Feed the Fire [Live]

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com
Lionel Hampton nicknamed her "Betty Bebop" way back when--and the soul of bebop was alive and kickin' in Betty Carter when this 1993 live set was recorded at London's Royal Festival Hall. It's a kind of dream date, with Carter accompanied by pianist Gerri Allen, bassist Dave Holland, and drummer Jack DeJohnnette. So what I want to say is: "Wow." I guess that's not a very articulate critical observation, but as Carter (a sizzling scat singer) knows, sometimes words just aren't enough to say what needs to be expressed. Some jazz singers (like Billie Holiday or Shirley Horn) don't stray too far from the melody in their improvisations, but Carter takes off and flies like the great bebop sax/horn players. The arrangements on these 10 songs sometimes deliberately downplay the melodies--like a mysteriously beautiful "Lover Man" that Billie Holiday would never recognize. Slowed almost to a standstill and built around a piano figure that echoes Herbie Hancock's "Maiden Voyage," the words are familiar, but the tune is almost undetectable. Carter's up to something else altogether, and makes spine- tingling music. --Jim Emerson --This text refers to the Audio CD edition.

2 out of 5 stars I need originality to be inspired.......2006-06-18

I think it's great that this woman stands so strongly behind her convictions and she is clearly a very talented poet. I just wonder why talented artists who clearly have an abundance of creativity cannot find their own voices and instead insist upon copying Ani Difranco's style. This makes the album painful for me to listen to. Clearly, Alix is an amazing poet. However, hearing her recite them is like listening to someone trying to mimick Ani Difranco. She is great at sounding like her. I honestly could not tell the difference. Sorry, but I think thats kind of lame. I can't listen to Alix. I think she is extremely talented...yet this whole business of stealing Ani's style... I can't stand it. It happens to often and it is just..kind of lame. What happened to originality? If I want Ani, I'll listen to her. Otherwise I'd just like to read Alix's poems.

5 out of 5 stars Not so subtle sister.......2004-12-28

I've had the pleasure of hearing Alix perform several times. In addition, I've had a chance to talk with her. This woman stands fully behind what she says. There's no glamour or glitz; what you see and hear is what you get. She truly lives to speak about what she experiences and to empower women. This album is incredibly raw and overflowing with the truth of what is going on in this world. It also runs the gamut of political commentary (like the title track "Independence Meal") and personal reflection ("8 x 10"). Alix's voice is an instrument, rocking the listener with her own syncopated rhythm. Seeing her perform is the only thing better than listening to this album!

5 out of 5 stars More than Just Ani Difranco.......2004-09-03

It's easy to say that Alix is just copying Ani Difranco, especially if you're a huge Difranco fan. But, let's be honest, folks, I really think that Alix is unique and very, very clever. Her poetry is more than just words, it's what all writers grasp for... a voice. She can make us all look back and wonder what life is really like. She has a tour coming up and I highly recommend you check out her web page for details. I won't miss it for the world.

2 out of 5 stars thr originality of passion.......2004-06-03

I give her credit where it needs to be, but honestly folks, if I didn't know any better I would say that Ani Difranco had a new album. Alix uses the same patterns, phrasing, and vocal techniques as Ani- and to such a large extent that it sounds just like her!! When playing the album, I've had others ask me when did Ani release this new record. Originality Alix, please.

5 out of 5 stars Another wake-up call from Alix.......2004-02-28

To say this woman has a way with words is a serious understatement. She can not only make you feel what she is saying, she can take you there, put you right in the middle of it. This is not happy little songs to get you through your life, this is the truth, with nothing held back. Alix is nothing less than extraordinary.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Schmitten!!!!.......2006-09-13

It is so hard to put in to words how wonderful I think this collection of songs is. It truly showcases so many of the talents possessed by this man. From the various instruments he plays, to the phenomenal range of his smooth vocals, which is especially shown on "Top of the Stairs", it's all good. The songs range in style from the very SEXY "Running", to the strength and vulneralbility of a father on "Song for Owen". I really think Timothy shared a piece of his heart in this masterful work. I for one, and I know many others, are waiting impatiently for the next solo project from TBS.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Timothy.......2005-12-18

Hauntingly layered harmonies. A little bit of Poco, a little bit of Eagles in recently written compositions. A great way to immerse one's self in the unique quality of Timothy's voice.

5 out of 5 stars Feed the Fire is burning hot..........2005-09-05

This is an excellent CD. Timothy B. Schmit has a voice as smooth as silk, and the music is exceptional.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing to listen to...........2005-08-12

Timothy seems to know how to blend music with his voice and does a very nice job of it on this cd. This cd seems to showcase his writing skills as well as his vocal skills. An enjoyable cd to listen to at any time. With his talent, I'm not surprised by the quality of this cd. The only thing I'm dissapointed in is the lack of air time this has had. There is some quality music and talent on this cd that should not be overlooked.

