Where so many duet projects seem like shotgun marriages, this one sounds like a labor of love, celebrating Southern music as a common denominator that transcends racial and categorical divides. Among the highlights, the pairing of Lyle Lovett and Al Green finds revelation within the funky groove of "Funny How Time Slips Away," while the album-closing "Patches"--with George Jones playing father to B.B. King's son--achieves a spine-tingling majesty. Though Natalie Cole and Reba McEntire misconnect on "Since I Fell for You," Sam Moore (of Sam & Dave) and the late Conway Twitty are at their soulful best on "Rainy Night in Georgia." --Don McLeese

5 out of 5 stars rainy night in Georgia..........2007-06-22

so I'm in Atlanta a few years back visiting old friends, it's a rainy night and we're kicking back. I see a video of Sam Moore/Conway Twitty singing a duet of RAINY NIGHT IN GEORGIA that touches my soul. The next day I run out and pick up this CD. It still is one of my favorite cds of all time. Rhythm and blues artists singing with county and western stars, sounds like one of those hit and miss concepts but this cd is all hits. Sadly, it was the last recording Conway Twitty ever made but what a pairing, the soulful Sam Moore and the gravel voiced Conway. Other favorites are WHEN SOMETHING IS WRONG WITH MY BABY, Patti LaBelle and Travis Tritt. THE WEIGHT, Staple Singers and Marty Stuart. AIN'T NOTHING LIKE THE REAL THING, Vince Gill and Gladsy Knight. A smashing fun rendition of SOMETHIN ELSE, Little Richard and Tanya Tucker. Great music!

I'd been looking for this but couldn't remember the name!! I kept looking and found it on Amazon. The music? Incredible!

5 out of 5 stars Rhythm+Country+Blues = AMERICAN Music!.......2007-06-04

It's all been said here, and quite well, too. But if you are - or know somebody - who was born in 1977 or later, tell them that this disc is a stone-MUST HAVE if one wishes to see how (what used to be known as) Rock and Roll originated. Oh...MY fave? Trisha/Aaron's "I Fall To Pieces." Patsy is smiling from above...

5 out of 5 stars RHYTHM COUNTRY & BLUES.......2006-11-06

THIS CD IS VERY GOOD LISTENING FOR ALL AGES, FEATURING THE MUSIC & VOICES OF MANY KNOWN ARTISTS.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-07-25

A friend loaned me a copy of this CD last week and I've been frantically searching for the name of it ever since so that I could buy my own copy and one for my folks. I'm glad I finally located it.
I don't know how I missed this when it came out but I'm glad someone found it for me. I'll be recommending it to all of my musically inclined friends.
My favorite cut is Rainy Night in Georgia; it is pure pleasure to listen to my old favorite Sam Moore. I'd lost track of Conway after he deserted Rock and Roll for Country but this song reminds me why I loved him when he sang "Make Believe" so many years ago. Travis Tritt and Patti LaBelle were made for each other, as were Al Green and Lyle Lovett. Aaron Neville is always a pleasure and Tanya Tucker and Little Richard are pure fun. Mavis Staples is always great when she sings "The Weight" and this version with Marty Stuart is no exception. These are my favorites but there isn't a bad song on the CD.
This is a "must have" for anyone who loves all forms of music.

This is probably the best collection of Richard Penniman's Specialty label songs you'd want on a CD. I would put him way up at the top as one of the great innovaters, originators, and exremely important influences in the history of rock'n'roll. So many people covered his songs over the years. From Elvis to the Beatles to even Pat Boone and Marty Robbins. This CD is a must-have for anyone who loves fun, danceable, and wild rock'n'roll. So get this CD and rock your socks off!
As a note, I also recommend seeking out reissues of his earlier music recorded roughly between 1951-1954.
A truly great pianist, songwriter, singer and arranger.

5 out of 5 stars Do you care about rock and roll?.......2007-01-04

Then pick this disc up, pronto! Cobbling together 25 of Little Richard's greatest recordings (including every track off of his amazing debut album, Here's Little Richard!), the Georgia Peach is a virtual blueprint for rock and roll: The songs are greasy, soulful, piano-pounding ravers, bursting at the seams with manic energy, and live wire mutant R&B. Little Richard is one of rock's first great showmen, a bristling bag of musical atom-bomb fury. His singing is wild and wooly, and he's got a lnack for sky-scraping falsettoes and roaring piano runs. But don't take my word for it: just listen to the insane classics that fill this disc: "Tutti Frutti" and "Good Golly Miss Molly" alone are enough to start a revolution, while "True Fine Mama" rolls and rocks with enough caveman abandon for three or four rock groups. Hey, why do you think Elvis Presley covered "Tutti Frutti" on his first album? The man knows how to rock!
If you even think you might have a chance of liking the concept of recorded sound, get this album NOW!

