The Sweetest Sounds
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Carla White is the epitome of a New York City jazz vocalist. Her cool contralto combines ebullient phrasing and impassioned delivery with a comprehensive knowledge of the jazz tradition. This recording, her seventh as a leader, teams her with a first-rate rhythm section: drummer Tom Rainey, bassist Dean Johnson, and pianist Peter Madsen. Highlighting well-known and obscure standards, White's bossa nova rendition of Lionel Hampton's "Midnight Sun" and her treatment of Duke Ellington's ballad "I Didn't Know About You" feature the grand tenor saxophonist Lew Tabackin. White's scat skills encompass the bop vocal legacy of Jon Hendricks on "This Can't Be Love" and the percussive percolations of Al Jarreau on "Day In, Day Out." Percussionist Steve Berrios provides the Latin tinge on Cole Porter's "Love for Sale," which features White's "rap" delivery of the lyric. Billy Strayhorn's moody "Ballad for the Very Tired and Very Sad Lotus Eaters" is reborn by White as "Bittersweet," with lyrics by Roger Schore, and is the highlight of this sweet-sounding CD. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Album Description
The jaunty Gene DePaul score for the musical play "Lil' Abner" based on the comic strip by Al Capp is heard instrumentally - and it's quite a show! "Broadway Bouquet" from 1965 is an important part of the famed Faith "string" album series - perhaps the pinnacle of his rich string sound that spanned gorgeous melodies and counterlines across sections of the large orchestra. (Bill Halvorsen)
Album Description
Pianist Percy Faith, a pioneer of the Easy Listening genre, had a successful and lengthy career as the in-house conductor and arranger for Columbia Records. Faith was renowned for his musical interpretations of Broadway and motion picture music. These two reissues from Collectables on 1 CD were originally released in 1965. 24 tracks. 2003.
Customer Reviews:
It's not stereo.......2005-01-10
I bought this solely for "Once Upon a Time", and was dismayed that the CD is mono, not stereo. The quality of the recordings leaves much to be desired, as many of them lack the pristine quality I'm used to on a CD.
classic arrangements by the classic gentlemen ~ Percy Faith.......2004-02-16
Two albums from the Columbia Records people blending different decades "Li'l Abner" (originally released CL 955 in 1956) and "Broadway Bouquet" (originally released LS 9156 in 1965), sharing the unmistakable style of the "Percy Faith Touch" ~ you know in an instant you're in for the best of the best ~ Duke Ellington was so taken with Faith's arrangements, that he would give anything to be able to arrange in that fashion.
Let's begin with "IT'S A TYPICAL DAY" along with "LOVE IN A HOME", both from "Li'l Abner", wonderful opening counterparts and the stirring arrangements by Maestro Percy Faith ~ "JUBILATON T. CORNPONE", uplifting cue that will keep bouncing in your head for hours, maybe even days ~ "IF I HAD MY DRUTHERS", one of the forgettable tunes from the show ~ "NAMELY YOU", has to be the best and favorite song of the Johnny Mercer and Gene De Paul score ~ by the way, these two composers penned the lively screen musical "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers", both scores were sure winners from two talented songwriters, Percy Faith steps up to the podium and takes it to another level.
Now with "Broadway Bouquet", we have perfection within the realm of lush arranging, so flawless "HELLO, DOLLY!" (Jerry Herman), "ONCE UPON A TIME" (Adams/Strouse), "SOMEWHERE" (Sondheim/Bernstein), "SUNRISE, SUNSET/FIDDLER ON THE ROOF" (Harnick/Bock) (one of my all-time favorites, can't get enough of this score), "WHO CAN I TURN TO (WHEN NOBODY NEEDS ME)" (Bricusse/Newley), "A QUIET THING" (Ebb/Kander), "MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY" (Comden/Green/Styne), "WHAT KIND OF FOOL AM I?" (Bricusse/Newley) (two of the best songwriters in the business), "LONG AGO" (David Heneker), "THE SWEETEST SOUNDS" (Richard Rodgers) (his credit of compositions goes through the ceiling, will never be another like 'em), "AS LONG AS HE NEEDS ME" (Lionel Bart) (a wonderful classic that is still popular by today's standards), "THEME FROM "GOLDEN BOY" (Adams Strouse) (another team of composers that have made an impact on the Broadway scene) ~ an example of the "Percy Faith Touch", so effortless, you feel like you're floating on a cloud ~ falls into Percy's many albums of fabulous string arrangements, they grabbed the attention of the listener and wouldn't let go. Can't think of any other arranger/composer who left such a great legacy as this man!
Highly recommend to ALL fans of Percy Faith ~ thanks to Collectables for releasing this collection from the vaults of Columbia Records ~ so listeners sit back, relax and enjoy a small part of Maestro Percy Faith's fabulous career!

