At this point, who else but Tony Bennett would have the clout to round up stars on the scale of Elton John, Paul McCartney, Bono, Celine Dion and Barbra Streisand for some duets? (Note also that unlike some similar projects, all the parties involved on this CD were alive when it was recorded!) The material consists of relatively obvious classics in standard big-band arrangements, and Bennett himself is in top form at age 80, so much so that he doesn't need anybody else to handle "I Left My Heart in San Francisco." But the fun comes from checking out how his collaborators fare. The Dixie Chicks provide wonderful Andrews Sisters-type harmonies on the percolating version of "Lullaby of Broadway" that opens the festivities. The best songs tend to be the ones where Bennett's slightly craggy voice is juxtaposed to smooth female ones, like Diana Krall on "The Best Is Yet to Come," familiar accomplice k.d. lang on the sultry "Because of You" and Streisand-perhaps Bennett's only equal in stature at this pointon "Smile." Among the less expected guests, soulman John Legend is a revelation on the hard-swinging "Sing, You Sinners," while George Michael confirms he's quite the crooner on "How Do You Keep the Music Playing?" Elvis Costello, Celine Dion or Juanes don't sound as comfortable, and sometimes it feels as if they overdo it to compensate, but overall this collection is among the best of its kind, with most guests rising to the occasion. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

I would say "OK" but it is not of the quality of the Ray Charles' duets. Tony is fantastic but time diminshes the quality of the voice.

PBS ran the tape of the making of Duets and gave me a whole new perspective on the CD. I now can visualize each song as I listen, and it has enhanced my enjoyment of the best tracks while making ones I thought were not as good much more in line with the Bennett tradition of "telling the story" of each song. He gets inside the music and lives there with such ease.
There is nobody who can blend with Bennett's voice better than k.d. lang - except Diana Krull, James Taylor, Tim McGraw or, well, most of the other people chosen to sing with him.
This record is joyful and not enhanced, as one reviewer suggested. Hearing/seeing how Bennett works with lyrics and other performers still amazes me. I've been a fan since his first recording - there was nothing like a Bennett song for setting the mood.
Tolerable but falls short of its potential.......2007-06-19
As much as I wanted to rate this album higher, befitting Tony's legendary status, I couldn't because it suffers from "too many cooks in the kitchen." Like so many of these collaborations, some of the singers paired with Bennett work (McCartney, Michael, Streisand, John, and a surprisingly good Bono), some are adequate (Dion, Wonder, Joel, Juanes) and some fall into the "what-were-they-thinking" category (The Dixie Chicks, McGraw and John Legend).
And no matter how much respect I have for the legendary crooner, Bennett's voice is, expectedly, not what it used to be and on some songs, he strains and has wavy tones.
However, one can't deny his musical status and the fact that he was able to get so many top-notch talent to support is a testament to that fact.
And the choice of songs can't be denied; they are all bonafide "classics" in the truest sense of the term.

Even in the face of epochal success, it's tempting to ponder what Barbra Streisand might have accomplished had she not spread herself across so many diverse entertainment media; so much ambition, so little time. This collection of 19 Streisand duets chronicles collaborations with Frank Sinatra and Judy Garland at one end of the scale and Don Johnson at the other. It finds the singer dabbling--if, as her bluesy miscue with Ray Charles on "Crying Time" argues, not necessarily triumphing--in styles she largely eschewed elsewhere in her career. Still, her unlikely collaborations with Barry Gibb ("Guilty," "What Kind of Fool") and Donna Summer ("No More Tears (Enough Is Enough") during the disco era scored her some of the biggest successes of her career, ample proof that with the right chemistry, Streisand could be as powerful a pop music chameleon as she was a diva. New recordings with veteran Barry Manilow (the warm, low-key "I Won't Be the One to Let You Go") and Josh Groban (David Foster's overwrought "All I Know of Love") supplement recordings that stretch from the '60s kitsch-a-go-go of Harold Arlen's "Ding-Dong! I was so enthralled to hear the CD of Duets. I have always loved Barbra Streisands voice and this was just great. I enjoyed it enormously and listen to it all the time. Her choice of male singer was perfect.

