Speak Beak

Editorial Reviews
By Howard Reich - Chicago Tribune
Beaky Johnston's appearance pointed to the emergence of a new generation of Asian-American jazz artists.

Jim Santella - All About Jazz
Her smoky voice swings with an easy-to-like presence. The familiar jazz standards find their way into your heart without hitch.

Album Description
Chicago’s Southport Records presents the recording debut of jazz vocalist Beaky Johnston with "Speak Beak." 10 classic jazz tracks are offered here backed by an ensemble of young Chicago jazz players. Beaky is a voice for today and tomorrow.

Beaky’s style honors Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson and Ella Fitzgerald. The lush mellow calm of her voice brings new magic to songs that have been a part of the jazz stable for decades. Track 1, "Moonlight In Vermont" offers a sweet rendition to the near perfect lyrics and some fine piano work by musical director Hunter Adams. Hoagy Carmichael’s "Skylark" flies anew with gentle, clean phrasing. Musical guests on "Speak Beak" include Hunter Adams on piano, Carl Coan on sax, Marc Piane on bass, Tyrone Blair on drums and guitar ace Michael Ross.
