5 out of 5 stars One Of Humble Pie's Best.......2007-04-03

SMOKIN' is one of Humble Pie's best CDs ever. Although new guitarist Dave "Clem" Clempson lacks the finesse of his predecessor, Peter Frampton, as well as Frampton's vocal ability, he proves himself to be a great straight-ahead, no-nonsense blues-rock player, with a rawness that Frampton lacked. His urgency turns "30 Days In The Hole" from a mere good-time party tune into a cautionary warning about what happens when you take good times too far, and as a result, the song has inspired me to hang up pictures of pretty actresses as an inspiration to "put on the brakes" when I need to. This CD belongs in any serious rock collection.

5 out of 5 stars Smokin' Indeed !.......2006-11-10

The title says it all. Twist one up and let it roll. A quintessential slice of the Pie, displaying all the sassy balls and swagger of a great 70's British blues-rock band, with a touch of soul. Smokin' brings the listener back to a musical era before click tracks and digital sterility became the standard. The groove is organic. The feel is infectious. No stems or seeds that you don't need.

5 out of 5 stars Tastiest Pie.......2005-10-01

Despite having lost Frampton, this is the best studio album that Steve Marriott and his merrymen ever did. 30 Days is the quintessential rock single. The heaviness of The Fixers is counterd by So Good, which was so good that the Stones ripped it off for Till the Next Goodbye. To quote Greg Kihn, they just don't write em like this any more.

5 out of 5 stars 5 stars is not enuf. .......2005-06-22

The fact that there are not 1000's of reviews praising this cd is a shame. Its hard to imagine how this band was written off(somewhat) after Frampton left. This is maybe my favorite cd/album of all time. If you have ears, a brain and a heart, you have to be moved by this mix of soul & rock so perfectly blended. Marriot-the voice, Ridley-the bass, Shirley-heaviest drums(that crash/ride symobl), Clem-made me go out and buy a wah-pedal. Nothing better. Bands like Jet are bascically a 2000's version of this band. Buy it. Love it. Live it. I dont think their in that so called "Hall of Fame", which proves how useless it is.
BUY IT!

1 out of 5 stars BYPASS THIS HORRIBLE-SOUNDING RELIC FOR THE 2007 JAPANESE REMASTER!.......2005-03-05

This domestic "Smokin'" CD, along with the rest of the domestic Pie discs, are still the same crappy, 35+ year old, vinyl-EQ'd masters, which all sound like music emanating from an AM radio: No bottom, no definition, no soundstage, nothing.

*** HOWEVER ***

On 2/14/07, Universal Japan released the entire Humble Pie A&M catalog, plus the "Marriott" solo album, in remastered, mini-sleeve packaging.

These remasters are GLORIOUS. It's so great to finally hear all the great Smokin' tracks the way the band recorded them.

You will not believe the transformation of the sound of the Pie rhythm section in the new mastering. Jerry Shirley's drums rock the house and Greg Ridley THUNDERS, but you can hear every bass note so distinctly, it sounds like you're standing right next to his cabinet... Man, this is how it's SUPPOSED to sound!

The initial production run of the five central Pie titles (Humble Pie, Rock On, Performance, Smokin' & Eat It) have already sold out in Japan, so don't delay in getting yours!

Four of the five Japanese remasters are now the audio benchmarks for these titles: The 2006 UK Repertoire version of the third album, "Humble Pie", definitely has more clarity than the Japanese version, especially in the drums.

Perhaps now, Universal U.S. will get up off its lazy collective a** and make these fabulous remasters available.

Until that day, grab the Japanese CD's before they're gone, as all mini-sleeve CD's are limited edition.