Much of this is not the greatest Steisand, though Streisand almost always is a very great and moving singer. But certain moments here sent a chill down the spine. Hearing Judy Garland 's voice and then Streisand's was such a moment. Arguably the two greatest female ballad singers all time. There was another moment just hearing Sinatra and Streisand together though their collaboration on 'I've got a Crush on you' is far from what each is capable of. I remember the Barry Gibb collaboration and it still has its pleasantness. Her duet with Josh Groban is a nice piece. The opening riff of her duet with Ray Charles is a bit overdone. Barbara is an entertainer who gives it all but here it sounds as if she is schmaltzing it up a bit.
On the whole though her quality as a singer prevails here as it does in most of her work.

A tremendous commercial success upon its release in 1993, this collection pairs Sinatra with various big name vocalists on 13 of his best-known classics. Unfortunately, it's also one of the least enjoyable records of Sinatra's career. Part of the problem is Phil Ramone's obtrusively slick production, but the fact that Sinatra's partners sang along to tapes of his already-recorded performances--rather than with the Chairman himself--really keeps Duets from ever catching fire. Tony Bennett turns in a predictably swell "New York, New York," but duets with Gloria Estefan ("Come Rain or Come Shine"), Kenny G ("All the Way/One More for My Baby") and U2's Bono ("I've Got You Under My Skin") unfortunately represent something of an artistic low-point for Sinatra. --Dan Epstein

Not Sinatra's Best But Far From His Worst........2007-06-16
By 1993, Frank Sinatra was 77 years old. His voice was in tatters, his memory was failing regularly, and his health was deteriorating. And yet, he was still performing and seeling out houses around the world, playing to audiences young and old.
It was this appeal that led Sinatra to return to the studio at the request of his family and friends, and team up with the hottest artists of that era for an album of newly recorded duets of Sinatra classics. The result was simply titled "Duets".
"Duets" has polarized Sinatra fans since its release. Many fans love it and think of it as a great souvenier for Sinatra's later years. Others despsie it and see it as a joke to milk Sinatra's legacy. I am in the middle. I think "Duets" is flawed, but it's a very solid and enjoyable album.
The artists chosen here are indeed an eclectic bunch, ranging from R & B belters (Aretha Franklin, Luther Vandross) to modern day pop divas (Gloria Estefan, Natalie Cole, Carly Simon, Anita Baker), to a modern day rock icon (Bono), to a schlock king saxophonist (Kenny G), to two foreign crooners (Julio Iglesias, Charles Aznavour), an artsit I've never heard of and a select few who were in the same mold as Frank (Streisand, Tony Bennett, Liza Minelli).
With this group of artists, you are bound to get varied results when it comes to the songs. The fact of the matter is, some songs work and some don't.
The ones that work really well, and are fortunately the better part of the record. Streisand's performane with Frank on "I've Got A Crush On You" is irresistibly sweet and playful. Bennett on "New York, New York" is a dream come true, with the tow greatest singers in their field finally getting together on record. Minnelli was born to sing with Frank just like her mother, and the two swing out on "I've Got The World On A String". Anita Baker scores well on "Witchcraft", throwing in some nice scatting, and Carly Simon provides a good counter-vocal to Frank on an aching medley of "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry" and "In The Wee Small Hours Of The Morning". And while it looked like a bad idea on paper, Bono really blends in well on "I've Got You Under My Skin". Bono clealry respects Frank and does not try and upstage him and the two redefine cool with this track.
The bad is not terrible, but is lacking. Gloria Estefan comes across as too over the top on "Come Rain Or Come Shine", and Natalie Cole, who had attempted the same feat three years earlier with her dad on "Unforgettable", is surprsingly weak on "They Can't Take That Away From Me". Luther Vandross is one of my favorite R & B singers, but he fails to ignite sparks on "The Lady Is A Tramp". The duets with Iglesias ("Summer Wind") and Aznavour ("You Make Me Feel So Young"). The biggest disappointment perhaps is Aretha Franklin, who should've been a high point of the record, but she seems disconnected on "What Now My Love".
This leaves us with the last song on the album, which is by definition not a duet, and ironically manages to be the undisputed high point of the album. Kenny G. plays an instrumental version of "All The Way" (I was really hoping the older Frank would try his hand at this, but its' not to be). After tow minutes of Kenny's sax, the song quietly fades into "One For My Baby (And One More For The Road)". And the result is amazing. Frank gives the song all he's got, and the wear and tear of his voice gives the song a more poignant and heartbreaking feel to it. It's an incredible recording. I almost cried listening to it.
Overall, "Duets" isn't a masterpiece, but a solid effort from Frank in his final years. It is certainly worth having, even if not's quite a must have.
Dazzling Duets.......2007-05-29

