5 out of 5 stars One of the best guitar albums ever.......2005-12-14

This album focuses on two of the greatest guitarists, who you can easily hear their different styles on this recording.

The production and material is brilliant as well.

Once you could find this recording on a two for one cd, with the other recording they did called Guitar Monsters.

Les Paul supposively showed up with a cold and the performance is not as good. There is more joking around as well.

Never the less, if that recording, buy it. Else, purchase this recording.

By the way, why does Amazon include a 'NO' in 'was this review helpful to you?'. People are only human and don't like opinions that differ from themselves. With some who are less mature, this the 'NO' makes it too easy express such displeasure.

Are they trying to discourage negative reviews, hence not purchase the CD. Such reviews only help a person in not being dissatisfied a product that received positive reviews

5 out of 5 stars Classic meeting of the Greatest!.......2005-07-21

If you don't get any other Chet and/or Les album/CD's, get this one.
It's a wonderful chance to hear two of the greatest electric guitarists together. The vastly different styles of these two are a perfect blend, and the meeting of two old pros is classic. It's a lot of fun and great music.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Shagadelic baby.......2000-01-01

A most excellent listening experience. Two different and distinct styles that when combined with the proper amount of Budweiser creates a most shagariffic time.

5 out of 5 stars Entertainment at its best, for the players and listeners........1999-04-29

Chet Atkins reminds me of my father who used to play every evening in the living room after dinner. He'd listen to this album, get a good laugh, and start playing Caravan or Avalon. I have not seen my father for 20 years now but this record reminds me of those days. Days when I'd rather watch TV instead of listen to dad's picking. Days when country music was definitely not for a 10- or 11-year old growing up in southern California. Now that I have kids with whom I'd like to spend more of my time with, I realize the plain simple fun that my father was trying to have. He wasn't professional, but when he played with friends or relatives, it sounded like the fun Chet and Les are having on this album. I'd really like to dedicate this review to my father who lives somewhere in the US. We've lost contact for the last 20-some years, but I know he's listening to the analog version of this album very often. It was his favorite and now I know why.

5 out of 5 stars This is why those Brits picked up their axes!.......1998-07-12

The playful joy found in the interplay between These two masters of the guitar make you wish this record wouldn't stop! Part of the fun comes from the between songs banter between the "boys" left in tact. My only wish is that it was longer. Just can't get enough of these two together.

Two generations of guitarists merge on this cleverly-titled album, with former Dire Straits virtuoso Mark Knopfler taking time off from scoring movies to join Chet Atkins, one of the fathers of electric guitar pickin'. And there's some mighty fine country pickin' on display here, with the duo joined by some of Nashville's all-time finest players, including the late, great Floyd Cramer, Mark O'Connor, Larry Londin, Vince Gill, and Steve Wariner. The material ranges from choice country covers (Doc Watson's "Poor Boy Blues," Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams") to rock 'n' roll ("Yakety Ax," a take on Boots Randolph's "Yakety Sax"), jazz (Django Reinhardt's "Tears"), a Knopfler original, and even the old standard "I'll See You in My Dreams." It sounds like they had fun, too! --Bill Holdship

Listen to two masters weave their magic in this CD. I particularly enjoyed their banter as they play the 5+ minute "There'll Be Some Changes Made".

This is a wonderful blend of rock and country. It's nice to celebrate the life od Chet specially with Mark.
Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Review???.......2006-07-22

I have thoroughly enjoyed listening to this CD. Haven't had a great deal to do with the mucic of Chet Atkins before, but certainly knew of him.
The music is easy to listen to and sing along with once you know the words - if you listen to it often enough, and I seem to be doing just that.
Am glad I made the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Two Pros.......2006-07-04

I love this collection of two great guitar guys!! All songs are grand.

