Jean Sablon's "Le Fiacre" was why I bought this CD but there is so much more pleasant music on it, and well transferred to CD too. A bonus, thanks to Google, is that it is easy to find all the words, and a rough translation, of each I've tried so far.

This is almost identical in content to another CD I purchased years ago, but the sound quality is much, much better. I am unsure whether the producers simply got their hands on better masters, or whether a different filtering technique is in use. For pre-WW II work the sound quality is very pleasant. This CD is an excellent introduction to the music that captivated the world between wars; my non-French-speaking friends have found themselves enjoying it. It may also serve as a gateway to the purchase of individual artists' volumes. Highly recommended!

I really like this CD. Being a long-time fan of his singing style and melodious voice, about anything he sings gets my attention though. Still, it's a nice combination of songs.

I think maybe Amazon's title for this product is incorrect. The correct title is "le saxophone Francais". I took the liberty to upload a couple of images of the front and back covers of the CD.
This is a really impressive collection of pieces in the classic French saxophone tradition.
The first CD consists of music for alto saxophone and piano performed by Jean-Marie Londeix. The highlight of the selections (for me) was the Paul Creston Sonata. This CD contained 73.32 minutes of music!
The second CD consists of saxophone quartet music performed by the Deffayet Saxophone Quartet. This is truly amazing quartet music. The above review is correct...close your eyes and it sounds like a string quartet at times. This CD contains 74.16 minutes of music!
The third CD contains music for alto saxophone with piano and orchestra. The first half of the CD are selections performed by Jean-Marie Londeix, the second half are selections performed by Marcel Mule. The highlight of this CD (for me) were the selections by Marcel Mule. This CD contains 77.40 minutes of music.
It is really too bad that Amazon didn't bother to list the selections and give sound samples of the selections.
If you are in to legitimate saxophone my advice is to buy these CD's now!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great CDs with Great prices.......2005-08-05

I recently bought the CD and i was stunned by the artistry of Jean-Marie Londeix and also, the CONTROL of Mr. Deffayet's soprano playing. Deffayet's quartet is the best i've heard and it blends beautifully. They even sound like a string quartet sometimes, and that's why deffayet was the professor at paris conservatory. Londeix was in Bourdeu and he introduced people from America, japan... everywhere in the world to study with him. Londeix and Deffayet dont really get along but both of them respect and enjoy each other's playing. Oh! also, Marcel mule, father of saxophone, plays brilliantly. But, i still think Londeix playing is the best! I recently bought "the master of the modern saxophone" a book wrote by his student, james Umble. It not only imrproved my playing; It also disciplined my life. This CD and the book are both must buys for saxophone players(classical mostly. Buy it and you will be pleased with it!

    The role of Salud in Falla's La Vida Breve is the role which brought the great Victoria de Los Angeles to international fame, ever since she sang it on a BBC Broadcast in the late 40s. This recording, boasting a total Spanish cast, gives a heartfelt and totally idiomatic reading. De Los Angeles totally convinces as Salud, singing with great sympathy and gives an incredibly touching portrayal of the gypsy girl. She IS Salud and will perhaps never be surpassed in the role. Rivadeneyra gives an intense portrayal as the grandmother and Cossutta's Paco is appropriately shallow as the faithless lover. Rafael Fruhbeck de Burgos conducts with idiom and vigour. Sound quality is wonderful. Highly recommended.

    If you are as tired as I am of canned Christmas muzak, you will find this to be refreshing, beautiful, and uplifting for the season of Christ's birth.

    I was looking for something different from all the popular American Chirstmas music that has been re-done so many times. Here is a collection that satisfied me, and will delight both Franco-phones and Anglo-phones (English speakers) Some of the pieces are very chant like, but others are lively songs with lots of energy. Especially notable are tracks # 18, Or vous trémoussez, pasteurs de Judée, # 13, Noe, Noe, and my personal favorite, # 27, O l'heureuse journée. You likely will not recognize any of the tunes, so it may take a bit for this album to sound like Christmas, but it quickly did for me. The ancient instruments employed also give the music a unique sound that is really neat. This is a CD worth purchasing

    I am a musician and a medieval history buff, and first heard the Beauvais segments of this recording over the car radio, as I parked intending to do some Christmas shopping. I could not leave the car until the last note was sung and immediately began a search for the recording. The music is so...right, like a little time trip, haunting, triggering the imagination.

    Piotr delivers and intersting Bach interpretation, although in a somewhat personal unorthodox way (thank God!). Not far away from Pianist God-Devil Glenn Gould in how he approaches the music. Having said that, Piotr does however not play as engaging as Gould, and often there is a certain mechanical tempo in his playing. Worth a check though if you're into Bach on piano, although Gould and Schiff are two other very strong candidates that would be my first and second choices.

    There have been a few incomparable Bach players.Here is another.This series of recordings celebrates the emerging talent of the new generation.Very few pianists would choose to give a Bach recital;why not choose something big and show off your talent?This Polish master could'nt care less because he cares about music.He seems to say that this is what I play for myself and you can listen if you like but what I do is what the music tells me and not what sounds clever or flashy.The result needs no comparison with anyone because Anderszewski is his own man and is utterly new ,original and sings along,or declaims, with the joy of simply being alive.My old music teacher told me that if you are ever ill then listening to Bach will put you in touch with the structure of the universe and make you feel better.This disc,especially the French Suite,is worth a lot of pills and visits to psycho and other therapists.

    Maybe people think that the age of great interpreters and great performances is over,that there are no Lippatis,Rubensteins or Paderewskis left.There are.Here is the proof.This pianist is of Polish-Hungarian ancestry and French upbringing.His Polish grandfather was part of the resistance to Nazi tyranny and died in Aushwitz.His sister Dorota is leader of a European orchestra and they often play in public together.They have recorded together and have many dates over the next season,including Wigmore Hall in May.His programmes attack any notion that music can be popularized and include large chunks of Szymanowski,Bach and his idol Beethoven.Given the choice to record whatever he wanted on this disc he typically chose two big and uncompromising works of Bach.In Dublin in March he insisted on ending his recital with the French Suite no 5.Only a great pianist could dare an audience to focus their concentration so completely at the end of a recital that he would be given the freedom not to play at them but for himself alone.That is what he did and it worked.Here on this disc it works too.My old piano teacher used to say that if you are upset,depressed or ill then listen to Bach because it will put you in touch with absoloute truth and so with healing.This Bach has no crazed mannerisms,no self-indulgence and nothing but the priviledge of hearing one of the great pianists contemplating the infinite mystery of a mind so devoted to the truth that it enters the realm of the divine.