    5 out of 5 stars jazz summit !!!! 6 stars deserved !!!! .......2004-09-13

you've got here the best example of what a jazz cd should be according to me : diversity, hits, complexity, deconstruction, exploration, swing, Music, Musicians... "Feed the Fire" is to Betty Carter what Sassy Swings the Tivoli is to Sarah vaughan or what Ella In Berlin is to Ella Fitzgerald. This is her masterpiece (no surprise that this cd is out of stock, everybody wanted it, but what is Verve waiting for to reissue it????I ve only got a used cassette-tape- of the concert).... Please note that you've got a spectacular second set with high level duets (Jack DeJohnette/ Betty, Geri Allen / Betty and impressive Dave Holland with my favorite female ! As soon as it is reissued, don't wait! Go for it !

    5 out of 5 stars On fire.......2002-03-31

Energy and intelligence pour out of this record, as Betty works with a sharp little group -- including Jack De Johnette and Geri Allen -- that knows how to listen and react. She's feeling great and this record will do the same for you. Put it on while you're working and feel the Mozart effect.

5 out of 5 stars Rich velvet, electricity, fireworks.......1998-08-23

Between the snap and pop of Jack DeJohnette's drums, the rich foundation of Dave Holland on bass, and Geri Allen's haunting piano geometries, Betty Carter emerges alive, vivid, and enthralling. The energy of this record is overwhelming and delicious -- an under-appreciated masterpiece.

5 out of 5 stars Silky touch that is ingratiating and seductive.......2004-04-10

Playing Time - 54:09 -- Grammy-award winner Mary Youngblood is an outstanding Native American flutist, and she adds her vocals on four tracks as well. Of Aleut and Seminole descent, she has released three previous albums - The Offering, Heart of the World, and Beneath the Raven Moon. On "Feed the Fire," as with Youngblood's other albums, Tom Wasinger plays pivotal roles as producer, songwriter, and an accompanist who plays ten different instruments. Other musicians featured are Joanne Shenandoah (vocals), Bill Miller (vocals), James Hoskins (cello), Ian Anderson (flute), Mark McCoin (percussion), Ray Wasinger (drums), and James Marienthal (piano). That's the same Ian Anderson of Jethro Tull fame, and he is featured on the spiritually-tinged cut, "Passions to Ignite."

The enchanting repertoire always keeps flute and vocals in the forefront and evokes a sense of calmness within a sea of tranquility. Just the right amount of strings, drums, and other instruments complement the arrangements. Flute, guitar and dobro provide the instrumental interplay throughout the bouncy repetitive melody in "On My Way" that opens the album. That cut (and ones like "Dreams to Find") create a soothing aural experience. I particularly liked "Sacred Place," which seems to incorporate some Celtic sensibilities. More classical leanings are prevalent on numbers like "Far From Home" on which Mary plays flute and piano.

Youngblood was adopted by a middle class non-Indian family when she was just seven months old. As a child, she studied piano, violin, classical flute, guitar and ballet. As an adult, she decided to concentrate on wooden flute, and she now owns over 125 hand carved instruments that celebrate her heritage. Her music draws inspiration from various genres from classical to pop, and new age to traditional. "Feed the Fire" is about following the heart's desire on a journey that has many forks in the road. "Feed the Fire" is dedicated to Yougblood's birth mother who passed away in October, 2003. The title cut, written for her, tells the story of how Youngblood's birth parents met. Youngblood also honors some other women in her life - her adopted mother, eight sisters and a daughter. Some proceeds from the sale of this album will support The Sacramento Urban Indian Health Project Inc.

Although pensive at times, Mary Youngblood's music has a silky touch that is ingratiating and seductive. She's an artist of breathaking ability, and "Feed the Fire" is a mesmerizing and successful addition to her list of accomplishments. (Joe Ross, Roseburg, Oregon)

1 out of 5 stars Recycled John Kay Band.... errr Steppenwolf.......2004-08-19

If you have "Rock and Roll Rebels" Pass this album up. This is essentually that album repackaged and dressed as a all new album.

In my personal view, the other reviewer that objected to "Give me some news I can use" was dead on. There has been a propensity by Messrs Kay to recycle songs ever since he resurrected the band in the early 1980s.

I don't consider any release post the "Live in London" from 1980 Steppenwolf. It is the John Kay Band. When Jerry Edmonton (RIP)stopped being a functioning member of the band any tie to the Steppenwolf name of old went away. The heart and soul of the original Steppenwolf died.