5 out of 5 stars I want my Chet/Mark TEEVEE!.......2006-03-03

Too often great guitar players have little (or nothing) to say. This can cause uneven lyrics in their work. That is certainly not the case here. Buy this not for the great guitar playing and mutual talent and admiration, buy it for the lyrics. The guitar playing is your bonus for your excellent taste. Most of this is (much) lighter than other Mark Knopfler offerings the rich descriptions are still here with a well ensconced tongue-in-cheek. I was just as happy to pay for it as they both (obviously) were to create it. I want my Chet/Mark TEEVEE!

5 out of 5 stars My uncle loved it.......2007-05-14

A very accessible record that my uncle, an avid Chet Atkins fan, loved when he recieved it as a "new car" present (bye-bye cassette tapes).

5 out of 5 stars Smooth, smooth and sweet.......2006-11-10

This is a fine collection of Chet's work. With a little help from Dolly Parton, Les Paul and Jerry Reed. Chet rated himself worlds 5th best guitar player. After hearing this CD you'll shake your head and wonder, "who could have done better?"

5 out of 5 stars The Eddie Van Halen of His Day...and Today.......2004-10-06

If you're not familiar with Chet Atkins, this disc, more than any other compilation, is the best place to start. It's a superb collection of Chet's "Golden Era" recordings that never gets bogged down with inaccessible pieces or repetition. You'll hear exactly why this man came to define the idea of what a "guitar player" was in the 50's and 60's. Phenomenal playing that sounds so effortless and simple that when you listen closely to what the man is doing, you'll swear to yourself it's more than just Chet making all that music.
Listening to this disc, there is little doubt that Chet was the Eddie Van Halen of his day. Of course there were other masters who were active at the time and Chet wasn't the only one playing in this style; there was Merle Travis. But not even the latter virtuoso played with the finesse that Atkins did. Chet played with more grace than anyone. Heck, even Django didn't play Djangoesque arpeggios as smooth as Chet. His technique was as fluid as flowing water, unrivaled, even today.
Keeping Chet's prowess as a player in mind, it becomes all the more incredible how his immense technical proficiency could coexist with complete accessibility. These two things are usually mutually exclusive with instrumentalists, but not here. This is a record that you can listen to front to back with no sags, lulls, dull spots or self-indulgence. It is superbly compiled and the disc never ventures into the realm of "for guitarists only." Although, if you're into that sort of thing, it's in here; it's just not right up front. And, for me, that's what makes Chet's talent so unique. He somehow
managed to make baffling technical mastery palatable to everybody. In Chet's world, the song comes first, which means the picking never gets in the way. He's not a showoff; the technique is there, but it's often hidden in the melodies, so you have to to do a little work to uncover it. That's why, although this is some very complicated stuff, you can still tap your foot to it. Brilliant.
All the songs on this disc are great and there are no throwaways or fillers. In particular, the duet with Dolly Parton, "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" is out of this world. I don't know how much the two of them recorded together, but RCA would be wise to issue all of it, as soon as possible. The love between these two musicians literally jumps out of the speakers and you can't help but to be seduced by their interplay. They sound like they're having a ball and it's really something.
This disc is perfect. Although I own plenty other Chet Atkins cd's I find that this one makes it's way into the player most often. If you like it what you hear on this disc and want more, try the double cd "Guitar Legend." There will be some repeats, but that disc is essentially a more thorough version of this one and there's enough difference that the overlap isn't an issue. Or if you're looking to jump into the "deep catalog," try "Guitar Country/More of That Guitar Country." You can't go wrong either way.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Collection of Famous Work.......2003-04-17

As a thumbpicker of guitar, I really enjoy this album. The amazing guitar speed and clarity shown in "Main Street Breakdown" and "Cascade" are great examples. This album collects a nice balance of sweet sounding music and guitar playing across a range of years from which they were recorded.

5 out of 5 stars The one and only.......2003-02-18

I have several CHet Atkins albums, as I am a guitarist with eclectic tastes and love his style. If I were to own only one Chet Atkins album this would probably be the one. It showcases his wide range of style and virtusity from black mountain rag to the charming ballad duet with Dolly Parton to yakety axe. Its fun, it moves along, there are a wide variety of selections and it is well engineered. In a day when fewer people know about Chet this a a great way to understand how this man came to influence an entire music industry and style, was able to do so by his instrumnetal virtuosity, yet appealed to everyman. Buy it youll love it.

