Individuality (Can I Be Me?)

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
The voice! On Individuality Rachelle Ferrell's astonishing instrument (as it certainly deserves to be called) soars and swoops through a six-octave range, which makes her a rarity in the modern R&B of nubile sopranos. Ferrell is as comfortable delivering a deep, velvety growl as a soprano soar. Her work as a jazz singer-songwriter has clearly sharpened her vocal technique and added a perceptive subtlety to the arrangements that accompany it, which dwell in sweet 'n' lowdown, unplugged bass territory. Individuality is a compact, intensely personal album. It covers topics from sisterhood ("Sista") to jilted love ("I Gotta Go"), all through the eyes of a mature woman. With this album's unslick production and sincerity, Ferrell continues to set herself apart from the pack, expanding the parameters of R&B to accommodate her and her voice, not vice versa. --Lizz Mendez Berry --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Be Fooled by the Reviews :(.......2007-02-25

I purchased this album thinking it would be incredible considering the rave reviews. I remember Rachelle's sultry voice from the early 90s and remembered some of her performances and decided to purchase an album. Well to my surprise, this album did not turn out to be what I expected. I truly think this is a very bad, sloppy and boring album. I had purchased this album along with her self-titled album Rachelle Farrell and this have had to been the worst purchases I've ever made on amazon along with Earl Klugh's Naked Guitar. Her albums sound like demos and although Individuality was made 12 years after her self-titled album, the album did not sound any different. There was absolutely no growth despite the reviews claiming to have had a fresh new sound.

4 out of 5 stars Rachelle Ferrell.......2007-02-03

An interesting individual who sets has set her soul to music. Four stars!!

5 out of 5 stars What a Voice.......2006-12-15

This woman has a voice that is indescribable. Vocally, I do not think that anyone can touch her or Teena Marie. Their voices are definitely God given. This CD is excellent and Rachelle is an artist in a rare form.

5 out of 5 stars Music of HER mind..........2005-02-04

I saw Rachelle perform at the Newport jazz festival around 93/94 when she was promoting her first CD. I was impressed with her voice and her singing, but outside of a few forgettable originals she was just rehashing standards I've heard a thousand times before. From that point on I never really thought about buying any of her music...but I respected her as a singer and performer because of her talent.

A couple years ago a friend of mine (who is more into vocalists than I am) recommended this CD to me and I told him my opinion of Rachelle. He then told that "If that's the way you feel then you should DEFINITELY run out and by this CD". He was telling me that this CD was a statement of independence from her previous record contract that was forcing to just use her voice to rehash old standards and go for that gimmicky appeal of her multi-octive range (think Stanley Jordan on guitar). This CD, on the other hand, was all about the music SHE wanted to make...hence the title "Individuality(Can I be me)?"

I decided to give her another shot and boy was I glad I did.
The kind of music she wanted to make is exactly the kind of music I like to listen to! The vocalese, the instrumentation,
the songwriting, and the arrangements are all stellar. Add in the outstanding recording quality and it's also a great CD to test out your audiphile equipment.

Can you Remember and Mess it All up are my personal favs...but there is plenty to love here. Hopefully her future projects will focus on the type of music SHE wants to perform and not have to appease clueless self centered record executives.

Can you imagine how much music we would have been denied if Stevie Wonder hadn't taken the same stand against Motown in the early 70's? Ditto Ray Charles, Thelonious Monk, et al.

If you like this type of music I can also recommend Peace Beyond Passion by Me'shell N'deocello. Also an outstanding recording. Her politics may be abrasive to some...but who cares?! It's all about the music! Dionne Farris' solo album
also come to mind.

5 out of 5 stars One word -- Awesome!.......2005-01-07

Rachelle Ferrell continues to mesmorize. Her voice is amazing, her lyrics have depth, and her spirit is boundless. She has truly put out another great album. I have every one, and try my best to see her each time she performs in the Atlanta area! I just wish that the masses would lift her to the level she deserves. My only complaint is that she makes us wait TOO LONG! I can hardly wait for the next project. I expect the best!

5 out of 5 stars Unspoken Words speaks volumes.......2000-11-13

Great compositions that range from beautiful, poignant, and soulful to driving and passionate filled with tension. Much like a great painting, novel, or even film, they not only tell a story but also take you along for the ride. On top of all this he has forged himself a unique guitar style that has a heritage in the great modern guitarists (Frisell, Abercrombie, Scofield, Holdsworth) the foundation of the older masters(Jim Hall, Joe Pass) yet is not afraid to move on. There are elements of many styles present, but in the same way that Jazz, Rock, Classical, Afro-Cuban, Calypso and Reggae all contain influences of other styles. In the end, this is not Jazz. It is not Rock. It is definitely not Fusion. It is rare that you find music that has the depth, complexity and nuance of established idioms yet simultaneously defies all current labels, Volpicella's music does just that.

