4 out of 5 stars Infectious Mood, Glorious Tunes.......2004-09-04

Before purchasing this CD I had never heard of Léo Délibes (1836 -1891), and it is a measure of the confidence I had (and still have) in Naxos that I bought the disc anyway. And I was not disappointed. I suppose you could in one sense say that ballet music without the visual experience of the ballet is like using toothpaste when you don't have any teeth; but the music on this disc tastes so good that it's really worth listening to anyway. Délibes was obviously a master of this genre, and here on this CD there are gathered some of his best tunes in his wonderfully varied and rich orchestrations. This is a hum-along, foot-tapping job, but with plenty of musical detail to keep one's mind busy, too. The "Airs de danse dans le style ancien" from the play "Le Roi s'amuse" have kept me fascinated ever since I first heard the disc: they don't sound in the least like the French music of a century or two earlier, but still they manage to evoke a bygone age. And the brief extracts from Coppélia, Sylvia, La Source and Kassya all contain delightful material that is certainly more than just a backdrop for a troupe of ballet dancers.

The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra under Ondrej Lénard seems to have greatly enjoyed making the disc (at three recording sessions in 1988 and 1989). The musicians go at it with great gusto, and the mood is quite infectious. If I fail to award this disc five stars, then it is for the following reasons: 1. The recorded sound, although adequate, is not at all top-notch. A fellow Amazonite has described the early Naxos sound as "cavernous". I'm not sure that's the word I would choose, but at all events you have to imagine the microphones as being placed quite well away from the orchestra so as to capture the entirety of the sound better than the detail. Naxos does not manipulate its sound, which is positive, but the dynamic differences between the very loud passages and the quieter ones often mean that as a listener one feels that the more piano passages are not loud enough; if you turn the volume up, you get your ears blasted when the whole orchestra comes into play. 2. Connected with this is my feeling that the percussion could, in some instances, have been amplified: crashing cymbals should crash, but these sound almost as though they are behind the stage and not on it. 3. The documentation is, again, adequate, but I found the description of the plot of Coppélia confusing. Some more information about the music itself would also have been welcome but was not forthcoming.

Note added on 20 October 2005: It is perhaps a measure of the success of the Naxos disc that it motivated me to purchase the entire Coppélia ballet on DVD (in the historically accurate and wonderfully-produced performance of the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, on BBC Opus Arte). What a superb piece of entertainment this is!

5 out of 5 stars Le roi s'amuse: reason enough to own this CD.......2002-04-10

The music from "Le Roi S'Amuse" is reason enough to own this CD. While they imitate older musical forms (much like Respighi's "Ancient Airs and Dances"), these seven tracks also exhibit the virtues of Delibes' more familiar ballet music: tuneful, elegant, and eminently danceable.
The music from La Source is such a tiny sample, it's almost a tease. But the Coppelia tracks capture the highlights of that ballet. While I prefer recordings of the complete ballet, there's no denying that Ondrej Lenard coaxes very spirited renditions from his orchestra. The "Music of the Automata and Waltz" has a music-box quality that is very charming, and the Czardas is strong and resonant without being exaggerated.
To those interested in ballet and unfamiliar with Delibes - whose work set a new standard in ballet and inspired Tchaikovsky - this CD is a wonderful introduction. But even if you already have Coppelia in your collection, this CD is worthwhile because of "Le Roi S'Amuse."

3 out of 5 stars Subpar for a wonderful singer.......2005-09-25

Kathleen Battle ended her operatic career on a sour note when she was fired from the MET, and this album somehow reflects that--it lacks her usual vivacity and joy. This is the only recital I've heard form her that's routine, and things aren't helped by the fact that her voice, a light colorature, isn't substantial enough for many of these arias, which are for a lyric soprano. All i all, a disappointment.

4 out of 5 stars Very good album.......2001-10-31

I disagree with the reviewer who pointed out that the top of Kathleen Battle's range is "strident." On the contrary, you'd be hard pressed to find a modern soprano whose high Ds and E-flats are prettier--Dessay comes to mind, or Gruberova. You just can't sing these notes like you sing the notes in the more comfortable part of your range (unless you're Mado Robin and this IS the most comfortable part of your range). I do agree, however, that in many of these arias she seems detached from the text, particularly, as the other reviewer mentioned, in Ophelie's mad scene. She seems most at home in the happier arias such as the one from La Fille du Regiment, which is performed superbly. Interestingly enough, this is the role she was singing when she was fired from the Metropolitan Opera. I can't help but wonder what she was thinking as she was recording this (probably something along the lines of "I'll show them...")

