We'll Be Together Again
Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Lena Horne is nine years older than the 70-something Tony Bennett, and like him has lost a good bit of power and tone from her voice. Unlike Bennett, though, she doesn't try to bull her way through her vocal limits on We'll Be Together Again; she stays within those limits and fashions a striking testament to the subtleties of romance and friendship in one's autumnal years. Billy Strayhorn was one of Horne's very best off-stage friends, and seven of the 16 tracks here were written by Strayhorn and/or his partner Duke Ellington. Three more songs--"My Buddy," "Old Friend" and the title tune--are heartfelt remembrances of those once dearest to Horne and now gone--Strayhorn, her ex-husband, her son, her hairdresser and her wardrobe mistress. --Geoffrey Himes --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

Customer Reviews:
Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Product Description
The process of recording this CD has taken us, Trio and Orchestra alike, in some exciting new directions, allowing each of us to explore many new approaches to style and performance. As co-producers of the recording sessions in Nashville this summer, Jake Fleming and I were confronted with many new challenges, and we each learned a great deal about large-ensemble recording. The String Orchestra rose to the occasion with distinction, quickly apprehending jazz idioms, the peculiarities of multitrack recording (headphones, multiple takes), and a very demanding recording schedule (long days, Nashville take-out). I'm proud to say that we even challenged our erstwhile recording engineer, who shortly after our arrival declaimed, "Uh, I don't think that we've ever had this many musicians in the big room before..." With four different arrangers for the project, we knew that we'd have a diverse, exciting mix of styles from song to song. Eric Funk's work is always very distinctive. An established American composer, he brings his own unique language to his arrangements, finding new ways to communicate the sentiment of a classic tune. Glen Johnston's technical finesse is unmatched, his style very much part of a living tradition of large-ensemble jazz arranging that goes back to the days of the big bands and elegant ballrooms. Jake Fleming's imaginative orchestrations are a riot of color and texture, and my own style of jazz arranging seems to be a happy marriage of Broadway drama and good old hochdeutsch counterpoint. With great arrangements, a fabulous orchestra, and the incomparable Craig Hall and Brad Edwards filling out the rhythm section, we all knew we were going to have something special. And we did. We'll Be Together Again is an album which has brought together many professional Montana musicians from markedly different stylistic backgrounds, many of whom had not previously worked together. For Jeni, Jake and I, it has been a wonderful opportunity to bring together some of our most important mentors and teachers. Johan Jonsson, Eric Funk, Glen Johnston, Craig Hall, Ralph Sappington (playing trumpet tonight) and Brad Edwards have all helped the three of us to mature as performing musicians; it has been a great honor to have them all with us on this album and concert tour.

Lots of pleasant stuff, but not at the top........2003-07-10
Joe Pass and Niels-Henning Orsted Pedersen set an incredibly high standard with their duo and trio recordings, and so its hard not to hear this album in light of those and to find it significantly thinner. The tunes are all quite good, but I found nothing spectacular on it, which surprised me since I like J.J. Johnson a great deal. It's still a fine jazz album though, with a nice selection of tunes. The guitar/trombone combination is also a nice sound in its own right, and I like to listen to it just to hear the tone.
Not on this Side of Armageddon, but..........2002-03-02
Wonderful versions of standards (one original by J.J.) in an unusual duo setting. I particularly enjoyed Blue Bossa and though a huge fan of Joe Pass, I am going to steal parts of J.J.'s solo and not Joe's when I play this song. This album is "good fun" and I like the concept of a Trombone comping.
strike three and it's a home run!.......2001-11-04
I loved the soothing/relaxing quality of selection 1 and the great upbeat selections 5 and 9. I also liked 4 and 10. J. J. Johnson is my favorite trombonist, this is my 2nd favorite CD album and I wish that Andre Previn/J.J.'s Mack the Knife were available on CD here at amazon.

Absolutely nice 40 minutes of two tenor saxophones..........2004-03-17
I thought about picking up this CD for a few months before I gave in and made the deal. I had heard some Sonny Stitt years ago, and liked it. I had heard about Gene "Jug" Ammons, but not heard him playing. I knew this was recorded back in 1961 by two friends who began in the bands of the 1940's and joined up off and on throughout the '50's. Since I've never had a disc reissued by "Original Jazz Classics" that I didn't like, I felt it was worth taking a chance. Glad I did. This is wonderful. "Red Sails in the Sunset" has always been one of my favorite tunes, and to my surprise, it is not extensively covered by '50's jazz groups. Gene and Sonny treat the song right for 4:20 to kick off "We'll Be Together Again." Another of my all-time faves, "But Not For Me" is next. Other standards include "My Foolish Heart" and "Autumn Leaves." While the album is mostly uptempo, the few ballads are lovely, too. The rhythm section of piano, bass and drums is subordinate on this project, but more than competent. Sonny switches to alto for two songs. The whole thing is just plain good, and is worth playing two or three times in a row, if you, like the concluding song title, have "Time on My Hands." Listen to the Amazon samples. Any person who likes classic jazz sax would enjoy this disc. This music is accessible and melodic, yet so much more adventurous than "smooth jazz."

Customer Reviews:
Haunting and achingly beautiful.......2002-10-04
The liner notes contain excerpts from fan letters to Martino, each of which describe this release as either their favorite Martino record in particular, or one of the great jazz guitar albums in general - and seeking the reissue on CD. It is not difficult to understand their feelings. The album contains (primarily) haunting, and achingly beautiful, ballads. The duets with Goldstein are surely to be compared with the classic Evans/Hall pairings. But unlike the equal roles Evans/Hall play with each other, this is Martino's show, with Goldstein playing a supportive role, using his keyboards for texture and color. Mancini's "Dreamsville" has never been played more effectively, and J.J. Johnson's "Lament" is a true example of the song's title. A jazz classic, in every sense of the word. Indispensable.
Stunning, Lyrical, Brilliant.......1999-07-19
Similar to the classic Jim Hall/Bill Evans duets, "We'll Be Together Again" is achingly beautiful. Martino's ballad work on "Send in the Clowns" leaves one breathless in terms of its strong emotional import and cerebral punch. With Gil Goldstein's flawless support, this record could have been called "Empathy" due to the player's almost psychic rapport. A stunning collection of ballads, highly recommended. "We'll Be Together Again," could well be the jewell in Martino's brilliant discography.
