Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent!.......2007-06-02

I have listened to this album time and time again. I never tire of its beauty, its passion, and its inventiveness. It is one of the few albums I must always have on my MP3 player. It is a work of genius by a man who is brilliantly interpreting the genius of the Beatles. The recording quality is superb.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting and surprising.......2006-06-11

I love this CD. It combines the best of both worlds--classical and rock. Paul McCartney said he took Bach pieces and made them into something new; for instance he used Bach chord progressions for his song "Jenny Wren," on his newest "Chaos and Creation" CD. Well, Bayless takes Beatles melodies and does great Bach-style things with them here. It is fun to hear Beatles done in the Baroque style, interestingly and flawlessly. Bayless is creative in his arrangements, AND he performs so well. This CD makes me smile. I betcha Bach and all four Beatles are smiling whenever its played.

5 out of 5 stars Superb artistry!.......2005-12-31

As a professional classical musician (and erstwhile Beatles fan - my mother raised me listening to them at home in the late 70s) I have to commend this delightful album! The playing itself is fantastic, and the artistry and skill of John Bayless in imitating Bach is really amazing. It's just plain fun to listen to, but sounds like "real" classical music. I've bought this as a gift for many other musical colleagues, to rave reviews!

5 out of 5 stars True to Bach, with a hint of The Beatles.......2005-08-13

This CD is a tribute to Bach with a hint of The Beatles infused between. It rings true to Bach's complex, multi-voiced piano pieces with mild Beatles undercurrents. Beautifully done. I completely disagree with the previous reviewers.

2 out of 5 stars Worth a try, but don't expect much.......2005-08-08

I like listening to experimental music, and thus I have a lot of respect for this album for what it attempts to accomplish. I had high expectations for this experiment because I am a huge fan of Bach and the Beatles. It's very hard to hear any Beatles influence during most of the album. Unless the money that you plan to spend on this album is disposable, I suggest that you consider spending some time listening to the samples before investing in this album.

Product Description

The musical revolution unleashed in Memphis in the ‘50s set the stage for the cultural and musical phenomenon of The Beatles. Fried Glass Onions—Memphis Meets The Beatles Vol. 2 is the follow-up to the critically acclaimed Fried Glass Onions—Memphis Meets The Beatles, released in early 2005. The connections between the lads from Liverpool and Memphis are many. The band openly acknowledged their love of Memphis blues, soul and rockabilly. In fact, the band had planned to record at legendary Stax studio in 1966. Although these sessions never materialized, The Beatles’ respect and appreciation of Memphis music is well documented. This CD offers another 12 tracks of soulful, Memphis interpretations of The Beatles original songs performed by Memphis’ ace musicians and singers. Through it all, the magic of The Beatles is never lost, and in many ways, these recordings take the originals to another level. From the opening Hi Records inspired “Glass Onion” with John Kilzer to the gospel-inspired finale “All You Need Is Love,” Fried Glass Onions Vol. 2 captures the essence of Memphis soul and the heart of The Beatles. Other tracks include Charlie Wood’s “Back In The U.S.S.R.,” a bluesy rendition with a punch. Gary Johns’ jazzy, intimate “I Wanna Be Your Man” totally changes-up this early Beatles rocker. On “Lady Madonna” veteran Memphis singer Eddie Harrison adds a little funk to this Beatles #1 hit song, while the lesser known “For You Blue” is performed by The Billy Gibson Band in a groove only a Memphis band could imagine. Dani’s emotional rendering of McCartney’s “Oh! Darling” showcases the vocal talents of this rising star. “Martha My Dear” is the sole instrumental on this CD and is a Dixieland Jazz rendition complete with trumpet, washboard, banjo, tuba, trombone, piano and clarinet! Memphis soul diva Z-Da sings and shrieks like a woman possessed on “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?” Charles Ponder’s beautiful “In My Life” is absolutely striking in its understated intimacy. Soul veterans The Memphis All-Stars lay back on “Here, There and Everywhere” and allow singer Robert Clayborne to cut-loose on this early Beatles ballad.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It all makes perfect sense somehow..........2006-04-19