Wes Montgomery brought the art of the electric guitar to new heights in the 1950s and 1960s before his untimely death at 43. His vaulting style employed octaves much as his main influence, Charlie Christian, did in the Benny Goodman Sextet. Montgomery's crowd-pleasing facility with the fretboard was best employed in live performance when he could stretch out and really be heard. Smokin' is a thoroughly satisfying live album recorded in 1965 and 1966 at the New York nightclub, with co-leader Wynton Kelly and his trio--Kelly on piano, Paul Chambers on bass, and Jimmy Cobb on drums. Montgomery and Kelly are in perfect sync here, especially on "No Blues" and "If You Could See Me Now." --John Swenson

5 out of 5 stars Beyond Brilliant! This is just smokin hot!!!.......2006-12-08

Talk about a foursome! This is one of my top twenty favorite albums. Anyone who plays the guitar needs to purchase this album just to hear why many consider Wes to be the greatest guitar player in jazz history. I was actually turned on to this album by a buddy of mine who played guitar for a speed metal band. He was in awe, just as I was the first time I heard it and everytime I hear it to this day! However, it's not just Montgomery that shines. The rythm section of Cobb, Kelly and Chambers just might be the best you will ever hear. They are simply flawless and this is a 'live' album to boot. Chambers is my second favorite bass player right behind Mingus and he has never been better. I always thought that Jimmy Cobb was one of the most underated drummers of his time. This is also my favorite work of Wynton Kelly. His piano playing compliments Montgomery perfectly. All four of these artists brought their 'A' game to the table during this live session (augmented by a couple of studio tracks as well) and it really shows throughout. This one is truly special and everytime I hear it I enjoy it more than the last time (I always pick up something new!). I will not pretend to be a music and/or jazz scholar, nor am I a musician. I am however, someone who has listened to thousands of albums of all types of music (rock, jazz, soul, ska, punk, reggae, rap, country, bluegrass, folk, classical, etc...) and yet nothing puts a smile on my face and serenity in my soul like this does. All I have to say is thank you to the heavens for creating such wonderful artists who created such wonderful sounds. Beautiful music like this truly does help alleviate the pain and ennui of living in today's not so beautiful world.

5 out of 5 stars Guitar god.......2006-01-26

with so many great guitar players referring to him as their favorite it was time to delve into jazz (a music I never really found myself loving - aside from bits of Django- )but after a couple of listens it's easy to overlook the grandiose over dramatic piano solos and buzzy bass noise.

This is a great album - Montgomery at first sounds choppy by comparison to Django who always struck me as just pure fluidity.
M. seems to want you to hear every note, clear and strong - his tone is very basic - a big jazzbox clearly amped - and you can hear him wide open - each formula piece of his lyrical leads is done with such casual ease you'd think it was something programmed. Players say he was "on" this night - and when you get your ear tuned to the musical style "be-bop" I guess - you can hear him fiddling with "salt-peanuts" and other brass instrument lines that come from his hands with ease.

a great album.
even for a die-hard punk enthusaist.

5 out of 5 stars The very finest guitar album ever made.......2005-12-10

I'm a guitarist and composer, and while I am not a huge fan of jazz, this is one of my top ten records of all time. I can think of no other record that captures the feeling of being onstage, peforming with great musicians. Every single second is filled with brilliance. Montgomery is beyond comparison. When I was jsut 15, I met B.B. King and he played me a cut off of this record. I quickly bought my own copy, and have worn out several over the years. A must have. Quite a gift from the band to all of us who love music.

5 out of 5 stars One of Wes's best.......2005-10-28

This live recording is Pat Metheny's favorite Wes album and who am I to argue. It features the Wynton Kelly trio with Paul Chambers and Jimmy Cobb. Wes really gets a chance to stretch out on the solos and he delivers. It contains two tunes he recorded many times, Unit 7 and Four On Six. Definitely a Wes you must have in your collection.

5 out of 5 stars One of two Wes Classics.......2005-10-24

This cd and "Full House" are Wes Montgomery's two best cd's, and they are both live. If you like the one, get the other. If you have both, buy anything Wes did on Riverside. All those cd's are great!

1 out of 5 stars Not a CD to add to your Johnny Lang Collection.......2006-07-01

I appreciate and like Johnny Lang's music. There is no doubt that he is amazing. However, this CD is awful. It does not demonstrate his true abilites and should have the "kid" still in the title. The CD is good if you want to complete your collection, but this CD is not one worth listening to twice. Save your money and wait for his next CD release.

5 out of 5 stars Jonny Lang .......2006-03-15

this kid is great. i have several of his cds and they all are great. this kid can sing. i listen to him at work, in the car and on my ipod.
this is good sounds, not hostil or booming. you can hear the words and understand what he sings. he as always has a good band backing him up.
i would buy this again should something happen to the cd that i have now.

