Ostentatiously billed as "the only true tribute to the man known as the Greatest American Composer of the Twentieth Century," this program puts a decidedly contemporary spin on Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington. At times dripping with pathos and oversentimentality, this is a largely successful smooth-jazz-infused polishing of classic Ellingtonia. Going Home is a pop-R&B crossover producer's all-star dream date, crafted by George Duke, Kashif, and Dwayne Wiggins, who hip hops "It Don't Mean a Thing" with Guru. Six Ellington classics are given a millennium twist, and four new pieces make extensive use of Duke-like themes, lyrics, and tune titles. The best example of the latter is Jerry Butler, Grady Tate, and the Dells' spirited collaboration "Swinging at the Cotton Club." Two fortuitous partnerships are forged when Nancy Wilson and Kenny Lattimore team up for a mellow "Don't Get Around Much Anymore," while Jon Hendricks, Al Jarreau, Take 6, and Gregory Hines's tap-dancing render "Going Home" a moving, polystylistic tribute. --Willard Jenkins
Customer Reviews:
Entertaining tribute.......2000-07-02
The celebration of Duke Ellington a century after his birth has produced a wealth of tributes and, thankfully, some fine reissues of his work. This CD takes a more contemporary approach to Ellington's music resulting in a sort of smooth jazz sampler of the Duke. It's a very entertaining approach with some stellar work by an all-star roster of artists. Well worth a listen.

Album Description
This CD is a tribute to one of America's greatest composers, Edward Kennedy "Duke" Ellington. The songs are bluesy soulful original instrumental arrangements of some of the "Duke's" biggest hits. The arrangements are built around the great piano stylings of Bobby Zee, the lush string arrangements of Llew Matthews, the unmistable soulful saxophone of Rob Kyle and the smooth solid fretless bass and stand-up bass of Zoe.

"I've Got It Bad..." The more I listen, the more I love it! Lush strings, soulful sax and unique piano grooves make this tribute to "The Duke" a cut above the rest. Bobby Zee and friends have hit a home run with this great CD.

At least Duke would appreciate it........2007-02-24
Produced by Herbie Mann with liner notes by Leonard Feather, this album displays the sound and good taste of tenor-alto sax legend David Fathead Newman to maximum advantage. In fact, it's a tour de force for Fathead, who submits definitive versions of all 11 Ellington compositions, some rarely heard (and no "A Train" or "Satin Doll"!). The piccolo bass of Ron Carter and trombone of Jim Pugh make the session even more attractive, contributing to the colorful, "Ellingtonian" textures of the orchestrations. It's tough to account for the neglect of this one, which should hit it just right for both Ellington lovers and fans of saxophone as played by a living legend who shows why he deserves the title.
My favorite moment: Fathead's gorgeous flute work on "Azure" (no wonder Herbie Mann was content to produce the session rather than play on it!).
This is simply a recording that's impossible to dislike, more receptive to repeated listenings than Joe Henderson's tribute to Billy Strayhorn. Maybe the album is a bit "refined" in cover design, concept, and audio (neither Peter Washington's bass nor Lewis Nash's drum kit is "artificially enhanced," as is the case on most of the recordings I've received of late). I'd say all the more reason to pick up a copy while it's still around.

Joyful is for Don Sebesky aficionados more than fans of Ellington, a distinction that must be made because of the dissimilarity between the two composer-arrangers. Where Ellington emphasized harmonic complexity in his horn voicings, Sebesky condenses brass and reeds for greater thrust and momentum. And where Ellington strove for understated elegance and relatively seamless melodic and rhythmic transitions in his charts, Sebesky is something of a showoff, writing abrupt, dynamic shifts in mood and tempo, heavily accented to maximize the razzmatazz. Thus, such Ellington classics as "Mood Indigo," "Caravan," and "Satin Doll" are boldly interpreted in a more pastiche manner, and Billy Strayhorn's "Chelsea Bridge" sounds closer to Doc Severinsen than Duke Ellington. Sebesky, who won a Grammy for an arrangement on his 1998 Bill Evans tribute CD, I Remember Bill, clearly intends to provide something fresh--his greatest fidelity to Ellington is on the obscure "Warm Valley"--and he's recruited the personnel here to make it happen. More than half of the 10 songs reunite alto saxophonist Phil Woods with former mates Tom Harrell and Jim McNeely, with Ron Carter joining in on three of the cuts. Not surprisingly, one of those--a Sebesky-jolted "Creole Love Call"--is the record's highlight. --Britt Robson

*Great* jazz CD!.......2000-05-03
I'm one of those people who loves jazz, but doesn't know what CDs to buy, because there's a billion different styles and some styles are less pleasing than others. Well this CD captures everything I love about Jazz... it's Duke Ellington, kick-started by Don Sebesky, and it's fantastic.

