wow.......2007-06-14
This cd has brought light into the wizardry of roy buchanan. What a loss to the blues lovers who have missed the captivating sounds brought by the guitar. Roy would have given much needed popularity to the blues if not for his untimley death. This cd ranks at the top of his achievements.

Absolutely blistering.......2005-12-24
I was introduced to this CD during my freshman year in college, about a year or so after it was released. One of the audiophiles in my dorm had a great collection of jazz and blues CDs, and this was one of his prizes. One day he played "Sneaking Godzilla through the Alley" at high volume, and I was hooked. The first lick Buchanan plays is sufficient to wake the dead; the remainder of the track--and there's a lot of it--would kill 'em all again. The rest of the CD ain't too shabby, either. This is easily one of the most underrated CDs in any genre of the mid-80s.
A Great Example of Later Buchanan.......2002-07-16
Can anything really compare to Roy Buchanan's early output? This one was produced later in his life... when he was a seasoned professional...and it definately has it's gems. Alligator records should be applauded for letting cut loose and do his thing, a great testimonial to his style and abilities. I used to sneak in (fake ID) and watch Roy at "My Mother's Place" in Washington DC, I wonder if "My Fathers Place" in NYC were of the same ownership? Those were nights I will never forget. If you are into the DC music scene of the early 70's, check out some Danny Gatton records as well...between Roy and Danny, DC auido philes were greatly blessed with these two fine talents.
UNBELIEVABLE.......2002-01-10
I saw roy perform many years ago..probably 10 times in a small club here in long island ,NY ..."My Father's Place" was the club. The club is long gone but the memory of his shows will be with me forever. Wow..this guy had some serious chops!!! His technique was flawless.
Mrs. Pressure meets Godzilla !.......2000-09-23
A fine album by Roy Buchanan, a guitar hero who never quite made the big time. Exquisitely produced by Alligator Records, Roy gets a chance to stretch out and show what he can do with a guitar. On the opening track, he tries to make his guitar sound like a church organ, it seems, and he almost pulls it off ! The one thing about Roy Buchanan is his singing voice : it just doesn't do the trick. Often he just seems to say the lyrics as opposed to sing them. He brings in a couple of guests to sing on a few tracks, and these add further to the unease about Roy's own voice. His guitar playing is tops, though ! Listen to tracks like "Mrs. Pressure" (his former guitar teacher ! What's in a name ?) or "Sneaking Godzilla through the alley" (great title !) and be convinced. This is the first of 3 albums Roy made for Alligator, and they seemed to set him on the track to greater recognition. Sadly, though, all came to an end when he was arrested one night for being drunk in a public place and took his own life in his cell. A sad end to a great guitar-player's life.

This royal flush of a card sharp's compilation provides an inspired soundtrack for magician Ricky Jay's poker obsession. The game (blood sport?) offers common thematic ground for blues king Robert Johnson, country queen Patsy Cline, folk great Bob Dylan, soul legend O.V. Wright, and the high bluegrass harmonies of the Country Gentlemen. The selection additionally extends from call-and-response musicals (Howard Da Silva's "Politics and Poker") to TV (Lorne "Bonanza" Greene's "Five Card Stud") to Irish balladry ("Dolan's Poker Party"). The same song--"Ace in the Hole" (not the George Strait country favorite)--receives dramatically different readings from the sultry Anita O'Day and the gravel-voiced Dave Van Ronk. Listening to Townes Van Zandt's allegorical "Mr. Mudd and Mr. Gold," you can't help thinking that poker is the perfect metaphor for life (or perhaps that life is the perfect metaphor for poker). --Don McLeese