5 out of 5 stars A solid, rocking blues cd.......2005-08-10

I recommend this cd to anyone who likes Jonny Lang and his brand of music. This was his first cd and a brilliant entrance into the world of music. The boy is a very talented writer and musician.

    5 out of 5 stars JUST GREAT.......2004-08-12

For 14 yrs old at this time I can't believe how great this cd is. You can still hear the kid in his voice, but it is just amazing how really great he is. I love it. Every single song is great.............................sbaby

5 out of 5 stars Great early release.......2003-12-07

Very bluesy - slower than his later releases. Hopefully he will come back to this style as he matures and after he's done experimenting with other sounds.

Motley WHO??? The title trash track of this boot-stompin' compilation was a number two juvey delinquent call to arms when i was in high school and has been ever since. If that's all ya know about CUB KODA and his grinnin' gang of Detroit Rock City brats, then fer cryin' out loud, whattya waitin' on??? Slap it on, tune in, and shut up!!! Ya got yer rocked up reggae tune (LET YOUR YEAH BE YEAH, as JIMMY CLIFF never envisioned it). Ya got yer killer glam-slam (GARY GLITTER's punk anthem I'M THE LEADER OF THE GANG). Ya even got THE MARTIAN BOOGIE, a spaced out JUNIOR PARKER-meets-THE PURPLE PEOPLE EATER mind-meld that's been a DR. DEMENTO SHOW fave for light years. Plus, you also get THE great lost killer rockin' roll single of the seventies, LADY PUT THE LIGHT ON ME. Acclaimed liner note king/music journalist CUB KODA does the honors here, chronicling the band's slow rise and free fall; if only he'd penned an entire book about them before he went to that "great greasy gig in the sky"! Many, many albums have made the proud claim, "MADE LOUD TO PLAY LOUD!"...only BROWNSVILLE truly meant it.

4 out of 5 stars Only missing a couple of things but still great!!!.......2005-06-07

This CD gets my vote for must-have status alone for its inclusion of the shoulda-been-bigger single "Lady (Put the Light on Me)" from what I consider their absolute best album, 1977's "Brownsville Station" on the Private Stock label (so far unavailable on CD)...if they'd included a couple more titlaes from that album and at least "Never Say Die" from their "Air Special" album, their last one released on Epic in '79 as Brownsville...this would be perfect! Overall, a great introduction to one of Detroit's coolest and most flat-out rock & roll bands in the 70s. And yes, I agree with the concensus...
their version of "Smokin' in the Boys Room" puts Motley Crue's version to shame from the very first note. There was so much more to this band than that tune, and you can bet Cub Koda is rockin' them right down to their shoes up in rock & roll heaven.

5 out of 5 stars Cub Koda Could Really Rock!!!( Rest In Peace Man).......2005-06-06

This album contains the Classic Rock song "Smokin' In The Boy's Room" which a lot of my peers did back in High School.Back then they used to smoke filter cigarettes. Sadly these days the filter cigarettes have now been replaced with a more potent addictive drug. Anyway back to the album. The guitarist and singer of this band Cub Koda was a Wild Man of Rock who was always great to watch in action as he jumped from one place to another on stage. They don't make them like him anymore. This album ROCKS so play it LOUD and forget about the neighbours!!!!

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Nice sampling of the Bullseye Blues albums..........2007-04-15

If you're new to the music of the Smokin' Joe Kubek Band, this is a great place to start...but don't end here!

Basically, this is a compilation of the band's earlier albums released on the Bullseye Blues/Rounder Records label, along with a couple of previously unreleased tracks, "Big Legs" and "I'm In An Awful Mood," which are from the Texas Cadillac sessions.

Personal favorites of mine on this disc:

"TV Light," which shows a nice personal side of Bnois King, discussing what's really important in life.

"Damn Traffic," a gritty rocker we can all relate to!

"Texas Cadillac," which, along with the later release "My Heart's in Texas" have become signature songs, played again and again at concerts.

"Got My Mind Back" Joe doesn't play this live so much, anymore, but I always request it when I see them. It starts with got a wicked bit of slide and cool drums, and is always a crowd pleaser!

"Corn Palace" This funky-slinky instrumental, along with "All The Love There Is" and "Spanish Trace" (not included on this collection) show a musical knowledge that extends well beyond the blues.