Having proven his tango credentials, Daniel Barenboim makes another move beyond his classical orbit, into jazz. It's a qualified success. Cliff Colnot has scaled down Ellington's big-band arrangements for a smaller group (most of them apparently from Barenboim's orchestra, the Chicago Symphony) with relatively convincing results. The ensemble plays well and the music still swings. However, only the celebrity jazz guests, vocalist Dianne Reeves and clarinetist Don Byron--both of whom could have held down a place with the Ellington band in its prime--get much chance to do solos, always an essential part of Ellington's music. And they're on only two cuts each. Barenboim's concluding solo, "Fast and Furious," is an unconvincing replica of Ellington's playing. Check out Ellington's own recordings first. --Leslie Gerber
Customer Reviews:
Better Than You Might Expect.......2007-05-29
While few of these tracks will send you racing to the dance floor, they swing more than you might expect (appearances by Dianne Reeves and Don Byron help) and the recording quality is superb. Given that carefully-arranged chamber music isn't exactly out of line with Ellington's own approach, Barenboim's approach deserves consideration; just don't expect the kind of solos Ellington's own sidemen regularly supplied.
Sorry but not that good.......2007-01-27
Though Maestro Barenboim is one of the great Euro-classical artists of our time, this album is not that good. Barenboim just did not get it, in my opinion. He's too stiff and perhaps too schooled in the European classical genre where interpretation is more structured rather than free and spontaneous with an affinity for the other musicians and the piece being played. Thus Barenboim is barely playing in most instances, seems too stilted, too deliberate. Yet, thankfully, he is a great classical pianist and conductor. A good effort though. Diane Reeves and Don Byron are great; of course Jazz is their domain.
Me thinks the maestro's ego got in the way when he said this about the album: "Together we have evolved a very particular style of playing this music. This is what fascinates me in this music, this is the reason why I did this recording. I do not mean to say that this is the only way to play Ellington, of course not. But it is consistent and it is exactly what I had imagined." --Daniel Barenboim (source: booklet enclosed with the CD)
Well, sorry DB, you missed the point entirely. You can't evolve perfection. But you should know that having played the perfect compositions of Mozart. Perhaps, "Barenboim on a Theme of Ellington" would have been the better title. Yet, being serious music, this particular work may grow on me after all.
A Great Album.......2003-06-03
I love this album. I know... a German classical performer isn't as spontaneous and soulful as many jazz performers but this album has great feeling of elegance. The arrangements are great, the performances are wonderful and the recording is sparkling. What DB lacks in soul he makes up for in polish.
Does Justice to "The Duke".......1999-12-28
Let me begin by expressing my desire for a more nuanced rating system. In reality, this CD is closer to a 4.5, but I'll be fair and round up. While we're still on the subject of reality, folks, lets face the cold, hard fact: no recording to date surpasses or matches Ellington's own releases with his original band (I don't believe any future recordings will either). With this in mind, it is pointless to compare the new crop to the stunning originals. In fact, many modern interpreters of Ellington's music have doomed themselves to inescapable failure by attempting to recreate what "The Duke" achieved. Barenboim and his guests, however, have no false hopes of attaining the unattainable. Rather, they play these pieces in the spirit of Ellington and his band -with scrupulous sensitivity, exposing the subtleties of meter, phrasing, harmonic modulation, and melodic variation - not in the completely unique style of their models. What results is an outstanding rediscovery and reaffirmation of the limitless possibilities of Ellington's compositions. To summarize: not better than the real thing, but not trying to be. What we have here is a work of art, born out of love for - and dedication to - one of the 20th Century's greatest musical masters, projected by some of the most adroit musicians before the public today.
Great!.......1999-12-23
Wonderful music. I must admit I haven't heard other Ellington recordings, so I can't compare, but this CD is so fun and relaxing - which is enough.