Now, I'm not besmirching the contributions of the current line up. They are able musicians.

Its just the spirit and quality of the early era recordings there was something to say. There was an edge. The early 80s records Wolftracks and Paradox are especially bad. Fastfowarding to today, with the band its more "we need more money" and repackaged albums with only one or two new cuts.

The upshot? The post 1980 records are a curiosity, but are nothing more than John Kay occasionally releasing a new record with hired guns to keep the name alive so he can make money.

Proof just because you were the singer; make the band you don't.

    1 out of 5 stars Latest News.......2003-06-07

How many times is John going to include {Give me some news I can use} on an album? This is like the fourth or fifth time it appears on different releases...Why is he so fixated on this song???..This album is akin to {At Your Birthday Party} and is one of my least favorite albums in Steppenwolf's catalog.Instead of releasing this,John should have gravitated toward the original sound that made the name!!

3 out of 5 stars Missing the original Stepponwolf.......2002-10-25

As a traditionalist who's into the older original sounds of Stepponwolf, it was hard for me to get into this. It took repeated listenings to finally start to appreciate John Kays message. The recording is just to modern for the kind of Stepponwolf I like. John Kays vocals are good but it sounds like he recorded his parts later after all the other parts were recorded first. He's not jamming with the band, instead it sounds as if he is singing over the top of everthing else. Many artist record that way now without the listener noticing it but they did a poor job with this one. There are a few good songs I liked but most I did not care for. The instruments are recorded well. The drums in particular were recorded nicely but he plays to basic in comparison to the original drummer who is excellent. Final thought: If your a John Kay fan Buy it! If your a Stepponwolf the group fan Skip it!

    5 out of 5 stars It's Never Too Late.......2001-12-21

Originally released in 1987 as "Rock 'n' Roll Rebels", this version from 1996 differs only in title and in the substitution of two songs. Either way, it is perhaps the best Steppenwolf album since their first. It has the trademark hard-rocking sound of the group, but the songs are directed at aging baby boomers, reflecting their doubts, their fears, and their rage at the world that has changed on them. The songs are inspirational without being sickly sweet, especially "Hold On (Never Give Up, Never Give In)", while still embracing the original rock ethic of rebellion. If you still believe, as I do, that "Born to Be Wild" is one of the best songs ever recorded, then you will love this album, because John Kay can still feed the fire.

5 out of 5 stars Feed The Fire Excels.......2000-03-19

Once again John Kay has given us great music with meaningful and relevant lyrics. Every song on this CD is solid. In a world, particularly a genre (rock) where so much negativity abounds, Kay and partner Michael Wilk, write songs that address the human condition while containing positive and inspirational messages. And still, they rock with the best of them! "Feed the Fire" is outstanding!

5 out of 5 stars Ballads that are sooooo GOOD! Excellent.......1999-01-13

-I know you'll feel the power and the hear on "Feed The Fire" and "Walls of Freedom." Just two of the 12 super cuts that are currently rocking the radio airwaves all over the U.S. Now we'll help get it a worldwide spin from our DJs. Ballads that are sooooo GOOD! Excellent

        5 out of 5 stars It's a pleasant excursion..........1999-01-13

..The band moniker might make you think of C & W, or good ole' boy "roadhouse rock". You wouldn't be too far off the mark, either. It's a pleasant excursion, with West's vocals leading the way from "Willie" to Michael Murphey to local (here in Olympia) like Charlie Saibel. Sweet twangin' pedal steel, violin backgound, lull ya' to sleep, or make ya' get up an cut the RUG! Truth be told, the "fire"wasn't as bright as on some other efforts I've heard in this country arena, pace was just a lil' slow for my liking. The ballad peices are VERY tasty, though! that shouldn't detract from you checkin' it out, however, particularly if yer' a (truly) hardcore country rock fan; gets a RECOMMENDED from us..

        4 out of 5 stars .. Like beer-soaked sawdust on a roadhouse dance-floor..........1999-01-13

...Solid songwriter/player that has made the round and earned his chops out to strut his own stuff. deservedly. Sure to be a solid cult item, West and Co know what to do and enjoy being given their chance. A solid diversion

5 out of 5 stars Their sound is classic country that never goes out of syle........1999-01-13

Songwriter's Monthly From the name you might imagine a mean ol' blues band that plays some hot licks, but in reality this is a gentle-voiced country album that plunks along with a happy-go-lucky kind of grace. Even the track entitled "Dunk, Disorderly and Dangerous" has a peaceful, fun-loving quality to it. You can't fool us, Doc, your're one of the good guys, your music speaks louder than the words in your name.