It's a great sampling of the early music. If you like this, you'll certainly want to move on and get the more recent Blind Pig releases like "Roadhouse Research" and "Show Me The Money," which are solid, well-produced, and very listenable from start to finish.

And...make sure you go see the band live. The current lineup of Joe Kubek (smokin' Texas Strats), Bnois King (smooth vocals and jazzy Gibson rhythm/lead), Paul Jenkins (beat-perfect bass), and Dave K. (drums served with a smile) is probably the best ever. They will likely talk to you between sets, and would be happy to sign your CD!

5 out of 5 stars Smokin' Joe fits the bill.......2007-01-16

I like Smokin' Joe and Benois King, because they are still true to the original Texas Blues that catapulted SRV and many greats to the top of contemporary blues artists. This compilation is right on the money with lots of "tasty" treats to enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Gotta Love Texas Style.......2007-01-06

Smokin' Joe Kubek has had many a Cd over the last 15 years, but this one truely hits the high spots. The material is consistently good and there are a few bonus cuts also. This provides a great way to be served Texas Style!

5 out of 5 stars Smokin' Joe is tops.......2006-06-14

The only problem with this CD is that it leaves out the 80 plus songs of Smokin' Joe's that are so darn good they deserve to on his "best" CD!!!! The point being, Smokin' Joe is consistently excellent and I believe I have every one of his releases. If you like sloowwww burning blues guitar served up Texas style; then Smokin' Joe is for you. If you're new to Smokin' Joe; this CD serves as an excellent introduction but move onto Texas Cadillac and some of his earlier CDs if you desire raw, passionate Texas blues. Joe ain't no Robert Cray or slick-like some of the newer "contemporary blues" artists; instead this is blue collar music from the gut. Played with passion the way blues was meant to be played. Buy this CD! And go see Smokin' Joe if he's performing in your area!!!

5 out of 5 stars Smokin' Joe Smokes!.......2006-04-23

Having seen Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King live just three days ago I can tell you that they are modern-day masters of the blues. Although Texas-based their sound extends to Chicago and New Orleans as well. Additionally, Smokin' Joe's slide guitar work is outstanding and gives the modern-day listener a sense of what Elmore James likely sounded like live.

Like so many contemporary blues artists Smokin' Joe Kubek and Bnois King have never received the critical acclaim and popularity that their outstanding music deserves. Catch them live if you can and absolutely get hold of all their CD's!

A much requested official CD reissue for an album that was difficult to locate even when it was out on vinyl in 1972, Smokin' O.P.'s finds Bob Seger covering "other people's" favorites, including a few of his own. Accompanied by a tough three piece band with Skip Van Winkle's churning organ often more prominent than guitar, Seger sizzles through a short but intense 35 minute set of nine tunes. Even when reinterpreting warhorses such as "Bo Diddley," "Turn on Your Lovelight" and "Let it Rock," the band charges through with such a crisp, no-nonsense attack. These versions sound fresh, if not quite new, upon this album's remastered reissue in 2005, 33 years after it was recorded. The feeling is that these tunes were already crowd favorites, so the recording has a live electricity to it, only enhanced by subsequent years of slicker music from Seger. The slow burn rearrangement of the once folksy "If I Were a Carpenter" captures the singer at his most vibrant, mixing sensitivity with leathery, roiling rock that explodes into a throbbing crescendo, all in about 3 ½ minutes. The mood only eases up for Leon Russell's "Hummin' Bird" and Seger's one new composition "Someday," a "Turn the Page" styled piano ballad with strings. It is "Heavy Music" in the best sense. The album remains a potent example of Bob Seger at his most raw, when he was young and hungry and sounded it. --Hal Horowitz

    5 out of 5 stars Smokin'!.......2007-04-13

This is a forgotten gem. Seger makes these covers better than the originals and even on the slow numbers he's burning. The Bo Diddly workout is just a warm up. Love the One You're With wasn't even this soulful when the Neville Bros. covered it (hard to believe, but true!) Even the Four Tops couldn't do If I Were A Carpenter with this much heart and heat, nevermind Tim Hardin, who wrote it. Leon Russel's Hummingbird is an improvement on the original as well. Then there's the cover of one of Chuck Berry's more obscure titles. Heavy Music seems to sum up what this collection is all about. I believe what makes all these covers so good is that frills (like strings) have been dispensed with. There's just voice and a bare bones backing band and they don't hold back. That, my freinds, is rock and roll.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Lucky Strike parody!.......2007-04-03