Chet Baker was at the height of his popularity, the epitome of cool jazz, when these tracks were recorded for Pacific Jazz between 1952 and 1954. While Baker could hold his own in bop settings, the emphasis in this collection is squarely on his lyrical approach to ballads, whether singing or playing trumpet, with just a rhythm section or an added string orchestra. His vocals were absolutely distinctive, sung in a high-pitched, even fragile voice seemingly drained of emotion and yet possessing an inherent charm, a detachment that might be both the antithesis of style and its definition, whether it's heard as sensitivity or indifference. The singing is a double of his trumpet playing here, spare and barely present but achieving much through nuance and suggestion. Pianist Russ Freeman is an almost constant partner, supplying deft chords and harmonic daring, amplifying Baker's ideas. Their empathy is especially evident in the beautiful instrumental "Moon Love," but it's just as significant on signature Baker songs such as "My Funny Valentine," "Let's Get Lost," and "Like Someone in Love." --Stuart Broomer

Dreadful shame this man died so young. So much talent both singing and playing the trumpet. A smooth, easy listening cd. Highly recommended

5 out of 5 stars Sweet and Sultry and Simply Spectacular!.......2007-01-05

This music is perfect for a rainy day curled up on the couch by the fire with your significant other by your side. It's a shame they don't make music like this anymore. My favorite of all Chet's albums and one of my all-time favorites period. His rendition of "My Funny Valentine" is my personal favorite (even trumping Sinatra's wonderful version). There is not one song that disappoints, the whole CD is an absolute treasure. The man knew his limitations as a singer, and although he wasn't blessed with a voice like 'Ol Blue Eyes' or Johnny Hartman it's the raw emotion that he puts into the songs and the way he is able to phrase them (ala Billie Holiday) that makes it so special. Also his trumpet playing is absolutely superb as usual. One of the most romantic albums you will ever hear! I promise you will not be disappointed. Now go out and buy it now and play it on that special date with the woman (or man) of your dreams.

Once Chet Baker arrived in California from his native Oklahoma, his career exploded. After landing gigs with Charlie Parker and Gerry Mulligan, Baker soon found himself a solo star and bandleader. Not long after that, he also found himself whispering love songs into a microphone. Baker was not gifted with the most robust voice of the day. Indeed, listening to pure singers like Nat "King" Cole or Johnny Hartman can expose Baker's weaknesses, but what Baker did, he did well. By choosing wistful, so-young, so-in-love tunes, Baker was able to pour his heart into the material, sketching soft, romantic moods and painting himself as the broken-hearted innocent. The effect can be devastating, as Baker's voice clings to the melody, threatening to disintegrate at any moment. Many of his best tunes--"I Fall in Love Too Easily," "But Not for Me," "Let's Get Lost"--are collected here, and as such, there is no better place to begin an appreciation of Baker's unique singing. --S. Duda

    5 out of 5 stars WhAt'S "TeChNiCaL StAnDpOiNt"? .......2006-11-09

Technical standpoint? Is that how you listen to music? Sorry. I have no idea as to "technical standpoint". The music makes me feel alive and it makes me feel good, as a bohemian should. Chet baker has over 60 albums and has remained popular for over 50 years. I doubt if anything "heard in local clubs" will ever leave a legacy close to Mr. Baker's. An acquired taste? I was hooked in the first thirty seconds of the first Chet Baker song I ever heard and I've yet to hear anything he has done to change my mind. Most folks I know that like Chet Baker feel the same. Stop thinking and listen, this music is life at its best.