Yes, definitely, I would love to be at his world forever and a day swooning over every note of his songs and be intoxicated with the beauty of his timeless music! His music is so many things to me. It's an inspiration! It's a joy! It's a dream in my heart! It evokes varied range of emotions. His music has made me happy and sad. His music has made me laugh and cry.
One of the notable quotes from Sinatra which I find very remarkable and sincere is: "I was a baby when I started in this business and without the guidance, friendship and talents of brilliant people like Nelson Riddle, Johnny Mercer, Jim Van Heusen, Harold Arlen, the Gershwins, Cy Coleman, Don Costa, Jule Styne, Gordon Jenkins, Sammy Cahn; the musicians I work with today, as well as my own determination, I would not have had a career."
The one thing I most admire with the Chairman apart from his many musical virtues is his deep sense of gratitude as evident on the above quote. He knew how to give credit when due. He was never an egoistic and self-centered person. He knew what a teamwork was all about. It was all about having great respect with people he had worked with and recognizing their combined efforts and great contributions to the ultimate success of his career.
"We all have so much admiration for this guy. As far as we are concerned, Frank Sinatra, is a national treasure." This is a quote from his Production Manager for so many years, Hank Cattaneo.
Indeed, he was not only a national treasure but also a legendary icon, most-loved Entertainer of All-Time. Why I have to listen to one or two Sinatra CDs everyday is beyond me! I could listen to all of his recordings day in and day out without tiring ever, and each time my heart simply melts! And this CD, "Duets" is no exception. This is one of the most wonderful CDs he recorded. What made it so special and notable is his pairing with some of the artists who have made great names for themselves and became famous for their tremendous talents. Each duet is executed beautifully and flawlessly making each performance sparkle and glow like a dazzling diamond.
My favorites include "They Can't Take That Away From Me'" with Natalie Cole, "Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry"/"In The Wee Small Hours of The Morning" with Carly Simon, "I've Got You Under My Skin" with Bono, "I've Got A Crush On You" with Barbra Streisand, "Witchcraft" with Anita Baker, "Come Rain or Come Shine" with Gloria Estefan and of course "New York, New York" with Tony Bennett.
David Wild has written the interesting and very informative Liner Notes with catchy sub-titles. I enjoyed reading it!

I reaquainted myself with this CD, and it is classic Sinatra. Everyone is wonderful. My teens have fallen in love with this CD.

Not good.......2006-11-15
As a Sinatra fan, I can tell you that this does not represent his best output. I hate to be cynical but part of me wonders if this album was prompted by a desire to squeeze just a bit more cash out of some tired old numbers. There was no point getting Sinatra to re-record a selection of favourites - he was too old and his voice had all but gone (let's face it). So why not get him to croak a few lines and then fill in the gaps with some lesser stars and then market it as a duets album?
The instrumental arrangements and the band itself are great. But the singing is at best uninteresting and at worst laughable. The duet with Bono is a complete joke, the one with Barbara Streisand tedious and uninspiring. In fact, just about the only one that is at all enjoyable is the duet of Summer Wind with Julio Iglesias. No, this is not a good album and the third-rate quality of it is highlighted by the rumour that Sinatra pre-recorded his bits and the others filled in the gaps later. I find that very easy to believe.
There are so many good Sinatra albums and collections around, so why would you bother with this offering? Go listen to him in his prime.
It's Pretty Good.......2006-07-11
Really, the condition of Frank's voice, and the fact that he pre-recorded his parts doesn't bother me. Of course, it would have been ideal if Frank had made his duets album ten years earlier.
This album had its flaws, but it didn't deserve the critical slam that it received at the time--and it didn't stop millions of people from loving it. It IS good, just not great. Duets II is actually better. The song choices are better, and Frank's voice was in better shape on those songs. I recomend both Duets 1 & 2.
I hope someday that they release Frank's recordings of these songs before the duet partners were added, I'd like to hear the original cuts.