3 out of 5 stars Good But I Expected Much Better.......2001-02-01

As I said in the title of this review, this album is good however I expected better from Kathleen Battle in this repertoire. Better because much of Ms. Battle's recorded output is top-shelf. Like Ms. Battle's other efforts, this CD contains singing that is almost beyond reproach, technically speaking, but for the most part it does not sound as if she is emotionally engaged in the individual arias. (For instance, in the HAMLET aria, her Ophelia sounds entirely too composed. This is, after all, a "mad scene" but it sounds like the LOUISE aria in which the character is waxing poetic on the issue of love.) There is very little, if any, differentiation in the tone color and timbre; it sounds like one long song. Also, many of the high notes (the C's, D's, and E-flats) sound very hard, it's easy to hear the effort it took to ascend to these notes perched near the top of the scale. These notes stand out because the majority of the rest of her range is very limpid and pleasing, as opposed to strident. Also of note, on this recording Ms. Battle has a problem with pushing for a bigger sound that her lyric-coloratura/soubrette voice cannot support. Listen, for instance, to tracks 4 and 10 which cry out to be tackled by a larger instrument with more power. Perhaps had I been unfamiliar with Ms. Battle then I could give this album a 5-star endorsement but, as is, I can only give it 3 stars. Pick up an album on which she sings Mozart, Strauss, or bel canto for that is where she really excels.

5 out of 5 stars Simply supeb........2000-04-17

Kathleen is my absolute favorite opera star. Her angelic voice touches the soul as always and her unmatched technical precision leaves her head above her peers. She truly redefines the word DIVA. I'm afraid I'm going to spoil it for myself due to constant play of this album. I'm looking for a comparable voice for variety. Needless to say, I have failed miserably. The first selection, a little tribute to France, is something else. If I were french, I would initiate a drive to make this the national anthem. This is a must for collector's library.

4 out of 5 stars Especially Good Version of "Le Roi S'Amuse".......2003-06-19

A few years back I discovered Delibes' charming music for "Le Roi S'Amuse" on Naxos "Best of French Ballet" album (ASIN B0000013JQ). I'd never seen another recording until I encountered French Ballet Music. Now I'm very happy to have a "fresh" interpretation. Yes, the original recording was done in the late 1950s, and it's not absolutely clean. But Beecham's interpretation is wonderful. He heightens all the contrasts of tempo and dynamic range. When the violins pluck the strings, you feel as if you're sitting right in the section, listening. The Debussy "Afternoon of a Faun" has the same kind of color and drama.
As far as the Gounod (Faust) and Massenet music go, I'd look elsewhere. I prefer Bernstein's Gounod (ASIN: B0000027N8). And for Massenet's Cinderella, I like Kenneth Jean's version for Naxos (ASIN: B000069CUZ) because I think the March of the Princesses is a better piece of music than the "waltz" on this CD.
"French Ballet Music" is very much a "classic" recording: it doesn't sound like anything recorded in the last 10 years. But if you're curious about Beecham as a conductor of ballet music, this is a wonderful sampler.

3 out of 5 stars Nice recordings, circa 1960.......2003-02-05

These selections were recorded from 1957 to 1961. The noise floor is noticable, but acceptable. The Gounod and Massenet selections are recorded in mono; the others are in stereo (this is clear on the CD labeling, but not the Amazon.com description).

If these limitations of the source material are acceptable to you, this is a nice album artistically. For perfect recording technology, you will want to look elsewhere.

        5 out of 5 stars OH, MY!.......2002-11-09

There are not enough stars in Amazon's system to do justice to these miraculous performances. The Schumann, though abreviated, is sublime. (The same forces recorded the complete work a few years later.) It is truly a legendary performance. But, for me, the thing here is the Arensky performed with his friend Harold Bauer. Some great performances announce themselves within the first few seconds & you relax & sit back knowing it's going to be a perfect ride. Other great performances don't leave you time. They grab you by the shoulders. You lean forward into the performance wanting to get as close to it as possible. Time stops. Afterwords, you collect your thoughts & exclaim, 'Oh, my'. There's not another recorded performance like this of anything by anyone anywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Treasures From The "Poet of The Piano".......1999-11-24

Before he became conductor of the Detroit Symphony, Ossip Gabrilowitsch was known as one of the great Russian-born piano soloists. His technique was legendary, earning him acclaim as the "poet of the piano" by no less a personage than Bruno Walter, Even after taking up the Detroit post (indeed, Orchestra Hall was built as a condition of his accepting the position) he continued to concertize as a soloist.

This disc offers 15 of his piano recordings made during the 1920's, before his illness and untimely death in 1936 at the age of 58. (His wife, Clara Clemens, daughter of Mark Twain, survived into the 1960's). Of historical interest are two of his own short compositions, Melody in E Minor, Op. 8, and Caprice, Op. 3.

However, the real gems in this collection are his justifiably famous duet with Harold Bauer of the Arensky Waltz, and the equally famous performance with the Flonzaley Quartet of the Schumann Quintet for Piano and Strings in E-Flat, Op. 44. The latter is in a slightly abridged version - no doubt to meet the limitations of 78 rpm acoustic rercording technology - but the music is superb. Very highly recommended.