Ricky Jay Plays Poker.......2007-05-12
Since I collect Magic and Gambling items I was interested in this. Jays items I like very much. They are entertaing and well done.
Ricky Jay fan.......2007-03-24
My husband and I are Ricky Jay fans. We have seen his show Ricky Jay and his 52 assistants. The songs are about poker and cardplaying and are well done. The dvd is even better because it shows his skill. I wouldn't recommend the music unless you are a follower of his work, though, because it isn't exceptional except for topic.
Great music - fascinating video, but too short!.......2007-03-02
Ricky Jay is great. How I would love to hang out around the card table and listen to his stories! This is probably as close as I'll ever get and it's just not enough!
The musical selections and the liner notes on the CD are superb. I'm a music collector, so many of the selections were familiar, but there are some nice surprises here and it's wonderful to have them all collected in one place. The packaging is also quite nice (though I'm not sure I need a deck of cards - it does make a nice touch).
My primary motivation in picking this up, however, was the DVD (spurred on by the tantalizing clip provided above). While it was every bit as fascinating as I'd hoped, it was a bit short (less than 30 minutes). Oddly enough, the clip used to promote it does NOT appear on the DVD!! Even without that fairly obvious clue, it is apparent that there is a lot more footage from the session, so why not include more?? The DVD almost comes off as a promo/teaser for a much larger project. In that sense, it was disappointing, so I docked it a star.
Nevertheless, if you like a good cross-genre thematic compilation and some great backroom double-dealing and story-swapping, don't pass this up.

Customer Reviews:
Not the concert I went to!.......2007-01-26
In late 2006 I attended a terrific Ian Anderson concert in which he traded solos with a marvelously entertaining (and young and pretty) violinist. The concert featured a mixture of multiple genres, including Tull classics. The rock band and symphony blended quite nicely.
I thought this would be the CD version of that concert, but it isn't.
This CD is precisely what I was afraid the concert would be!!!
Bland classical music with some nice Tull tunes that have simply been schmalzified...
Anybody know where I can get the real thing?
PS It's an import, so it's an extra expensive "not worth it"....
Ian Anderson Orchestral Jethro Tull.......2007-01-19
We saw Ian Anderson in concert and loved the show. I bought this CD for my husband for Christmas and it is very well done. Just like being at the show again. I would highly recommend it to any Jethro Tull fan.
Bach Mozart Anderson.......2007-01-09
This is a remarkable recording for the quality of the music, the musicians and the technical recording of the live performances. Mr. Anderson is an accompished classic musician who knows arrangments and is able to fuse classic, rock and jazz into a most enjoyable musical experience. The depth of the arrangements are at the same time both subtle and obvious. Although I have enjoyed the early Tull recordings, its been years since I have listend to Mr. Anderson's music. This recording fortifies Mr. Anderson's position as a musician of our time perhaps as Motzart and Bach were in their time. Another great feature of this recording is that Mr. Anderson enjoys what he does and it shows up here - along with his sharp wit in the lyrics. A terrific recording.
IN THE PAST.......2006-12-07
Ian Anderson is one of the musical geniuses of our time. He has written some of the most amazing rock music and lyrics and was a primary innovator of the art/rock genre some 36 years ago. The fact that Jethro Tull is not in the Rock Hall of Fame is a travesty.
The intrumental tracks (call them songs, tunes, anything but "pieces") on here are outstanding. I can't stress that enough. Equally worth noting is the fact that Ian's voice is shot. Gone. It ain't coming back either. It must be difficult for a songwriter/bandleader to face the possibility of hiring a vocalist to fill his slot as lead singer but it is now a necessity to do so if one plans on continuing along this path. It is disheartening to see tracks like "Skating Away" and "Wondring Aloud" included on this album while the vocals are so weak and so far out of tune. The melodies on this CD are not a far stretch to sing for vocalists possessing even the most average of abilities.
Play minstrel, play......just don't sing.
Bottom line..... I would take a pass on this one....
Arty in small print.......2006-07-20
Nothing as disturbing as rock legends who convert songs into musical "pieces" - the way we generally address classical music. Evenly disturbing are the pointless announcements of a new "piece" by Mr. Anderson, as a 70's dj would announce the next Three Degrees hit in front of a wide sleeved audience.
This is a nice CD, but a 1 CD version would have kept it more interesting. Other than that, this feels almost as Mr. Anderson disagreement or even embarresment for his not-so-cultural, but tenfold more interesting early amplified work. Oh lord, is this a record? It must be an Eglish thing.