This set is a good way to start listening to classical music. It's very well produced and easy to listen to. I purchased it to use as part of my world history high school class. It would have been nice to have some bio information on the composers. However, the product is exactly as advertised and good value for the money. The students were intrigued by how many of the excerpts they had heard before.
Some little gems there that I had forgotten!.......2007-03-30
Although I studied classical music at school, I had all but forgotten it until I bought this set. I heard several tracks I haven't heard for over 30 years, and I had been humming Brahms's 'Hungarian Dance no. 5' for years without ever knowing what it was and it was on the disc, so that was nice.
I found it to be a very good selection overall, but I felt too much had already been heard on TV, which of course is what lots of newcomers to classical music might appreciate. I managed to find about 2 hours of tracks that I wanted to keep, which works out quite expensive per disc, but I did find some wonderful music I had completely forgotten about, so it was worth it. All in all, it represents good value, and I have only knocked one star off as so much of it had been used in adverts.
It is definitely a good introduction to classical music, and it has made me want to listen to more of it, so I don't regret this 'expensive' purchase one bit!
Classical Masterpieces of the Millennium [20 CD Set]
A very helpful collection.......2007-03-24
I define this set as an excellent way to find out who you like, and who you don't, among 20 of the important composers. It opens the door to purchasing more complete pieces by composers you do like, and can save a lot of time and money in the process.
To criticize the set for not containing more composers, or more than just snippets of those who are in the set, is missing the point: it is a helpful introduction to finding your way in the huge maze of classical music. It succeeds admirably in this.
Sound quality is uniformly very good on an audiophile system.

A great way to start a classical music collection. It's nice to have a full CD of each composer. It makes it easy to keep track of selections/composers I already have and what composers I still need to puchase to complete my collection.

Encouraged by the massive sales of 1993's Duets, Capitol went back to the well a year later for a sequel. The pairings are a little more inspired this time around, with Willie Nelson ("A Foggy Day"), Lena Horne ("Embraceable You"), Chrissie Hynde ("Luck Be a Lady") and Antonio Carlos Jobim ("Fly Me to the Moon") all turning in satisfying performances. Unfortunately, there's also a heaping helping of forgettable cuts (including duets with Luis Miguel, Jimmy Buffett, Jon Secada, and Lorrie Morgan), and Phil Ramone's arrangements continue to grate. And the overwrought duet with Neil Diamond on "The House Live In (That's America to Me)" has to be heard to be believed. Hardly a necessary addition to your Sinatra collection. --Dan Epstein

My wife and mother in law had the opportunity to see Frank Sinatra a couple of times in NYC. He was great (I think my mother in law was a bobby socker). Very cool. The music selection is great and I had purchased this, and the first Duets CD for her because she really enjoys the music of Sinatra. He is the Chairman of the Board and worked hard at his craft to be the best. I highly recommend these albums to anyone who appreciates the big band sound and the melodic singing of Sinatra.

Own both Sinatra Duet CD's and have played them so much since they first came out I have had to purchase new copies. Love the variety and that they are CD's with artists that cover all ages, and generations. Something I think is lost on the negative critics. This was made at a time when Sinatra was aging well, and had teen age granddaughters. It was a CD set that alot of people had requested he do.
Duet the first CD has a great Sinatra pairing with U2's Bono and the song I've Got You Under My Skin' which is orgasmic in more ways than one. The duet with Barbra Steisand, 'I've Got A Crush On You', is lush even if I didn't care for the personalization of the lyrics. 'What Now My Love' with Aretha Franklin shows off her voice well, as does
In Duet 2 How Do You Keep The Music Playing?/My Funny Valentine with Lorrie Morgan is a favorite since its a real love song, and one I think of my late husband alot of when I listen to the CD. Chrissie Hynde 'Luck Be a Lady' shows off her sexy deep voice. Moonlight In Vermont with Linda Ronstadt is nice. Pattie LaBelle also shows off a voice that can hit some awesome high notes.
Its important to note that Sinatra and the artists did not record in the same studio at the same time but sang separate with the producers blending or mixing the lyrics. Much like Natalie Cole does so well when she does her 'duet' with her father on various songs.

