Music has long played a seminal role in the behavior and attitudes within the black community, so this compilation uniting some of gospel music biggest artists in the fight against HIV/AIDS is long overdue. Featuring a nice mix of songs covering various styles and forms within Gospel music, the 13-track collection thematically address the need for more hope, love and understanding in the fight against this pandemic. As an added bonus, the CD also includes a wallet size card of National HIV/AIDS Hotlines. Following in the wake of similarly released sets from Pop, Dance and Latin artists, Not in My Family is a fine example of music maximizing its full potential to both entertain listeners and educate them.

For the last three years, he has been assembling the literary anthology, "Not in My Family: AIDS in the African American Community" that gets to the heart of those who have suffered the denials, hatreds and misunderstandings related to HIV/AIDS victims who were family members, loved ones or professional peers. It is a powerful book with contributions ranging from stage and screen star Sheryl Lee Ralph to popular porn performer Mr. Marcus. As a companion to this book, Zomba Gospel has assembled a remarkable compilation of compassionate Conteporry Gospel recordings to comfort, inspire and fortify those still dealing with the devastation of this ruthless disease, now a feverishly increasing threat to African American women. The 13-song CD of studio and live recordings touches many moods including the thumpin' "I Found It" by Bobby Jones & New Life (w/the Nashville Super CHoir), Byron Cage's "Life Him Up," Natalie WIlson & SOP's "Free and Papa San's electrifying reggae jam "Step Pon di Enemy" to more introspective pieces such as Percy Bady's tender "Gone But Not Forgotten," Jon Gibson's "Gone with You" and Kirk Franklin's "Always"". The CD also includes one previous unreleased track: "You Can Make It" by New Directon.

I know what it is!.......2006-08-05
This album actually falls solidly under the category of "Dub". Electronic rhythms and synthesized reggae weirdness with appropriate samples floating on top. The On-U label was created by the amazing Adrian Sherwood, one of the all-time mixmasters of Dub and modern Reggae, and a direct spiritual descendent of the great Lee "Scratch" Perry, who more or less singlehandedly gave birth to the whole Dub thing. Everything ever released on this label is worth listening to, and Songs Of Praise is one of the best of the bunch. If you like this, check out Bim Sherman, Prince Far-I, New Age Steppers, and the venerable Dub Syndicate. If you want a really super introduction to this style of music, dig up a copy of Dub Syndicate's "Live at the T&C".

Usually classified under "ska", like many original and excellent groups, African Head Charge in reality defies classification.
Not really African, certainly not ska. Very strange.
"Songs of Praise" is somewhat more mainstream than their other work, with a primitive-but-not-ethnic, loosely spiritual quality.
Songs of Praise has a hauntingly atmospheric, gritty groove that sticks with you after the CD has played-out.

Each song is very uplifting!.......1998-07-08
The tracks on this CD gives a reggae twist to classic gospel songs from back in the day.
this is the most uplifting music I have heard in a while........1998-07-03
While I had heard most of these songs before, the arrangement really appealed to me. I was at a birthday party last week, and we sang and danced to this CD for hours. Keep up the excellent work.