GREAT SONGS, MEDIOCRE SOUND.......2007-03-15
I bought this CD specifically because I was disappointed with the
sound of the Collectibles Records "Main Ingredient Golden Classics"
collection. I figured that since this was a Sony/BMG Legacy
2005 release that the remastering would be great. Wrong. It's not
awful, but it's not very good either. Some of the tracks have
a muddy "cassette-like" sound to them. Maybe the original masters
sound that way? In any case, I can't fault Cuba and the guys. This
stuff is prime 70's soul, and even with my complaints I think this
is the best collection of their music out there. "Rolling Down A
Mountainside" is CLASSIC. Sing, guys.....SANG!
GLAD TO HEAR THESE HITS AGAIN.......2007-03-08
THIS CD WAS EXCELLENT. THE LINER NOTES WERE VERY INFORMATIVE. THE QUALITY WAS GREAT. IT WAS WONDERFUL TO EXPERIENCE THE ARTISTIC QUALITY OF THESE SONGS AS DIGITALLY REMASTERED AND RE-EXPERIENCE THE GENIUS OF THESE MUSICIANS. I DOWNLOADED THE ENTIRE ALBUM ONTO MY IPOD AND THE SOUND QUALITY WAS DELICIOUS ESPECIALLY ON "JUST DON'T WANT TO BE LONELY"

Album Description
The buzz is getting out! In the March 2000 issue of Guitar One Magazine titled, "BEST IN THE U.S.", Monte Montgomery was chosen as one of The Best 10 (unknown) Guitarists in America. The article states: "Monte Montgomery was the first artist chosen for this column (the first to make our jaws drop!). His scorching yet musical solos, combined with great pop sensibility in his songwriting, are what cought our ear. But when you consider that he's playing those Van Halen-esque solos on an acoustic guitar with distortion, it becomes a slam dunk" - Guitar One Magazine.
Customer Reviews:
great monte!.......2006-08-16
ah yes! this is one of my favorite cd's. i love all the songs on it. ever since i heard about him and decided to give him a try i just couldnt stop listening to him. his cd is always in the player. in fact i want to get an i pod just so that i can have ALL his cd's available when ever i want and not have to have all his cds. to much to carry. he is just that great!
Please Come to Atlanta.......2006-04-14
I just had to write. I bought this album a couple of years ago based on the recommendation of some guy at a concert. I listened to it once and it just didn't do anything for me, so I put it back on the shelf. Then about two weeks ago I was picking things to play in the car and said okay I'll give it a second chance. It hasn't left the CD player since. I must have played it 15 times. The guy is an amazing guitar player, the hooks are great, the solos are great, recording quality great, and once you get used to them, the vocals are pretty darn good. I have already ordered two more albums by Monte and can't wait to hear them. Now if we can just get him to Atlanta so I can see that incredible playing live.
Rare and Wonderful Talent.......2006-03-20
In this age of MTV, VH1, and American Idol, the emphasis is on looks and not talent. One has to look and act the part to make the big time. Musical talent is secondary. Monte Montgomery will most likely never make it to the top of the music world even though he deserves to be there. He just doesn't look the part. If this were 30 years ago, everyone would know Monte Montgomery and he would be recoginzed for the musical genius he is. This is a real loss for the people who will never know Monte and enjoy his music.
This is Monte's second CD and in my opinion, his best work. He has it all - the melodies, the lyrics, the voice, the guitar vitruosity. Monte doesn't try to prove how fast he can play although guitar enthusiasts will be amazed at what he coaxes out of a beat up Alvarez acoustic guitar. When Monte plays guitar it's a memorable melody that fits the structure of the song perfectly. You may not believe your ears and may think it's all done with electronic tricks but your doubts will be erased when you listen to "When Will I," recorded live at Austin City Limits. Yes, all you hear IS real.
I've been listening to this CD since it was first released and it's still in my CD player. If you love and appreciate good music, buy this. You'll be glad you did.
This is also a Desert Island Disc!.......2006-03-07
This is one of my all time favorite CDs. I was not a fan of acoustic music when my brother first told me to check out Monte back in '99. Monte's guitar virtuosity bridged that gap for me.
I got "1st and Repair" first, so it is a sentimental favorite, but "Mirror" is probably his best disc. There are songs on "1st and Repair" that I'd consider my favorites of Monte's, but "Mirror" is probably a more consistent release. There isn't a dull moment on this CD.
Add it to your shopping cart now!
Highly Recommended / Must Have.......2005-10-07
This was the first Monte CD I heard, then purchased. It is excellent. Monte has a distinct voice, as did Louis Armstrong, which sets him apart from other singers - makes him authentically a one of a kind. Monte has broken through the barriers that hold independent artists out of the mainstream. His work and style are worth studying if you play guitar. Monte is a guitarists guitarist and a songwriter's songwriter. Professionals respect him, fans adore him. You can't go wrong with this one. The solo section of "When Will I" is the definition of a well-organized, inspired solo. As a guitarist and songwriter, I highly recommend that you buy this CD.