5 out of 5 stars The place to start, and to come back to.......2006-08-06

Over years of listening to jazz, this is the album I most often return to. It has absolutely everything: great songs (some of the greatest). A spectacular voice unlike Frank's or Ella's or Sarah's or anyone's--a voice that's all things to all people. (Whatever you want to hear in Baker's voice--depth, surface, warmth, detachment, male, female, and just about any other pairing of opposites--is right there for the taking.) You get ballads and lilting uptempos. Accessibility (this is not music to struggle to enjoy.) Innocence and experience. Summer-afternoon arrangements to float you away. A brilliant trumpet soloist (who was, however unlikely, the same guy as the amazing vocalist). Melody and improvisation.... If I were introducing a newbie to jazz, this is the album I'd start with. Then, after you listen to a thousand others, play Chet singing again and realize: this one tops them all. How did Baker do it? He probably shouldn't have been able to, given the way he lived lived--and that too feels like a piece of this recording's pleasure.

    5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-07-06

excellent performances by chet baker. his voice is unique and is highly recommended to all jazz lovers. It is so rare to find so many songs by chet baker in one collection and here are some wonderful songsby a wonderful jaxx singer and player.

    3 out of 5 stars Acquired Taste.......2006-03-26

People are a bit too crazy with all the 5 star reviews. From a technical standpoint, he is a pretty poor vocalist. Most of the jazz vocals I have heard in local clubs are better than Chet and as for more widely known, recorded artists, they all leave Chet in the dust. Of course, technical skill is not the whole thing. Certain vocalists have a way of singing that resonates with some people. Chet is one of those kinds of singers. It is certainly possible to love his singing, but for many people, it would be an acquired taste. For those who really put a lot of emphasis on technical skills, it is unlikely that they will ever be able to deal with Chet the singer.

Gerry Mulligan's off-the-bandstand relationship with Chet Baker could never be considered amiable, but once the two West Coast bad boys picked up the horns, everything was sweetness and light, though often underscored by a subtle and sweet tension. That's never been more apparent than on The Original Quartet with Chet Baker, a limited- edition, two-CD set (42 tracks!) that compiles the group's entire Pacific Jazz output (with the exception of their collaborations with Lee Konitz, available on Konitz Meets Mulligan. As the band that defined the swinging and sophisto West Coast sound, these Mulligan/Baker sides are laid-back but also sly and cerebral. While the rhythm section (bassists include Red Mitchell, Joe Mondragon, Bob Whitlock, and Carson Smith; drums were brushed by Chico Hamilton and Larry Bunker) lays back and affords the horns plenty of room, Baker and Mulligan circle each other like boxers one moment, lovers the next. It's a dance you don't want to miss. --S. Duda

    Album Description

The pianoless Gerry Mulligan Quartet, which launched the careers of Mulligan, Chet Baker and Chico Hamilton, lasted only one year (June of '52-'53). These two remastered CDs cover all 42 tracks that the quartet recorded for Pacific Jazz in that one year in which the band invented itself, evolved, hit the big time and then disappeared. Recorded live at the Haig and in various studios, this music is essential modern jazz.

5 out of 5 stars A Cornerstone of Modern Jazz.......2006-05-31

The quartet that baritone saxophonist Gerry Mulligan formed with trumpeter Chet Baker in Los Angeles in 1952 enjoyed considerable popular success during its single year of existence; but as this complete collection of the band's Pacific Jazz sides proves, flash in this case had a solid grounding in substance. The simple - if decidedly unorthodox - decision not to employ a piano, thereby eliminating his harmonic center, pushed Mulligan to the very forefront of jazz's postwar development, and resulted in some of the most sparkling and tuneful performances in the history of the genre.
Starting with the leader's very first (pre-Baker) California recordings, GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET traces the rapid evolution of this gifted group's sound, sensibility and personnel (An early version of the unit included a pianist but no drummer!), allowing listeners to share in the excitement these young men must have felt as they recorded three-minute masterpieces like "Lullaby of the Leaves" and "Soft Shoe" - pivotal works which sound as fresh, and dare I say it as important, today as they ever could have in their own era. Oft-covered warhorses "Makin' Whoopee," "My Old Flame" and "Darn that Dream" get spectacular makeovers here - the last in two different versions from which I defy anyone to pick a favorite. The live sets which made Mulligan's and Baker's reputations are well represented too, with bouncers like "Poinciana" balanced by such moody classics as "My Funny Valentine" and Mulligan's own "Funhouse." It's all here.
...Well, almost all. Those duly enchanted by this generous collection should seek out OJC's GERRY MULLIGAN QUARTET/CHUBBY JACKSON BIG BAND disc, REUNION and KONITZ MEETS MULLIGAN for more of these major musicians' efforts; all are well worth it.