I gave a great review to the original "Fried Glass Onions" collection, and Volume 2 doesn't disappoint either, there's just a little bit less originality since it's a follow-up.
The songs are VERY carefully selected - there's no "Yesterday" or "Hey Jude" here. They picked the bluesiest tracks off the "White Album" along with some others - the songs that would translate best into the Memphis sound.
Anyone can cover a Beatles song, but good performers find a way to translate them into their personal style - country, jazz, blues or whatever. The BEST artists make you feel like the song BELONGS in the new style. These versions of "Oh! Darling" and "Why Don't We Do it in the Road" made me realize those were blues songs to begin with!
I'm taking off a star for the covers of "In My Life" and "Here, There and Everywhere" which slow the album down a bit, and feel a little generic. Much better are the versions of "Back in the U.S.S.R.", "Lady Madonna" and "For You Blue", which basically re-work the songs completely from the ground up.
It's a great listen, and your toes WILL tap. There's lots of energy and fun.

Album Description

Fried Glass Onions--Memphis Meets The Beatles is a celebration of The Beatles and of the city that greatly inspired and influenced them. Most of these interpretations have a definitive, identifiable Memphis twist. Daddy Mack Orr's "Get Back" is a stripped-down, blues rendition. Bob Simon & Eddie Harrison's "Two Of Us" sounds like vintage Sam & Dave from the Stax Records era. Most of these versions are either R&B or soul infused, although funk treatments of "The One After 909" and "She Came In Through The Bathroom Window" take the groove a little deeper. The Memphis All-Stars version of "Drive My Car" is absolutely unstoppable and demonstrates the undeniable potency of a four-piece soul band. These 14 tracks represent a diverse pool of contemporary Memphis talent offering fresh versions of Beatles songs that will not disappoint even the most discerning Beatles fan. At the same time, proponents of classic Memphis music will hear Beatles songs like never before and will delight in knowing that Memphis music is alive and well. All of this material was recorded and mixed between June 24 and November 24, 2004, specifically for this unique tribute CD.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome renditions!!.......2007-06-06

5 out of 5 stars Funking with the Beatles.......2007-04-21

I saw this band last night at the Gibson Guitar Factory Lounge in Memphis and was spellbound (and I am not easily entertained). I really expected to be bored but was awed. If you get the rare chance to see this collection of Memphis' best talent live, don't miss it, you'll have a ball. These selections are not note for note covers (and what good would that be?) but reworked Beatles smothered in Memphis funk. Some of the arrangements are startling innovative (ever heard a psychedelic flute or a gospel version of All You Need is Love?) and all are fun. The musicianship throughout is first rate. The cds are not the same as seeing Fried Glass Onions live but all 3 cds belong in any Beatle fan's collection. There are a few misses across the 3 cds--none of the cuts make you run to the player to skip them--but you'll return to the real jewels in these 3 cds for years to come. Get all 3, you won't regret it. By the way, I have no connection to this band and have never before bothered to write a review.

4 out of 5 stars Happiness is...this take on the Beatles.......2007-04-10

Beatles fans are in for a treat when they load this disk into their CD players. Classic Beatle songs are sung & played as never imagined before. Listen to a soulful, haunting version of Blackbird by Jackie Johnson,or Two of Us getting the Sam & Dave treatment (by Simon & Harrison),a cool funked up rendition of She Came In Through the Bathroom Window (Matt Tudor)is lots of fun. Old Brown Shoe, The One After 909, and others are also all here on Volume One. In my opinion, there are a couple of misses. Notably Get Back is especially hard on the ears. Way overall though, if you love the Beatles, and can handle these twisted variations, by all means go for it. You won't experience a hard day's night listening to it.

Alas, I can't recommend Volume 2, but I haven't heard #3 yet, so there is still hope for more great music.

5 out of 5 stars pleasant surprise.......2007-01-23

this CD would have been low on my radar except for some enthusiastic reviews from previous consumers. they were right that any beatles fan who likes good music would like this CD. having been to the rock and soul museum in memphis recently, i got the other two in this set, volumes 2 and 3. the first one is the best and the first to buy. i think this CD is a definite winner.

4 out of 5 stars Most Are Great.......2006-03-15

Although there are a few cuts that I am not thrilled with, over all, this album adds some interesting cuts to my library, originally recorded by the best band of all time. It does have the Memphis feel throughout. Unfortunate that a few of the bands should have stayed in the lounges.