O'Connell compilation is EVERYTHING you could want & more..........2004-01-04
WOW!!! All I can say is WOW!!! WOW!!! WOW!!! This is the best cd anyone has ever put out. These are rare radio transcriptions, and they are teh best recordings of her whole career. 1st of all O'Connell is featured here in jazz settings with several small intimate jazz combos, which allow Helen to relax, strethc out and sing some jazz!!! The AWESOME Page Cavanaugh Trio backs Helen up, for the best session of her career. Helen & Page should have recorded a whole lp, at least we have thsi gem of a CD. The only cd that pairs helen up with great jazz musicians including Shelley Manne!!! GREAT CD, The jazz side of HELEN!!! WOOHOO!!! THE BEST!!! WOW!!!
O'Connell compilation is disappointing.......2000-12-27
It's a shame there is so little of Helen O'Connell out there that one must settle for this CD to at least hear some of this singer's extraordinary talent. This CD, which runs less than 35 minutes, features O'Connell in three separate outings, 1953, 1961 and 1963. The best tracks are from her more recent recordings, where her unique vocal stylings shine. Her phrasing is sublime in Taking a Chance on Love and The Sweetest Sounds. But frustrating enough is that 7 of the 16 tracks clock in at less than 2 minutes as these recordings are taken of her radio performances. The sound quality is not first-rate either. The longest selection at 3:09 is O'Connell's hit, When The Sun Comes Out. Missing from this work is Star Eyes.
Helen O'Connell in various jazz settings...she's heavenly..........2000-04-17
A jazz vocal lovers dream come true... Helen O'Connell in a jazz setting. These sessions were taken from radio broadcasts from the 50's and 60's and the quality of the sound is great. Miss O'Connell is accompanied by various jazz quartets, trios, and quintents, including the Page Cavanaugh Trio. Here Helen improvises swings and sings sultry toch songs. This is a great example of a pop singer in a jazz setting, that really works, she actually becomes a jazz singer. HIGHGLY RECOMMEDED

Customer Reviews:
THE ONE AND ONLY BILLY MAY.......2002-10-26
The irascible Billy May, premire arranger and conductor for so many of the greats, and on his own, is presented here with two of his albums for Capitol on one great CD. May's popularity rose for his dance albums, and that got him on board at Capitol to do some arranging and conducting. A favorite of the likes of Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, needless to say those guys were no fools when it came to working with the best! His trademark lazy sax music and sharp brash arrangements for brass are probably the most recognizable of the era. But Billy wasn't all about swingin'; he could write a heartwarming slow ballad chart with equal ease (but somehow always found a way to get a brass blast in there somewhere!) The lusty undertones of WHERE DID WE GO? OUT! is one of the lesser known standouts on the GIRLS AND BOYS ON BROADWAY sides, which is worth the price of this CD just for the album cover (Billy May parading as a vendor selling chestnuts to the "cast kids"!) but there are other greats here, like Billy and the orchestra's reading of Frank Loesser's masterpiece GUYS AND DOLLS and the lovely TILL THERE WAS YOU from The Music Man, a tune Billy would later arrange for the great multi-octaved singer, John Gary with a similar chart.
While the NO STRINGS sides are, as my fellow reviewer mentions, not as exciting, they are still Billy May...and that means original and inventive, if nothing else! I love what is done with the charming LOOK NO FURTHER. The mood is perfectly captured and the slightest essence of swing is there (complete with the aforementioned "brass blast" on the bridge!) and the smart version of THE MAN WHO HAS EVERYTHING is also not to be missed. MAINE and LOVE MAKES THE WORLD GO are two more of Richard Rodgers' fine songs that make the NO STRINGS sides valuable. Great "two-fer" to have in your collection!
Broadway Big Band Style and without Strings.......2001-04-24
Billy May meets Broadway in this Big Band send-off of some of the Great White Way's classic selections. The first album on this CD twofer finds May conducting a rich brass section that raises the volume on Till There Was You and Heart. The second album, The Sweetest Swingin Sounds of 'No Strings,' is May's take on the Richard Rodgers 1962 musical "No Strings," in which Rodgers composed all tunes with only brass, reeds and percussions. On the downside, the show tunes tend to be overly arranged and May's blaring brass section seems to overwhelm most selections.
Superior arrangements & performance. Billy May at his best!.......1999-04-29
I purchased the 12" LP when it first appeared in the late fifties...the sound is
brass that bites along with Billy's slurping sax sounds. The stereo set-up has brass right reeds left and rhythm center. Capitol knew some stuff about recording big bands...and it shows. Absolutly superp! The second album from NO STRINGS does not come off as well, but buy for GIRLS & BOYS.
The first 12 tracks are a workout for your stereo system.