    5 out of 5 stars Stunningly good.......2005-08-24

I wasn't very familiar with either Gerry Mulligan or Chet Baker when I bought this CD. Jazz is a relatively new interest for me, and I'm still feeling my way around. The overwhelmingly positive reviews sold me, though, and I decided to pick this one up. I'm *so* glad I did.

It's always a pleasure to hear such talented instrumentalists working together, but this CD takes it to another level entirely. You can almost feel the energy crackling between Mulligan and Baker when they play off each other's riffs. It's just amazing stuff. Whenever I play these CDs, I end up playing them a second time, and a third, and a fourth.

Get this set. You will not be disappointed.

    5 out of 5 stars Absolute beauty.......2005-03-07

I don't know if I should even attempt to compose a review for this release. I'm not certain I could even approach anything resembling "justice" for it. I'm sure I'll fall far short. But, that aside, here goes.

This cd, as my title indicates, is absolutely beautiful. To start, I would recommend getting this cd along with "Chet with Russ Freeman" and the Chet Baker/Art Pepper release that was once known as "Playboys" when on Capitol Records that is now called "Picture of Heath" in it's reissued form. These three releases combined make for a great combination/trilogy.

That said, this cd is fantastic. It captures Chet, and Mulligan, in their infancy, right on the cusp of what was to come. You can still hear the naivete in Chet's playing and while it's not as great as his "Chet" cd (which is absolutely, hands-down, my all-time favorite), it is just as magical. Just in a different way. This is the absolute epitome of the "West Coast Vibe." And, now, for me living here in Miami Beach and having left my home of San Francisco (where I lived for over 25 years), it brings back many, many memories of being very young, slaving away at menial jobs to go spend all my money at record stores to pick up jazz lp's (yes, lp's). All my minimum wage earnings went to Chet, Pepper, Getz, Garland, Mitchell, Adderly, Miles, MJQ, Monk, Webster, Hawkins, Milt, etc, etc, etc. Then, I'd take them home, cherish them, make mix tapes, and then hit the PCH or the city streets in my Ford Falcon with this as my company.

That's the truth. A bit of a diversion from a "review" of this cd, but it kind of, kind of, catches a vibe about this cd that, if you can at all dig what I'm saying (and hopefully, if you're checking out this release anyway - you're a soul I can relate to and CAN catch my drift), then you can get this vibe. But, if you know anything about this scene, then you know what I mean anyway. This is fluid, soul-touching stuff. If it needs any explanation, chances are there isn't anyone who can really explain it to you, nor anyone who would want to, and this is probably something you'd never get. But, it probably won't need explaining. You get this, you put it in, you close your eyes, you'll know. Top down, sunny day or rain on window pane with your heart full of sadness. Oddly, it fits both 'cause I've tried it. But just do yourself a favor and pick this baby up, along with the others I mentioned. You will be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Baritone Sax and Baker Horn.......2001-02-06

It does not take many words to tell you that these 2 CD's have the great and unique deep baritone sax along with that smooth horn of Chet Baker to make a winning combo. Buy it. You'll like it. You'll love it. There's some pretty nifty drum work on some tracks as well.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Jazz.......2000-03-01

This set is the best I have ever heard from Gerry Mulligan or Chet Baker. They started as musicians just trying to make names for themselves, and they definitely succeeded. If you are looking for a lot of well-known tunes, I have to warn you, these CD's don't have a whole lot. It makes up with style and great harmonies and melodies. Whether it's Mulligan blowing out his great sound into genius solos or Baker playing a melody with Mulligan on a harmony or countermelody, these CD's don't have any bad songs. The rhythym sections change throughout the album, as do the years they're from, but the purity of the cool jazz stays the same. I would highly recommend this to any fans of Mulligan, Baker, cool jazz, or to any jazz listeners who want to hear a wonderful collaboration between two great musicians.