The cover conception is a parody of the Lucky Strike cigarette pack. I have to admit that it's beautiful! SMOKIN' OP's,Bob Seger claims in interviews,is supposed to be "smoking other's people's cigarettes". Here's another awesome pre-Silver Bullet Band album of Seger's with great tracks that include Stephen Stills' hit LOVE THE ONE YOU'RE WITH,Chuck Berry's composition LET IT ROCK and E. McDaniels' BO DIDDLEY. Seger worked with David Teegarden who would join the SBB at one point in the legacy. LIR,appears to be Seger's live encore, which ended his LIVE BULLET and NINE TONIGHT albums. BD was part of the LB line-up as well.

    3 out of 5 stars 3 1/2 stars.......2007-03-19

there is a great album trying to get out here, and not quite making it. there are three alsolutely outstanding cuts on this album that make it something you should have. these are: "Bo Diddley," a raw scorching rocker, with wicked guitar. "if i were a carpenter," a stunning version of the tim hardin classic. and "let it rock," another great raw slice of rock and roll. the 1st & 3rd of these songs appear on the wonderful "live bullet" album, but the versions here are more raw and powerful than the live performances, making this album a worthwhile purchase. unfortunately, the other six tracks on "smokin' o.p.'s" are, though enjoyable enough, not essential. so this recording has three seeds of greatness that fully flowered. the rest did not quite make it. hope that helps you decide if you want to purchase it or not.

4 out of 5 stars Bob Seger before you knew him . . ........2007-01-26

Years before Bob Seger really popped on the current music scene, Smokin' O.P.'s was released. Not alot of original tunes, but Seger put his own signature on several great rock era songs and made them really cook.

If you love Bob Seger, you owe it to yourself to hear what he did before his star really rose.

1 out of 5 stars For Record Collectors Only.......2007-01-05

This album reminds me of the kind that gets released when a major artist dies with very little material in the vault. I'm sure it cost very little to produce and I am also curious about the choice of songs. Segar has one of the most distinctive personas in rock - You can identify one of his songs in three seconds even if you never heard it before. He mostly writes his own material and virtually every song he has ever written is better than any of the stuff here. "Bo Diddley" rocks hard but so does "Making Thunderbirds" and the latter is actually about something real. Bob Seger has never been and will most likely never be a sellout and I feel that because he is so talented and focused on his other albums that this one really flies wide of the mark. I actually cringe to hear Bob putting the same energy into "Love the One You're With" (from the Songwriting Mediocrity Hall of Fame) as he does one of his own songs. I blame his manager and producer for this.

    5 out of 5 stars Unsung Heroes.......2003-04-10

The Smokin' Armadillos first release called, quite naturally, "Smokin' Armadillos" is one of the greatest country cd's ever released in the 90's. These guys are the unsung heroes of the "rock-a-billy" style that made todays country what it is. This band is "Grade A" proffesional and their music they write proves it. All of the songs on this self titled album were written by members of the band themselves. If you can sing, that's one thing. If you can make audience members feel like they're up on stage and entertain, that's a plus. But when you have the look, the sound, the excitement, and the writing ability to make it all cook, that's when you are truly an artist. I have to rate this album 5 of 5 stars! Pick it up today. This is a quality album.

5 out of 5 stars The Smokin' Armadillos are Awesome!.......2002-02-02

I first met them when they performed at the Grant County Fair in washington state. I was there exhibiting a steer and my mom and i were asked by the fair staff if we could go give some guys a ride from their hotel to the fairgrounds for their performance. We agreed, and soon we were ferrying the band to the fairgrounds in our pickup. They are an incredibily nice group of guys. The concert was great and I hope they perform here again.