This an outragous CD. It has many different styles in it. This guy really knows what he's doing. If you like jazz and especially good jazz, then it's worth the money to buy this album! Tim Volpicella did an excellent job on it! Great work Tim!!!

This is one of the greatest jazz albums I've heard for a long time. His guitar style is outstanding and very sweet. It has a lot of flavor added to it. Some parts are more mellow and others are packed full of hard-core jazz. I would HIGHLY recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys listening to a great jazz-guitar player.

          Album Description

"Adventures of Me and Me" is a largely acoustic set of recordings from an up and comer from Houston, Texas. Tabitha Monet uses her remarkable voice, accompanied by her acoustic guitar, to generate in the listener a myriad of human emotions inside the expanse of each individual song. The album's power exists in the artist's point of view, and formost, how she expresses it. Largely acoustic, it does contain a handful of gems with more extensive production, of which the particular standout is "Want It for Mine." The most impressive aspect of this album is that all music and lyrics are written, performed and produced by the artist. Similar artists are Shawn Colvin, Aimee Mann, Edie Brickell and Sara McLaughlin.

          Album Description

Only Now Existing's Debut Album, "Voodoo Doll" is already creating a buzz among critics and fans. In the tradition of Nine Inch Nails, Pink Floyd, and Radiohead, James Garrett has designed a concept album which blends different genres of music to create a melodic and emotional journey through themes of individuality, self-realization, and social conformity.

i just picked this CD up from a live show in NYC. This CD is incredible. In this age where new good music is being craved THIS cd will fill that void. Its something new for a change. Garret is set up to be the next biggest artist since NIN's trent reznor. Pick this CD up as soon as you can, you'll thank me.

          5 out of 5 stars O N E STANDS ALONE.......2005-06-28

In a time when there has been a significant line drawn between mindless pop culture and true artistry in the music world, O N E's "Voodoo Doll" shows up as a reminder that good music is still being made. You just have to know where to look for it.

O N E is an acronym for Only Now Existing. James Garrett is the singer and songwriter behind the experience that blends different genres of music. That being said, "Voodoo Doll" is an album that stands on its own. A good listener will be able to hear the artistic influences. The pounding bass and synthesized attack of Ministry and the melancholy twang of Radiohead pulsate throughout all eleven tracks. While Garrett does not copy them, he merely blends them with his own sensibilities and creates his own hybrid.

This is a dark work that lurks in the shadows of human existence. In "Blackout," we have a human being beaten to the edge of sanity by society. "Now there's nothing that will beat us, nothing left to fear." It's as if Garrett is starting at the bottom and regaining sight of what led him to the place he is in. He sets his targets and jumps into "Misled" which boasts an inspired rhythm and shows the true reality of television/media.

There is a sense of deep sadness in such songs as "Reflection" and "The Ruins of Interest." Garrett also releases an unquenchable anger in the pounding chorus of "Kill You Off" and follows it in two songs where he seems to be questioning his own actions. In "Fire," he sings "I tried to face the day/Hoping that all of my feelings would be washed away/...because I see myself in your face." From there, he leads into the rocker "My Dream," where one line in the chorus growls "A lie growing that started because of me." This seems to be more than a song, but a self-realization.

The whole album spans the cycle of human emotion as Garrett criticizes those who surround him. From where he starts in darkness, he ends up in the waking light of "All That Was." This album is a journey through the consciousness of a society and human life. It questions our fears and examines the possibilities of influence. And, like all true art, it causes a sense of question in the artist towards himself, his own weaknesses, and the strength that comes from realization.

This is an album that should cause people to question what they hear from our corporate media and our Fearless Leaders. It should also make you, the listener, take a look at yourself, someone that pop culture tries to make you forget. "Voodoo Doll" is a good album where anger and sadness are mixed throughout, but there is always a sense of redemption.

This is a stepping-stone to what Garrett has in store. Given the talent, the possibilities are endless. "Voodoo Doll" is easily accessible for all music listeners, but is more of a wake up call for those who are already awake. It is an album with meaning, something that is truly lacking in popular music today.
