Groove Tones

Editorial Reviews
MELISSA RUGGIERI, Richmond Times-Dispatch NOVEMBER 12, 1998
On its first album since 1996's "I Can't Hold Back" Plunky & Oneness returns with the same seductive saxophone-laden jazz that has garnered the group national acclaim. Led by the stunning J. Plunky Branch, who moves seamlessly from alto to tenor sax, the rest of the band converges for a tasty mixture of Afro-jazz-funk, with a little traditional R&B thrown in the mix. Fellow Richmonders Jazz Poets Society lend a hand on several tracks, laying down some husky poetry and whispered mysteries while Plunky's sax wafts in the background. Yes, this technique does get repetitive - and seems a tad pretentious when used so often - but there are enough mixed tempos and whizzing notes to keep those songs from becoming somnolent.

On "Just Know That I Love You," Charlayne Page provides the romantic purr to the pretty tune, which bleeds with the type of '70's soul rarely heard these days. Page is equally effective on an appealing arrangement of " My Funny Valentine." The album's other female voice, Tonya Lazenby, is a deeper alternative to Page, but Lazenby blends well with Plunky's mid-range vocals on the uplifting lite-funk of "Don't Be Afraid of Freedom."

The highlight of the album, however, comes with Plunkys aching tones on his version of Gershwin's "Summertime." Pure class.
