Big Dixie

Editorial Reviews
From the Label
In the Forties and Fifties, Dixieland's definition was being expanded by jazz musicians like Eddie Condon, Muggsy Spanier and Sidney Bechet, from within and outside New Orleans. This compilation compares their extensions of the style with the music of Louis Armstrong, King Oliver, Bix Beiderbecke and other earlier masters of Dixieland to form a keen survey of this exuberant, uniquely American art form.

For those of you who enjoy the music, as it was sung and played during the Civil War, this recording is a "must!" J.A. McA.

So shoot me. I like bagpipe music and I like fife and drum recordings and I like brass bands. Recently cruisin' the Internet brought me to the website of a company called Summit Records out in Arizona; and my eye was caught by the title (DCD 126) with a group calling itself The Americus Brass Band. I obtained a copy post haste and I want to all to know about it with equal rapidity. There is just short of 55 minutes of Civil War tunes played in a style that is "historically accurate, right down to the high military pitch and the clicking of the rotary valves on the original antique instruments employed" (as the notes tell us). The history of the band is available in those notes, so let me just dwell on the "music that still produces feelings of humor, joy, sadness, and patriotic pride." Well, what music does not produce at least one of those?--and I am not entirely sure there was anything about the Civil War of which we on either side should be particularly proud. But Sing a Song of Suffering seems to be an eternal way of making the best of a rotten situation during war time; and this CD is replete with such memories as "Tenting Tonight," "Amazing Grace," "Woodman, Spare That Tree," and even a little bit of the "William Tell Overture" and a Meyerbeer opera! In short, this is not the expected line up of soldier songs but selections that are "typical of that which might have been played by a group such as the Americus Brass band." I love it. Give it a try, please.

    Album Description

Super 8 Cum Shot (S8CS) drapes heavy punk rock sensibilities over sexually provocative lyrics, catchy songwriting and stimulating live performances that shatter rock music conventions with a good-natured, bawdy and unforgettable punk/party/pop/porno experience.

Fronted by strapping über gay wad Jinx Titanic, and super charged by guitarist Machine Gun Garofalo, drummer Posey "T-Mint" Parker and bassist Dax Malkovich, S8CS mounts a hilarious assault of rip-roaring garage rock melodies and stinging, satirical lyrics that spare no one yet bite without breaking the skin.

On your face and in your pants, Super 8 Cum Shot Volume II picks up exactly where Volume I left off. "I Love A Boy" is fag punk in it's purest and queerest form, "Oh Daddy" features a son asking his father about his sexual exploits while incarcerated, and "Everybody Loves a Muscle Boi" is the ideal follow up to Volume I's "Hollywood Beach."

Echoing Volume I in the way that it introduces each song with a snippet from a porno movie, a virtual f@ckfest links Volume II's ten songs, every track fully guaranteed to bring you to the brink on more than one occasion.

Super 8 Cum Shot Volume II, the party continues with twice the vice, shooting a white hot explosion of orgasmic sound straight toward...where else...Uranus.

        Album Description

"Dixie By Dorsey" features twelve Dixieland favorites, vigorously and brilliantly played by Jimmy Dorsey and an aggregation known as the Original "Dorseyland" Jazz Band (which included trumpeter Charlie Teagarden, trombonist Cutty Cutshall and tenor saxophonist Frank Maynes). Also using Dixieland "ideas" as a basis, the second album on this pairing is his band's contribution to Columbia's Dance Parade series. Includes two bonus tracks.

        Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dorsey and Dixieland Go Hand in Hand.......2007-03-03

We usually associate Jimmy Dorsey with his big band hits, featuring Helen O'Connell, however, he and his brother Tommy came up through the ranks of great jazz, recording on many sides with Red Nichols. In this CD, he brings together a truly all-star group, with an outstanding rhythm section led by drummer Ray Bauduc of the Bob Crosby Bobcats. Dorsey's sides record many of the Dixieland classics, however, "Clap Hands, Here Comes Charlie" is a great addition, along with "Levee Blues". It's my favorite LP and CD of Jimmy Dorsey sides. It originally was an LP for Columbia and a must for the collector of outstanding jazz musicians.

I love the Chicks ... if you love them, buy this CD and burn it, take the ashes and microwave them, take the goo that is left over and flush it ... and pray that an alligator swallows it and then chokes to death on it!
This is the worst CD that was ever produced, short of anything that William Shatner ever sang ... (my apologies to my fellow Canadian for saying that, too!)
This is an insult to any ear drums that are on the planet ... if there was a minus 5000 stars, I would give it ... it is an insult to the Chicks ... lord have mercy!

                1 out of 5 stars Absolutely Horrible.......2003-04-25

Don't buy this CD. I wasn't paying attention and thought this was a collection of Dixie Chick music by the Dixie Chicks. Instead, it is a messy attempt by unknown singers to emulate the Chicks. They fail miserably. If you want Dixie Chicks music buy Dixie Chicks albums.

What's next, "A Tribute to Hank Jr." by the Vienna Boys Choir? The only thing worse than this cd is a barium enema..and even then, it's a close race.

1 out of 5 stars Should be zero stars.......2002-06-24

What is this CD? Awful, that's what. The album consists of terrible cover after terrible cover of some of the Dixie Chicks' best songs. It sounds less like a "tribute" and more like a group of [singers] trying to capitalize on Dixie Chicks' success by vaguely labelling their album in the hopes that someone will buy it under the impression that it contains some music that is anywhere near the Chicks' caliber. Don't waste your time. All the songs are taken under tempo and sung as if the lyrics were being read off a bouncing-ball karaoke screen. What makes the Chicks so great is the vivacity that is present in all of their songs, a vivacity that this "tribute" album sorely lacks. If you want to hear Dixie Chicks music, buy one of their albums, for God's sake. This is one tribute we could all have done without.

1 out of 5 stars Not worth it!.......2002-03-13

First of all, the description in Amazon, and every other Web site I looked on, does not tell you which "various artists" are on this CD. So being the true Dixie Chicks fan that I am, bought it anyway. What a waste of [money]. I still don't know who is singing on this CD! On the back it says something about "This tribute record by rising young stars, the Nashville Girls of Country.." I'm just completely turned off by that. I was hoping for some other well-known country stars or friends of the Dixie Chicks like Sheryl Crow or someone like that. Good luck if you are still interested.