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!
Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12
This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!
Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20
Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!
Frank's view.......2006-08-19
This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.
Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08
I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.
The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!
I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.
The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Whenever I listen to my original limited edition Duets & Duets II, I really feel good as the combo of both are a great musical trip with The Master and a cast of many magnificent duet partners...it doesn't matter that these wonderous duets were created in various studio locations around the country because it is all done so well and the listener can feel an affectionate connection with all of the great duet partners plus arrangements and production values are the best and vocal performances richly varied and generally brilliant! My only regret was that Duets III didn't happen as this type of greatness will never happen again and I would have loved a Barry Manilow duet as I know they were great fans of each other...Sinatra started his Manilow collection from the beginning. Standouts abound and naming a few "I've Got You Under My Skin" with Bono is incredible, "Come Fly With Me" with Luis Miguel a thrilling ride, "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered" with Patti LaBelle moving and spectacular, "Moonlight In Vermont" with Linda Ronstadt dreamy and romantic, "What Now My Love" with Aretha a vocal tour-de-force, a big-band jazzy treatment of "Fly Me To The Moon" with Jobim a complete classic, "Where Or When" with Steve and Eydie a very winning and classic trio, "Embraceable You" with Lena Horne moving and sentimental, "Luck Be A Lady" with Chrissie Hynde completely intoxicating, "For Once In My Life" a soulful and inspired paring with Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder, "How Do You Keep The Music Playing?/My Funny Valentine" with Lorrie Morgan torchy and soulful, "I've Got A Crush On You" with Barbra Streisand a glorious vocal blend, "I've Got The World On A String" with Liza Minnelli showcase two music legends in peak form and "All The Way/One For My Baby (And One More For The Road) with Kenny G is a haunting and masterful performance that stays with one long after it's over...this magnificent collection is a must have for anyone without these great collections with superb sound and classy packaging...Mr. Frank Sinatra we love and miss you and thank you for leaving behind this tremendous musical treasure for all of us life-long fans to savor and enjoy over and over again!!!

Why, why, WHY are Duets I & II being re-reissued for the third time? Of all the Sinatra CDs in the universe to add to your collection, these should be the last. For the same money you can buy 2 or 3 classic Capitol or Reprise albums that are among the finest records ever made. Many of these Sinatra performances would actually be worth hearing without the overdubbed "duets" by this strange cast of characters that only a marketing & PR committee could have ever dreamed up (Jimmy Buffet? Gloria Estefan? Luther Vandross? Bono????). In fact, "One For My Baby" is a beautiful, twilight reading tainted only by the thakfully minimal overdubbed soprano sax noodlings of the nauseating Kenny G. There are a few other near misses here: duets with Lorrie Morgan, Natalie Cole, Lena Horne, and Linda Ronstadt are okay... Still, this set will leave you cold and wanting to hear more of The Man and less of his phoned-in guests.
Once upon a time there was a "black-market" CD of Sinatra's vocals from these sessions without the overdubbed duets [titled "Solos"]. Too bad Capitol Records hasn't released those tracks as a "Limited Edition" instead of this set... or anything else for that matter: is this really all Captiol, Reprise, and "The Family" can come up with for a Sinatra "90th Birthday Collection" release? There are so many great unreleased live concerts, session outtakes, and video materials stagnating in the vaults... what a shame and what a joke...
Another Missed Opportunity.......2005-12-01
Say what you will about Sinatra's over-produced Duets and Duets II being the appropriate items to present as the "90th Birthday Limited Collecter's Edition" but once again the fans are milked for one more unreleased track. Sinatra and Willie Nelson duet on "My Way," but it's pretty obvious that as long as fans are willing to pay, we'll keep on getting the same-old rehashed tracks their way.
If you don't have this material already, this is probably the best place to get it, but if you're looking to celebrate Sinatra's 90th in a more fitting way, there are dozens of CD that are more worthy of your time.
