a decent cutting edge to make itself heard above the orchestral climaxes. What really impresses is the sense of vulnerability and moral strength she imparts, making sense of the big moments of the secong act. The sound in Act one is gorgeous (and a super D flat in theentrance aria) and she differentiates impressively between the child-bride and the embittered woman of the two acts.

She is surrounded by a mixed supporting cast. Jean Rigby is maternal, warm and affecting as Suzuki. Gregory Yurisich makes Sharpless' dilemma more understandable than usual, rather than being completely ineffectual. Paul Charles Clarke perhaps illustrates Pinkerton's arrogance with a degree of vocal swagger, but the sound is rough-hewn and unlovely save for some moments in the love duet. Stuart Kale's Goro is suitable ingratiating and oily.

Abel's conducting is the other chief draw of this set. That he has experience of the score in the theatre means that his pacing is really superb, and the lush orchestration is given its due, the potent intermezzo during the overnight vigil sounding suitably ominous.

This won't replace the classic Butterfly recordings, but in the absendce of any new ones recently, and for acceptable diction in an English version, it is certainly worth the (not very high) price. Recommended.