3 out of 5 stars All the great Little Richard selections are here, but..............2006-10-02

...Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On?

On paper it looks good, but, this recording sounds like a poor out-take. A simple case of one song too many. I really wish I had stopped after track 24; Whole Lotta Shakin... ends this wonderful collection on such a sour note. As for the sound quality, it's really good, but I'm wondering if there was some added reverb to many of the songs. I've never heard them sound like this before.

Finally, all the great songs are here, with a good running order, but why not add a few more seconds between songs, it all comes off a little too rushed. I found I was pushing the pause button a lot, just to take a breath. As I recall, the UK Beatles albums from 1963 to 1966 had a seven second break between songs. I loved it! It was like letting dust settle before being inundated with another song right away, it gave each song it's own spotlight.

Still, The Georgia Peach, is probably the best Little Richard greatest hits collection out there. The first 24 songs are worth the price!

Rhythm and noise duke it out for the listener's attention on Little Richard's classic Specialty records. The future reverend chants and screams his often surreal--they used to call it "nonsensical"--tales of life ("Tutti Frutti"), love ("Jenny Jenny"), and rock ("Ready Teddy") over pounding piano, thumping drums, and one of the greatest horn presences (both ensemble and solo) in the history of 20th-century music. this disc makes his case better than the written word ever could, though. --Rickey Wright

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Goes on too long but has some of his best.......2006-09-01

The compilation CD, The Essential Little Richard, documents the career of one of the founders of rock 'n' roll. Little Richard is known for his high impact, energetic performances of "Tutti Fruiti," "Good Golly, Miss Molly," and "Long Tall Sally." Among others, the Beatles covered "Long Tall Sally" in 1964. This CD has many of the songs Little Richard was best known for. Unfortunately, the album doesn't stop there.

Controversial from the start, Little Richard had a style no one has managed to imitate, although many have tried. He can't be parodied, since he was something of a parody himself. Either banging away at a piano or just jumping into the air as he sang, Little Richard was impossible not to stare at. With lyrics echoing words meaninglessly ("Slippin' and a-slidin', peepin' and a-hidin'"), messages could be forgotten. I saw Little Richard live when I was twenty, and watched him in amazement for forty-five minutes. Leaping during every line he sang, he spent more time in the air than on the ground. If you could turn him into a power source, you could run the Hoover Dam.

Little Richard emerges best in "The Girl Can't Help It," where a backup male chorus supports his vocals. But listening to 20 tracks by him in a row is like visiting a circus sideshow: fascinating but quickly wearing out its welcome. The CD would have been more effective at twelve tracks.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music.......2006-08-14

Since I will be attending a concert by Little Richard in October, I wanted to refresh my memory. The CD is great and brought back old memories from my junior high school years. A great CD.

4 out of 5 stars The Music Of My Feckless Youth..........2006-02-24

All of Little Richard's best-known tunes and a few lesser-known ones. His distinctive style can get a little tedious but tossing this disk into a multi-CD player with other 50's greats makes for a really great nostalgia-fest.

5 out of 5 stars A Rock And Roll Original.......2005-02-26

This is a fine collection of the songs Little Richard recorded for the Specialty label.
Back in the day, Little Richard scared the hell out of middle class white American parents but the kids knew what was good!
You've got Little Richard pounding away at his piano and singing in his own inimitable style, a great sax player who sounds like he might blow out a lung at any moment and a drummer who provides the steady rockin' beat to Richard's anarchic style of rock!
The last two cuts ("Baby Face" and "Silvery Moon") are pretty tame but the rest of this album is terrific.
The songs have been digitally remastered from the original tapes and sound great.
The only minus is a lack of decent liner notes.

5 out of 5 stars The hit songs for a reasonable price.......2004-06-17

This is a great little Richard sampler that covers his middle period, and some later period, these are msotly hits, and thier is a great interview with Little Richard at the end. This is pioneering r&b jump blues music. And all the songs are fun and wild, from the opening classic Lucille(with a horn section) to Hound Dog. You'll Love richards boogie woogie piano style and his screeching vocals(reminiscent almost of Ruth Brown at times!). Many of these songs are on the bluesy(or jump blues side). And msot of the tracks feature a big band bancking up Richard's boogie piano and vocals. GREAT CD!!!