The second of back-to-back solo albums cut in the early '80s, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack: The Legendary Sessions Volume Two (originally released as The Brightest Smile in Town) presents a more balanced mix of vocal and instrumental tracks than its predecessor, Dr. John Plays Mac Rebennack. While it's fun to hear the great New Orleans pianist romp through "Box Car Boogie" and patiently work his way through the twilight blues of "Pretty Libby," the unexpected treats are the best: a heartsick version of Jimmy Rodgers's "Waiting for a Train;" a Doc Pomus cover, "Average Kind of Guy," that sounds like Randy Newman on a particularly good day; and "Marie La Veau," a highly syncopated bow to one of the Crescent City's many voodoo queens. By the time Rebennack ends Brightest Smile with two gorgeous instrumentals--a lovely take on Harold Arlen's "Come Rain or Come Shine" and "Suite Home New Orleans"--you're reminded just how encyclopedic his knowledge of American music is. (The 2006 reissue adds six previously unreleased bonus tracks.) --Keith Moerer
Customer Reviews:
Boring bar music.......2007-04-12
I bought the CD because I was looking for piano music and this one was highly recommended by reviewers. Well, it sure is one boring piece of work! I somehow missed reference on the music style. So, to you all who may be doing the same mistake: it is a blues music for bars. Go out Friday night and you'll have a great chance to hear the same music: the never-ending stream of notes to make you feel unworried and thirsty. Nothing great nor "legendary" about it really. It has something specifically American about it that I find difficult to relate to: too common, too simple, too simpleminded, too shortcoming. Sorry, but using piano for instrument doesn't make the music great; the melodies could have been played on harmonica or accordion instead and sold as folk-music.
Rythm and Blues Master.......2006-11-26
Somewhere in the mid-eighties Dr John released plays Mac Rebennack. Where a lot of the good doctor's studio work was at times plagued by mediocrity that release was suddenly a more than solid effort. Mac Rebennack is of course the Night Tripper himself, doctor John was suddenly playing out of his "own" songbook, although a lot of the compositions here are actually originated from some one else's pen. Plays Mac Rebennack gives you the good Doctor at his most pure, just the man and his rolling and funky piano, his rough and gruff voice and a great assortment of songs and instrumentals. The original release focussed on instrumental work, the vol. 2 companion of the re-release with outtakes from the original sessions focuses more on vocal outings of Dr. John from that time.
Plays Mac Rebennack was a highly intimate late night album; the outtake sessions featured here in vol. 2 are much in the same vein. This is not a bad thing at all, listening to this album one can only conclude that the Doctor is much more powerful and compelling when playing all by his lonesome. The album features a lot of different shades, from uninhibited joy to dark melancholy. With tracks like Marie La Veau some of the Night Trippers mystic creep into this album, Boxcar Boogie is a bar room brawl, Touro Infirmary is a strong adaptation of the familiar st. James, Come Rain or Shine is spine chilling.
Every single selection here is played in the Doctor's signature style, highly indebted to Professor Longhair yet very recognisable as Mac Rebennack. Doctor John has long been one of the most eccentric individuals in Rhythm and Blues; Plays Mac Rebennack shows us he's a master. There's not a note to many, during the record he plays his strengths en weaknesses very well. This release and the re-release of the original album were long overdue.
Enjoyable Dr. John.......2006-08-18
This CD features really good blues piano. Sometimes soft and quiet and at other times quite strident. For me,this is really the way the piano should be in this genre. Dr John's vocals (not on all tracks) adds to the authenticity.
Fantastic album.......2006-03-23
A great way to revisit classic Dr. John. Remastered for amazing sound with a TON of bonus tracks...this is a fantastic album for any Dr. John fan or someone looking to get into his stuff. Definitely pick it up!

