Legendary Music Vol. 1 - 420 Review.......2007-04-10
First off, I have to say I'm really picky when it comes to music, and have very few CD's in my collection that I like to listen to all the way thru. LMvol.1 with the exception of maybe one song is one of those cd's. Another thing I like about this cd is that you don't have to be in a certain mood to listen to it. For me, this cd takes me through all my mood-sets. So whether I'm feelin like some mellow beats or fast-paced rhymes, this cd addresses that nicely.
LL crew still a step above..........2007-03-28
... and I apologize if I didn't always rise to occasion
I had to come of age and apply
My knowledge to my personal experiences,
If I didn't I could have died in all seriousness.
We've come far,
As a person, as a people, as a world
It's time to raise the bar.
It's not hard, just remember who you are...
It's not hard, just remember...
The last track - track 11 - is now my favorite hip hop song. If only it were longer than 3 1/2 minutes and two verses. The 2nd verse is for sure one to remember. If you're a real fan of hip hop or just music in general, please treat yourself and get this album. If you like 50 Cent and Eminem, don't bother. You're not going to hear songs about candy shops or being in da club. It's positive but not cheesy and stupid...
don't know what "huntercat" is talkin bout.......2007-01-25
Arata is tight, no doubt, & if you can track down some older Legends stuff with him on it check it out. That being said, he's not on this album. This is a compilation of songs from the Legends various solo releases in 2006.
Dope from the east.......2005-03-23
Arata is kicking. He is a Living Legend member from back in the day and this is his solo. Most of the rapping is in japanese and is really cool. Arata rapps a little english but is much better with his own language and flow. The beats are top notch and all the way around this is a solid CD. If you are a LL fan you will like Arata

Amazon.com essential recording
This collection of Baroque music consists of works by a composer that Segovia ceaselessly promoted throughout his career: J.S. Bach. As his compatriot Pablo Casals's performances of the Bach cello suites added so much to the great composer's reputation, Segovia's performances of Bach's lute suites and other works greatly enhanced the public's perception of the Leipzig master as the most "universal" of composers. His playing imbues Bach's music with a very special warmth and humanity. This disc is one of the most important and rewarding in the Segovia discography. --David Hurwitz
Customer Reviews:
I can't get enough of this CD.......2002-02-23
Andres Segovia, for my money, is the finest virtuoso guitarist who ever lived. Jimi Hendrix comes in at a close second because of his craftsmanship and highly innovative style. But there was something about Segovia that separated him from everyone else, regardless of genre.
The last review (from Mickey) reminded me there are more important elements to a musician than his or her technical skills. The "warmth and spirituality," as astutely noted by Mickey, are the seminal elements that make Segovia's playing so special. He brought Bach's compositions to life, and his interpretation of them here is compelling.
My music collection graces almost the entire gamut of music genres, from opera and classical guitar to hardcore and death metal. I'm proud to have Segovia's music in my collection. This is mandatory listening for anyone who cherishes quality music, especially those who are partial towards virtuoso guitar. I love it!
Segovia Is THE Master.......2001-07-12
Perhaps some of today's best classical guitarists have surpassed Segovia's pure technical ability, but the warmth and spirituality that Segovia brings to his playing will forever remain unsurpassed. In this particular CD, Segovia(he was very much a Bach specialist) brings not only life but an almost spiritual warmth to these Bach pieces, originally for lute, cello, and violin. Segovia shows why he is the greatest of all classical guitarists, one of the greatest musicians of the century and one of the few truly great interpreters of Bach(along with fellow spaniard and cellist Pablo Casals, pianists Glenn Gould and Rosalyn Tureck, and violinist Rachel Podger). Get this if you love guitar, get this if you love music, and get this if you love Bach. This album truly has some of the greatest interpretations of Bach pieces on record.
Bravo!.......2001-05-07
Segovia's a genius! Being a violinist, I haven't been moved by any guitar renditions of violin works. Segovia's recording is an exception. His interpretation of the Bach Chaconne is as captivating as any violin recordings. It's masterful.
The Soul of Bach.......2001-03-15
Anyone who was enchanted by Yo Yo Ma's recent video compilation of Bach's cello suites and who has an ear for guitar will also find something special here. Segovia brings a reverence and timelesness to these works, all of them ineffable masterpieces. While recording techniques and outright virtuosity have continued to develop since these recordings (Williams in the Lute Suites, Bream/Barrueco in the Chaconne, Sollscher/Galbraith and others in the Cello Suites) the sense of discovery and sheer love of beauty shine through as strongly as ever. These recordings will be around for a long time to come, but jump right in and be enchanted by as accurate and unwavering an account of these works as you ever thought possible.
That's it.......2000-08-12
Segovia loves guitar. He DOES loves it. All this can be heard in this cd, the whole Bach work, half of them adapted for guitar by segovia himself. And you will find that only a true artist can play and sing like this, confident, self-contained, even smiling in his own world . There is needless to judge such a performance. This is true excellent music.