Aaron Neville is one of the only singers alive with a voice soulful, strong, and emotionally pure enough to warrant comparisons to Sam Cooke--easy to understand upon hearing his new gospel-oriented collection, "Devotion." With an intensity you just don't hear enough of, he tackles some of the great songs of the genre, such as "Mary Don't You Weep" and "Banks of the River Jordan." Those songs share space with a few originals, as well as ingeniously sung covers of pop standards such as "I Shall Be Released," "Bridge over Troubled Water," and "Morning Has Broken"--all done in the stirring, tuneful way that only Aaron Neville can achieve. As is the case these days on almost any solo recording by a performer over the age of 20, there are guest stars: able-voiced brother Ivan is on here, while adult contemporary act Avalon and diva wannabe Rachel Lampa attempt, admirably, to hold their own with the great singer. Okay, it's gonna sound clichéd, but this record really is as rock solid as its message of faith. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Reconnecting to the gospel essence of Soul/ R&B.......2004-03-18

It seems Aaron Neville gets inside every song he sings on this album, cover or original composition, and sings of higher love. His utter artistic beauty and sincerity will hopefully break down any misgivings people who normally avoid music with religious themes may have. If Neville suppressed this personal expression of his faith for the sake of greater record sales, I believe this world would be poorer for it. Regardless of your beliefs, treat yourself to this beautiful testament of suffering, joy, faith and love.

5 out of 5 stars What a talent!.......2003-11-10

I originally bought this DVD-A disk for my Mom, who is very religious. I listened to it at her house and immediately knew I had to have a copy. I've always know what a unique and beautiful voice Neville has, but I'm not a huge fan of religious music (other than Christmas music). This is just great music. Period. Some songs are superb and some are merely very good. Not a single bad song in the bunch. The teriffic surround sound makes the album that much more enjoyable. Also check out the Neville DVD-A "Believe," it is just a good as this one, but with completely different songs. What a talented performer!

The lineup of this nationally televised concert, organized by Wynton Marsalis at Jazz at Lincoln Center, ranged from the gospel queen Shirley Caesar to the quiet wunderkind Norah Jones. But the night belonged to the Big Easy's brethren, including the crawfish cadences of Buckwheat Zydeco's "I'm Going to Love You Anyway" and the second line strut of Art and Aaron Neville's "Go to the Mardi Gras." Trumpeter Irvin Mayfield's tearful "Just a Closer Walk with Thee" was dedicated to his missing father. The Jordan family: flutist Kent, violinist Rachel, vocalist Stephanie, and trumpeter Marlon--who was trapped for days on a roof--performed a heartfelt, affirmative rendition of "Here's to Life." Without the Crescent City, American music as we know it does not exist. If enough of you buy this CD, we won't "Know What it Means To Miss New Orleans." --Eugene Holley, Jr.

5 out of 5 stars Your Purchase Benefits a Good Cause!.......2006-03-12

The description of this CD forgot to note this statement from Blue Note's website: "All net profits from the sale of the CD will be donated to the Higher Ground Relief Fund established by Jazz at Lincoln Center and administered through the Baton Rouge Area Foundation to benefit the musicians, music industry related enterprises and other individuals and entities from the areas in Greater New Orleans who were impacted by Hurricane Katrina and to provide other general hurricane relief."

5 out of 5 stars Another Katrina Relief CD.......2006-03-01

I also really enjoyed this CD from various artists. Anything I can do to help in little ways like this, I am more than happy to do. My heart goes out to everyone still in NO. This CD will be played every Mardi Gras season I am around and maybe even on the off-season, too!

5 out of 5 stars Remembering New Orleans.......2006-02-28

Anybody who loves New Orleans will love this CD. It has many of the hit songs associated with the city performed by stellar
artists and many new interpretations of old favorites as well.
Best of all, buying the CD allows money to go to Hurricane Katrina relief.

5 out of 5 stars top flight.......2006-01-27

ok---I haven't heard the whole cd yet, and I'm sorry to see that others who have reviewed it were disappointed that certain cuts were 'cut'. HOWEVER, I'm about to purchase this cd based solely upon the one cut I heard yesterday on our local music station WWOZ in New Orleans. What I heard was Irvin Mayfield's "Just a Closer Walk With Thee". It's INSANELY GOOD. Being from New Orleans, I've heard this tune done dozens of different ways...and I've heard Irvin Mayfield live dozens of times...but this is beyond amazing. At least try to hear this cut IN FULL. This is a 'turn off the lights and concentrate' sort of offering.

5 out of 5 stars Great Performances/Great Cause.......2006-01-16

You can't listen to this CD without Katrina's aftermath running through your mind. That doesn't make it a sad listening experience, just a very meaningful one beyond just the sounds coming through the speakers.
There's jazz, gospel, rhythm and blues... all the sounds that made New Orleans a music mecca. The performers are the best (Wynton Marsalis, Norah Jones, Aaron Neville, James Taylor, Buckwheat Zydeco and others).
Treat yourself to this stellar collection of artists/songs and do something to benefit New Orleans at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Moved from cassete to CD.......2007-02-19

After 10 years of babying the cassete of this album decided to look for a CD form. Glad to have found it! Disney needs to put out this album again. A real change from the nasty kids music out today. THE BEST KIDS ALBUM EVER!