This "Kat" plays with integrity..........2006-05-24
"Shuggie," played on stage that day with my Uncle "Pee Wee" Crayton and his dad Johnny Otis Sr.; as well as, a host of ledgendary blues fellas at the 1970 Monterey Jazz Festival ("Live at Monterey" CD ~ Johnny Otis)...
His songs are crafted with lots of innovation, independence and freedom of unlimited expression, exhilarating to say the least!
--"Big Dave" Burleigh, 'AmeriCanadian' Record Producre.
THREE AND A HALF STARS.......2005-08-30
Shuggie Otis was/is a great guitar player, and this CD showcases a lot of what he has to offer, HOWEVER, that being said the only fault I can find with him is that he truly did not have a "style' of his own. He is emulating other guitar player's styles on this CD and the cuts are good, but nothing original. Kind of reminds me in a way of Wynton Marsalis, a great trumpet player but someone who does not have his own "sound". Given he was only a kid when he made this record, but still. I think he sells vitamins and health food now.
Things That Could Have Been!.......2003-01-10
Shuggie Otis or Johnny Otis Jr. is somewhat of an anomaly. Shuggie's dad, Johnny Otis senior played guitar and sang with the best of them for many, many years. In 1968 Johnny introduced his 13 year old son to the world on Johnny's comeback CD, "Cold Shot" and the kid was hot. So hot in fact that he was courted by the Rolling Stones and hailed by fans and media alike as a new guitar hero. But it seems Shuggie had other plans and, after releasing a couple of CD's and playing with Frank Zappa on a couple of tracks on Frank's "Hot Rats" CD, Shuggie just quit playing. He retired from the music world at the ripe old age of 22. This compilation pulls from the blues songs he actually recorded and shows us what might have been. The guitar playing is fantastic although the recordings seem a little weak causing you to turn up the volume just to get a decent tone. The material is a little dated but it's a valuable addition to any collection.
Blues Guitar Prodigy.......2002-03-03
Shuggie Otis is at the top of the "Whatever Happened To" file of talented musicians who burned brightly and then seemingly disappeared from public view. His last official album was cut in 1975 when he was still only 22 years old! This disc covers Kooper Sessions: Al Kooper Introduces Shuggie Otis (tracks 1 and 12), Here Comes Shuggie Otis (tracks 2, 3, 4 and 11), Freedom Flight (tracks 5, 8 and 10), and The Johnny Otis Show (tracks 6 and 7). "Cold Shot" is a previously unreleased track from 1970. Otis's vocals were not his strong suit--he does a decent enough job on "Me and My Woman," however, and Sugarcane Harris does vocals on "I Can Stand To See You Die"--but the rest of the album places the focus squarely on his guitar playing. With influences ranging from B.B. King to T-Bone Walker to Freddie King to Son House and Elmore James, Otis combines these elements to create a style all his own. Keep in mind that every track on this album was recorded before Otis turned 18! The only reason I did not give this five stars is that there is nothing from 1975's Inspiration Information, which contains his original version of "Strawberry Letter 23" before it became a huge hit for the Brothers Johnson a couple years later. RECOMMENDED