Good response time on the mailing. CD was new and in top shape.

3 out of 5 stars unison is not for masters.......2007-01-11

Both these performers are masters of their style. As such, they should alternate, as in Duel, not try to synchronize. Their individuality gets lost and the personal subtlety makes the music "muddy" The result was only good, not great.

    4 out of 5 stars Most enjoyable.......2005-09-04

First the bad news - the title track is terrible. Singing is not the forte of these gentlemen. But picking is. Which brings us neatly to the good news - the playing is excellent. To an ex-inhabitant of Oz, the medley "Waltzing Matilda"/"The road to Gundagai" (the NSW country town unfortunately spelt incorrectly) was especially enjoyable.

Additionally, this is an especially precious CD, because I've been told that it was the last thing Chet Atkins ever recorded. The cancer that was to take his life was well advanced at this stage.

5 out of 5 stars The Day Finger Pickers Took Over The World.......2005-07-20

I bought this cd for my father for fathers day. I was raised listening to Chet and Doc Watson and various bluegrass. This is a great album. 100% bonafied finger pickin' heaven.

4 out of 5 stars Très bien ..........2004-09-29

J'aime bien cet CD. Tommy et Chet sont de très bons artistes. Ce CD s'écoute très bien mais je trouve une peu trop "country" certaines plages. Un 8 sur 10 quand même. Bravo!

Back in the days when the forces that controlled television actually cared about art, it was perfectly normal to see original plays and live musical performances right in your living room. In 1950, Menotti was commissioned to write an opera for television, and on Christmas Eve, 1951, Amahl and the Night Visitors was performed by the NBC Television Theater. This recording, under the composer's personal direction, was made a few days later, and it remains the definitive version, even though the sound is very dated and rough in places. This story of a poor shepherd boy's encounter with three kings and the miraculous healing of his crippled leg when he offers his crutch as a gift has captured audiences around the world ever since its premiere. Its charming mix of tuneful melody, dancing rhythms, delightful choruses, humor and poignancy, and an English text makes this work immediately accessible to audiences of all ages and musical tastes. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Christmas music.......2007-05-13

Having seen the original TV production of Amahl as a kid, I have very fond and tender memories of this story, and I find the music to be absolutely delightful - profound but in a very accessible and somewhat playful way. This recording brings back the spirit of Christmas to me instantly!

5 out of 5 stars An unsung genius.......2007-04-10

Giancarlo Menotti slipped peacefully to his rewards recently after having composed some of the finest music of the last century. Although an Italian native, his ability to place English words in his vocal works in exactly the right places to allow singers their best production, he is still not performed often. His story lines are always poignant, whether for opera or ballet and his orchestral works strike at the emotional heart of the listener while giving the performers great opportunities to shine. His Christmas opera, "Amahl and the Night Visitors" was first telecast with a brilliant, wonderfully cast and directed group of singers and dancers and was an immediate success, scheduled to be repeated the following season. Only one copy of the tape was stored and, incredibly, was "accidentally" erased, before the second telecast. It was necessarily recast in the role of Amahl, since the first young boy's voice had changed. This is the result of that recasting, with the rest of the amazing singers and new boy recreating a blessed and beautiful masterpiece. I regret that the same care was not given to the visual aspects in the second, hastily produced telecast.
In my opinion, this creation should be lovingly produced every year!
I am a grateful singer of his works.

5 out of 5 stars Amahl and the Night Visitors made our Christmas very precious!.......2007-01-20

I grew up listening to this operetta and it was so exciting to find it again and make it a part of my family's traditions. This is an excellent recording.