She was the best.......2006-04-03
This is a wonderful pair of albums, but my favorite has to be the inspirational songs. I first heard this particular album as a child, and have only the fondest of memories for it. She puts such power and emotion in these songs, they still give me goosebumps when I listen to them. Her rendition of How Great Thou Art should be considered the definitive one! The songs are all beautifully arranged and sung.
Kate is Great!.......2005-09-27
I remember hearing Kate Smith when I was a child and recall how much my father loved listening to her in the 1940's and '50's. My dad, now 98, still talks about her. I bought this CD for my dad, but after listening to Kate's tremendous voice and her redention of the classic favorites from her album "The Sweetest Sounds" and the inspirational and uplifting gospel songs from her "How Great Thou Art" album, I'm having to buy a second one to give to dad. I would recommend this CD to anyone who remembers Kate Smith with fondness, or anyone who appreciates great female focalists. The musical tract to all numbers on this CD are excellent. Kate was definately one of a kind.

I think its going to be good.......2002-03-31
I think this is going to be good if this is the brand new Oklahoma? I like partically all the songs except for Poor Jud is Daid and Lonely Room. I would go for the ballet but I really don't like that either. I like all the rest though.

Customer Reviews:
Wow, can we say off key?.......2006-06-13
Holy cow... I was just looking for new cds and found someone's recommendation for this one. I didn't buy it, but just heard the samples. I actually winced and had to turn it off, she was so flat. Her intonation is absolutely awful! (Meaning, she's really out of tune). I am a singer with a really good ear, and honestly, I can't listen to it... I feel bad saying that, but it's the truth.
Excellent Richard Rodgers tribute.......2004-10-09
KT, who comes from a large musical family, possesses a wonderful soprano voice that has enabled her to become one of America's finest cabaret singers. Originally from Oklahoma, KT is now based in New York.
On this album, KT focuses on the music of Richard Rodgers, who composed many classic songs, either with Oscar Hammerstein or Lorenz Hart. KT has avoided most of the really famous songs, choosing instead to revive less obvious songs. So you won't find You'll never walk alone, Some enchanted evening or It might as well be spring among the songs here, but you will find plenty of outstanding songs, all of which KT sings beautifully.
Perhaps the best know of the songs here is The gentleman is a dope, from the Broadway musical Allegro - the song was a top twenty American hit for Jo Stafford in 1947 but has been recorded by my fine singers since then. In contrast, there are some almost-forgotten songs like When you're dancing a waltz, which KT has paired in a waltz medley wit another rarely recorded song, Do I hear a waltz.
If you enjoy quality cabaret music, especially if you like the songs of Rodgers, Hart and Hammerstein, give KT a listen.

Vocal Goddess Not Constrained.......2000-12-13
Carla White newest release "Sweetest Sounds" is a wonderful compilation of ballads and originals where she is completely and vocally natural. Her original compositions actually seem as though they are written specifically for you while she is engrossed in a heartfelt conversation with only you. Carla has a deliberate and soothing quality to her voice that is unmatched by any vocalist in her deep dark throaty style. Her musicians are all equally as talented and collect themselves as a vey strong joined musical entity. Buy 1 for yourself and 1 for a friend.

These Are The Sweetest Sounds.......2000-07-21
Deborah's music is beautiful! Her performance of these classic songs is thoughtful and creative, especially "Come Saturday Morning" and "Everybody's Talking". Deborah's touch on the piano is at once powerful and soothing. My favorite song is her original composition "Carmel". If you close your eyes and listen you can feel the ocean breeze.