The recordings here come from the same October 1960 sessions that produced My Favorite Things, and while the all-blues album is far less famous, it's an equivalent document of John Coltrane's work in his earliest recordings of the quartet with drummer Elvin Jones and pianist McCoy Tyner. The all-blues format emphasizes Coltrane's personal relationship to the form, both his emotional depth and his capacity for harmonic extension on essentially modal materials. His soprano on "Blues to Bechet" is a summoning up of the blues form's original power, also apparent in the slow and moving "Blues to Elvin." "Blues to You," played with just Jones and bassist Steve Davis, is a hot coil of sound, Coltrane's convoluted lines twisting into new shapes while he and Jones catch every possible nuance of the beat. "Mr. Knight" would later turn into "India," but it's already a floating modal figure for his tenor. This edition includes the alternate takes previously available only in the box set The Heavyweight Champion. --Stuart Broomer
Customer Reviews:
Great CD, well delivered.......2007-02-09
I'm very happy with this transaction. The supplier did a fine job, and John Coltraine did, too. Very satisfied.
The blues is a large universe.......2007-01-22
John Coltrane has a reputation as a fearless pusher at the boundaries of jazz, but he was also one of the great blues players in jazz. Hence it's not surprising that he released an entire album of blues compositions. In lesser hands, this could have turned into an exercise in monotony; but the six compositions on Coltrane Plays the Blues are wildly diverse, keeping things exciting the whole way through. He plays tenor sax on four tunes and his then-new soprano on two. McCoy Tyner sits out on a few tracks, leaving a piano-less trio of Coltrane, Steve Davis and Elvin Jones. "Blues to Elvin" is more traditional, and very "down home". "Blues to You" is the most avant-garde performance, a barebones trio performance that clearly anticipates "Chasin' the Trane" (from the 1961 Village Vanguard engagement). "Mr. Knight" has a theme similar to "India" (also from the Vanguard) though it doesn't maintain the same one-chord drone.
Overall this is a fantastic album. Any fan of Coltrane's other Atlantic albums should pick it up. This was one of three albums Coltrane recorded with his new quartet in October 1960 -- get all of them. (The other two were My Favorite Things and Coltrane's Sound.)
These are *my* favorite things!.......2006-08-15
Coltrane's Classic Quartet originated with these sessions, which took place in just a couple of days in October 1960. He had discovered the drummer Elvin Jones and the pianist McCoy Tyner, and simultaneously he had been introduced to the miraculous discovery of modal jazz through working with Miles Davis.
"Coltrane Plays the Blues" collects together six blues tunes that showcase his new style, as well as showing off his soprano saxophone, which would become his signature instrument.
"Blues to Elvin" is a cool tune that should really be called "Blues to McCoy". A track that is enjoyable and well-balanced.
"Blues to Bechet" is Coltrane's tribute to Sidney Bechet, played on that ancient master's favourite instrument, the soprano saxophone. Sadly this tune is less dear to me, partly because of Coltrane's slightly hesitant soprano work (he stays in tune, but does not take advantage of the new horn as on "My Favorite Things") but also because this tune should not have followed "Blues to Elvin". It sounds too similar, and I would have put this tune well after.
"Blues to You" should sound oddly familiar to those who listen to Coltrane's Impulse records. This is a trio blues with McCoy dropping out, similar to "Chasin the Trane". In fact, this tune actually IS Chasin' the Trane. Or rather, it is the tune that is named as "Chasin' Another Trane" from the Village Vanguard box. Listen carefully to it! In fact, listen to the end of one of the alternate takes and you'll hear the opening theme of "Chasin' the Trane" itself! Coincidence? Or did Rudy von Gelder, who named the Vanguard takes, realise that this was an Atlantic tune and rename it on the sly?
At any rate, it is the tune that most clearly points the way to the future, the second alternate being quite ferocious.
"Mr Day" is the most famous tune on the disc, but also the least interesting, I feel.
"Mr Syms", named for Coltrane's barber, is a soprano sax piece of a jolly temper.
"Mr Knight", a prototype for yet another Vanguard performance (think "subcontinental") and a strange and unusual melody.
COLTRANE PLAYS THE BLUES: excellent.......2005-09-21
this is Coltrane's spin on the blues. his playing is great and there are quite a few unexpected turns. a unique blues based jazz album.
Highly enjoyable listen.......2005-05-15
While not quite up to the standard of "My Favorite Things", this is Coltrane playing at his best. The album as a whole does suffer a little for being limited only to blues tunes, but the quality of the playing more than makes up for this. Don't get this as your first Coltrane album, but if you are already a fan and need something more than just his most popular albums, this is a great choice.