5 out of 5 stars The Boys Next Door!.......2000-10-10

The reason why I say the boys next door is because they are so down to earth friendly. I hope someday to see them make the big time. Not only do I love their music, but they have a great stage personality. My sister and I, ( being in their Fan Club), had the opportunity to go backstage in Sulphur Springs, TX. Not only back stage, but on the tour bus. They were so pleasant and did not rush us as we wanted pictures of us with all of them. My husband and have seen them since in Paso Robles,CA. at the state fair. The money spent on this album is well spent and try to see them on stage should they come to your area.

4 out of 5 stars The scoop on Bash, Baby Beesh.......2006-11-20

This guy's been rapping sinc check this '94, look for his old group "Potna Deuce" then he formed "Latino Velvet" with Jay Tee , Kid Frost, and Don Cisco, then he started rapping in texas with SPM and his label. So when you Search him search Baby Beesh to get more results!

OK I liked the ablbum, especially "Image of Pimp" what language is oral bee rapping in is my question, , german, russian?
I also like sexy eyes, it's real good.

Um stay perkin's beat was used again for another song on his Baby Beesh menage trois album, which by the way is way harder!

If you like him look up his stuff on ebay as well.

Next look for his new stuff on arista records.

5 out of 5 stars I actually bought the cd unlike most of these haterz.......2006-02-20

It's a good cd there was only two complaints about this i actually had. One he put his other song in this disc and two Suga suga remix hurt my ear drums. But besides that i really like the cd and dont regret buying it, Even though theres a bunch of brainless complaints of people that didn't buy the cd and know nothing about bash(beesh). He was already making his money before his deal with universal. My favorite Songs are: Oh wow(feat Grimm aka the brown recluse), Stay perkin'(feat Chingo bling & Angel dust), Sexy eyes(feat Oral Russel lee), and Shawty dowop(there was some ediot that doesnt even know the titles of the songs around here he probably never seen the inside of cd how pathetic). those are my fav songs and i like the rest aswell(but not as much as i like to listen to these).

P.s. to the one that says that weed kills your brain sells you must also belive that the monster lives you closet. I would go to details but your a lost cause of humanity.

babybash is one of my favorite rappers. his style is different then a lot of other artist out there but thats what makes him an artist his unique style. i love crusin to this cd, it has nice grooves. some of my fav songs are shorty doowop, changed my life, pollution, don't disrespect my mind and the suga suga remix (luv dancehall)

5 out of 5 stars bash is dope, hes not soft either.......2005-09-14

what all these people dont know is that bash has been at it for years, he used to be baby beesh and raps with legends such as e40, mac dre, jay tee, frost and more. people think just because suga suga that he is "made for mtv" when that couldnt be more untrue. do your homework you idiots, oh yea and this album is great, especially compared to the garbage that everybody is coming out with like kanye west

5 out of 5 stars The Best Band Ever!.......2005-03-28

You had better buy these cds while you can. I just went to the Smokin' Armadillos farewell concert last Friday night. It was a sad day in my life. I have been going to their concerts for the last nine years. I've grown up with them and met many friends through their shows. Their music is awesome, but sadly there will be no more. They are going their separate ways musically. From what I have heard, the lead singer Rick Russell is going to try to do his own thing now. I wish him much success. This isn't the reason they split up, of course, don't get the wrong idea. It was a decision made by all of them. I hope Jason continues with his fiddle playing and maybe joins another band. He is so talented. If you want to check out what they are doing, their website is the same as the band name... Buy the cds! They are awesome!

5 out of 5 stars These guys are awesome.......2004-10-16

Been awhile but I saw these guys play at JD's Night Club in Helena, Montana. They rocked. Don't know why they havent done more songs than they have but Red Rock and My Girlfriend Might are two of the coolest songs ever!

5 out of 5 stars These guys are great.......2003-04-23

These Guys really know how to jam. A college buddy of mine played their CD for me on a recent hunting trip in his home state of Oregon, and as soon as I get their CD's I'm playing their music for all my friends back here in Florida.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD and they were good live.......2000-02-21

This is great cd. I went to see them in concert at The Armadillo Ballroom in Brazoria Texas, when they had just released it I was able to get their autographs. Red Rock is a great song that tells the story of Lane Frost and Red Rock. I also like My Girlfriend Might. Jason plays a great fiddle for being only 16.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD! A must have........1999-10-24

All of the songs are great. One of the best was the song titled, "Red Rock." Can't wait to get the next cd.