A legendary album.......2006-01-06
Released in 1974 while Elvis was still alive, this compilation included for the first time outtakes and alternate versions of songs every fan knew by heart. It also included the master takes of some of his biggest hits.
This album was produced by Joan Deary who, at the time, was supposed to become Elvis's next producer after Felton Jarvis. Jarvis had been Elvis's own producer since 1966 but by 1974 nobody could get Elvis in the studio, not even Jarvis although RCA Records relied on him. They thought Jarvis was incompetent and they wanted to get rid of him, the record sales were becoming really bad since mid-1973 so RCA put Joan Deary in charge of Elvis's back catalogue. She did a tremendous job with LEGENDARY PERFORMER, the fans and the critics were happy and the mass audience could get another view of Elvis.
Elvis would do only three more recording sessions before his death (one in 1975, two in 1976), not showing at a fourth one on January 1977. Jarvis tried everything he could to keep his job, promising new songs and new records to RCA while Elvis did evrything he could to stop them. He was so bored at that time, full of medication, waiting for death.
This album (the first of the four volumes) did very well in the charts, selling more copies than Elvis's new records. But it did some good for his career too because just before his death his record sales began to rise again. His new albums sold more copies while the back catalogue did very well too.
It's truly a great album and I'm not sure Deary would have made a better job than Jarvis but at least she was the first person at RCA Records to take care of Elvis's musical legacy.

A decent introduction to the Legendary Performer!.......2004-09-18
Elvis A Legendary Performer Volume 1 is a fine place to get introduced to the man's music. This was the first Elvis album that I owned. While the album is extremely skimpy by today's standards, it is a good album.Out of the 10 songs two of them are excerpts from interviews, so in all reality there are only 8 songs, but among those eight songs are some of Elvis's best early recordings like Heartbreak Hotel, Don't Be Cruel,Love Me Tender, adn Can't Help Falling in Love, which I personally think some of these songs represent his strongest material, basically he was at his best during the 50's and early 60's. Some of these are the songs that drew me in to Elvis's music. There are many complations that cover his career in much more depth, but for a quick taste of Elvis's best years check out A Legendary Performer Volume 1.
Awesome.......1999-07-19
Being a young Elvis fan, this CD had a big meaning. My parents bought be this CD for Christmas one year and from then on I was in love with Elvis' music. I bought numerous CD's of his after this and I think that there is no other "Legendary Performer"

Fine, heartfelt truegrass gospel.......2004-09-03
The Marshall Family "The Legendary Marshall Family, v.1" (Rebel, 2002)
The Marshall Family "The Legendary Marshall Family, v.2" (Rebel, 2004)
Two fine collections of good, old-fashioned bluegrass gospel tunes, with bright, cheerful vocal and instrumental performances and a simple, joyous set of songs. Each of these discs collects tracks drawn from several of the Marshall Family albums of the 1970s, when the group was still a working, touring truegrass band. There are a few guest appearances -- a young Ricky Skaggs joining in some sweet a capella quartet vocals, for example -- but mostly it's the family itself, presenting this music in as simple and sincere a light as possible. It's great stuff. Later, after the familt act disbanded, various members moved into the equally under-the-radar Southern Gospel scene, either as songwriters or as members of up-and-coming bands such as The Isaacs (who praise the Marshalls in the liner notes of Volume 2, and cite them as early influences). Folks of a more secular bent who still appreciate certain strains of bluegrass gospel, the kinds that have a buoyant, optimistic feel, may find these albums quite enjoyable. I liked 'em!