Album Description
John Lennon & Paul McCartney, Burt Bacharach and Stevie Wonder have been among the most original, influential and prolific songwriters to emerge after the advent of rock and roll. Jazz musicians have always had a keen ear for pop tunes of lasting quality since Coleman Hawkins covered "Body And Soul." Blue Note celebrates the work of these great songwriters with three collections that gather inventive, defining versions of some of their finest compositions.

Where is the Love?.......2005-09-28
Take a listen to the samples and you'll soon discover Fab-4 creations with no soul, no feeling, no phrasing, and no love. All you need is love and this album has none.
Seamless Collection.......2005-03-14
"Blue Note Plays the Beatles" is a good set that will please both jazz fans & Beatle fans -- and there are a lot of both! :) All of these tracks have been previously released. Recorded in 1964, Stanley Turrentine grooves delightfully on one of the Fab Four's early tunes "Can't Buy Me Love." This is a smashing opener to this set. Buddy Rich's 1967 version of "Norwegian Wood" states the melody with a huge brass section before taking off on a series of improvisations. Chet Baker's honey-drenched flugelhorn and Bud Shank's sexy sax are front & center on this 1967 version of "Hello Goodbye." One of the most successfully experimental treatments of the Beatles' tune is on Grant Green's 1970 reading of "A Day in the Life" with Green's funky guitar re-creating the now familiar melody. Stanley Jordan similarly explores the elasticity of the "Eleanor Rigby" melody with his guitar and Sammy Figueroa's percussion. Holly Cole stays close to the melody on her vocals of "I've Just Seen A Face," but looses some of the urgency of love that made the original so riveting. Bobby McFerrin's 1988 recording of "Drive My Car" is an utter delight with his acappella version of this excellent tune. Blue Note has done an excellent job of remastering these recordings spanning a 32-year period, making them seem to fit together as a seamless collection. Enjoy!
Very enjoyable.......2004-06-28
The arrangements of these songs are perfect. If you are looking for a jazz CD with nice melodies that is not too heavy or that won't put you to sleep, I think you'll enjoy this one. You know the songs. The musicians put a nice spin on the tunes without hacking them up. Especially nice is the arrangement of "A Day In The Life".

80's moog music.......2007-06-27
If you are into 80's music that's heavy on the moog and the synthesizer then this cd is for you. It's like a not so dark Gary Numan, but with a real nice groove. So pop the cd in your Camaro and comb your mullet and enjoy the jams.

This excellent collection gathers songs not only from the US CD "Love an Adventure", but the even more new wave sounding songs from the groups 1984 debut LP. Note that a couple of songs from that first LP were eventually redone for the "Love an Adventure" US release, so some of the 12" versions on here are actually DIFFERENT 12" mixes than the US 12" versions--namely "a Beat for You" and "Listening". Just wish they would release the entire first album on CD. Track times:
1. listening (5:35)
2. a beat for you (7:26)
3. stranger in me (6:04)
4. Don't Go (6:40)
5. Love an Adventure (6:21)
6. Living in a Dream (5:39)
7. Destination Unknown (5:48)
8. Funky Town (6:35)
WHO HAS 'LOVE AN ADVENTURE??'.......2002-03-05
This is simply an amazing album! I had the cassette when I was in junior high. It is awesome music, simply put. If you have it, please let me know where you got it. These guys should have been a whole lot bigger than they were. I'll pay top dollar for the CD!
80's At It's Best.......2001-04-21
Let me admit that I had never heard that much of these guys even though I claim to be a big fan of the 80's new wave bands. I originally investigated this album because I had heard several of the songs on the soundtrack to North Shore (a very entertaining surf movie). When I realized that three of the songs that I heard and liked in the movie were from Pseudo Echo, I bought the album. This album is very entertaining if not for its originality, at least for its execution of classic 80s synth new wave. There are times when this band sounds like OMD, Depeche, Oingo and a myriad of other bands from that time (there is a classic OMD 'loop' moment on one of the songs - if you buy the CD you'll know when you hear it). I won't argue who was the original in this situation, but I will tell you that this album is as entertaining and listenable as one from any of the other bands I previously mentioned and is well worth a purchase if you're looking to get turned on to 'new' music that is close to 20 years old. A must for any fan of 80s new wave.