5 out of 5 stars Best of the best.......2006-06-21

I got this tape for my daughter 15 years ago, and still remember her imitating Little Richard from her carseat! I am also an elementary classroom and music teacher, and found this to be the most enjoyable children's tape we owned. We never got tired of it; in fact, since ours disappeared, I'm ordering a new one as well as one for my newest nephew. I encourage any parent to get one of these while they're still around!

5 out of 5 stars Oldie but Goodie.......2004-10-16

I had this tape when my oldest daughter was born in '91. I wish it were still in print, so to speak. It was great having kids songs sung by contemporary artists who created fun recordings that didn't grate on your nerves after hours of listening to kids' songs. I now have a new baby & can't find my tape so want a new copy to keep us both entertained.

Aiming beyond style boundaries, trends, or geography, ACL promises an authentic music experience while delivering the highest standard of discovery and production. 4 out of 5 stars Makes you want to go!.......2006-04-18

Austin City Limits. For over 30 years, ACL has transcended style, age, and anything else that divides musicians (and their fans) to bring some of the best music around. I tend to be a bit musically schizophrenic, so I love the diversity that ACL brings. I looked forward to the CD, figuring I would be able to enjoy some old favorites and find some new 'must haves.' I wasn't disappointed.

The CD opens up with "Debaser" by the Pixies. I've never been much of a Pixies fan for whatever reason, but this was a pretty good selection (though I'm not sure I'd have started the CD off with it). Dashboard Confessional and Franz Ferdinand were both excellent. And the Blind Boys of Alabama doing "Walk In Jerusalem" (one of my alltime favorite spirituals) made the album for me.

A few bands I hadn't heard before were Los Lonely Boys, Calexico, and Drive-by Truckers. These bands reminded me why I love compilation CDs so much - you always find something new to listen to.

Every CD has its weak points, though, and this CD had a few. I wasn't impressed with Broken Social Scene - I found the vocals to be a little weak, but I chalk that up to my own musical taste. I'm also not a big Shelby Lynne fan. But the weak parts of the CD are more than made up for by the new discoveries I made.

They say that diversity is the spice of life. If that's the case, the Austin City Limits festival is a spicy dish indeed. And I like spicy.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the best names in the indie scene are here.......2005-11-15

This compilation live album captures snippets of the performance of some of today's best independent artists around. Opening with a comeback performance by Pixies, the album dashes by great deliveries from the likes of Josh Rouse, Montreal-based Broken Social Scene, My Morning Jacket and Ben Harper to name a few. Granted that the full price is a bit too much, you can always get one of the used copies offered here for less.

Overall, an excellent selection of music. My only issue with it (and most of these live compilations) is that they can only capture a tiny piece of the real thing, which is why I give it four stars.

3 out of 5 stars Too much heat in Austin..........2005-09-16

I'm glad that I can get to hear this music from the comfort of my air-conditioned living room, because I don't think I'd be as pleased as most attendees seem to be here, considering the size of the crowd and the high temperatures. Despite conditions that would send me reeling in search of the nearest air-conditioned tavern, the oversized crowd is apparently enjoying themselves, which makes sense as you listen to (or watch) these excerpts.
Diversity is the key here, with acts from virtually every corner of contemporary music contributing a song. Perhaps the best thing about this release is its diversity, because it allows the viewer to familiarize themselves with acts that otherwise might have been overlooked. Fans of the Pixies get a chance to hear My Morning Jacket (and vice-versa), while fans of Sheryl Crow get a gander at The Soundtrack of Our Lives (both on the DVD only).
The DVD is the better deal here, since it contains two disks, and contains eight performances not included on the CD release. Oddly, some of the best performances are edited from the CD, particularly the stellar performance of Soundtrack of Our Lives (perhaps the best of all included here) and Howie Day's odd `solo' performance with multiple tape-looped versions of himself as accompaniment.
Consistency is in short supply, though, and both the disk and the CD drag at times. Broken Social Scene's "Anthem for a 17 year-old Girl" is about as tedious as the title suggests. Los Lonely Boys make an attempt to channel the spirit of Stevie Ray Vaughan on a track called "Crazy Dream", but they end up falling far short of their mark. Better is the Old 97's, who get by just fine by sounding exactly like their smart-ass selves on "The New Kid", and Roseanne Cash, whose understated presence lends some grace to the disk with "Seven Year Ache." Unfortunately, though, 100-degree temperatures can suck the energy out of a person, and the languid, mid-tempo pace of many performances included here seems to reflect the heat in ways that might not translate, especially in the comfort of my regulated, 68-degree environment. All in all, the Austin City Limits Music Festival is impressive for attracting a wide variety of musicians, but its occasional lack of energy and continuity render it ultimately less than satisfying.