You'd think with the stable of great tunesmiths Motown employed in the '60s that there would be no need to go outside the family for songs. There was no denying the might of the Beatles catalog, however. So it makes sense that Berry Gordy, a man who wanted his brand of black music to be suitable for everyone, would marry his all-star roster to the music of Lennon and McCartney. Great songs, great singers--what could go wrong? Well, sometimes plenty. Listen to the Supremes gamely tackling "A Hard Day's Night," their harmonies trapped in a leaden arrangement that can't switch gears from Liverpool to Detroit. Or cringe as Diana Ross massacres Lennon's solo anthem "Imagine." Sometimes the singers overpower the material, as when the rough-and-ready Four Tops turn the understated "Eleanor Rigby" into a stomp. But sometimes it's sublime, as when Marvin Gaye envisions "Yesterday" as a hushed hymn, or Stevie Wonder revitalizes the already feisty "We Can Work It Out" by giving the tune a soul-drenched swagger. As an artifact of pop culture, this collection is fascinating. As a musical statement? Well, utilize your CD programmer. --Amy Linden

3 out of 5 stars Pappa's Got a Brand New (Mixed) Bag.......2007-02-15

Man. Oh man. I don't want to be too harsh on this collection, because these artists are great and so is the music they are covering.

But man. Oh man. Words cannot describe the butchering some of these classics receive. Listen to The Temps destroy "Hey Jude" and you will know what I mean. On second thought, don't. "Imagine" is a timeless classic, except in this cover version by Diana Ross. I hasten to put any version of a Beatles classic in the same category as Captain Kirk's delirious rendition of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds," but we are getting close. I won't even mention the Supremes' cover of "Come Together." There goes ol' flat top, indeed.

That doesn't mean there aren't some solid tracks here. Marvin Gaye's version of "Yesterday" is moving and elegant. Syreeta is sweet in her take on "She's Leaving Home." And the other tracks are either ok, inoffensive, or mildly enjoyable.

But for me I saw this collection as evidence of some of the flaws of the Motown approach. Overuse of tamborines, too much sweetener applied, songs reduced to mid-tempo numbers, regardless of lyrics or structure.

In short, this record is a curio, worth purchasing only if you are trying to round out your collection of either Motown or the Beatles.

Oh, and to hear Diana passionately sing about "toejam football."

4 out of 5 stars nice surprise.......2007-01-23

this is a group of great performers singing great songs. i didn't like some of the songs, just because i am not a big fan of the singers, not because they did a bad job. if you like the singers, you will like the songs. some of the songs were a real treat and some just nice. look at the performers before you get it.

3 out of 5 stars Vintage Motown Can Never be Bad.......2006-07-05

Although I was very disappointed with a couple of the covers (the Temptations' "Hey Jude" and the Four Tops' "Eleanor Rigby"), I'd still recommend this CD for folks who miss the good ol' days of Motown ... artists we love, singing some of the greatest songs ever written.

5 out of 5 stars So Awesome.......2006-06-09

Wow. Just found out this album was in existence. I now own it and i am pretty excited about it. If you're a fan of soul, Motown, and The Beatles then this disc should be yours.

Of course, if you're not a fan of soul, Motown, and/or The Beatles then avoid this like the plague.

I admit that a few of the songs are a bit mediocre and just plain not good, but otherwise, gobble it up. Goes down real smooth.

2 out of 5 stars ITS OKAY!.......2005-11-21

Eddie's sound must be a labor of love. It's completely true to form for 1962-63, with vintage guitars, hollow snare drum, neon-light hoarse vocals. If you like the Beatles at Hamburg's Starclub, or the BBC-radio sessions, you'll love this.

Yeah, you should. While there are more innovative and radical albums being made today, you'll be hard pressed to find one as chock full of well written and catchy songs as you'll find here. There isn't a clunker in the bunch and the melodies are ones that will build upon themselves and only become more enjoyable over time. A hook is something the Its! are familiar with. This driving set is one that has become a staple of my 'most played' albums and has risen to the stack time and time again. Any fan of the Clash, Franz Ferdinand, Hot Hot Heat, the Strokes, or rock 'n roll in general will find something for them. It's nice to hear something worthwhile from such a young band that's only going to improve with time.

More of a crooner like Frank Sinatra or Harry Connick Jr. than a rocker, Randy Wooten and company combine big band style drumming with eclectic piano arraignments to create a soundtrack suitable for your favorite coffee or art house.