Se habla Espan~ol!.......2005-05-15
These are the sessions produced by Jazz critic Roberto Ayala, who made an extensive search around Mexico to find the most talented musicians in the Jazz medium in order to record them.
This was March 5th, 1954
(These CD's volume one and volume two are made in Spain and I give four stars because the sound quality is not as good as it could have been had the master tapes fallen into the hands of Rudy Van Gelder for example, I wish these could be remastered.)
In 1954, Hector "El Arabe" Hallal tenor and alto saxophonist had been playing in the United States and Mario Patron (pianist, flutist) had recently arrived to Mexico City from Mazatlan.
Cesar Molina was the first Mexican trumpeter in many years to play Jazz and had always been in the best orchestras in Mexico.Pablo Jaimes pianist from the Art Tatum school was possesor of great technique and inventiveness but sadly inclined only to play foreign composers as opposed to Mario Patron,(I say sadly because Jazz versions of Mexican boleros are very very rare and far in between making me wish I could hear this wonderful pianist in a more Latin mode), Victor Ruiz Pasos, best bass player in his speciality and leader of several groups. Tino Contreras, the most outstanding drummer in Mexico at the time and the one that fought the most to make Jazz known in the country. Tomas "La Negrita" Rodriguez and Roman Lopez saxophonists, the later a member of the orchestra of Luis Alcaraz and last but not least Pepe Solis trumpeter in the orchestra of Everett Hoagland and the quartet of Chucho Zarzosa, who plays French Horn like a dream.
Both volume one and two of "Jazz in Mexico the Legendary 1954 sessions" offer some world class performances of great numbers by Cole Porter, Gershwin, Benny Goodman and Jerome Kern, and the Mexicans Consuelo Velazquez, Maria Grever, Mario Ruiz Armengol, Jose Sabre Marroquin, Luis Alcaraz and two of the interpreters: Ruiz Pasos and Patron Contreras.
My personal favorite is volume two, maybe because it has more Mexican tunes in it, but I recommend both.
The best numbers in VOLUME ONE are:
"Cuerdas Tristes", written by Ruiz Pasos, It has a taste of the Mexican balads of the 50's, but immersed totally in the Jazz language, with some of the best bowing in the CD.
"Rumbola" by Contreras, proves that not only Max Roach can groove. Cesar Molina swings with every note, on the spot, very smooth.
"Cuando vuelva a tu lado" shows the best interpretation of this number I've ever heard, here Molina is smooth as silk and the walking bassline by Ruiz Pasos is right on time, giving you a feel of well-being as you listen, despite the fact that this is a bolero, Mario Patron plays a la Oscar Peterson, without excessive ornamentation or waste of notes, really nice.
"How high the moon" shows the incredible chops of "El Arabe", making you wonder if he could have become as famous as Sonny Rollins if he had been born in a different place while Pablo Jaimes gets smoke out of the keys and shows great stride technique.
"You can depend on me" is another high swinging number showing the great talent of these musicians, I wish I could get them in a studio today! (Maybe the sound would be better)
"Casbah" dedicated to a coffee shop around downtown Mexico City's Ayuntamiento shows the Mambo sound of the saxophone ensemble with "El Arabe","La Negrita" and Roman Lopez on Baritone taking you back to the feeling of Mambo No. 5 and immediately after keep swingin' with a more Benny Goodman texture, the transition between the two imperceptible. The latin groove by Contreras is as good as any of the American drummers of the day, and this lasts for merely 58 seconds before plunging into the improvisations by each of the performers. Specially good is the solo by Pepe Solis. I wonder why there aren't as many French horners in Jazz as there are trumpeters...
Volume one closes with "Fascinating rhythm" by Gershwin, well interpreted, very tight, but it sounds a lot like a Swing Orchestra up to the 56 second, when the more boppy feel begins.
VOLUME TWO has also some great tracks, among my favorites being:
"Everything happens to me", with nice brushwork by contreras but mostly, a very sentimental Patron playing piano just like the Mexican 50's should be.
"Pennies from heaven" is another great number but nothing out of the extraordinary, maybe because this number has been played and played by so many different people. Competent, though.
This second CD also has more latin numbers and they are ALL great:"Silenciosa", with an almost Wynton Marsallis quality to it.
"Contigo en la Distancia", also the best interpretation I've heard of this number which lends itself perfectly for the Jazz medium shows that influences flow South and not only North.
"Volvere'" an uptempo number written by Maria Grever, again with wonderful trumpeteering and good keywork, proves that "El Quarteto de Cesar Molina" is the best group in the CD.
"Vacilando" by Luis Alcaraz displays the enormous influence that Jazz had on the late Band director-composer, with a steaming solo by Tino Contreras, as good as Gene Krupa closing the number.
"Don't blame me" displays a very silky tenor, marked by an accurate Ruiz Pasos on bass.
"Viernes a las Nueve" blows your mind with the incredible Sax ensemble with "El Arabe" on alto and "La Negrita" on tenor as well as Roman Lopez on Baritone. Tino Contreras yet again with the afro-cuban groove shows who's the granddaddy of Mexican drummers. Outstanding solo on French Horn by Pepe Solis, everybody playing tight, swiveling from swing to bop in the blink of an eye. Nice bass solo by Victor Ruiz Pasos, this particular number is my favorite on both CD's and was written by Hector "El Arabe" Hallal himself.
"Besame Mucho" is a big number in Japan, made famous by Trio los Panchos, who brought bolero to this Far Eastern land. It sounds a little too much big band but it's good (Dominick Farinacci makes a better interpretation on his CD of the same title ASIN: B0002Q2KHI)
"Prisionero del Mar" is the last number, written by Luis Alcaraz, seems like this is the number where the musicians had the most fun, you can hear them yelling at each other words of encouragment, just like in a hot session where everything clicks.
Great closing number for a great CD.

Kincaid's performance was quite disappointing--out of tune, slipshod technique. The Chaminade was incomplete.