4 out of 5 stars Mother, Mother, Mother Come With Me..........2007-01-13

It's as good as I remember from my own childhood, and I was AMAZED when my 5 year old son DEMANDED to hear it over and over on our recent trip to Minnesota. Now, weeks after we've packed away our Christmas CD's, my son STILL sings out from the other room "Mother! Mother! Mother come with me, I want to be sure that you see what I see!" whenever he wants to show me something. I'm glad that such a wonderful piece of our culture has been woven into the consciousness of yet another generation.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have.......2007-01-10

My earliest childhood memories of Christmas always include Amahl. My parents saw this the first year they were married and it became a tradition to listen to it after that.

It has become the cornerstone of my families holiday celebrations.

5 out of 5 stars An evening to cherish. .......2006-10-28

If we only knew that this now-historic date would be the last stop in a short and often troubled life of Chet Baker....

The setting for this recording is truly brilliant. Chet is accompanied by an 18 piece big band as well as a 43 piece symphony orchestra. Together, a unique musical experience is formed as the NDR big band is accented by the soft and almost whimsical sound of the string section. Additionally, the musical styling of John Schroder's guitar adds layers of depth and punctuation to an already tight rhythm section.

This recording has all the makings for greatness. This set includes jazz greats like All Blues, Summertime, Tenderly, and In Your Own Sweet Way. Chet reminds us of the voice that we all fell in love with during a heartfelt homage to days past with My Funny Valentine. Even through the false teeth and rough exterior, Chet exposes his tender soul with each word.

The fuzzy sound of his trumpet can be heard on the back-end of the beat while Chet's solos are simple in nature, they become wildly complex as he effortlessly weaves in and out of the changes.

Chet provides a taste of his prototypical West-Coast sound in Monk's classic, "Well You Needn't" as he dances with the NDR big band in a rather exciting musical exchange.

I do believe this CD belongs in the company of other great jazz recordings. It certainly would be a welcomed addition to any collection.

Special recognition is in order of Executive Producer, Matthias Winckelmann for bringing such a fine recording to the masses.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Notes and Space.......2006-07-02

I've always been a fan of Chet Baker's trumpet playing and his singing, but never took the trouble to analyze his lines until this album. His solos are like perfect modern sculptures in that they don't waste notes, space, or form. Nothing is superfluous. His 2 choruses of improvisation on All Blues and on In Your Own Sweet Way show the genius of his discipline. His attack is a little more "boppish" than Miles, but he uses spaces as brilliantly. I didn't realize just how magnificent he was as an instrumentalist until transcribing some of his lines on this recording. Wow. I also wondered how someone as dissolute and unhealthy as Chet Baker must have been, could have the strength and breath control to play those lines with so much fluidity and strength. He sustained a few languid tones and played some long-winded phrases with lots of notes over several bars. Imagine what he would have sounded like if he actually took good care of himself. His skills were under-rated. For my money, Frank Sinatra in a lifetime of Sundays couldn't sound one tenth as hip as Chet. Mel Torme might be another story. Great album with phenomenal solos.

    5 out of 5 stars AMAZING.......2006-03-24

This is a great album. Can be very depressing to listen to though. His rendition of My Funny Valentine is nothing short of a masterpiece. Although he was messed up on drugs, his trumpet playing never suffered. Buy this cd if youre a true fan.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have !.......2005-11-03

    Simple presentation. Good sound.
Fabulous inspiration in this concert !
If you want to know the most inspiring part of the life then you must have this one.

    4 out of 5 stars Last concert...big band.......2005-02-27

Since this is Chet's last recorded work, there is an emotional element about listening to this CD. So for historical pruposes, this is an amazing recording. With regard to the quality, his trumpet playing is in top form; however his vocals are a bit weak. However, I'm not much of a fun of the big backing band here -- I prefer to hear Chet in a more scaled downed setting -- such as a small quartet or quintet. Therefore, I'll mark this down to a 4. If you like the larger backing band this is a must have; otherwise, just a nice addition to your Chet Baker collection.
