Album Description
Listening to these powerful 1939-41 recordings by Cab Calloway provides a strong reminder of just how good these musicians were. During this period, Cab Calloway was riding high...and as Gillespie and Berry joined the band, they began to shift the Calloway band into an even better one, with more features for soloists.

Arrangements are crucial to any big band. While most are written by Andy Gibson or Buster Harding, other important contributors include Chappie Willet, Edgar Battle, Buck Ram, Benny Carter, Don Redman and Jesse Stone.

    The idiot from Virginia thought it a bit strange that an American black man would give the communists a chance. Looking back from modern perspective is easier than what he had to go on in the thirtes. Gee, I wonder why a black man would do that after all that southern hospitality, segregation, and steady work you gave the "black folk". Not to mention all those nighttime campfires you had going in their honor.
    While I might be from New York I certainly would not be called a bleeding heart liberal but I can certainly understand why the poor soul was looking elsewhere. You are either ignorant of history and its influences on people or you are a totally unsympathetic jackass!!

    I own several Robeson recordings and purchased this one with high hopes as it has a great selection of tracks. Unfortunately given the excellent recording quality of "Songs for Free Men" and "The Paul Robeson Oddyssey", the remasters from what I assume are 78's and possibly radio are a let down and mar what could have been an excellent album.

    This 2 CD set of Paul Robeson is the definitive collection providing a decent overview of his work in 50 tracks all wonderfully restored from 78s as usual for ASV, with spirituals, show tunes, Shakespeare-like readings, and more done with a trademark bass voice and orchestration that backs up Paul perfectly and he would later be one of the first civil rights activists. The first disc is a reissue of the single disc "Ol' Man River-His 25 Greatest" on ASV containing "Ol' Man River," "Mighty Like a Rose," "Joshua Fit De Battle Ob Jericho," "Carry Me Back To Green Pastures," "Lazy Bones," and many more classics which is also available here at Amazon for those who only want a single disc of Paul's work and the 2nd disc contains 25 more classics including "Nobody Knows The Trouble I've Seen," "The Old Folks At Home," "My Old Kentucky Home," "Wagon Wheels," "Git On Board, Little Children," and many more. In other words, all 50 of these tracks are essential to any early pop, folk, gospel, blues, etc. music fan and this is the set to introduce yourself to his work in a convenient 2 CD package with the usual great liner notes and details on the original 78s ASV provides with each CD released in their Living Era series.

    It's enlightening and, frankly, very moving to hear well-known Hebrew texts such as the "Bar'chu" and "Adon Olam" brought forth from the synagogue and recast as Baroque gems. If Jewish tradition and "mainstream" classical idioms have always inhabited different musical spheres in your mind, those worlds will collide here.

    The only fault with this recording that I would mention is the chorus' rather aggressive delivery, particularly in some of the Rossi--a relentless intensity that I associate more happily with the Boston Camerata's excellent recordings of American traditional repertoire than with the Baroque. But certainly a spirited and exacting performance.

    5 out of 5 stars What's not to like about this album?.......2003-01-24

    Rarely do I give unqualified praise of anything. Maybe the fact I do here (well, almost) shows my ignorance, but I like just about everything about this album. What's not to like? OK, I would've liked some transliterations and not just translations of the Hebrew texts in the liner notes, but the whole concept of Judeo-Baroque music is fascinating. This album gives a view into a unique confluence of cultures at a unique time, and features two special loves of mine while it does (Hebrew and Baroque music). The instrumental and vocal performances are splendid, the liner notes informative, and the cover attractive. As I said, what's not to like?

    Well, at least some people at the time didn't like some of this music. To the Jews, it was too musically alien; to the Gentiles, too verbally alien. Sometimes you just can't win. But some Jewish composers of Baroque music (like Rossi) did well for themselves then and retain lasting fame now -- and that's good news all around. As for the modern listerner, if you like Baroque music, you ought to like this: European ear candy with just enough Middle Eastern spice to be interesting. I'd recommend it for Sabbath listening and secular enjoyment alike, and you can't say that about every album.

    5 out of 5 stars A Pleasure From Start To Finish.......2002-08-06

    This CD may be one of the biggest surprizes I have ever had. If you can imagine the music of Monteverdi sung in Hebrew, I don't need to say a lot more. The three pieces on this disc were composed by three composers with whom I was unfamiliar: Salamone de Rossi Ebreo, a Mantuan Jew, Louis Saladin, a Gentile of Provencal, and Carlo Grossi, a Gentile of Modena. As noted above, all the lyrics are in Hebrew, but the musical style is pure, fresh and delightful 17th century early Baroque. The pieces were apparently composed for festive celebrations, and the Boston Camerata under Joel Cohen keeps that mood throughout the disc. The disc is a little short-41 minutes-but nicely priced, and wonderful sounding.

        This reissue is deceptive at first--by the looks of it, one would assume it's one of those honking, tenor-sax duels of the "Jazz at the Philharmonic" variety (think Illinois Jacquet vs. Flip Phillips). However, tenor-sax greats Coleman Hawkins and Chu Berry, although they both recorded during the same era, never actually dueted--not here anyway. As an integral member of Cab Calloway's Big Band, Berry's sessions as a leader were few. However, in 1938 and again in '41, Milt Gabler, who owned Commodore records, supervised the young tenor man in a session like the ones he organized for Hawkins around the same time. What Tenor Giants, then, consists of is several recordings of Berry and Hawkins leading bands through small-band swing, sometimes using the same players (the great Roy Eldridge appears in both bands) but never appearing in tandem. Their styles on tenor are different--as can be heard on the first version of "I Can't Believe That You're in Love with Me," marked by the Hawk's softer and more well-rounded tone (Benny Carter's clarinet solo is also no slouch). Berry, in turn, had a more harmonically frenetic jab that would've probably caught on as much as Hawkins if the former hadn't died in 1941. They share a spirited prebop sensibility, with lots of mournful, bluesy textures and high-flying solos as Berry and his ensemble tackle standards of the day, from "Stardust" to a version of "Body and Soul" that starts out like a dirge. Berry really soars on his own "Blowin' Up a Breeze" (written in tandem with Hot Lips Page, who plays excellent trumpet), and the general spirit of harmonious interplay and good-time vibes is generally contagious throughout. --Joe S.           This is one of the most beautiful, uplifting, and heartwrenching CD's I have ever head. The music is simply awe-inspiring. Esai Einai is one of my favorite pieces of all time. Exquisite!
